The contribution made by coaching to MBA leadership development at a South African business school

Christierson, Viveka A B January 2016 (has links)
A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Johannesburg, 2015 / The purpose of this study was to explore and identify the contribution that leadership coaching, facilitated by MBA alumni, could make to MBA students’ leadership development. The research study employed a mixed method sequential exploratory design with data collected from over 350 MBA students and more than 90 MBA alumni coaches. The outcomes of the study indicated that the MBA leadership coaching sessions had provided the MBA students with a new personalised learning experience that had increased their self-awareness, strengthened their self-development skills, and built a foundation for their future leadership development. The research study made a theoretical contribution to the fields of leadership development and coaching, by showing the contribution that a person-centred coaching approach, focused on individual facilitation and development, can make to MBA leadership development. The main contribution to practice was that the study established that using MBA alumni to facilitate MBA students’ leadership coaching could be a highly beneficial and financially viable alternative to using professional coaches for this purpose. A methodological contribution was made by demonstrating how a three-phased mixed method sequential exploratory design could yield a multi-faceted and fully integrated understanding of the outcomes of a study of this nature. Recommendations are made for future research, including exploring whether similar outcomes of MBA leadership coaching can be observed at other business schools in South Africa or elsewhere, as well as the desirability of conducting a follow-up study on the MBA students that participated in this study. This could establish what impact the coaching sessions have had on the MBA students’ leadership development over time. / MB2016

The influence of team coaching on team functioning

Scwebu, Mxolisi January 2017 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, University of the Witwatersrand, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Management in Business Executive Coaching Johannesburg, 2017 / This research focused on the influence that team coaching had on alleviating the challenges that emanate from team conflict. There is little work done to expand on how team coaching may assist in the transition from conflict to performance, within organisations. Organisations employ individuals who share similarities and also differ significantly in education levels, efficacies, personalities and worldviews. They appoint these diverse individuals to achieve their goals and objectives. These employees are organised to form teams that will perform different duties in alignment to organisational goals, and teams are more effective than individuals. Teams encounter challenges, and one challenge is conflict. There are three conflicts they may encounter: a) relationship, b) process, and c) task conflicts. For this qualitative research, constructive-interpretivism was appropriate because it meant that the researcher and the participant were interacting and the interaction surfaced deeper meaning. Phenomenological research design was used to explore participants’ conscious experiences which were then studied and interpreted. Data was collected from team coaches and their coachees, in different organisations, both from public and private sectors, using semi-structured interviews and observation. Key findings are that there is a skills gap in team coaching. Most team coaches interviewed are team coaches by virtue of being line managers. Others are trained coaches, but in different approaches and not in team coaching. The skills applied to resolve conflict are in line with their training as managers/leaders and some aligned to coaching skills. The other finding was that teams undergo some form of conflict and they were able to move from storming to performing, through the interventions by team coaches. The key message is that team coaching does influence team functioning towards the attainment of organisational goals. / MT2017

Treinadores de basquetebol feminino universitário: do processo de formação profissional aos métodos de ensino-aprendizagem adotados nos treinamentos / College Basketball Coaches: from the professional qualification to teaching-learning methods

Ariosi, Letícia Missura 29 March 2019 (has links)
The training of sports coaches has been the subject of recent studies due to the recognition of the importance of the coach in the training of young athletes, thus requiring a level of qualification that meets the demands of sports practice. This research aims to investigate the process of professional qualification of college basketball teams coaches, and to discuss the teaching-learning methods used in their training sessions. The sample consists in 15 coaches of female basketball, who participated in the JUESP (University Games of São Paulo), Gold Series and Diamond Series in the year of 2016, sponsored by FUPE (University Federation Paulista Sports). We opted in this project for qualitative research, to access the thought of coaches on a given topic, from a semi-structured interview instrument. For tabulation and analysis of the coaches speeches was used the Collective Subject Discourse (CSD) method. Thus, the analysis of the coaches speeches for mapping and analysis of these variables will be performed. The results point to a generalist graduation, being a coexistence with more experienced coaches the most common way among coaches to acquire knowledge. In addition, courses and scientific articles, assisted games, conversations with more experienced coaches, web searches and previous experience as an athlete are also pointed out as means of acquiring knowledge. In relation to the characteristics that the coaches think are main are: to manage the team, to train athletes, to have a good planning and to be thorough. The training sessions are planned for the teaching of content through active teaching methods (games and games situations) in the category investigated. It is concluded, therefore, that with the general graduation, coaches end up seeking knowledge through non-formal or informal solutions, since the Federations also do not offer support for the training process and that the game ends up being a pedagogical facilitator in the teaching- learning, since there is a plurality of game situations making the training of players ample

