The formation and functioning of racially-mixed congregations

Venter, Dawid 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (DPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 1994. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This is an empirical, qualitative study of racially-mixed urban churches (congregations) as social institutions, which includes a practical-theological perspective. Research was motivated by the rareness of mixed congregations, compared to the profusion of homogenous congregations. My purpose was to uncover social factors which support the formation, maintenance, and functioning of mixed congregations. A New Testament section is included because of the normative value that these texts hold for contemporary Christians and church structures. My theoretical base is informed by history, theology, biblical studies, sociology, and anthropology. The development of relevant aspects in these fields are sketched. Special attention is given to assimilation, pluralism, and multi-culturalism as forms of inter-ethnic interaction based on structure and culture. My methodological base incorporates congregational studies and social-scientific literary analysis. The historical development of both is sketched by means of an overview of relevant literature. The general qualitative analytical social and literary techniques that I apply are indicated, including participant-observation, semi-structured interviews, structured questionnaires, and document-analysis. A social history of South African congregations shows that the ideal of mixed congregations existed since the start, but was gradually repressed by several factors. Some studies of mixed congregations are discussed, and various mixed US and South African congregations are outlined. Three contemporary Johannesburg congregations are introduced, including Johweto, an independent charismatic church in the black city of Soweto; St. Francis Xavier, a Roman Catholic church on the borders of coloured and white suburbs in western Johannesburg; and Central Methodist Mission, an inner-city Protestant church. The Johannesburg congregations are idiographically and empirically analysed in terms of their context, identity, process, and programme. Social factors contributing to their ethnic mix are indicated. The insights from the contemporary research are applied to early Christian congregations in a social scientific reconstruction of the social world of appropriate New Testament texts. The purpose is to discover the role of ethnicity in their composition and functioning, and to show whether ethnically-mixed congregations were normative. I suggest a theory concerning the effects of ethno-cultural factors on the structures and functioning of Pauline congregations between AD 30 and 70. I conclude with a summary of the theoretical and practical implications of the study's results, and an evaluation of goals and methods. Practical strategies are suggested for dealing with commonly indicated difficulties in the formation of mixed congregations. A theory of the influence of social factors on formation is supplied, and a dynamic model of formation constructed. I posit three types of mixed churches according to the processes by which they are formed: contextual, inclusive, or intentional. These are evaluated as formation strategies, and a two-tiered typology in terms of internal structure is also proposed. The types are illustrated with reference to congregations from the US and South Africa. Segregated and integrated congregations are evaluated in theological, social and political terms and I indicate why mixed congregations are preferable. An overall theory of the formation and functioning of mixed congregations is put forward. Assimilation is seen as a contributive cause, but modified where counter-status quo and multi-cultural strategies are employed.

Strinnholm, Sofia January 2016 (has links)
This study is about twinning partnerships between congregations in the Church of Sweden (CoS) and the Evangelical-Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT). The study is about three congregations within the diocese of Härnösand that has twinning congregations within the diocese of Iringa. The aim of the study is to define values within the twinning congregations that are important to the CoS. The study is based on interviews with lay people, elected and employed people within CoS. Swedish informants have told me that they see the prayer being part of daily life in a more natural manner for the friends in Tanzania. “The prayer is real within the congregations in Tanzania”, the people of the CoS are saying. What is the value for the CoS of having twinning congregations with ELCT? What do the Swedish people gain of it and how is it affected of the economical differences between the twinning congregations?

An exploratory study on the vocation discernment of women in a Latin American religious order / Vocation discernment / Title on signature form: Exploration study on the vocation discernment of women in a Latin American religious order

Bruss, Melanie E. 04 May 2013 (has links)
This ethnographic case study explored the vocation discernment process for Latina women who have entered a religious order. The researcher spent three months participating in and observing the daily lives of religious sisters and conducted interviews. The eight religious sisters interviewed for the study were predominately of Mexican and Central America descent. Similar to Lester’s (2005) findings, sisters describe persistent feelings of inquietud before entering the religious life, and sought fulfillment through religious means. Participants often feel joy and admiration when they met a religious sister for the first time. Participants recount a religious or sensory experience which provided clarity to her decision. The participants indicate a sense of urgency to enter the religious life as soon as possible. The results are compared with other studies on religious life and vocation discernment through a sociological and psychosocial perspective. / Department of Counseling Psychology and Guidance Services

Fechner, Fabián 12 April 2018 (has links)
In spite of the well-known importance of written norms and administrative structures in the Society of Jesus, there are only a few specialized studies of these subjects. A very general concept of a monolithic and centralized religious order is prevalent. But when administrative practices and internal communication are analyzed thoroughly, it becomes clear that Jesuit structures were based on consultative guilds which took part in decision-making processes. Among the least investigated administrative topics, the freedom of action of provincial congregations is most surprising.

