The purpose of this thesis is to investigate learning and teaching conditions of mathematics in English as a second language by closely examining how mathematical and language knowledge can fit together. This study deals with the specific case of CLIL teaching and the related experimental situations are performed in European classes in a French high school. The situations have a common topic, namely that of visual and multimodal proof. The theory of Didactical Situations is the central theoretical framework but our study has proven to be compatible with task-based pedagogy. Besides, phraseodidactics provided a useful and adequate auxiliary framework by shedding some light onto the essential role played by4phraseology. We particularly kept focused on mathematical objects and processes of abstraction but also on some specific language features. The concept of representation is central in our research works and thus had to be precisely defined. The success of our experimental situations owes a lot to the use of adidacticity, a central concept in TSD, and our focusing on the crucial part played by active perception during processes of conceptualisation. The purpose of one of the experimental situations (conducted in a second language) was to ensure that pupils divised, by themselves, a visual proof of an arithmetic property previously conjectured, carried out on the very level of schematisation an explicit generalisation and used real cubes to perform another type of proof, thus making the inductive step of the induction explicit.

A abordagem CLIL na universidade e o desenvolvimento da leitura na graduação em Letras/ Alemão / The CLIL approach in the university and the development of the reading competence in German undergraduate educationSilva, Marina Grilli Lucas 20 April 2018 (has links)
This work aims to take part in the discussion on the development of the reading competence in German as a foreign language. The empirical research was carried out in a university context, more specifically in the Bachelor\'s degree in German at USP, and the analysis of the obtained data focused on participants\' reading comprehension and the factors by which it has been influenced. The primary hypothesis was that taking a CLIL course helps developing the reading comprehension of German graduate students. After a preliminary study, which included classroom observations and surveys on the reading habits of a course called \"Aquisição/Aprendizagem do Alemão como Língua Estrangeira\" [Acquisition/Learning of German as a Foreign Language], it was clear that the reason for this evolution is not the heavy load of reading during the course, but rather the load of general linguistic input offered. Based on that information, the data collection procedures were planned: a questionnaire on the profile of the students and three tests to follow the progress of reading competence of the students of the last mandatory German language course during the semester. The data collection took place in the following year, when the course was offered again. The participants were divided into two groups: students taking \"Aquisição/Aprendizagem\" and students who were not attending the course. Three of all students participated on all the data collection activities and had no systematized knowledge about German before beginning the graduation. The data analysis showed that two of them had gone through very similar paths while learning German, but only one showed improvement in their reading competence. A more detailed comparison made clear that this one had had their first contact with a dense linguistic input during \"Aquisição/Aprendizagem\" classes, while the other was already working on an undergraduate research in the same area of the course by its beginning, and, therefore, did not encounter difficulties to follow it. It was concluded that taking a CLIL course promotes the development of the reading comprehension of the student who has already built a solid base of knowledge in the German language, but does not yet have much experience as a reader.

Effect of bilingual education on students' first language written discourse : a contrastive Spanish-English study using systemic functional linguisticsMaxwell-Reid, Corinne Rhona January 2011 (has links)
This thesis investigates whether studying through English has an effect on the written texts secondary school students produce in their first language, Spanish. Research in bilingual education has tended to focus on students‟ language proficiency and academic achievement as opposed to investigating differences in discourse norms. However, an increased awareness of the role of discourse in language use and the culturally-specific nature of discourse, along with a growing concern over the dominance of the English language in Europe and elsewhere, have widened the range of questions identified as requiring investigation in bilingual education. Popular understanding suggests that English speakers make different choices from Spanish speakers in particular rhetorical situations. Although research into these contrasts can be problematic, there is support for the existence of cultural preference in the selection of options, and specific areas of similarity and difference between Spanish and English discourse have been suggested. This study then looks at one group of secondary three (3º E.S.O.) Spanish students studying through English on a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) programme in Spain, and compares two sets of argumentative texts written in Spanish by the CLIL students with equivalent texts written by non-CLIL students in the same school. Forty-eight texts are examined in total, and the comparison draws on previous research into discourse differences between Spanish and English texts from contrastive rhetoric, systemic functional linguistics (SFL), and other fields, using tools from SFL for the textual analysis. Areas of analysis include use of clause complexes, multiple Theme and thematic progression, and also genre structure and text organisation strategies for argumentative writing. The main contrasts are found to be in length of t-units, use of simplexes versus complexes, use of multiple Theme, and some issues of text structure. These differences largely correspond to contrasts found in studies comparing written Spanish and written English text, with the CLIL students‟ texts showing features more commonly associated with English writing. Additional data from analysis of the geography textbooks used by the CLIL and non-CLIL students, questionnaires administered to these students, and interviews with their teachers are also used to explore the possible CLIL effect on the students‟ written text. The study discusses how discourse conventions associated with English text in contrast with Spanish text may have influenced the Spanish writing of the CLIL students, considering possibilities including the effect of direct and indirect teaching, and the more general impact of the CLIL programme. Also explored is the question of whether this possible influence of English on Spanish language use is a matter for concern or not, with increased work on language and discourse awareness suggested as a potential response. Methodological issues raised through the study relating to aspects of text analysis and of data collection are also addressed.

