The classical asset : receptions of antiquity under the dictatorship of 21 April in Greece (1967-73)Kourniakti, Jessica January 2018 (has links)
This thesis stakes out to reframe the debates surrounding a widely criticised chapter in the cultural history of modern Greece: the receptions of the classical past under the Dictatorship of 21 April (also known as 'the dictatorship of the Colonels') during the period 1967 to 1973. Informed by the hermeneutics of classical reception studies, I aim to provide a new perspective on the dictatorship, one that focuses on the contemporaneity of its discursive and visual renderings of antiquity, but which departs from a conceptual framework that is dictated by the master narrative of the Cold War (by the polarisations between Right and Left). The project converges on the ideological discourses, educational policies and the mass spectacles of the Colonels, each of which has been designated as fraught with 'ancestoritis' or 'pseudoclassicism' in the literature. In breaking away from value judgments and notions of misappropriation, it is my intention that the project functions as an exercise in a critical levelling with the dictatorship's multifold classicisms. Concomitantly, I propose that in order to better understand the politics of reception of the Aprilians, which have often seemed impenetrable, it is necessary to branch out into more cross-disciplinary methods of enquiry than those that have been employed in the past. My own approach borrows analytical tools from theories of counter-intelligence, cultural studies, political theory, educational sociology and performance studies. With this exploratory patchwork, the present study hopes to contribute toward opening up a field on which it is possible to examine the dictatorship on its own terms, while taking into account the composite articulations of antiquity with power, upward social mobility, economic development, and entertainment and leisure culture in 1960s Greece.

The study ¿The colonels politics and the diffusion of the Primary Teaching in Angatuba/SP (1870-1930) has developed in the ambit of the social and historical research and has the purpose to analyse the structure and evolution of the public chain of primary teaching in Angatuba, SP which was straightly related to the performance of families owners of the local politic power during the end of the Empire and the period of the First Republic (1870-1930)¿.
The present research work suggests to delineate Greece through the delicacy of ten French travelers who visit the country between 1947, the end of the Greek civil war, and 1967, the beginning of the military dictatorship. The corpus comprises the undermentioned authors: Jacques Lacarrière, Robert Levesque, Jean Cau, Jean Cocteau, Roger Milliex, Michel Butor, André Malraux, Michel Déon, Jacques Chardonne et Thierry Maulnier. All of them set out accompanied with a solid classical culture and a conventional concept of Greece, which requires the contrast with the « real world ». The traces of the warfare, from the Balkan wars to the civil wars, are evident, notably in the towns where the population is visibly poverty-stricken. Nevertheless, the French travelers are searching for the European conveyed stereotypes. Although they are not disappointed by the Greek landscape, they hardly recognize the Greek people. They echo the 19th century elaborate or resumed theories according to which the Greeks have nothing in common any more with the Ancient Greeks or rather they have degenerated. However, each one of them endeavors vainly at times to find continuity with Greece by comparing contemporary human types, modus vivendi and customs even the language, with corresponding ancient situations. The religious element, of which they are conscious that it constitutes a splitting component, is analyzed in terms of syncretism, or it is intelligibly associated with Byzantium and considered to be an important stage in the history of Greece. All the same, it stands out from the entire written work of art, more or less explicitly, that the real inheritors of Ancient Greece are the Europeans, to the side of whom, the Greeks can learn anew how to become the people they used to be.

In opposition to Western crime fiction (British and French detective novels, American hard-boiled crime fictions, Italian giallo), Greek crime fiction is totally unknown in the field of academic research (both in Greece and France). This thesis aims to fill this gap by focusing on a literary genre which, more often than not, has been badly seen by the Greek literary establishment. The two questions which drew our attention revolved around the Hellenic dimension of the genre (is there something as such as Greek crime fiction?) and around the evolution of Greek crime fiction over time (is there a continuity or a major shift between former and recent Greek crime fiction?).Our thesis is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on the belated emergence of the genre in Greece and on the history of Greek crime fiction from 1953 to 2013. The second part analyses the poetics of recent crime fiction production in Greece (1995-2013), in comparison to the novels or short stories of Greek writers of the fifties and sixties (authors such as Yannis Maris, Christos Chairopoulos, Athina Kakouri, Andronikos Markakis, Takis Papageorgiou). In our second part, we also try to identify the genre in which Greek crime fiction expresses itself (detective story? Hard-boiled story? Thriller? Mediterranean Noir?). Finally, we analyse the main characters who appear in the plot and the theme of the city. The third part aims at showing that contemporary authors of Greek crime fiction lead an investigation on the history of Greece (and its society) and on Hellenic identity. In a nutshell, recent Greek crime fiction is more focused on the anatomy of a country than on the anatomy of a crime.
