Leadership in the 2008 financial crisis : Understanding dimensions of Transformational & Transactional leadership during financial crisis in financial institutions

<p>Problem: -The 2008 Financial crisis has caused global impact on business market and led to question leader's competence. Prior study has found that leadership contributes certain effects to organizations' performace under a crisis situation, however there is lit-tle study which has been made regarding to identifying crisis leadership and its compe-tence and management during crisis.</p><p>Purpose: - The purpose in this thesis is to bridge the gap between crisis management and leadership by finding answers of five research questions. Which are ; How this 2008 financial crisis has affected the international financial institutions, what leadership dimensions are performed by leaders during the financial crisis, which leadership style do leaders tend to rely on in international financial companies during the 2008 financial crisis, why do leaders tend to rely on the dimensions of transformational leadership or transactional leadership and what are the implications in this study that could lead to fu-ture research.</p><p>Method: - The study employs qualitative methods to fulfill better and deeper understanding about 'how' and 'why' on leadership dimension during the 2008 financial crisis. Data were collected by personal interviews to support and act as a foundation of the analysis to answer the research questions. The choice of interviewees is middle managers of large international companies in the financial sector in Sweden and South Korea.</p><p>Conclusions: - The finding of this study indicates that 2008 financial crisis has af-fected on large international financial corporations in Sweden and South Korea. More-over, three dimensions of transformational leadership are strongly performed by the middle managers during the 2008 financial crisis. The three strongly performed dimen-sions are (1) Inspirational Motivation, (2) Charisma/ Idealized Influence and (3) Indivi-dualized consideration.</p>

Financial and currency crises : contagion and welfare costs in emerging markets

Crises in emerging markets during the 1990’s pose a challenge to understand why economies with apparently strong fundamentals did face severe devaluations and severe disruption in their functioning. We study three different aspects of crises: i) Contagion is defined as the possibility of a domestic financial or currency crisis to spread to other countries. We study the 1990’s crises and introduce a new measure for defining financial crises and isolating their impact on currency crises and vice versa; ii) During the 1990’emerging countries in crises suffered severe adjustments in the level of consumption. We build on Lucas’s measure of welfare loss and derive a more comprehensive measure that includes: total loss; loss related to changes in consumption growth rate; to volatility of consumption; and, to changes in the level of consumption; iii) Trying to explain the behaviour of consumption after crises in emerging markets during the 1990’s we found contradicting theoretical approaches and empirical results. We solve the model of intertemporal maximisation of consumption assuming that agents maximise over several periods at a time. We extend the intertemporal framework to include the decision of participating not only in the loanable funds market but in other financial assets and derive the solution for a stock market. The results imply an alternative to the specification of the Euler equation for consumption with more explanatory variables previously omitted.

How a bank organization handles robberies - A question of crisis management

Organizations are in today’s business society faced with an increasing number of crises. The knowledge about how to manage a crisis has become an important tool for competitive advantage. The question is no longer if or when an organization will experience a crisis, but rather in what form and how prepared it is when a crisis actually occurs. The many networks of today’s business society make organizations even more vulnerable to the possibility of indirectly being affected by a crisis. This paper focuses on the banking industry as banks form an important part of many business networks. Furthermore, focus is put on the immediate form of a crisis and specifically robberies. The immediate crisis reflects the importance for an organization to be prepared as the immediate crisis by its nature gives little or no warning, following that it is more difficult to prevent these types of crises. The banking industry is often discussed in terms of stability and security whereas the crisis brings instability and uncertainty and challenges the organization’s structure. The purpose of this thesis is to understand how and why crisis management concerning robberies is implemented within a bank organization. This paper looks into the current theories discussed in the literature and the field of crisis management, the authors have chosen a qualitative approach and have performed a number of interviews, both with internal and external parties. Through the research performed the conclusion was drawn that the bank organization is very professional in their handling of crisis management concerning robberies. The bank has identified the importance of having a well prepared plan as a crisis situation such as robbery occur and the policies on crisis management concerning robberies has, for an extensive time period, continuously been processed and developed. The policies developed include all aspects of a crisis, both educational program in the Pre-crisis stage, aspects to consider and how to act when a robbery occurs, and also how the organization responds in the Post-crisis stage. The bank organization has in their approach chosen to a great extent to handle the work with crisis management internally. It was concluded that, since the bank organization has, during an extensive period of time, identified the risk of being robbed as a constantly relevant issue, the policies has been processed and developed repeatedly to cover all aspects of a crisis. The implementation of the policies is in the Pre-crisis and Crisis stage performed without any flexibility as they are explicit in their design and covers every aspect of a crisis. Contrary, the implementation in the Post-crisis stage has a more flexible approach as the Crisis group is working with people that experiences a situation of trauma. It is acknowledged that the bank organization is following the different stages of crisis in their policies, dividing the responsibility of the implementation of crisis management in each and every stage.

