Conceptual metaphors in English and Shona: a cross-linguistic and cross-cultural study

Machakanja, Isaac 05 1900 (has links)
The study is a comparative analysis of conceptual metaphors in English and Shona. The objectives of this study were: to compare the metaphorical expressions of English and Shona in the same or similar domains in order to establish on the one hand whether there are similarities and/or differences cross-linguistically and cross-culturally in the metaphorical construal of reality between these two languages and on the other hand, to establish what the underlying motivation is for the similarities and the differences between these two unrelated languages. The thesis also explores the reasons for the similarities in terms of particular assumptions underlying conceptual metaphors, that is, embodiment and ecological motivations. / Linguistics / D. God’s objective beauty and its subjective apprehension in Christian spirituality

De Bruyn, David Jack 09 1900 (has links)
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 303-325) / The topic of God’s beauty, while receiving attention in theological aesthetics, is not often a focused pursuit in Christian spirituality. The study attempts to answer the question of what the nature would be of an Evangelical Protestant Christian spirituality predicated upon seeking and apprehending God’s beauty. The study establishes the relevance of beauty to Christian spirituality. It then develops a definition of God’s beauty from Jonathan Edwards. God’s beauty is found to be his love for his own being. Examining Scripture and Christian history, the study establishes that God’s beauty was regarded as an objective reality until the Enlightenment. The focus of the research then turns to the subjective apprehension of beauty, and examines the methodology of pursuing beauty in art, and finds parallels in spirituality. The study considers the epistemological dichotomy of subject and object with reference to beauty, and considers Christian proposals for a form of correspondence theory for transcendentals. The findings are united in a model of spirituality. Apprehension of God’s beauty occurs through the subject possessing a correspondent form of God’s love. Findings from the aesthetic and epistemological study are united with theology to suggest that this love can be cultivated through four areas: Christian imagination, an implanted new nature, the exposure to communion with God, and the nurture of spiritual disciplines. Each of these areas is explained and justified as means to cultivate correspondent love. The postures and approaches found in the study of art and epistemology are used for explaining the nature of correspondent love. Evangelical Protestant Christian spirituality predicated upon seeking and finding God’s beauty is one which cultivates love for God that corresponds with God’s own love. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D. Beyond narrative : a cross-modal approach to soundtrack composition

Georgiou, Chrystalla January 2017 (has links)
This research project addresses the problem of scoring non-narrative film work. Deprived of a narrative content to follow, the composer faces the fundamental problem of deciding what other elements should be considered for establishing a meaningful relationship between the screened events and the music soundtrack. In order to mitigate the problem, this research project investigates the possibility of applying cross-modal principles to soundtrack composition, and systematically exploits the human ability to experience or interpret the information channeled through one sense modality in terms of another. After the Introduction which explains the research aims and methods, the thesis is structured into subsequent chapters. Chapter two considers cross-modal relationships in music and other expressive arts along with a brief consideration of Reception Theory and its relation to my work. Chapter three provides a set of four case studies of contemporary compositional approaches to non-narrative film. Chapter four demonstrates a new and systematic approach to soundtrack composition through a specially devised Table of Audio-Visual Correspondences, mapping parameters from one domain to another. This method is then applied in Chapter five in relation to a portfolio of original composed soundtracks. A detailed analysis is provided of each piece and the application of crossmodal logic to the scoring of non-narrative video is discussed and evaluated. Finally, Chapter six offers conclusions, recommendations, and outlines the scope for further research. An explanation is given of how work on this thesis has affected my own practice and compositional voice. A suggestion is also provided on how this thesis can benefit the wider film music academic and practitioner community.

Ombwiri du lac Onangué jusqu’à Bikélé : une anthropologie des correspondances interreligieuses au Gabon / Ombwiri : from the lake Onangué to Bikélé : an anthropology of interreligious correspondences in Gabon

Awanhet Ntawanga, Hugues 20 November 2015 (has links)
Based on an intensive field work related to ombwiri rituals performed in two provinces of Gabon, this dissertation discusses the relevance of common theorisation of African contemporary religions as expressions of syncretism. The author considers that syncretism cannot be applied unilaterally to African rituals, as it might only emphasize the diachronic level in cultural and linguistic borrowing, without outlying the synchronic one which makes the borrowing even possible. More consequently, syncretist theorisation neglects fundamental aspects of ritual creativity and specific empowerment to integrate what it likes or not, including outdoor elements resulting from historical and particularly cross-cultural conjunctions. Therefore, the author suggests to start up with a new conceptual framework of “interreligious correspondences”, so as to prevent scientific productions from colonial recurrent ideologies, and give evidence of cognitive mechanisms which habilitate African minds as others, to go on integrating new with old, extraordinary with ordinary, and all kinds of resources, in a permanent creative dynamism including the indefinite limit that one likes to give to oneself.

