The evolution of British imperial perceptions in Ireland and India, c. 1650-1800Chartrand, Alix Geneviève January 2019 (has links)
This dissertation explores the correlation between British colonial experiences in Ireland and India c. 1650 - 1800. While the traditional characterisation of Ireland as a settlement colony and India as primarily a mercantile colony would suggest diverse imperial encounters, a comparative analysis of the two shows significant similarities. Temporal and/or geographical distances notwithstanding, the study's thematic approach reveals recurring patterns regarding the relationships between colonisers and the colonised. The six chapters of this dissertation explore different elements of empire, concluding that comparable socio-political and agrarian principles were consistently implemented in both colonies. The first chapter explores history writing as a tool of historical appropriation and indigenous reconfiguration. The second looks at escalating legal responses to colonial violence and colonial jurisdiction's role in defining social norms; the third considers the evolving forms of punishment dealt to 'deviant' colonial subjects. The fourth chapter looks at similar processes of agrarian reconfiguration that revealed broader imperial attitudes towards landownership and the fifth one elaborates on the use of visual representations of empire as propaganda tools to shape public opinion. In the final chapter, selected experiences of the Irish in India illustrate examples of colonial subjects' collaboration in imperial expansion. By adopting a more heuristic and thematic approach to colonial experiences, this study adds to the growing literature that necessarily complicates the distinctions between metropole and periphery. It challenges the use of single points of reference which have routinely privileged the accounts and experiences of Britons in the scholarly analysis of cross-cultural and imperial interactions. Blending early modern and nineteenth-century experiences with regional and global history, the chapters address the history of emotions, law, material culture, economy, and politics to argue that processes of influence and transformation were indicative of a more layered and evolutionary development in response to colonial challenges. Such experimental approaches provide a more sustained understanding of the processes of continuity and change in Britain's imperial evolution.

Destinos e trajetos: Edward Lee Thorndike e John Dewey na formação matemática do professor primário no Brasil (1920-1960) / Destinations and trajectoriess: Edward Lee Thorndike and John Dewey in primary mathematics teacher education in Brazil (1920-1960)Rabelo, Rafaela Silva 19 May 2016 (has links)
The following thesis focus on the contributions of Edward Lee Thorndike and John Dewey to mathematics education field. Specifically, the research had as aim to investigate the processes of circulation of these authors ideas in mathematics teachers education in Brazil and the correspondent appropriations, focusing the discussion in the period between 1920s and 1960s. The concepts of circulation, appropriation and connected history, and others, were operated based in such authors as Roger Chartier, Serge Gruzinski, Pierre Bourdieu and Michel de Certeau. Some of the sources were course programs, handbooks, travel reports, correspondence, papers and pedagogical journals. The analysis privileged the pedagogical travelers and the impressions. In relation to the impressions, the focus was the course programs, pedagogical libraries and handbooks. The conclusions point to the important part played by the pedagogical travelers in the circulation of Deweys and Thorndikes ideas, through publications referring to these American educators or based on practice in teachers education. Other ways that promoted the circulation were the course programs and the pedagogical libraries, where there are Deweys and Thorndikes works included or handbooks that mention them. Related to appropriation, Dewey is mentioned referring to general aspects of education, and Thorndike to more specific discussions related to arithmetic.

La fabrique matérielle et symbolique de la ville : le cas de Villeurbanne de 1900 à 1950 / The material and symbolic urban fabric. The case of the city of Villeurbanne from 1900 to 1950Rogalski Landrot, Boris de 13 May 2014 (has links)
My thesis, entitled “The material and symbolic urban fabric : the case of the city of Villeurbanne from 1900 to 1950” aims to analyse the mechanisms of urban fabric in order to highlight the role of political actors and the influence of urban experiences that lie outside of the municipality, thanks to which urban projects have been developed and spread in order to adapt Villeurbanne to an urban model. The late nineteenth century was a period of identity tensions in Villeurbanne in reaction to the project of annexation of the city by his powerful neighbour, Lyon. Municipal Council spread identity discourses in order to distinguish Villeurbanne and Lyon, and to mobilise inhabitants and convince politicians to reject the annexation. Jules Grandclément, socialist mayor from 1908 to 1922, rationalized the municipal management and introduced innovations to reform the city befor 1914. World War I disrupted the municipal level, but stimulated municipal intervention in urban planification. During the preparation of urban plan, municipal councillors represented Villeurbanne, not as a simple suburb, but as a city, and they organized exchanges of urban kowledges with other municipalities and especially with municipal experts of Lyon. Mayor Lazare Goujon (1924-1935) was directly related to the continuity of the initiatives of his predecessor. He innovated by introducing an ambitious urban policy that modified the urban morphology giving to Vileurbanne its urban attributes. The audience of urban transformations was such that Villeurbanne was represented as an example of modern city during the 1930s. Upon arrival at the head of the municipality in 1935, the Communists denounced the expensive urban policy of its predecessor, and they implemented a local policy in the context of the Popular Front. The political color of the municipality during the inter-war period was erased during the World War II in favor of the ideology of the Petain’s government. The real estate market slowed since the 1930s and stopped during World War II, but was reactivated by the State housing policy in 1950s. This State intervention in the field of urban planning expertise created conflicts but mostly generated a gap between the material and symbolic fabric of the city at the local level .

