Les Organisations de Développement de Standard (ODS) sont généralement perçues comme des acteurs-tiers neutres facilitant l'élaboration de norme de jure. Pourtant, la compétition entre concurrents et les manœuvres stratégiques y ont aussi leur place. Notre recherche pose la question de l'utilisation par un leader de la coopétition dans le hors-marché comme stratégie de contrôle de son marché. L'étude examine particulièrement les comportements de Microsoft pendant le processus de normalisation d'OOXML entre le mois de mai 2007 et le mois d'août 2008. La méthode utilisée est principalement qualitative et s'appuie sur l'étude exploratoire d'un cas unique. Nous analysons les interactions entre marché et hors-marché à travers l'étude des modes relationnels (compétition, coopétition et coopération) que le leader mobilise au sein de l'ODS français (Afnor). Nos résultats montrent en particulier que le recours à la coopétition dans un contexte normatif constitue une stratégie gagnante pour le leader. La nature de cette coopétition est transitoire sur le hors-marché et permet un retour à un comportement de recherche de rente monopolistique sur le marché. / Standard Development Organizations (SDO) are generally perceived as neutral third party actors facilitating the development of de jure standards. However, competitions between competitors and strategic manoeuvring also have their place. Our research questions the use by a leader of coopetition in the non-market as a strategy to control its market.This study particularly examines the behaviour of Microsoft during the standardization process of OOXML between May 2007 and August 2008. The method used is primarily qualitative and is based on the exploratory study of a unique case. We analyze the interactions between the markets and the non-markets by studies of relational methods (competition, coopetition and cooperation) that the leader engages with the French SDO (Afnor). Our results show in particular that the use of coopetition in a normative context is a winning strategy for the leader. The nature of this coopétition is transient on the non-market and allows a return to the behaviour of seeking monopolistic rent on the market.

Thailand's computer industry : comparative advantage and contribution to economic growth

The examination of the performance of Thailand's computer industry, and its contribution to the country's economic growth, are the two major objectives of my research. I study whether the computer industry in Thailand has acquired a comparative advantage. Then, I examine how investment in information technology (IT) has contributed to the growth of total factor productivity for the economy as a whole. The methodology I adopt for measuring the performance the computer industry is based on a number of indices including unit labor cost, revealed comparative advantage, net export index and labor productivity. Estimating the contribution of information technology to the growth of total factor productivity requires two estimation steps. First, I estimate the production function for Thailand where aggregate output depends on human capital, physical capital and labor. Total factor productivity then emerges as the residual of this production function regression. In the second stage, I estimate the effect of investment in IT on total factor productivity, after contributing for its other important determinants. The results suggest that the computer industry in Thailand has indeed acquired a comparative advantage recently. Moreover, an increase investment in information technology significantly influences the growth of total factor productivity in the economy. / Graduation date: 2000

An Empirical Analysis of Patents Litigation and Innovation

This study provides an empirical analysis of patent litigation and innovation within high-tech firms. There is a significant drop in R&D over the course of the eleven year period of interest. However, the results do not show litigation causing a significant effect on R&D investments as either a percentage of revenue or a percentage change from year to year. Secondly, there was found to be a slight drop in percentage change of patents earned per year over time, but this was not found to be significantly caused by litigation. However there is strong evidence to support that increased litigation does cause the percentage of patents classified as utility patents to fall. Since this ratio of utility patents per total patents can be viewed as an indicator of innovative quality, this trend suggests that litigation does cause overall innovative quality of a firm’s efforts to diminish.

Convergent Hollywood, DVD, and the transformation of the home entertainment industries

In 1997, DVD was introduced to the American public, beginning the fastest diffusion of any consumer electronics product in history. In this dissertation, I show how DVD, via favorable conditions in industry, technology, culture, economics, and the regulatory environment, replaced existing home video and computing technologies while transforming home entertainment. I analyze how DVD was successfully developed and commercialized by member firms in the filmed entertainment, consumer electronics, and computing industries from 1994-2002. I demonstrate how a new industry developed around DVD through unprecedented cooperation between these three industries. This study uses trade publications, mainstream press reports, industry data, advertisements, depositions to congress, and published interviews with industry members to analyze a process that has been understudied by scholars. Through the use of these resources, I explore how demand for the technology developed within existing contexts and how myriad forces aligned to enable the emergence of a new disc technology. Furthermore, I demonstrate how DVD reshaped these contexts while transforming the nature and business of filmed content distribution. DVD initiated a new era for digital content distribution. This era was marked by the convergence of three industries, new levels of access to filmed entertainment, mobilized viewing opportunities, the conflation of the computer and the television set, and heightened efforts to protect content through a variety of legal, regulatory, and technological strategies.

The high-tech industry is an extremely fast-paced and highly competitive one with constant changes and with companies entering and exiting the playing field in a matter of months. Within this ruthless environment Dell Inc. emerged as a singular player in January 1984 and rose to be the world’s largest personal computer maker in just seventeen years in 2001. One has to ask what made Dell so special and how did Michael Dell make his fortune from his dormitory room at the University of Texas at Austin. Furthermore, what explains Dell’s decline from its number one position in the world in 2001 to barely number three now as it stands behind Acer and clearly behind the current industry leader Hewlett-Packard? This paper is an attempt to take the reader through the history of the rise and fall of Dell. More importantly, it seeks to identify the weaknesses as well as strengths, and advantages as well disadvantages of the business model of this company. Finally, the paper will outline the necessary steps that Dell must take to reclaim the crown of the largest and most successful computer manufacturer in the world. / text
