Nursing and adolescent health promotion: an inquiry following the philosophical oeuvre of Michel Foucault

Ryan, Maureen Margaret 25 November 2013 (has links)
Following the philosophical oeuvre of Michel Foucault, I locate and discuss how the discursive formulation of adolescent health promotion defines the conceptual possibilities and determines the boundaries of nurses’ thinking and practices as they are written about in nursing texts. From my archaeological work, I locate and name two confident nursing practices within the context of young people and their health: “reducing risk” and “promoting well becoming” and go on to locate those practices within two broader theoretical discourses within human science: the biological view and the social constructionist view. From my genealogical work, I consider how the management of the adolescent body has become a matter that situates biological life (puberty) as a political event and situates the nurse within governing practices of pastoral power. I question the ways in which adolescent health may be shaped through political interests of economy and social order and question: When is an adolescent ever deemed responsible in matters pertaining to their health? I offer an alternative view of responsibility and argue for a shift in established binary thinking that allows for the consideration of co-responsibility.

School boards are required by law and can provide the practical school of discussion and collective decision seeking to effect more democratic practices. In the state of Amazonas, various initiatives are implemented for this to occur in schools beyond just meet a prescription, but for it to reverberate in the school routine. This work aimed to determine how the state school X can implement the practice of the advice in this regard, since in Coari schools do not have the habit of performing this procedure. The research seeks to understand the school context which measures should be taken so that it is programmed for effective action of the councils. The field research, qualitative, used as a methodology to school documents analysis and through semi-structured interviews, seeking the perceptions of stakeholders in relation to the practice of the boards. Data were analyzed in the light mainly of official documents and the study reached some conclusions, which led us to propose a targeted Educational Action Plan to enable the effective practice of the counsels in the school routine. We seek, therefore, provide a study related to the case of state scho X, but may serve as a reflection and study to think about how to carry out the practice of school boards in the county

Processo e práticas de comunicação em empresas públicas da esfera federal: análise das redes sociais digitais / Communication process and practices in public companies from the Federal sector: an analysis of digital social networks

Nascimento, Lebna Landgraf do 20 May 2014 (has links)
Contemporary society employs communication processes mediated by digital platforms at the local and global levels deeply affecting relationships among several social players. After the onset of internet, communication processes left linear models of information dissemination behind to emphasize multidirectional and interactive communication processes. In this con-text, digital social networks became powerful communication channels in Brazil. Based on this new communication behavior, this research tries to understand the digital social network communication processes and practices adopted by five public companies from the Federal sector. An empirical study was carried out including the content analysis of institutional and citizens\' messages found on the fanpages of the sampled companies and five interviews with communication coordinators and those responsible for the digital social networks in these public companies. Results from the data analysis showed that digital social networks are rele-vant relationship channels between public companies and the citizens since they facilitate access to information of collective interest with expediency and low cost; increment institu-tional actions accountability; help public companies understand the demands expressed freely by the citizens thus fostering dialogical and participative processes. Most public companies try to value dialogical processes with citizens to solve immediate problems and debate topics of collective interest. Even so, the public sector still lacks mechanisms to understand citizens\' demands made via digital networks in order to use them to improve communication processes and institutional management

Between utopia and reality: An exploration of Radical Corporate Responsibility in values-driven businesses

Algera, Puck Marloes January 2014 (has links)
Despite the growing consensus on the importance of an extended responsibility for business, both the conceptual and practical understanding of “corporate responsibility” has remained limited. Corporate responsibility is still often understood as an add-on to business-as-usual or as a strategy to enhance business performance. In fact, in recent years, the concept of corporate responsibility has become associated with corporate deceit instead of corporate contributions to society, and tends to engender cynicism rather than a sense of hope. In this study I sought to explore a more hopeful and more “radical” conceptualisation of corporate responsibility. By looking at an international sample of “exemplary” values-driven businesses, this study provides insight into corporate responsibility not primarily as a means towards commercial ends but as an expression of a desire to “do good” and create social and/or environmental value. This study paints a picture of the rich, responsible reality of values-driven businesses. It describes their generous, human-centred approach to employees and the internal environment. It explores their deep sense of interdependence with the wider community in which they find themselves, and their extensive engagement with a wide variety of external parties, many of which are not “naturally” connected to business. It creates an understanding of the iterative, emerging and evolutionary nature of the CSR implementation process and the inherent impermanence of CSR “solutions”. While this study gives a comprehensive insight into various, generous and progressive practices, it shows that the essence of a “responsible existence” is not the implementation of certain practices alone, but relates to the willingness and ability to continuously question the established ways and practices of business in light of the higher business aspirations, which, for many, leads to a fundamentally different way of organising, managing and governing the business. At the same time, this study does not provide a glorified account of some kind of “utopian” responsible existence. Instead, it shows the “messy” reality of trying to implement social and environmental values, while faced with multiple demands and when embedded within a social and business context that does not necessarily hold the same values. The thesis describes the various conflicts and compromises related to the implementation of multiple, conflicting commitments and demands, and the different ways in which the sample businesses approach such situations. While the sample businesses are quite capable of gracefully navigating these conflicts in creative and pragmatic ways, the research also indicates that significant compromises are seemingly inevitable, and can, almost imperceptibly, move a company away from its envisaged values and commitments. Finally, this study argues that the currently dominant approach to corporate responsibility in organisational studies, which reflects a rationalised and economic perspective on CSR and business, will be insufficient to describe the rich reality found within these businesses, as it will edit out some of its most essential elements. I conclude this dissertation by proposing an alternative, human existential lens through which corporate responsibility in values-driven businesses can be understood. Through a review of the research findings in relation to three existential themes, I show that a human existential perspective is better suited to explore both the beauty and the struggle of values-driven businesses.
