C*-Correspondences and Topological Dynamical Systems Associated to Generalizations of Directed Graphs

abstract: In this thesis, I investigate the C*-algebras and related constructions that arise from combinatorial structures such as directed graphs and their generalizations. I give a complete characterization of the C*-correspondences associated to directed graphs as well as results about obstructions to a similar characterization of these objects for generalizations of directed graphs. Viewing the higher-dimensional analogues of directed graphs through the lens of product systems, I give a rigorous proof that topological k-graphs are essentially product systems over N^k of topological graphs. I introduce a "compactly aligned" condition for such product systems of graphs and show that this coincides with the similarly-named conditions for topological k-graphs and for the associated product systems over N^k of C*-correspondences. Finally I consider the constructions arising from topological dynamical systems consisting of a locally compact Hausdorff space and k commuting local homeomorphisms. I show that in this case, the associated topological k-graph correspondence is isomorphic to the product system over N^k of C*-correspondences arising from a related Exel-Larsen system. Mise en correspondance et gestion de la cohérence de modèles hétérogènes évolutifs / Evolutive heterogeneous models matching and consistency management

Pour permettre la compréhension et la manipulation d’un système complexe, le découpage en parties séparées est nécessaire. En Ingénierie Dirigée par les Modèles (ou Model Driven Engineering), ces parties sont représentées par des modèles, que nous qualifions de modèles partiels, dans la mesure où ils sont focalisés sur des domaines métiers distincts. Dans ce contexte de multi-modélisation, ces modèles sont dits hétérogènes quand ils sont décrits dans des langages de modélisation distincts dédiés à différents domaines métiers : DSML (Domain Specific Modeling language). La compréhension et l’exploitation efficace des connaissances relatives à un tel système supposent la construction d’un modèle global représentant son fonctionnement. La création du modèle global requiert l’identification des correspondances existant entre les éléments des différents modèles partiels. Dans la pratique, ces correspondances sont soit incomplètement identifiées, soit insuffisamment formalisées pour être maintenues lorsque les modèles partiels évoluent. Ceci limite leur utilisation et ne permet pas de les exploiter pleinement lors de la construction du modèle global ou du traitement de l’évolution des modèles partiels. L’apport de cette thèse est double. La première contribution est celle d’un processus permettant la création d’une vue globale du système par l’intermédiaire d’une composition fondée sur la mise en correspondance des modèles partiels. Les correspondances identifiées entres les éléments des modèles se basent sur des types de relations instanciées à partir d’un métamodèle de correspondance. Ce dernier est extensible (selon les spécificités du domaine d’application considéré) et permet de supporter les concepts relatifs à ce domaine. Les correspondances sont d’abord identifiées entre les méta-éléments des métamodèles respectifs des modèles partiels. Les correspondances entre les éléments de modèles sont ensuite obtenues par un mécanisme de raffinement, supporté par un langage d’expression sémantique ad hoc : SED (Semantic Expression DSL). La composition est dite « virtuelle » dans la mesure où les éléments figurant dans une correspondance ne sont que des références aux éléments appartenant aux modèles partiels. De ce fait, les modèles interconnectés par ces correspondances forment un modèle global virtuel. La seconde contribution est relative au maintien de la cohérence des modèles partiels et du modèle global. En effet, les modèles évoluant dans le temps, le changement d’un élément ou de plusieurs éléments participant à l’expression des correspondances, peut entrainer l’incohérence du modèle global. Pour maintenir la cohérence du modèle global, nous proposons un second processus permettant tout d’abord d’identifier automatiquement les changements réalisés ainsi que leurs classifications et leurs répercussions sur les éléments de modèles concernés. Par la suite, les différents cycles sont gérés à l’aide de l’expert puis une liste de changements est générée en fonction de la stratégie choisie et des coefficients de pondération. Enfin, le traitement des changements est réalisé de façon semi-automatique. Ce travail a été concrétisé par le développement d’un outil support nommé HMCS (Heterogeneous Matching and Consistency management Suite), basé sur la plateforme Eclipse. L’approche a été validée et illustrée à travers un cas d’étude portant sur la gestion du Service d'Urgence d'un hôpital. Ce travail a été mené en collaboration avec le CHU de Montpellier. / To understand and manipulate a complex system, it is necessary to apply the separation of concerns and produce separate parts. In Model Driven Engineering (MDE), these parts are represented by models qualified as partial models. In this context of multi-modeling, these models are called heterogeneous when they are described in separate modeling languages dedicated to different business domains: DSML (Domain Specific Modeling Language). Global model creation requires identifying existing correspondences between the elements of the partial models. However, in practice these correspondences are either incompletely identified or not sufficiently formalized to be maintained when the partial models evolve. This restricts their use and does not allow to fully exploit them for building the global model or for treating partial models evolution. The contribution of this thesis is twofold. The first contribution deals with a process for creating a global view of the system by means of a composition based on partial models matching. Identified correspondences between models elements are based on types of relationship instantiated from a metamodel of correspondences. This latter is extensible, depending on the considered application domain, and allows supporting the concepts related to this domain. Correspondences are firstly identified between meta-elements belonging to metamodels of the respective partial models. Correspondences between model elements are then obtained by a refinement mechanism, supported by an ad hoc Semantic Expression language: SED (Semantic Expression DSL). The composition is called “virtual” since elements represented in a correspondence are only references to elements belonging to partial models. Therefore, models interconnected by this correspondences form a virtual global model. The second contribution relates the consistency of the global model. Indeed, as models evolve over time, changing one or several elements involved in a correspondence, may cause the inconsistency of the global model. To maintain its consistency, we propose a second process enabling to automatically identify the changes, classify them and treat their impacts on the involved model elements. Management of repercussions is performed semi-automatically by the expert by means of strategies and weights. This work has been implemented through a support tool named HMCS (Heterogeneous Matching and Consistency management Suite) based on the Eclipse Platform. The approach has been validated and illustrated through a case study related to the management of a Hospital Emergency Service. This work was led in collaboration with the “CHU of Montpellier”.

