Trata-se de investigar a autoridade civil como fruto de convenção e artifício, bem como a sua relação com o estabelecimento da lei e do comércio no pensamento de Hume. A influência recíproca entre o artifício político e estes dois elementos é abordada como produtora de liberdade, que diz Hume no ensaio Da origem do governo ser a \"perfeição da sociedade civil\". A ideia, assim, é expor como a autoridade, inicialmente arbitrária, concorre não apenas para a superação de problemas de cooperação e escassez, como também se mostra passível de uma ordenação geradora de regularidade, liberdade e florescimento humano. / This is an investigation of political authority as a product of convention and artifice, as well as of its relation with the establishment of law and commerce in the thought of Hume. The reciprocal influence between the political artifice and these two elements is addressed as productive of regularity and liberty, which Hume describes in the essay Of the Origin of Government as being the perfection of civil society. Thus, the idea is to show how authority, initially arbitrary, concurs not only in the overcoming of cooperation and scarcity problems, but also reveals itself as liable to an order generative of liberty and human flourishing.

This study investigates about the meaning of the USA PATRIOT Act of 2001. The purpose of this study is to illustrate the meaning of the USA PATRIOT Act from an archaeological perspective (in the Foucauldian sense). Rather than accepting the Act and its formulations this study excavates the discursive elements that give meaning to the Act within the current socio-political sphere. In this sense this is a Foucauldian archaeology of patriotism in the United States of America illustrated and explicated through the current discourse created by the USA PATRIOT Act. Moreover, this research intends to illustrate how the patriotic discourse affects our current spatial practices. By analyzing the contemporary patriotic discourse through the lens of spatial theory what is sought is to briefly sketch the conceptual landscapes that are created through this discourse. This study applies the concepts and theories of Michel Foucault, Edward Soja, and Homi Bhabha as well as other postcolonial theorists to analyze the USA PATRIOT Act as a discourse that is linked and shaped by history and a discourse that is active in the design and content of our spaces.

John Milton (1608 1674) é conhecido não só como o poeta do épico Paraíso perdido, mas também como um dos grandes teóricos e polemistas do período das Guerras Civis Inglesas. Seu principal tema é o problema da liberdade em um reino que se transformou segundo ele em uma tirania de reis e potentados religiosos, onde o súdito não era mais adequadamente representado por seu soberano; de acordo com Milton, como o rei não era mais o representante justo do reino, ele não deveria mais exercer as suas funções, sendo necessária a sua deposição e, em alguns casos extremos, o regicídio (como foi defendido pelo próprio poeta); assim, a solução proposta junto com outros panfletários anti-realistas, que nunca atingiram a riqueza retórica e a ousadia teórica de Milton é o surgimento de uma república inglesa, inspirada nos moldes ciceronianos e de clara influência secular-humanista. A partir de agora, o verdadeiro representante do governo deve ser o povo, mais precisamente a commonwealth, formada por indivíduos capazes de dominar as paixões que os podem transformá-los em escravos e viver de acordo com a vontade da razão e da prudência. This dissertation is a study of academic freedom, an issue which is regarded as a precondition for the university's successful execution of its task, namely the advancement
and dissemination of knowledge. To understand what academic freedom really implies
and entails, a historical review was undertaken of the various interpretations of academic
freedom in the Medieval Italy and France, Imperial Germany, the late 19th century and
the 20th century American and South African universities. As an ideal, academic freedom
implies the free but responsible search for knowledge and truth. The historical review
revealed, however, that academic freedom has at times been misunderstood and abused. The realisation of true academic freedom in South African universities was the motivating
force behind this study. Therefore, this study is concluded with guidelines and
recommendations grounded in the historical review that will hopefully promote academic