"Prabhat nagari" (1929-1953) : la contribution d’une compagnie cinématographique indienne à l’émergence du système Bollywood / Prabhat nagari (1929-1953) : an Indian film company's contribution to the rise of the "Bollywood system"Hamache, Soraya 03 July 2019 (has links)
For a long time ignored even denied because of its movies considered less serious and mediocre, the industry of Indian cinema based in Mumbai is nevertheless one of the most important and powerful in the world. Bollywood produced several classic films that should be more considered in our societies in particular in Europe and North America but also in India itself. However, views outside India are evolving in the mirror of new Indian visions of West. Bollywood is being more attractive which explains an increase of articles, web sites, documentaries, especially on the star system, but less attention was paid to the industry and its history. The 1930's constitutes an important step in Bombay film history as Brian Shoesmith demonstrated. With the arrival of a new innovation, talkies, this decade represents a keystone in Indian cinemas' s history and Hindi cinema's in particular. The case of the Prabhat company (1929-1953), one of the leading studios in the 1930s, is in this connection extremely interesting to analyze in order to understand the emergence of this industrial system, from within. Due to its history from Kolhapur to Poona and its narrow relations with Bombay, the analysis of this company producing quality films in Marathi and Hindi contributed to the development of the cinematographic industry in Bombay. Moreover, it allows us to understand its industrial choices, between regionalism, nationalism and globalization. Thanks to Prabhat example, we are able to seize the multiple facets of this emergent Bollywood system and its territories. Although this industry seems to become renowned nowadays, Hindi films were already present at an international scale since the 1930s-1940s. Nowadays, this history seems to be lost in the memories of the studio.

Based on a comparative study of the communities that migrated from India to French Indochina and British Burma, this thesis examines the place of Indian migrants in these two colonies during the first half of the 20th century. Indian minorities had a special place in the colonial system because of their various legal status, political and economic influence, and intermediary roles. These dynamics and the interest in studying them are illustrated by three specific case studies: 1. the dispute between Indian police officers and the municipality of Saigon in 1907; 2. Negotiations during the separation of Burma from the British Raj in 1935; 3. the repercussions of the 1929 stock market crash on government discourse on these communities and their place in colonial settings. The interaction of Indian minorities with colonial administrations indicates their understanding of imperial workings. They illustrate their skillful navigation of government structures and their mobilization to defend their interests. The analysis of their position as intermediaries highlights how minority communities have used their relationships to bypass lines of authority and power and sheds light on the plurality of hierarchical axes in colonial situations. These three case studies provide a more holistic conceptualization of colonial Indian minorities and support their complexity, highlighting their ambiguous allegiances and how they define and redefine themselves. The colonial authorities' speeches on those communities highlighted the link between the desirability of Indian minorities and Indian minorities and the need for their presence in the two colonies. This thesis helps deepen our understanding of what an empire is and the complex place that groups deemed homogenous and marginal may have occupied within it.

La concession française de Tianjin : une histoire connectée de l 'expansion des concessions étrangères en Chine (1846-1946) / The French Concession of Tianjin : a connected history of the expansion of foreign settlements in China (1846-1946)Chabaille, Fleur 09 October 2015 (has links)
This thesis aims to further clarify the territorial deployment of foreign settlements in China in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Although the period examined extends from 1846 to the retrocession of the last concessions in 1946, special emphasis is placed on the 1910s, a decade which spelled the end of expansionist logic. The first part analyzes the project of expansion led by the French Municipality of Tianjin from 1902 to 1946 in the Laoxikai District 老西開. This symbolic example serves both as pillar and springboard for writing a connected history of the expansion of foreign settlements. The case study on Tianjin provides a clearer analysis that encompasses Shanghai and Hankou in the second part. Establishing a perspective on the three cities reveals the principles and conditions under which foreign imperialism evolved in China, where mutually competing forces played leading roles. Further, it captures and illustrates the mechanisms of exchange and compromise engaged with Chinese officials and urban citizens. It also discloses the difficult position and weakness of the Chinese State before and after the 1911 Revolution, and the complexity of the relationship between national and local authorities. Finally, it offers a unique vantage point from which to observe sections of Chinese society within the treaty ports whose forms of expression and protest experienced a significant turning point in the 1910s. Relationships between these intertwined evolutions challenge both the dominant historiographical narrative on Western triumphant imperialism and orthodox representations associated with Chinese "modern" nationalism.
