Essays on innovation ecosystems in the enterprise software industry

Huang, Peng 05 August 2010 (has links)
Innovation ecosystem strategy is often adopted by platform technology owners to seek complementary innovation from resources located outside the firm to exploit indirect network effect. In this dissertation I aim to address the issues that are related to the formation and business value of platform innovation ecosystems in the enterprise software industry. The first study explores the role of three factors - increased payoff from access to platform owner's installed base, risk of misappropriation due to knowledge transfer, and the extent of competition - in shaping the decisions of third-party complementors to join a platform ecosystem. The second study evaluates the effect of participation in a platform ecosystem on small independent software vendors' business performances, and how their appropriability strategies, such as ownership of intellectual property rights or downstream complementary capabilities, affect the returns from such partnerships. Built upon resource based view and theory of dynamic capabilities, the third study reveals that users' co-innovation in enterprise information systems, measured by their participation in online professional community networks, constitute a source of intangible organizational asset that helps to enhance firm level IT productivity.

The industrialisation of software production - a knowledge management perspective

Van Niekerk, Melchior Jacques 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Informations Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / This research utilises theories of organisational knowledge creation from the field of knowledge management to analyse the manner in which the industrialisation of the software development industry is likely to occur. The aim of the research is to prove the following hypothesis: If the software development industry moves towards industrialisation, then knowledge assets in the format of universal production templates will come into being. The research commences by providing background information on the state of practise of software engineering by giving an overview of the changes in the industry over the past four decades. The software development industry is consequently presented from the viewpoint of the proponents of a craftsmanship based approach to software development, and from the viewpoint of those proposing that industrialisation will offer a solution to the problems besetting the industry. In this discussion the terms industrialisation as well as economies of scale and scope are defined. Potential paths and drivers that will allow the industrialisation of the industry are presented – software factories as a path towards industrialisation, and cloud computing as a driver for industrialisation. In order to supply a knowledge management perspective, the theories of Ikujiro Nonaka and Max Boisot are presented. These theories assume different perspectives on the creation of organisational knowledge, but an attempt is made to reconcile the differences between the two theories. Particular attention is paid to the economic meaning and implications of knowledge, information and data as factors of production. The concept of knowledge assets are examined in detail, and placed into the context of software development. In the last chapter the research and conclusions of the previous chapters are consolidated, to prove the central hypothesis of this work.

Obstáculos à inovação na indústria brasileira de software e serviços de TI / Obstacles to innovation in brazilian software and IT services industry

Bertoni, Rebeca Bulhões, 1987- 07 March 2014 (has links)
Orientador: Plínio Soares de Arruda Sampaio Júnior / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Economia / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-25T23:35:40Z (GMT). This dissertation aims to show, from Brazilian Software and IT Services Industry (BISS) analysis, the obstacles that restrain the development of this industry. It is intended to provide evidences pointing to the inability of Brazilian companies to internalize the innovation process. Thus, this work finds, through empirical analysis, the existence of structural barriers to introducing and diffusing technical progress. The Brazil recent policy towards IT sector evinces ignorance about the specificities of this industry in Brazil. It is inferred that the belief in the principle of convergence of development trajectories of countries through the catching-up process remains present in science, technology & innovation policy. Although public policies have encouraged the adoption of 'tertiary exporter' model, as Indian, industry evolution walked toward a process of increasing commoditization in domestic market. In this process, flexible and precarious work has become key strategy for cost reduction in order to achieve gains in competitiveness through price reduction. Because the main input in software development is human labor, the search for cost reduction was perceived in labor market by changes in workforce composition, which explain the average wages compression before a scenario of "labor scarcity / Mestrado / Economia Social e do Trabalho / Mestra em Desenvolvimento Econômico

Ieis, Fabiana 16 May 2013 (has links)
This dissertation investigates what the selected actors’ perception on the formation and management of science, technology and innovation policies and industrial policies for the software industry from the 2000s. This is to identify the respondents' perception in relation to the guidelines of Science, Technology and Innovation Policies and Industrial Policies. While investigating the selected sector it is observed that there are a number of laws and policy instruments that support and benefit it, mainly, in the dimension of financing and incentive to the export, moreover, is an intensive sector in labor of higher level of knowledge, has modern environmental characteristics and requires relatively low initial investments. The software activities have been found scattered in the various economic sectors and have the potential to improve the productivity and competitiveness of these sectors in that they modernize and facilitate the organizational and productive processes by means of its products and services. To seek to understand the actors’ perception on the policy guidelines this study adopted as method the bibliographical research of qualitative character and interviews that were performed through semi-structured questionnaires in order to investigate the respondents’ perception on the process of formulation and conduct of the policies for the software industry in Brazil, from the 2000s. For this, nine interviews were conducted, with a convenience sample representation by the institution for the sector and the political dynamics in the sector In order to classify the actors’ perception it was performed a qualitative categorization of actors ' perception on the policies, in order to analyze whether the plans have shown to be positive or negative for the development of the chain and if have shown advances in its conduction over time, for this it was elaborated, from the interpretation of reports of the interviews, a plan of analysis composed of the axes: evolution of the policy plans and evolution of the chain software dynamics. As a result, this research shows that the interviewed actors generally participate in formulation of policies, has good knowledge of the plans, and that all respondents consider that there have been advances in the dynamics of the sector, but attributed this progress more to the national economic development than the performance of policies in the sector.

A total quality management (TQM) strategic measurement perspective with specific reference to the software industry

Pohl, Martha Jacoba. 11 1900 (has links)
The dissertation aims to obtain an integrated and comprehensive perspective on measurement issues that play a strategic role in organisations that aim at continuous quality improvement through TQM. The multidimensional definition of quality is proposed to view quality holistically. The definition is dynamic, thus dimensions are subject to evolution. Measurement of the quality dimensions is investigated. The relationship between quality and cost, productivity and profitability respectively is examined. The product quality dimensions are redefined for processes. Measurement is a strategic component ofTQM. Integration of financial measures with supplier-; customer-; performance- and internal process measurement is essential for synergism. Measurement of quality management is an additional strategic quality dimension. Applicable research was integrated. Quantitative structures used successfully in industry to achieve quality improvement is important, thus the quality management maturity grid, cleanroom software engineering, software factories, quality function deployment, benchmarking and the ISO 9000 standards are briefly described. Software Metrics Programs are considered to be an application of a holistic measurement approach to quality. Two practical approaches are identified. A framework for initiating implementation is proposed. Two strategic software measurement issues are reliability and cost estimation. Software reliability measurement and modelling are introduced. A strategic approach to software cost estimation is suggested. The critical role of data collection is emphasized. Different approaches to implement software cost estimation in organisations are proposed. A total installed cost template as the ultimate goal is envisaged. An overview of selected software cost estimation models is provided. Potential research areas are identified. The linearity/nonlinearity nature of the software production function is analysed. The synergy between software cost estimation models and project management techniques is investigated. The quantification aspects of uncertainty in activity durations, pertaining to project scheduling, are discussed. Statistical distributions for activity durations are reviewed and compared. A structural view of criteria determining activity duration distribution selection is provided. Estimation issues are reviewed. The integration of knowledge from dispersed fields leads to new dimensions of interaction. Research and practical experience regarding software metrics and software metrics programs can be successfully applied to address the measurement of strategic indicators in other industries. / Business Management / D.
