Use of Clearcut Habitats by Black Bears in the Pacific Northwest

Patterns of vegetation use by black bears (Ursus americanus) on Long Island, Washington were documented using radio-telemetry in 1973-74 and 1980-81. Secondary succession altered the vegetative compostion of clearcut areas through this time, reducing the areas dominated by productive brush species by nearly 50%. Seasonal food habits, consisted primarily of grasses and forbs in spring (den emergence-May) and flowers and fruits of shrub species in summer (June-September) and fall (October-den entrance). Bears selected for clearcuts (5-21 years of age) over all other vegetation types for feeding but preferred areas dominated by large trees when inactive during both the day and night. Inactivity in clearcut areas occurred most frequently in clearcuts offering the greatest amount of horizontal cover. Although preferred in all seasons, clearcuts received the greatest use during the summer months when flowers and fruits of shrubs species were most abundant. Tidelands and meadows were used more in the spring than during other seasons and conifer stands received the greatest proportionate use in spring and fall. Old growth timber (200 +years of age) was used similarly to mature second growth. Adult males were less influenced than other classes of bears by availability of horizontal cover and proximity of cover provided by adjacent vegetation types when feeding in clearcut areas. Adult females with cubs fed in timber stands and clearcuts with abundant horizontal cover more than other bears and generally remained in close proximity to bordering timber stands when feeding in clearcuts. Subadults, as well as adult females with cubs, appeared to use available habitats in a manner that allowed them to avoid other bears. Areas in large timber stands that were long distances from clearcuts were used by bears more during the 1980-81 phase of the study, apparently because of the increased competition for declining resources in clearcut areas. Home ranges of the adult females present during both phases of the study were similar in both size and location.

Responses of Ground Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) to Variation in Woody Debris Supply in Boreal Northeastern Ontario

The maintenance of downed woody debris supplies is increasingly being recognized as an integral part of forest management. In order to better manage this resource, it is important to assess its role in supporting biodiversity. In this thesis, I investigate the responses of carabid communities to variation in woody debris availability in an experimental manipulation of woody debris volume in closed canopy forests and following a biomass harvest in a clearcut. Within closed-canopy forests, total carabid abundance and the abundances of eight species increased significantly with increasing volumes of various types of woody debris, particularly large diameter, late-decay conifer wood. Similarly, a strong affinity with woody debris was observed in the clearcut. These findings suggest that reductions in woody debris will have negative consequences for carabids and indicate the need to ensure a diverse and abundant supply of woody debris during stand development.

En jämförelse av mängden död ved i kalhygge och produktionsskog / A comparison of the amount of woody debris in clearcuts and production forests

Död ved är en viktig del i ekosystem och har många olika funktioner. Många arter är beroende av att ha tillgång till död ved, exempelvis som födokälla, bo-/växtplats eller skydd. I kalhyggen, där den naturliga produktionen av död ved inte längre finns kvar, är det därför viktigt att det lämnas kvar en viss mängd, så att området bibehåller sina biologiska förutsättningar. I undersökningen jämfördes kalhyggen med produktionsskog för att se om det fanns någon skillnad i mängd död ved. Detta gjordes genom att inventera 5 lokaler av 70–100 årig gran- och tallskog där varje lokal innehöll ett kalhygge som sammanhängde med ett område produktionsskog. Resultatet visade att det inte fanns någon skillnad i volym död ved mellan kalhyggen och produktionsskog. I inventeringen kunde man dock se att mycket av den döda veden som uppmättes i kalhyggena hade en diameter runt 10 cm medan skogsområdena hade mer varierande omkretsar. En högre volym av död ved uppmättes i granskog än i tallskog. Således kan man dra slutsatsen att slutavverkning av en produktionsskog inte verkar ha någon större påverkan på hur stor volym död ved som finns tillgängligt. De uppmätta värdena ligger dock långt under vad som finns i naturskogar, vilket indikerar att man behöver göra insatser för att öka mängden död ved i många av våra skogar. / Woody debris is an important part in many ecosystems and has several different functions. Many species depend on the existence of woody debris, where it is used for example as a food source, nesting site, growing site or as a refuge. In clearcut areas, where the natural production of woody debris no longer exists, it is therefore important that a certain amount of woody debris is left behind to make sure that the area continues to have good biological function? In this investigation, I compared clearcut areas with production forest to see if there was a difference in the volume of woody debris. Five sites with 70–100-year-old spruce- and pine forests were inventoried. Every site consisted of one clearcut area that was adjacent to an area with production forest. No difference in volume of woody debris was found between the areas. The inventory showed that many of the measured trunk diameters that were found in the clearcut areas were around 10 centimeters, whereas in the areas with production forest the diameter varied more. Larger volumes of woody debris were found in spruce forests then in pine forests. Thus,the conclusion is that clearcutting an area with production forest does not seem to have a big impact on the volume of woody debris. Nevertheless, the measured amounts of woody debris are far less then what are found in natural forests, which indicates management needs to see what improvements can be done to increase the amount of woody debris in many of our forests.

