Terminology, proper nouns and adaption : A translation study of three sports texts

Löfgren, Kristina January 2014 (has links)
This term paper concerns the translation of three sports texts from English to Swedish. The main aim of the paper was to show which procedures that were used when translating sports terminology and proper nouns. A secondary aim was to look at challenges involved in the translation process, namely, adapting the translations to a new target audience and making sure the target text is up-to-date.                   The method used in the term paper included a couple of steps. The first one was to select primary sources. The material chosen for this study was three articles about the world’s best football or rugby players. Once the translation was accomplished, the second step was to choose examples from the target text on which the analyses could be based. At this stage, it was mostly the hard-to-translate terms and proper nouns, which were chosen. Finally, the mentioned challenges were analysed and the outcome was presented in a qualitative study. To support the analyses various secondary sources were used. The study showed that Ingo’s strategies were applicable while translating proper nouns. Also Ingo’s other guidelines regarding additions and omissions turned out to be useful. On the other hand, Vinay & Darbelnet’s models were helpful when handling sports terminology.

The translation of cultural references and hyphenated premodifers in a travel guide about the Caribbean

Hiltunen, Nina January 2018 (has links)
This paper studies how cultural references and hyphenated premodifiers in an English travel guide about the Caribbean are translated into Swedish. The aim is to investigate what strategies that are used when translating cultural references, and why; as well as to see which grammatical structures that appear when translating hyphenated premodifiers from English to Swedish. The qualitative analysis focuses on how cultural references and hyphenated premodifiers are translated, the strategies/categories used, and the corresponding result. The quantitative analysis aims at summarizing what strategies or grammatical categories that are most commonly used in overcoming these translation issues. The results show that most hyphenated premodifiers are translated with another grammatical structure, namely through premodifying adjectives, without the use of hyphens. Regarding cultural references, equivalence, transference, and generalization were common strategies to convey the same content and sense to the new target readers, whereas the domesticating method together with communicative translation proved to be the most helpful methods.

Hôtel Pacifique - "det stilla hotellet" : Översättning av en modern franskkanadensisk pjäs med åtföljande analys och översättningskommentar / Hôtel Pacifique – “the peaceful hotel" : An annoted translation of a contemporary Québécois play

Johansson, Karin January 2020 (has links)
This essay is based on my own translation from French to Swedish of parts of the play Hôtel Pacifiqueby the Québécois author Fanny Britt. The purpose of the essay, apart from creating a text performable in its target language context, is to discuss and analyze the specialized nature of translating drama. The essay also aims to provide new perspectives on Québécois French and problems related to translating language varieties. The spoken word is the focal point: i.e. the lines of the drama and the characteristic oral features of Québécois French. Newmark's communicative translation method is used as the main translation principle. The method proves to be compatible with the text type despite certain exceptions. The result was a modern Swedish play with colloquial and idiomatic language. However, in order to determine if the text is performable, the drama must be presented on stage, which is a future goal.

Peter Newmark a jeho přínos translatologii / Peter Newmark and his Contribution to Translation Studies

Klabal, Ondřej January 2014 (has links)
The present theoretical and biographical thesis deals with the work of Peter Newmark, a prominent Translation Studies scholar. The thesis is based on an analysis of Newmark's monographs and papers and identifies key ideas which constitute his contribution to the development of Translation Studies. Given the context of his time, with the Western world being dominated by neopositivism, Newmark's approach was not in line with the mainstream. The thesis also tries to take into account the chronological development of Newmark's ideas and highlight some ideas from more recent papers, the reception of which was rather limited. Furthermore, the thesis presents the reception of Newmark's ideas and the most important critical responses to them.
