Det tog mig 17 år : En kvalitativ studie med fokus på de sociala förändringarna och effekterna av att leva i en våldsam relation. / "It took me 17 years" : A qualitative study with focus on the social changes and effects of living in a violent relationship.Helger Bengtsdotter, Emilia, Höglund, Alexandra January 2023 (has links)
This sociological study delves into the enduring social and psychological consequences of domestic violence on women in Sweden. Through a qualitative approach, employing semi-structured interviews with seven survivors, the research uncovers the multifaceted aftermath of such violence in their lives. Central to this inquiry is the exploration of changes in self-esteem, trust in relationships, and mental health, framed within the context of existential sociology and coping theory. The findings reveal a significant shift in the women's perception of self and others, marked by increased vigilance, skepticism in new relationships, and a profound impact on mental well-being. The study employs existential sociology to interpret these shifts, viewing them as part of a broader existential crisis and a reevaluation of life’s meaning post-trauma. Coping theory is also utilized to understand the varied strategies these women adopt in response to their experiences, highlighting the role of individual coping capacities in their recovery processes. Economic impacts were found to be diverse among the participants, with some experiencing financial exploitation, underscoring the intersection of economic and personal abuse. A critical examination of the role of support systems, including women's shelters, social services, and legal frameworks, reveals gaps and challenges in addressing the complex needs of domestic violence survivors. This thesis contributes to the sociological understanding of domestic violence, emphasizing the necessity for nuanced support systems and policies that acknowledge the long-term sociopsychological challenges faced by survivors. It advocates for a comprehensive approach, integrating sociological theories to better comprehend and address the aftermath of domestic violence in women’s lives.

En Studie av Pi Patel’s Copingstrategier i Life of Pi : Religion och copingHendi, Haya January 2024 (has links)
This study examines how religion is portrayed in the movie Life of Pi (2012) and how the main character Pi Patel uses his faith to deal with and survive various challenges. People deal with challenges in different ways, and this study focuses on the combination of divine and human resources in the coping process. The aim is to explore Pi's use of religion through a content analysis of the movie, with particular focus on coping theory and the functional definition of religion as a theoretical framework. The analysis shows that Pi faces several difficulties on the lifeboat, such as an aggressive tiger, lack of food and water, as well as feelings of loneliness and hopelessness. To master these challenges, Pi combines emotional and practical coping strategies, where religion plays a central role. Religion gives him not only support and guidance but also motivation and companionship. The religion also contributes to his development as a person and causes him to embrace three religions. Through this study, we can better understand how religion can function as a coping mechanism and contribute to people's survival and development in extreme situations.

This study uses the coping theory and search for significance by Kenneth Pargament (1997) applied to the issue of occupational burnout among parish deacons in the Church of Sweden. The Social Insurance Report of 2020:8 presents deacons and priests as a profession at high risk of falling ill in stress related mental illness and sick leaves. The aim with this essay is to try to find whether there are aspects of Pargament’s coping theory that can be applied on this problem. Two main questions were answered:- What does the Church of Sweden’s governing documents state regarding the deaconry related to structure and role clarity? - How can we use Pargament’s coping theory on search for significance to understand the burnout issue among deacons as it is presented in the Social Insurance Report of 2020:8? Through a thematic analysis, three themes were distinguished: Clarity of Mission, Religions as Motivation and Structure and Management. These themes set the foundation for the result presented in this report. The chapter of Analysis deepens the connection to the coping theory and three specific assumptions of Pargament. The conclusion is that the governing documents are quite vague in presenting the deaconry related to structure and role clarity. There is also a lack of understanding, regarding deaconry and diakonia of the church, amongst parish leaderships which in turn leads to challenges and frictions for the local parish deacons. Many of them also wish for more liturgical elements and time for religious praxis within their working hours which results in a discussion of conserving or transforming the individuals’ significance.

Advocating Ideal Type Policy for Police Officer Wellness Based on Body Mass Index as a Predictor of Self-Reported Occupational StressChiappetta, Louis 01 January 2018 (has links)
Scholars have validated both the damaging presence of police officer stress and separately, their increasing obese condition in the United States. Previous studies of police officers focus on stress or body weight, but not these variables conjointly. The purpose of this study was to inform policy creation by examining the problem of officer stress in relation to the calculated body mass index (BMI) values and to gain insight into stress outcomes. Lazarus and Folkman's stress-coping theory served as the research lens to examine if BMI would significantly contribute to the percent change of R2 variance accounted for in the predictive effect of self-reported organizational and operational stress in the past 6 months after controlling for age, gender, rank, marital status, shift work, and seniority. This quantitative research consisted of survey data that were collected from 132 volunteer officers using McCreary's Police Stress Questionnaires. Multiple regression analysis tested the predictive relationship between BMI and stress and regression model outputs illustrated no statistically significant relationship between officer stress and BMI; however, post hoc analyses found shift work to be a significant stress predictor (p = .01). Based on regression results and this body of research, social change implications include police administrators promoting policies and training which protects officers from the harmful effects of stress and BMI. Lessened stress can have a positive influence on the police and the entire public they serve.