Effects of Alternative Silvicultural Treatments on Regeneration in the Southern Appalachians

Harvesting practices in the southern Appalachians have moved away from clearcutting in favor of variable retention harvesting systems. A study was initiated in 1995-8 to investigate the effects of retaining varying numbers of residual trees on regeneration in seven silvicultural treatments. A second study specifically focused on stump sprouting in only three of those treatments. The treatments for first study included: a clearcut, commercial harvest, leave-tree, shelterwood, group selection, midstory treatment, and an uncut control. The second only focused on the clearcut, leave-tree, and shelterwood. These treatments were implemented in seven stands in Virginia and West Virginia over two physiographic provinces, the Appalachian plateau and Ridge and Valley. The stands were even-aged oak dominated Appalachian hardwood stands on fair quality sites with average ages ranging from 63 to 100 yrs. Permanent plots were randomly located in each stand and all overstory trees (>5m tall) were inventoried and tagged prior to harvest. Regeneration was also quantified. Harvest occurred between 1995-8. For the current studies the plots were re-inventoried 9-11 years post-harvest and all regeneration in all treatments as well as stump sprouts in the selected treatments were quantified. The first study utilized a mixed model ANOVA to analyze five species groups: oak, maple, black cherry-yellow-poplar, miscellaneous, and midstory. Response variables included importance value, average height, and density compared within species group and among treatments. Differences between sprout and seedling origin regeneration were also investigated within species group among treatment. Results indicated that oak densities were similar in all of the treatments, and stump sprouts were larger and more frequent than seedlings. Maple exhibited an increase from pre-harvest overstory importance and exhibited competitive sprouting. The black cherry-yellow-poplar group had few but highly competitive sprouts and a considerable increase in seedling origin regeneration in all treatments. The miscellaneous species densities increased as well with more competitive sprouting in some treatments. The midstory species were excluded from the analysis as it was assumed these species would not occupy canopy positions in a mature stand. The second study investigated differences in the percent of stumps that sprouted and the number of sprouts per stump. The percent data were analyzed using a non-parametric one-way ANOVA and regression analysis, while the sprouts per stump data were compared in a mixed model ANOVA and regression. Species were combined into six groups: the red oak group, chestnut oak, red maple, white oak/hickory group, mixed mesic group, and midstory group. The plateau tended to have reduced sprouting compared to the Ridge and Valley for most species groups and treatments. The red oak group, chestnut oak, and red maple exhibited reduced sprouting with increased residual basal area. The mixed mesic group did not show any effect in sprouting related to residual basal area. Only chestnut oak showed fewer sprouts per stump as residual basal area increased. / Master of Science

Effects of Timber Harvesting on Terrestrial Salamander Abundance and Behavior

We examined the short-term (1 - 4 years postharvest) effects of 7 silvicultural treatments on terrestrial salamander populations at 4 sites in southwest Virginia and West Virginia. The 3 silvicultural treatments with the most canopy removal (4-7 m2 basal area Shelterwood, Leavetree, Clearcut) had significantly fewer salamanders than the control (p < 0.10) postharvest. No differences were found among treatments in age class distribution, the percent of females that were gravid, or average clutch size. We tested the nighttime, surface-count census method for visibility and behavior-induced bias among silviculture treatments and estimated the proportion of a salamander population that is active on the surface in harvested and control habitats. Instantaneous rates of salamander activity ranged from 1.3 to 11.7% of the population for redback (Plethodon cinereus) and slimy salamanders (P. glutinosus). Timber harvest caused up to a 2-fold increase or decrease in activity rates. There was evidence for bias in the night census method, but differences were not consistent enough to suggest general bias corrections. We also tested whether poorly fed salamanders exhibited risk-sensitive foraging in a dry environment in a laboratory experiment. Poorly fed salamanders were observed out of their simulated burrows less than well fed salamanders suggesting salamanders, particularly females and small adults, are risk-averse. / Master of Science

