Villains and Heroes: An Analysis of Outlander’s Portrayal of Sexual ViolenceJanuary 2019 (has links)
abstract: Using a critical textual approach and a feminist lens, this paper analyses the television adaptation, Outlander, and its depictions of sexual violence. The nature of adaptation and how the adaptation process can lead to incidental as well as intentional alterations in the storytelling are addressed throughout the paper. The analysis is done in two parts, the first exploring emergent themes such as the use of bodies’ geographic location, scars, and nudity to depict messages about power, the impact of the adaptation’s choice to promote Jamie’s perspective, and the use of cinematic techniques as narrative devices. The second half of the analysis covers how notable characters and events are framed by the show to promote a division between pure evil (embodied by Capt. Randall) and the heroes of the story, Claire and Jamie, whose problematic behaviors are minimized or promoted by the narrative. Many of the scenes in the show can be read multiple ways, sending different or even contradictory messages. However, despite the positive critical response to the show, this paper argues that Outlander still reinforces the notion that female characters are natural victims, and undermines the trauma of their assaults, in contrast to the focus given to the rape of Jamie, the heterosexual male lead. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Communication 2019

John Berger, Paris Hilton, and The Rich Kids of Instagram: The Social and Economic Inequality of Image Sharing and Production of Power Through Self-PromotionGallagher, Meghan M 01 January 2015 (has links)
This thesis updates John Berger's work of critical visual theory, Ways of Seeing, to accommodate emerging web 2.0 technologies and new social media platforms. It analyzes the symbols of wealth and status encoded in both 15th century oil paintings and contemporary Instagram posts and attempts to dissect how American celebrity culture complicates methods of self-promotion and upscale emulation.

Previous issue date: 2009-08-07 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This research had as objective recounts the history of the woman Quitéria Bandeira de Melo
and the priest Antônio Soares Barbosa, both of them accused of articulating a supposed
conspiracy to murder Jerônimo José de Melo e Castro, governor of Parahyba territory during
the period from 1764 to 1797. In order to do that, an analysis of the discursive practice related
to the sexual, religious, and gender morality in that colonial possession in the second half of
the eighteenth-century was made. The study used as source copies of the speeches contained
in the manuscripts hold by the Foreign Historical File of Lisbon, Portugal. The analysis was
made in the perspective of the Critical Discourse Studies with focus on the relationships of
power related to the gender category. It is expected that the result of this research can
contribute to a better understanding of the religious moral conduct imposed to women through
the discursive practices in the period from 1770 to 1785 in the colonial Parahyba.

My proposed PhD, titled Zola's Naturalism in The Rougon-Macquart: The Fatality of Sexuality, aims to study the basics of the naturalistic novel in the second half of the nineteenth-century France. Firstly, I have looked back at previous critical studies that were dedicated to the themes of sexuality and/or fatality in Zola's writing. This introductory chapter helped me understand how far critics have gone and what a long way we still have to go before we can fully appreciate the importance of these themes in the context of naturalism. Throughout the twenty novels that make The Rougon-Macquart series, I studied the fictional characters in their being, their appearance and their evolution in space and time. I therefore investigated whether or not these characters were masters or slaves of their space and time and beyond that, what influences they had on each other. Afterwards, I questioned the fecundity of the theme of sexuality in Zola's work to find out both the aspects of originality in his writing and his contribution to the modern novel. Nevertheless, I have criticized Zola on a wider angle as an emeritus writer with his own "weaknesses". Methodologically, I have largely used the semiotics approach along with psychoanalysis due to the specificity of sexuality. Despite the wide range of critical studies on Zola's novels, in my sense, most of them have so far failed to tackle naturalism at its foundations, i.e. sexuality. In fact, if one attempted to free The Rougon-Macquart from the theme of sexuality, neither the Rougon-Macquart family would exist nor the twenty novels they generated. Studying sexuality therefore appeared to be essential to the understanding of the naturalistic theory. However, and surprisingly so, most of Zola's critics have avoided that inescapable theme, perhaps more likely for reasons of decency rather than for scientific ones. It is in such context that I have decided that it was time to bring it to light for the sake of truth about the knowledge of Zola.

Jarðnæði; Tranquil Terra / Jarðnæði; Tranquil TerraMaríudóttir, Katla January 2014 (has links)
“Jarðnæði; Tranquil Terra” is a meditation on the relationship between the dwelling and the dramatic ever-changing landscapes of the rural Icelandic countryside. The project is anchored in a place with a long and complex history and with a profound relationship with its landscapes - a place of wandering churches, lifesaving shipwrecks, growing houses, teeth in the ground, paths lined with crosses to protect against the ghosts and other dark creatures. It is a place where everything is vibrant, alive and has a story to tell. In the journey to the Tranquil Terra I navigated by means of cartography and critical fiction in search of ways to rethink the Icelandic architectural heritage beyond the nature-culture divide.

Life and Death in the Book of Jonah: A Rhetorical-Critical StudyGinter, Isaac 11 1900 (has links)
Consistently throughout the book of Jonah, the author draws attention to matters of life and death. The present study argues that by approaching this recurring subject through a rhetorical-critical approach, it is evident that the author has intentionally constructed a motif of life and death, which they implement as the foundation for the theme of YHWH’s sovereignty that runs throughout the narrative. In this way, the motif is designed to build anticipation which comes to its climax as Jonah and YHWH converse directly in Jonah 4. This thesis argues that the presence of this motif is found in both the recurring key words and key situations connected with the concepts of life or death. Furthermore, the study identifies the purpose of Jonah as a declaration of YHWH’s sovereignty over matters of life and death, yet with a tendency toward mercy for the repentant. This is realized in and through the very motifs under examination.

Is Female Empowerment Hindering Gender Equality? : A Case Study of Uuguja Island of Zanzibar TanzaniaAit Maalloum Ährlin, Emmy January 2023 (has links)
The work for female empowerment is prominent on the Unguja island of Zanzibar. Governmental support and local and international organizations are investing in women to achieve gender equality. The government of Tanzania has added changes to the law to protect women and prevent gender-based violence, as well as strategic measures to assist the stakeholders of the Zanzibarian society. Simultaneously, the reports of gender-based violence (GBV) are increasing on the islands according to the Zanzibar Female Lawyer Association. The study explores the measures taken by the government to eliminate violence against women with a focus on the role of the man in these structural social and legal changes. The study also shows the challenges that the added laws have faced in practice, and the balance between culture and legal system in a society, when a change is to take place.

Previous issue date: 2009-06-29 / The Critical Studies of Security appeared like counterpoint to the outline
conceptual of the traditional studies of security, with the intention of proposing a new
ontology and epistemology of the security and pointing to the necessity of the object of the
security being re-defined, as well as to promote a bigger reflection about like the threats and
to answers to those they are created. It is through these discussions about a critical approach
of the security guard that there stands out the Welsh School of Critical Studies of Security and
his principal authors, Ken Booth and Richard Wyn Jones. The project of studies of security of
these authors will be going to re-define the security like equivalent to the emancipation of the
individual of the structural cables what are prevented them from affirming freely inside his
communities, retaking for that the concepts of emancipation, technology and enlightenment
debated in the School of Frankfurt. Besides proposing a reconceptualização to the concept of
security, Booth and Wyn Jones will be going to retake the strategic studies showing like these
they influenced the intellectual rigidity of the discipline / Os Estudos Críticos de Segurança surgiram como contraponto ao arcabouço
autores, Ken Booth e Richard Wyn Jones.