Crisis Management : The nature of managing crises

Purpose - The purpose of this thesis is to provide recommendations for commercial organizations when managing crises. By examining the ongoing operations of health care organizations the thesis will investigate the application of a similar structure toward commercial organizations. Background - In the globalized a fast paced reality we operate in it is essential for organizations to be prepared for the unthinkable. This have been illustrated not only in reality, but also empathized by a vast amount of researchers. A survey made by Steelhenge, an international consultancy, argues that organizations are not sufficiently prepared for crises. Researchers have also notified this lack of crisis preparedness within organizations. We argue that being crisis prepared is an essential factor and responsibility for commercial organizations in modern society. Method - In order to answer the research questions we have used a qualitative research method. The qualitative research method is further linked to the descripto-exploratory purpose, abductive reasoning and directed content analysis that provide a mixture of concept and data driven categories. We have conducted semi-structured, one-on-one interviews within health care organizations and commercial organizations. The respondents were chosen by a purposive and self-selecting sampling method. Conclusion - The empirical study suggests that there are learning’s to be considered for commercial organizations by applying health care organizations operational structure. What can be concluded is that health care organizations rely on coordination between individuals or teams to solve multi-functional issues. Commercial organizations would implement CMT’s to use a similar structure with all the essential factors for efficient coordination.

Crisis Management Planning: A Case Study of Man-Made and Natural Crisis Events in Higher Education

Due to crisis events that have shocked several college and university campuses, many of these institutions have begun to look for ways to respond effectively to those events. However, higher education is generally not equipped or prepared to respond to crisis events. Thus, crisis management research in higher education should be explored. Principles of organizational learning and organizational development from corporate management America were used in this qualitative study to explain how leaders in higher education institutions prepare for crises and learn from their crisis experiences. Chaos theory provided the theoretical lens for the study. Purposeful sampling was utilized to select two institutions and purposely identified administrators at those sites. Interviews gleaned the lived experiences of the participants. Data analysis revealed five themes: conflicting definitions, institutional response to crisis, continuous learning, institutional issues related to a crisis, and leadership roles during a crises. The findings support the importance of developing a crisis management plan, disseminating the plan to all stakeholders, and application of continuous learning principles to evaluate the plan and actual crises responses before, during, and after a crisis event.

This research aims to explain mechanisms of the new twin crisis, the influence of such a crisis on European integration, and identify indicators that can predict such a twin crisis. First, the old and the new twin crisis will be explained and the necessity of this research will be elaborated upon. Hereafter, the main mechanisms of the new twin crisis will be identified based on a literature review. From this literature review a set of indicators, accompanied by certain thresholds, will be created that can indicate that a twin crisis is about to happen. These indicators will be used to analyse data from 1970 until 2015 to asses whether this new twin crisis has occured in the past and what its political consequences were. The constructed mechanism to explain the new twin crisis and the list of indicators will be put to the test by conducting an indepth case study of Italy and its risk of encountering a new twin crisis. Based on the model that links the new twin crisis to political consequences, the case study attempts to link the new twin crisis to the European integration project. This research will lay the foundation for the creation of predictive models for the new twin crisis and provide insights in one of the main destabilisers for European integration. It therefore establishes a set-up and lay-out for future research in this specific field.