The impacts of seven silvicultural alternatives on vascular plant community composition, structure, and diversity in the southern Appalachians

The effects of seven silvicultural prescriptions were examined one full growing season post-treatment on five sites in the Ridge and Valley, Cumberland Plateau, and Allegheny Plateau of Virginia and West Virginia. Prescriptions were (1) control, (2) understory control with herbicide, (3) group selection, (4) high-leave shelterwood, (5) low-leave shelterwood, (6) leave tree, and (7) clearcut. The effects of each treatment on the vascular plant community were characterized by changes in species diversity, species composition, exotic species richness, Raunkiaer's life-forms, and growth-forms. Pre-treatment, baseline data, and a randomized block design ensured the precision of post-treatment comparisons. High-disturbance treatments (i.e., low-leave shelterwood, leave tree, clearcut) exhibited lower tree-stratum species richness than unharvested treatments. Prescriptions had no effect on shrub-stratum richness. Compared to the control, woody, herb-stratum richness was higher in harvested treatments. Non-woody herb-stratum richness was unaffected. No differences in herb-stratum species diversity were detected using Shannon's (exp H') or Simpson's (1/D) indices. Non-woody species richness per 2-ha treatment plot was significantly higher than the control for high-disturbance treatments. Pre- vs. post-treatment species composition was least similar for high-disturbance treatments, as measured by qualitative and quantitative community similarity indices. Exotic woody species richness was unaffected by treatment; however, non-woody exotic species were more prevalent in high-disturbance treatments. Hemicrytophytes replaced phanerophytes as the most important life-form for harvested treatments. Therophytes were more important in harvested treatments, while the proportion of cryptophtes and chamaephytes did not change in response to treatments. Tree and shrub growth-forms were less dominant in harvested treatments, while graminoids and annual/biennial forbs were more important for high-disturbance treatments. These data represent only the initial results of a long-term study designed to examine plant-community response to silviculture for one harvest rotation length. Long-term results will aid in devising management strategies that address concerns for biodiversity without devaluing traditional resource demands. / Master of Science

The effects of wildfire disturbance and streamside clearcut harvesting on instream wood and small stream geomorphology in south-central British Columbia

Few field studies have assessed the temporal and spatial dynamics of wood in small streams (bankfull widths < 5 m) flowing through forest ecosystems dominated by stand replacing wildfires. Comparisons of instream wood loads associated with clearcut harvesting, wildfire, and undisturbed, old forests are also scarce. The two main objectives of this research were: (1) to document the temporal and spatial variability of wood and its geomorphic role in relation to stand development stage; and (2) to compare wood loads and its geomorphic role in relation to streamside clearcut harvesting, wildfires and older, undisturbed forest stands. This research focused on 38 small streams with gradients less than 14% situated in the plateau regions of south-central British Columbia, Canada. A distinct temporal trend in wood loading was observed, with elevated volumes present 30-50 years subsequent to the wildfire disturbances following a “reverse J-shaped” trend in relation to time since the last major wildfire disturbance. The number of wood pieces was highly variable and few of the wood characteristics exhibited a significant trend in relation to time since the last major wildfire disturbance. Except at the smallest spatial scale (<3 m segments longitudinally along the stream) the spatial distribution of wood followed a random pattern with no trend, indicating that wood loads are related to local wood recruitment processes associated with episodic or chronic tree mortality and low wood transport. Instream wood volumes were three times higher in streams recently (30 – 50 years ago) disturbed by wildfire as compared to the older riparian forest stands, confirming that wildfire disturbance is an important mechanism to recruit wood into streams. No significant differences in wood loads were identified between the streamside clearcut streams and the wildfire-disturbed or older, undisturbed streams. The lack of reductions in wood loads are likely related to the low transport capacity of our study streams, retention of non-merchantable trees and recruitment of slash from harvesting. A lack of morphologic variability was observed in relation to the disturbances indicating that the streams included in this study are relatively robust and unresponsive to wildfire or streamside clearcut harvesting disturbances.