Réforme catholique et sociétés urbaines en France : les congrégations mariales jésuites aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles / Catholic Reformation and urban societies in France : the Jesuit Marian congregations in the 17th and 18th centuries

Yamamoto, Taeko 22 June 2017 (has links)
The Marian congregations appeared in 1563, as association of Jesuit College students, and developed rapidly in the context of the Catholic Reformation, extending to all faithful, supervised according to their age and social backgrounds. Encouraged by the papacy, civil and religious authorities, as a "rampart against the heretics", these congregations remained interconnected because of their aggregation to the initial congregation of the Roman College (Prima Primaria). Its members followed the same Common Rules, and they benefited from its indulgences. By submitting to various exercises, and by committing themselves to an exemplary spiritual life, they created emulation in their family connections and professional relationships. In France, Marian congregations were firstly established in places for education and on the borders between Catholics and Protestants, their main purpose being to train the future Christian elites and to gain the urban elites. Founded around 1630 in the Jesuit professed house of Paris, the Congregation of Gentlemen (Messieurs), gathered the “dévots” of the ruling classes of the capital. Among these are several great figures which are jointly inscribed in other devout circles, such as the Company of the Holy Sacrament. Often, as a result of their studies in Jesuit colleges, having risen socially, these dévots pursued their congregation activity, relying on their kinship and their relations, to strive to act in the city towards a Christian perfection. This sociability pursued from generation to generation was all the more valuable among the artisans. The network thus created, which bring both spiritual and material assistance, was also a welcome structure in their mobility.Would there be a general decline of the Marian congregations in the Age of Enlightenment? Indeed, the number of newly created foundations decreased, at first. Then, these associations were affected by the conflict which had developed between Jesuits and Jansenists, around the bull Unigenitus. In Paris, for example, the number of sovereign courts magistrates, specifically, declined. This decrease was compensated by an increase in number of anti-Jansenist and philo-Jesuit clergy. However, this apparent decline is far from unanimous, depending on social categories and regions. Research shows, in the second half of the seventeenth century and up until the eighteenth century, an increase of the numbers of the Congregations of Artisans, and even the multiplication of these congregations in the Jesuit province of Lyon. This extension to more modest social categories also involves the reception of women. It is remarkable, too, to note the vitality of the demands of the masses for the dead. The case of the Congregation of the Artisans in Montpellier is exemplary. This sodality retained a real attractiveness in Montpellier's religious and associative life, even after the expulsion of the Society of Jesus, and it maintained the network with the other Marian congregations affiliated to the Primaria.Marian congregations have evolved: they are no longer confined to circles of dévots, but by extending to more modest social categories, they now form a community of "good Christians". They then give us a new insight into the religious behavior of urban societies during the Age of the Enlightenment.

Ungerer, Andre Gerhardus 24 July 2008 (has links)
More than 20 million copies of Warren’s book, The Purpose Driven Life (2002), were sold over the past 2 years. It is the best-selling hardback in U.S. history. Warren’s previous book, “The Purpose Driven Church” (1995), has sold over one million copies in 20 languages, and was selected as one of the 100 Christian books that. changed the 20th century. More than 415 churches/congregations in South-Africa have already purchased “The Purpose Driven campaign kit” and completed the 40 Days Campaign or are planning to do so. The name Rick Warren is synonymous with “Purpose Driven” and the popularity of his work as well as his influence in this country, justifies a study of this nature. This study wants to determine the effect of Rick Warren’s 40 days of purpose in the Circuit of Klerksdorp of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika. Warren (2002/3) provides five purposes for a believer in the church in his book, A Purpose Driven Life, which is according to him, the church’s purpose of existence. The book is divided into 40 brief chapters and participating congregations are motivated to use the book as part of their 40 days campaign. A Campaign Training Manual can be used complementary to the book helping congregations to prepare their campaign successfully. Chapter 1 of this study takes a look at the external and internal problems in the church. The question arises if the church is at all times sure of her purpose of excistence. There is a difference between efficiency (doing things correctly) and effectiveness, which is doing the right things correctly. The purpose of the church’s existence therefore involves choosing the right alternatives. The hypothesis of this study is that the 40 Days of Purpose is an excellent project for congregations to discover their purpose of existence while it also strengthens the process of building up the local congregation. With this hypothesis in mind, chapter 2 provides the underlying theological principles, concepts and some definitions of the subject of building up the local church. Chapter 3 contains a description of the preparation, the course and the ending of the 40 Days Campaign. The participating congregations in the circuit of Klerksdorp are evaluated according to the guidelines of the Campaign Training Manual. A theological view of each of Warren’s (2002) five purposes is also presented. Chapter 4 provides the quantitative and qualitative research which was done in the Curcuit of Klerksdorp. Eight congregations participated in the research project and the respondents reactions are discussed. Interviews that took place whith the pastors of participating congregations, are also discussed. Chapter 5 contains a critical evaluation of the 40 Days of Purpose as well as the book of Warren (2002/3). The conclusion reviews the hypothesis and whether it can be confirmed. / Dissertation (MA (Theology) : Practical Theology)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Practical Theology / unrestricted