Odhad pózy kamery z přímek pomocí přímé lineární transformace / Camera Pose Estimation from Lines using Direct Linear Transformation

Přibyl, Bronislav Unknown Date (has links)

Mišta, Petr January 2009 (has links)
Detection of objects based on color is not commonly used method of computer vision. There are many methods thats deals with the detection of significant points, but the color information has been omitted. The goal of this thesis is to design method of the detection significant color image areas and these areas match up with areas detected in another image. I analyzed features of detectors required to identify the reciprocal correspondence of images, defined the color significance concept, described basic color models and their properties, and a design of statistically compiled data - based method was described. Algorithms for the detection of color use color models RGB and HSV. Correspondence of areas detected in different images is performedy Kohonen neural network. The first input vector can teach Kohonen neural network and the second vector is classified by this network. To remove erroneous classifications RANSAC method is used. As a result, the method can be used for basic and rapid determination of correspondence between images, or to speed up commonly used methods for detection of significant points. At the end of the thesis are presented programs, showing functionality and options of design methods. The designed algorithms have been developed in MATLAB.

Conception dirigée par les modèles à l’aide de langages de modélisation hétérogènes : application aux profils UML / Model-driven engineering using heterogeneous modeling languages : application to UML profiles

Noyrit, Florian 25 October 2012 (has links)
The various stakeholders who describe study and implement a complex system require viewpoints that are dedicated to their concerns. However, in the context of Model-Driven Engineering, approaches to define and implement those viewpoints are either too rigid and inappropriate or completely ad hoc. In addition, those various viewpoints are rarely independent from each other. Therefore, we must strive to identify and describe the relationships/correspondences between the viewpoints in order to be able to verify that the parts of the solution given by the various stakeholders form a consistent whole. The work presented in this thesis provides a way to define dedicated languages based on UML for the viewpoints. For this, a method that analyzes the semantics of the textual descriptions of the concepts of the domain we want to map to UML has been implemented to facilitate the definition of UML profiles. The results we get on the concrete test cases we considered are encouraging and go beyond results of existing tools. To define a viewpoint based on some UML profiles, this thesis provides a method that lets the methodologist make explicit the viewpoint he/she wants. A tool can then generate the tooling that implements this viewpoint in a modeling environment together with the corresponding dedicated language while current practice is based on an implementation essentially manual. To assist the identification of relationships between the viewpoints, this thesis proposes again to analyze the semantics of textual descriptions of concepts of the languages used by the viewpoints. Used in combination with existing syntactic heuristics, the proposed approach provides good results when the terminologies of the languages that are analyzed are far apart. A theoretical framework based on category theory is provided to make explicit formally correspondences. To use this framework, a category for languages based on UML has been proposed. To be able to make explicit the correspondences between the models of those languages as well, the category of OWL ontologies is used. A solution is proposed to characterize correspondences that are more complex than the simple equivalence relationship. This theoretical framework provides a way to define formally complex relationships that can be used to verify the consistency of the architectural description. Once the description of the architecture has been integrated according to the formal correspondences, the issue of consistency is considered. The experiments carried out on a concrete test case to verify consistency on a syntactic perspective give satisfactory practical results. The experiments carried on the same test case to verify consistency on a semantic perspective don’t give satisfactory practical results.

The effects of rime analogy training on word reading for efl sixth graders

Huang, Shiu Yu Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of rime analogy training on sixth graders with respect to their decoding skills, attitudinal changes towards reading English words, and perceived difficulties with word reading. The present study comprised 2 phases: the first being a small-scale pilot study, the second a formal study. The pilot functioned as a preparatory work for the formal study. In the pilot, the testing materials, instruments, and activities of the training were tested and revised to be more suitable for the formal study. From the students’ responses, the researcher obtained some insights about their thinking process and learning difficulties and this allowed for designing a more complete interview for the formal study. In the formal study, there was an experimental group and a control group, each comprised of 25 sixth graders from two classes in one elementary school in Tao Yuan county. The experimental group received rime analogy training. The teaching materials were selected from the participants’ textbooks word bank, from the second grade to the fifth grade, as a basis for making analogy. The control group was taught with the same materials but received phonics instruction that focused only on grapheme-phoneme correspondences rules. Both groups received two 10-minute training sessions a week for 10 weeks, and were administered the same pre-and post-test (generalization test) to assess decoding skills, and a pre-and post-training questionnaire on attitudes toward reading English words. After the training, six participants from each group were further interviewed to understand their thinking process and perceived difficulties. The findings are as follows. In terms of the decoding skills, the post generalization test showed that no significant statistical difference was found between the two groups. In light of the attitudinal changes, only within-group comparisons of the experimental group were significantly different. In view of perceived difficulties, the interviews revealed that the difficulties in the control group were more complicated than those in the experimental group. The most noteworthy finding is that the lowest-proficiency participants in the experimental group not only outperformed their counterparts in the control group in decoding skills, but also demonstrated far more positive attitudinal changes after the training. The findings provide supporting evidence for the value of rime analogy training in promoting students’ decoding abilities and positively changing students’ learning attitudes. The nature of students’ perceived difficulties is also discussed, in respect of which several pedagogical implications and suggestions for future studies are outlined.
