Group Differentiation in Liberal Society

Lewis , Denise Felicia 11 1900 (has links)

This study is concerned with the contradiction in liberal-democratic society between the persistence of group inequalities on the one hand, and the firm commitment to individualism on the other. Individualism requires that group inequalities be absent, and that "particularistic policies" be avoided. Consequently, liberal governments tend to either ignore the issue of group inequality or abandon the liberal framework in order to deal with it. By examining the communal structure in pre-liberal societies, and the nature of modernday support for particularism, it has been found that the norm of universalism is to be preferred. The Indians in Canada have been used as an example illustrating the effects of a particularistic policy when applied in a liberal context. An analysis of the Indian case suggests that legal group differentiation does not reduce group inequality even within a liberal framework. The argument is advanced that a "liberal" solution to this problem is possible. Since liberal theory has been mute on this point, a solution is worked out by exploring what is consistent with classical liberal foundations as laid down by John Locke. In general, group differentiation may be practised (sic) in a qualified way provided it remains the exception, and is not established as a new norm.
/ Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

[Urban] Monastery

Singh, Shruti 22 June 2020 (has links)
Architecture that embodies contradiction has the opportunity to be a separation while creating new avenues. Separations help by distinguishing the two dualities. This thesis is an exploration on Architecture's response within complexity and contradiction. Within my project, the driving parameter is the program: A monastery for the Dominican order within an urban context of Washington DC. The architecture has two primary responsibilities, one is to preserve the sanctity of a restricted way of living and the other to engage with its profane surrounding. The two most important questions are: how does a monastery represent itself to a city; and how does a city represent itself from within a monastery. / Master of Architecture / Architecture that embodies contradiction has the opportunity to be a separation while creating new avenues. Identifier les entraves à l’activité de problématisation en formation. : Quelle auto-évaluation pour se professionnaliser ?

Goloubieff, Bruno 25 March 2013 (has links)
This research concerns the training of professionals in education-related fields. At the outset, a report dealing with the difficulties and hurdles encountered by these professionals in the work-place led to an investigation into training methods for such occupations. Since professional training combines two opposing objectives , namely instruction and independence of expression of ideas, the aim of this research is to present students with problem situations encountered in real life in order to dissect the issues and find solutions. In a society where resolving problems prevails, training in the analysis of problems is not always evident. During their course, some trainees are faced with obstacles which may lead to paradoxes. Identification of these obstacles shows that each trainee navigates between two opposing poles, and as part of training it is important that each trainee carries out self-evaluation to understand the implication of their actions and thus avoid lapses in logic and the creation of paradoxes.

Application of Triz to the Design of the Frame and Transmission Systems for Bicycles

Chen, Yu-Ren 12 September 2007 (has links)
TRIZ is a method that can be applied to analyze and solve engineering problem with contradiction effectively, but design problem does not easy to clarify. Thus, the purpose of the research is to propose a systematic methodology to make clear engineering problem and get just principles to design, designs of transmission system and frame of bicycle are the examples to explain. First, utilizing object tree method transform design question to better parameter, simultaneously the better parameter transformed to worse parameter. According to better and worse parameter suitable principles are selected with Contradiction Matrix and design transmission system of bicycle. Next, Inventive Principles is categorized by characteristic of design, and getting suite attribute. Thus, using asymmetry principle to design frame. Finally the Bottom Bracket be load force that deform magnitude is evaluating, and influence the result of position of tube of frame find out batter frame.

La métaphysique dans la sculpture de Jean Tinguely : mécanique, contradiction et métamorphose comme principes générateurs / Metaphysics in sculptural work of Jean Tinguely : mechanical, contradiction and metamorphosis as generator principles

Rolez, Anaïs 23 January 2015 (has links)
The topic of this PhD thesis is the study of the metaphysical aspect of the sculptural work of Jean Tinguely (Fribourg 1925 –Bern 1991). The main argument is the contradictory conception of a work which is anti-academic in the dadaist attitude, but which metaphysical dimension makes it close to the speculative tradition in art. The study of the sculptural work of JeanTinguely follows two main perspectives: art as pleasant game and art as purveyor of truth.