A thorn in the side and its equivalents in French and Swedish : One sense realized as three different idioms

The purpose of this study is to analyse how three idioms, in English, French and Swedish, despite different lexical compositions are capable of conveying the same meaning. The idioms in question are a thorn in the side, une épine au pied/dans le pied and en nagel i ögat. This study is concerned with how different metaphorical images are used to express the same meaning. Furthermore, it examines what it is in the semantics of the lexical items that enables these idioms to express the same idiomatic meaning. Using a cognitive linguistic approach the analysis is conducted at a linguistic and a conceptual level. The analysis shows that these three different idioms are capable of conveying the same idiomatic meaning because they are motivated by the same conceptual metaphor.

Nul n’est sans savoir l’influence de l’ésotérisme sur la formation de la« littérature nouvelle » et pourtant, des questions essentielles demeurent toujours sansréponse : quelle place prend véritablement le fait ésotérique dans l’esthétiquesymboliste ? Jusqu’où peut-on parler d’ésotérisme, où celui-ci s’arrête-t-il, et quel estréellement son rôle dans l’avènement du sacerdoce poétique de la fin du XIXe siècle ?Notre réflexion se réfère à une méthode académique nouvelle qui a su proposerune définition de l’objet ésotérisme. Les différentes publications des historiens ontfavorisé une démarche historico-critique permettant l’isolement de critères identifiantaujourd’hui cette forme de pensée. À partir d’un des critères, l’analogie et lescorrespondances, nous aborderons l’ensemble des autres composantes, en explorant lesliens cosmologiques, anthropologiques et esthétiques qui se sont progressivement tissésavec les « sciences maudites ». Cette grille de lecture nous permettra de retracerl’avènement d’une véritable religion esthétique, d’approfondir la représentation de laNature considérée par les poètes comme le Liber Mundi, et de délimiter l’influence del’ésotérisme qui a concouru à l’originalité de l’esthétique symboliste dans l’histoire dela littérature française / No one ignores the influence of esoterism on the making of the "littératurenouvelle". Yet essential questions remain still unanswered: what is the real place heldby esoterism in the aesthetics of the Symbolist movement? How far reaches themeaning of the word, where are the borders of esoterism, and what was its contributionto the concept of the poet's priesthood at the end of the XIXth century?Our reflection refers to a new academic method which provided us with a definitionof the esoterism object. By their textual criticism, historians have isolated a number ofcriteria which allow us to identify this kind of thought. Starting from one of thosecriteria, i. e. analogy and correspondences, we will deal with all the others components,and explore the cosmologic, anthropologic and aesthetic links which were progressivelywoven with the "cursed knowledge". Exploiting phonological constraints and automatic identification of speaker classes for Arabic speech recognition

