Yamashita, Miki 01 January 2009 (has links)
International students have long been an important part of the U.S. higher education community, but generally they have received inadequate attention in the classroom. Also, American teaching and learning strategies have not taken full advantage of international diversity. The purpose of this narrative study was to qualitatively understand the experiences of Japanese graduate students in U.S. higher education classrooms. The study highlights the challenges that Japanese graduate students faced due to cultural differences, pedagogical differences, and language problems and provides a number of suggestions for faculty, domestic students, and institutions to help create a more welcoming environment for Japanese graduate students.

Educomunicação e cidadania na América Latina. A interface comunicação/educação a partir das práticas sociais no continente: estudo de caso de políticas públicas na Argentina e no Brasil / Educommunication and citizenship in Latin America. The interface comunication/education from social practices in daily life: study of the case of public policies in Argentina and Brazil

Soares, Ana Carolina Altieri 09 April 2012 (has links)
This research aimed to identify the social-political context in which emerged the concept of educommunication in Latin America, under the hypothesis that the new field has emerged from the struggle itself of the social movement for human rights, in particular the right to communication. We reflected in this context on communication as a scientific field, as a job area and especially as a place of conflict and exercise of citizenship. In this context, we find, among others, two countries in Latin America who obtained significant achievements in their public policies related to the communication interface with education: Brazil and Argentina. Adopting the procedures of the methodology of comparative history, we seek to build a research on educational communication as a synthesis of the Latin American contribution to the development of citizens\' initiatives relating to human rights and communication. In Argentina, data were presented on the evolution of the practice of the \"Educación para la comunicación\" as a cultural heritage of the Argentine effort around the practice of communication and the critical reception of the media. These studies had as privileged object the program \"La Red Nacional de Radios. Aprender con la radio\". In the case of Brazil, the study focused on the design of public policy, implemented by the city of São Paulo, from 2001, under the title \"Educomunicação nas Ondas do Rádio - Educom.rádio.\" In both cases, the survey sought to identify the theoretical and methodological support that gave birth to these programs, ensuring their sustainability to the present day.

The present research starts from the constitution of the media narratives of gender when discussing the homoaffective family, to investigate their social presence. This is because it tries to understand, in addition to concept in the telenovela, the reception of the same by the students of the High School, or what are the uses and appropriations of students in the 1st and 3rd years of State Public Schools, with regard to the articulation of homoaffective families outlined in the telenovelas Love to Life and Family. In our research, in a first step, we seek to delineate the communicative dimensions of the "Memorial da Resistência de São Paulo". This process involves the theoretical argument that this museological institution is constituted as a means of communication / media, being part of the field of Communication. In a second step, considering that the formal school is still the privileged space for reflection on social reality, we conducted a research to understand the process of reception of the speech of the "Memorial da Resistência de São Paulo" by teachers and students of the Elementary School and High School. In this context, we seek to illuminate the process of (re) production of hegemonic and / or counter-hegemonic meanings about the civilian-military dictatorship. Based on the reflections presented by the fields of Communication, History and Education, we conceive, on the one hand, that the discourse of the "Memorial da Resistência de São Paulo" is constituted as a discourse predisposed to operate as a clash with the hegemonic conception about the dictatorship movement in the media and the school field. On the other, we understand as hegemonic meanings the set of discourses that relativize and / or silence about violence; torture; the corruption; violations of human rights; censorship; the genocide of indigenous peoples; the struggles of resistance, etc. occurred during the civilian-military dictatorship, to the point of justifying and legitimizing it and, in some everyday contexts, to claim for its return. This research is situated at the confluence of four theoretical fields: (1) Latin American Reception Studies; (2) British Cultural Studies; (3) Mediation Theory and (4) French Line Discourse Analysis. These four fields are tied by the reflections of the field of Communication / Education.

Communication strategies in management: a case study of interpersonal manager-staff communication at a South African university

Balarin, Megan Georgina January 2006 (has links)
Communication is a central feature of human life. The ability to talk is the very feature that distinguishes us from our primate ancestors. Knowing how to use language effectively gives the bearers of this knowledge power over their environment and an upper hand in their dealings with others. Thus, understanding the importance of communication in management is an essential tool for managers who wish to build and develop their organisations and their staff within these organisations. This thesis takes a case study view of manager-staff communication at a South African university. In this study managers and staff members contribute their feelings on current communication practices at this organisation through an online questionnaire and in-depth interviews. In an interpretive paradigm this thesis answers three central questions: 1) what role do managers and staff think communication plays in their working relationships, 2) what do they perceive to be effective and ineffective communication strategies and 3) What strategies can they suggest to enhance effective communication? Through in-depth qualitative research and numerical data analysis this thesis discovers central themes that pertain to the effective flow of communication in this organisation. These themes include: motivation and praise, the role of listening, building relationships, respect, acknowledging others’ languages and cultures, building teams, communicating frequently and using email and technology effectively, as well as keeping notes of meetings and discussions. Challenges to effective communication include not having enough time, suffering from stress, and the challenges of physical space and distance. By paying attention to basic human principles, such as the fact that acknowledging people for a job well done encourages them to perform well in future, this thesis relates the general concepts of communication and management theory to the specific realities and individual, personal experiences of manager-staff communication. In this way it sheds a beam of light on management communication practices and points the way towards an ideal where managers and staff members use communication as a tool of empowerment and understanding.

A carta na escola no ensino médio : processo possível na divulgação cultural? / The charter school in high school : cultural dissemination process possible?

This research, qualitative in nature, focuses on a discussion involving Education, Communication and Culture, theoretically based on Social and Cultural Studies. It aimed at understanding the cultural perspective of High School teachers through their use of media resources in the school setting. To achieve this goal, we investigated the magazine Carta na Escola [School Letter] - a supplement of the weekly news magazine Carta Capital dealing with High School issues. The study verified how journalistic contents about current events were used by teachers as supplementary educational materials in different disciplines, considering the proposals of the PCN [Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais - Brazilian National Curricular Parameters] for each discipline. It also examined how Carta na Escola has been received and understood by students. The corpus of the research consisted of five editions of the magazine, from August to December 2011, to better understand its pedagogical proposal. Then, anchored in the studies of Theories of Reception, the research used the method Focus Group, for an in-depth analysis. The group was made up of seven teachers and eight second-year High School students, which allowed us to understand, in a dialogical perspective, how the cultural debate operates in the classroom and contributes to the development of the students' worldview. All classes which used the articles of Carta na Escola were recorded on video and questionnaires were filled out by teachers and students to check the results of the use of this media in the classroom. Finally, by crossing the collected data (documents, interviews and direct observation), the final analysis of results was carried out from a Foucaultian perspective (1979), since such approach focuses less on textual details and more on a historically discursive perspective of the social actors behind texts and contexts. The research pointed to a media that seeks to adapt its teaching proposals to the skills and abilities described in the PCNEM [Brazilian National Curricular Parameters for High School]. However, it does not "listen to" the teacher-reader systematically, but rather sporadically and generically. Regarding the selection of topics, the criteria for their choice and variety are oscillating, with priority given to issues related to Human Sciences and their technologies to the detriment of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and their technologies. Teachers and students understood that the curriculum of the school associated with the use of this particular media facilitates the willingness to learn, since news in general brings teachers and students a sense of social belonging, logic and usefulness that goes beyond the formal school teaching / Mestrado / Divulgação Científica e Cultural / Mestra em Divulgação Científica e Cultural
