The work proposes the description, analysis and interpretation of the place of the soccer in the every-day life of the Vila Campos do Cristal, in Porto Alegre, a village that was formed around four soccer fields and was - after almost 30 years - replaced in allotments. Even though the new space had better living conditions, the population showed discontent with the absence of something that seemed basic for their lives: soccer and its surroundings. lt led to the question: what is the place of soccer in the way of life of that population? Having the discussions on culture, space, leisure and soccer as reference, the answer this question was sought After the field work (semi-structured interviews and observations) one can consider that the soccer, already present in the process of constitution of Vila Campos do Cristal, was part of the every-day life of that community and, as leisure practice linked to the universe of party, was a central element in the characterization of that space, giving it meanings and strengthening the web of sociability and belonging.

#vistårinteut initiative and solutions to the collective action problemAndén, Julia January 2018 (has links)
The aim of the study is to investigate how Facebook is used to facilitate and inspire collective action. This will be done through a case study of the Swedish network of volunteers and professionals #vistårinteut [We Will Not Stand It] (VSIU). Further the aim is to examine what it is that makes people convert their concerns on social change into collective action by mobilisation in the network. Because they are part of the same network, the participants are assumed to have aspects as identity, motive, and purpose in common and the perception of collective identity and interest will be part of the study. The method for data collection is internet-based using two steps; 1) web-based survey and; 2) focus groups investigated through Facebook. Furthermore a Coding Scheme will be used to analyse the results through the theoretic framework of Collective Action theory, and the four solution categories to the Collective Action problem; market category, community category, hierarchy category and contract category. Eleven solution groups are selected due to the potential of social media to influence the capacity of each solution. The most noticeable solution category in the results from VSIU is Community with strong indications of both common knowledge and common values, contributing to a steady community building and collective action online and in the streets. Facebook contributes to the common identity and community building by providing availability to information and support within the group. Another significant characteristics of Facebook as platform for collective action is the breakdown of geographical, political and social barriers. However Community solely is discovered to be insufficient to solve the collective action problem and demands for solutions from at least one other category.

Adult Learning in the Urban Context: Community Engagement from the Voices of Four Adult Black MalesDuff, Myron Carl, Jr. 09 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The Loving Neighborhood was a very active ecosystem consisting of four communities (Capella, Carson, Midtown, and Summerville) that came together to form one larger community. Although the four neighborhoods’ ethnic makeup was about 30% Black, 30% Latino, and 30% White, the Carson community was predominantly Black. The Carson neighborhood had a very vibrant neighborhood association in which there were four adult Black males who actively participated in Carson’s economic and community development efforts. These men consistently attended neighborhood meetings, volunteered on community action committees, held community leadership positions, and participated regularly in local events. In order to understand the work of adult Black males who were seeking to improve the quality of life in a specific community context, this research sheds light on the “voices” of these four adult Black males as they attempted to foster neighborhood transformation by becoming more active in an Black urban community. It is imperative that the shared meanings of Black men be understood within the ecosystems in which they existed, emphasizing the importance of their conversations that addressed the needs of their communities. While previous research studies have explored adult learning and community engagement separately, these studies have failed to address how Black males could have helped Black communities in grassroots development efforts. Studies that have addressed
these intersections could have provided valuable insight into why Black men became active in their communities, what they might have learned because of their community activism, how they remained motivated, and what skills they would have needed in order to effectively engage underserved neighborhoods. In response to this deficiency, this inquiry employed a critical approach to explore the importance of the unique voices of these four Black men as they participated in the transformation of their neighborhoods.

Reimagining hormone tracking : A feminist exploration of designing an empowering communityOonk, Cateau January 2023 (has links)
This study explores the possibility of designing an empowering community on a hormone-tracking application. I hereby draw inspiration from the ethos of the radical consciousness-raising groups of the 1970s to move away from the traditional individualistic approach to hormonal health. The study adopts a research-through-design approach that integrates a combination of sensitizing user engagement, somaesthetics and speculative design. By conducting interviews centred on individuals’ lived experiences surrounding hormonal health and a design workshop that emphasises collaboration and inclusion in the design process, I discuss the potential for creating a digital community that promotes a holistic and collectivist perspective for hormone-tracking applications. The aim is not to make users reliant on the community to give them knowledge. Rather, the community should enable users to collectively create a consciousness around their hormonal health and use this to empower them to better understand their hormones. The findings highlight that the design should be guided by the principles of connecting only a few people that share similar experiences and have different levels of knowledge to establish genuine human connections and collectively construct hormonal consciousness. Lastly, our study concludes that akin to the women’s health movement, the act of bringing together a group of people to discuss their health and bodies is in itself an empowering and inspiring act that fosters a sense of community.

The Untold Story of Baba Island : Sustainable Livelihood: The Revival of Fishing Community andEcology of Baba Island, KarachiAhmad, Mahum January 2022 (has links)
Once covered by dense mangrove forest, Baba Island was inclusive of a group of Islands protecting the Kolachi settlement from storms and invasion. Kolachi Jo Goth (fisherman’s village) transformed into the present-day megacity of Karachi when the British conquered and established it as a harbour for trade. Baba Island was no exception to the change as the British started moving the fishermen from the centre further out to the Islands while establishing their residential colonies. This displacement of a chunk of the community led to the invasion of mangrove land and hence came about a dependent community - known as Baba Goth (Island). The infrastructure and main fishery including the fish markets were all still inland, apart from this as the city grew development happened inland and the community became forgotten over time. The once pristine waters are polluted, mangroves forests diminishing, fish depletion in the sea, lack of infrastructure and skills, rising sea levels and economic impoverishment have all led to the Baba community's vulnerability. This thesis recognizes the degrading conditions of the Baba community, especially in the current context of climate change. Through the lens of sustainability, the project understands the practices and economic activities of the residents to derive solutions. It promotes regenerating coastal ecology to prevent land loss from seawater intrusion and storms. Ecofishing, waste and water management are the other main strategic solutions explored in the project. In all, the thesis aims to provide strategies for self-sufficiency and minimize their dependency on the city.

Through the lens of a timebank: Gotlandic perceptions about community buildingDavis, Vivian, Otto, Anne-Katrin January 2022 (has links)
Using the alternative currency concept of a timebank, this qualitative study aims to evaluate attitudes towards community life on Gotland using three distinct island communities: the Uppsala University Campus Gotland, the city of Visby and the countryside of Gotland. Focus groups and expert interviews have been used to create a holistic understanding of community life on the island, with relation to concepts of timebanks. A thematic analysis with comparative characteristics in combination with theory of social capital and collective action has been used to analyze the collected data. Following the theory, the three communities have been identified as “Transitory Kinship” (Campus), “Family Unit” (City), and “Collective Dream” (Countryside), each characterizing their inherent uniqueness. This research shows that identity, belonging, trust, value, and reciprocity as themes for a thriving community are present within all Gotlandic communities. Another outcome of this study is the alignment of the values of timebanking with Gotlandic community perceptions, within the social capital framework. The findings indicate differences between the three communities such as mentalities around value and trust. We find the communities of Visby and the university as the biggest beneficiaries for the possible foundation of a timebank.