The aim of this thesis is to investigate a number of factors that could affect the performance of an Arabic automatic speech understanding (ASU) system. The work described in this thesis belongs to the speech recognition (ASR) phase, but the fact that it is part of an ASU project rather than a stand-alone piece of work on ASR influences the way in which it will be carried out. Our main concern in this work is to determine the best way to exploit the phonological properties of the Arabic language in order to improve the performance of the speech recogniser. One of the main challenges facing the processing of Arabic is the effect of the local context, which induces changes in the phonetic representation of a given text, thereby causing the recognition engine to misclassifiy it. The proposed solution is to develop a set of language-dependent grapheme-to-allophone rules that can predict such allophonic variations and eventually provide a phonetic transcription that is sensitive to the local context for the ASR system. The novel aspect of this method is that the pronunciation of each word is extracted directly from a context-sensitive phonetic transcription rather than a predened dictionary that typically does not reect the actual pronunciation of the word. Besides investigating the boundary effect on pronunciation, the research also seeks to address the problem of Arabic's complex morphology. Two solutions are proposed to tackle this problem, namely, using underspecified phonetic transcription to build the system, and using phonemes instead of words to build the hidden markov models (HMMS). The research also seeks to investigate several technical settings that might have an effect on the system's performance. These include training on the sub-population to minimise the variation caused by training on the main undifferentiated population, as well as investigating the correlation between training size and performance of the ASR system.

In der vorliegenden Masterarbeit wird erläutert, wie ein klassischer Schema Matcher erweitert wird, um Komplexe Korrespondenzen (many-to-many-Korrespondenzen) und allgemeine Funktionen zwischen zwei Schemata auszudrücken, sowie deren automatische Entdeckung als Erweiterung der herkömmlichen Entdeckung von (1:1)-Korrespondenzen. Der letzte Punkt widmet sich dabei einem Gebiet der Datenintegration, das bisher kaum untersucht wurde, und es werden Ansätze vorgestellt, die für viele Schema Matcher eine Bereicherung darstellen können. Zu diesem Zweckwerden im ersten Teil der Arbeit Komplexe Korrespondenzen und Funktionen im Bereich des Schema Mappings ausführlich vorgestellt.

Synaesthesia and Visual Music in Swedish Silent Film

This thesis examines how visual music in Swedish silent film served as an allusion to sound, either as a cinematic effect or as an intertwined part of the film narrative. Drawing on the concepts of synaesthesia and visual music, a discussion on how both concepts relate to each other serves as the key method for analyzing a selection of films. By defining synaesthesia in relation to concepts such as Gesamtkunstwerk and photogénie, the analysis examines different synaesthetic expressions through visual music in Swedish silent film. This thesis argues that Swedish film was influenced through several forms of art and ideas from different cinematic cultures. By comparing synaesthetic expressions through visual music in Swedish silent film and other cinematic cultures, this thesis suggest that the concepts were used in different ways to define cinema as a unique form of art.

Detecção de objetos é um problema clássico em visão computacional, presente em aplicações como vigilância automatizada, análise de imagens médicas e recuperação de informação. Dentre as abordagens existentes na literatura para resolver esse problema, destacam-se métodos baseados em reconhecimento de pontos-chave que podem ser interpretados como diferentes implementações de um mesmo arcabouço. O objetivo desta pesquisa de doutorado é desenvolver e avaliar uma versão generalizada desse arcabouço, na qual reconhecimento de pontos-chave é substituído por reconhecimento de grafos-chave. O potencial da pesquisa reside na riqueza de informação que um grafo pode apresentar antes e depois de ser reconhecido. A dificuldade da pesquisa reside nos problemas que podem ser causados por essa riqueza, como maldição da dimensionalidade e complexidade computacional. Três contribuições serão incluídas na tese: a descrição detalhada de um arcabouço para detecção de objetos baseado em grafos-chave, implementações fiéis que demonstram sua viabilidade e resultados experimentais que demonstram seu desempenho. / Object detection is a classic problem in computer vision, present in applications such as automated surveillance, medical image analysis and information retrieval. Among the existing approaches in the literature to solve this problem, we can highlight methods based on keypoint recognition that can be interpreted as different implementations of a same framework. The objective of this PhD thesis is to develop and evaluate a generalized version of this framework, on which keypoint recognition is replaced by keygraph recognition. The potential of the research resides in the information richness that a graph can present before and after being recognized. The difficulty of the research resides in the problems that can be caused by this richness, such as curse of dimensionality and computational complexity. Three contributions are included in the thesis: the detailed description of a keygraph-based framework for object detection, faithful implementations that demonstrate its feasibility and experimental results that demonstrate its performance.