Matematické hry ve francouzštině / Mathematical games in FrenchBufková, Tereza January 2010 (has links)
The Mathematical Games in French language My diploma thesis deals with one of the possible strategies in bilingual education - CLIL method, which links teaching of a technical subject and a foreign language - mathematics and French, in this case. As a tool for its implementation, I chose games because I consider them as an entertaining and a very available way of teaching. The aim of this thesis was to find out and to describe the potential of this education at different school levels. At the beginning, I focus on general integration of the technical subject and the foreign language, and then I mention the importance of didactic games and basic terminology of mathematical terms in French. The core of this thesis is my own selection of games in Czech and French language intended for three levels of school. This file was inspired by several mathematical books on didactic games. The gained data have been processed on the base of observation and analysis of individual worksheets. The results show the potential of CLIL method as a new possibility for bilingual teaching of technical subjects.

Jeden člověk za tisíc: efektivnost přístupu CLIL v jednojazyčné třídě / One Man Worth Ten Thousand: The Efficiency of the CLIL Approach in a Monolingual ClassŠvorc, Ondřej January 2011 (has links)
The thesis deals with the issue of non-native language instruction of content subjects in a Czech secondary education environment. This topic is viewed upon through the prism of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). The theoretical part discusses the learners' competences as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, Krashen's Monitor Model theory, Interactive Hypothesis, Constructivism and Participatory Learning Theory and finally Vygotsky's theoretical concepts. The question is raised whether or not such an approach is feasible to be used in ordinary educational settings; which is addressed in the analytical part, which examines a CLIL project that was run. While discussing World War One, it combined the instruction of English and History. Consequently, the evaluation part of this thesis argues that CLIL is feasible, as it promotes the learners' competences and the whole set of their intelligences.

Vliv cizího jazyka na komunikaci v bilingvní výuce matematiky / The Influence of a Foreign Language on the Communication in the Bilingual Teaching of MathematicsErnyeiová, Jana January 2007 (has links)
This work refers to the topic of bilingual mathematics education. It is focused on monitoring the communicational influences of teacher's and pupil's language, categorization of the disturbing effects and possibilities, how the teacher should prepare for them and how to solve them. A significant role plays the reflection of the teacher, as the results were done on the basis of action research during teaching in England, Germany and the Czech Republic. The teaching was realized in a second language as well for the teacher as for the pupils. The teacher was at the same time experimenter as well as author of this work. The theoretical part results from dealing with scientific literature about bilingualism, bilingual education, methodology of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), relations between first language, language of mathematics and the foreign language. In the practical part an analysis of lessons performed in mathematics with the subject of probability is carried out. The teaching was focused on playing a game with dice and deciding whether the game is fair or not. The lessons were audio taped and transcriptions of the spoken language were made. An analysis of the language, teacher's mistakes, communicational interference, proportional relations on communication of the pupils and of the...

Evaluation of the Implementation of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) Methodology in the Didactics of the English Language in Preschool Education Course Taught in the Preschool Education Teacher Undergraduate Program at the University of AlicanteCherro Samper, Myriam 06 November 2015 (has links)
Although it is known that the Spanish current Educative System promotes using the Communicate Approach to teach foreign languages in schools, other recently designed approaches are also used to help students improve their skills when communicating in a foreign language. One of these approaches is Content and Language Integrated Learning, also known as CLIL, which is used to teach content courses using the English language as the language of instruction. This approach improves the students’ skills in English as the same time as they learn content from other areas. The goal of this thesis is to present a research project carried out at the University of Alicante during the academic year 2011-2012. With this research we obtained results that provide quantitative and qualitative data which explains how the use of the CLIL methodology affects the English level of students in the “Didactics of the English Language in Preschool Education” course in Preschool Education Teacher Undergraduate Program as students acquire the contents of the course.

Výuka biologie člověka s využitím CLIL v ruském jazyce / Human Biology Teaching with Use of CLIL in RussianMutlová, Tereza January 2019 (has links)
The Diploma thesis deals with the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) educational method integrating the fields of human biology and Russian language. The goal of the thesis is to prepare lectures and study materials, its testing and verifying its efficiency in teaching process on two groups of subjects - two grammar school classes (students at the age of 18-19). The input level of knowledge was tested on both classes through the pretesting. The first group of students was afterwards taught with "soft" CLIL method (the theory explained in native language), the second group with "hard" CLIL. The questionnaire showed neutral attitude of the students towards the CLIL method with rather more positive approach from the females compared to the male students. The posttests followed, showing only a marginal difference between input and output level of knowledge on both groups. KEYWORDS CLIL, Human biology, Teaching of biology, Didactics of Biology