Kvinnliga officerares perspektiv på karriär : En kvalitativ studie om beslutsfattande i karriärssammanhang

Ragnarsson, Johan, Rydman, Nils January 2019 (has links)

Comfort with Complexity: an Examination of Instructional Coaching in Three Suburban School Districts in Massachusetts

Trombly, Christopher Edmund January 2012 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Robert J. Starratt / Despite its provision of sustained, targeted, job-embedded professional development to teachers, instructional coaching, which school districts across the United States have introduced in efforts to midwife instructional improvement, has occasionally suffered the same fate as countless other attempts at school reform. While programs of instructional coaching have endured and become institutionalized in many districts, they have been discontinued in others. Additionally, while the literature reports that instructional coaching in this country originated, and has remained popular, in urban school districts, it is all-but-silent about programs in suburban settings. The present, qualitative research study examined three suburban school districts in efforts to answer the following research question: How do suburban school districts' unique contexts impact the implementation, maintenance, and success of their instructional coaching programs? Case studies of three suburban school districts in Massachusetts were assembled from data collected during semi-structured interviews with twenty-two educators from across the three districts. Resulting data were analyzed across cases through the lens of complexity science, in order that the three school districts, and their programs of instructional coaching, could be explored - if not completely understood - in all their complexity. This investigation found that, while the roll-out of a district's instructional coaching program need not have been a grand event, it was nevertheless essential for faculty members to understand the rationale for the establishment of the program and the role to be played by their schools' coaches. It confirmed assertions in the existing literature that trust is an essential ingredient in any instructional coaching program. It also served to confirm that administrators contribute to the success of instructional coaching programs when they are actively engaged in supporting them. This investigation found, further, that instructional coaching programs, and the schools in which they function, demonstrate key aspects of complex systems. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2012. / Submitted to: Boston College. 'Doing coaching justice' : promoting a critical consciousness in sports coaching research

Bush, Anthony J. January 2008 (has links)
This research enquiry is a positional paper that locates the context in which sports coaching research is undertaken. Embracing a physical cultural studies sensibility, the research enquiry raises critical questions about the explanatory framework guiding sports coaching research and presents a new conceptualisation for research in the ‘field’. Deploying the theory and method of articulation (Hall, 1996) and Foucault’s (1969) genealogical method, this research enquiry maps out the critical history of the sports coaching present through consideration of the social forces that comprise our conjunctural moment (Grossberg, 2006). By doing so, the impact of the liberal capitalist order prevalent in higher education in the United Kingdom – termed the ‘proto-fascist / pernicious present’ (Giroux, 2005a; Silk and Andrews, in press) – is unpacked. Within this context, the research enquiry explicates how these various social forces congeal at, meet at, and frame the practice of sports coaching research. Through mapping sports coaching research within a corporatised higher education, the dominant or legitimate forms of sports coaching knowledge are problematised.

Executive coaching : crafting a versatile self in corporate America / Crafting a versatile self in corporate America

Ozkan, Esra January 2008 (has links)
Thesis (Ph. D. in History, Anthropology, and Science, Technology and Society (HASTS))--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Program in Science, Technology and Society, 2008. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 207-218). / In recent years, coaching has become a major form of personal and professional development service offered to executives to help develop leadership skills, enhance performance, and remediate patterns of problematic workplace behavior. This dissertation examines the emergence and development of executive coaching in the United States as a new form of professional expertise. Drawing on eighteen months of ethnographic research, the majority of which took place in New York City, this study analyzes the ways in which executive coaching brings together theories of individual psychology and of organizational efficiency in order to increase functionality and productivity at work. Executive coaching is: a) a new form of professional expertise, b) a management tool to increase productivity and efficiency at work, c) a window to changing notions of the self and personhood in America and, finally d) an access point to the corporate world. This study explores these four dimensions of executive coaching. I argue that the emergence of coaching is a product of and a response to a fast changing business environment where continuous improvement is required to adapt to the volatility of changes. Change in the larger context (corporate settings and business environments) is not to be resisted or criticized but to be enabled through the change of the self. This dissertation illustrates and explains the grounds of a shift away from systemic approaches and systemic criticism towards individualistic approaches. Coaching emerges in and becomes an illustration of a neo-liberal economy that emphasizes constant retraining of a self that is versatile, pragmatic and fragmented. / by Esra Ozkan. / Ph.D.in History, Anthropology, and Science, Technology and Society (HASTS
