Child Maltreatment and Aggression: The Mediating Role of Moral Disengagement, Emotion Regulation, and Emotional Callousness among Juvenile OffendersHodgdon, Hilary Bridgette January 2009 (has links)
Child maltreatment has been linked consistently to the development of aggressive behavior. However, not all maltreated youth later demonstrate increased aggression. The present study examined two avenues of inquiry to explain this observed heterogeneity in a sample of 470 serious juvenile offenders enrolled in a prospective longitudinal study. Official reports of maltreatment history were obtained from the Department of Human Services (DHS) in Philadelphia providing information about the nature and incidence of abuse and neglect in childhood of the study participants. The first line of inquiry explored if particular maltreatment subtypes, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, neglect, and emotional maltreatment, as well as the severity and frequency of these maltreatment types, was related to increased aggression in adolescence. The second line of inquiry used structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the impact of three mediational factors, namely, emotion regulation, moral disengagement, and emotional callousness, on the maltreatment-aggression relation. I expected that not only would maltreatment in childhood be related to increased aggression in adolescence, but that this relation would be mediated by disruptions in emotional and cognitive development. In addition, I expected that these underlying mechanisms would be specific to particular subtypes of maltreatment. As expected, child maltreatment was related to increased aggression among youth. Physical abuse and emotional maltreatment emerged as the two maltreatment subtypes that best predicted aggression, whereas neglect and sexual abuse were not related to increased aggression. The study findings also suggested that higher severity and frequency of maltreatment contributes to increased aggression. Additionally, physical abuse and emotional maltreatment appeared to have a multiplicative effect, in that the combination of these two maltreatment subtypes resulted in the highest levels of aggression among youth in this study. Finally, as hypothesized, poor self-regulation mediated the relation between physical abuse and aggression, while heightened moral disengagement mediated the relation between emotional maltreatment and aggression. / Psychology

Balancing of Parallel U-Shaped Assembly Lines with Crossover PointsRattan, Amanpreet 06 September 2017 (has links)
This research introduces parallel U-shaped assembly lines with crossover points. Crossover points are connecting points between two parallel U-shaped lines making the lines interdependent. The assembly lines can be employed to manufacture a variety of products belonging to the same product family. This is achieved by utilizing the concepts of crossover points, multi-line stations, and regular stations. The binary programming formulation presented in this research can be employed for any scenario (e.g. task times, cycle times, and the number of tasks) in the configuration that includes a crossover point. The comparison of numerical problem solutions based on the proposed heuristic approach with the traditional approach highlights the possible reduction in the quantity of workers required. The conclusion from this research is that a wider variety of products can be manufactured at the same capital expense using parallel U-shaped assembly lines with crossover points, leading to a reduction in the total number of workers.
This thesis presents the design and implementation of a new generation of atom chips, that open novel experimental possibilities with very anisotropic magnetic microtraps. The thermal properties of aluminum nitride atom chips are studied in detail. We have optimized the set-up in order to trap more atoms and image the clouds as precisely as possible. In particular we have fabricated a miror of sub-λ/10 planeity on top of the chip surface. We study quasi-1D gases using in situ pictures of the fluctuating density pro_les and precise methods for their calibration and statistical analysis. We measure non-gaussian fluctuations, which provides a sensitive test of the thermodynamics of the system and gives a measure of three-body correlations. We study precisely the quasicondensation transition, measuring its scaling for the first time. In the 3D regime, a transverse condensation triggers the longitudinal quasicondensation. In the 1D regime, on the contrary, the appearance of a quasicondensate is governed by repulsive interactions only, and not by quantum degeneracy.Reaching record temperatures for 1D gases, we observe subpoissonian fluctuations which indicate that atomic correlations are determined at least locally by quantum rather than thermal fluctuations. We also discuss our observation of surprizingly e_fficient thermalization deep in the 1D regime, suggesting that e_ffective 3-body collisions break the integrability of the system.

Lot-Sizing Problems consist of determining the quantity of items to be produced in each period of a planning horizon. In general, production, setup and inventory costs are considered. In this work an extension of the Capacitated Lot-Sizing Problem is studied, which considers setup times, Setup Carryover and Setup Crossover, single machine, single level, multi items, multi periods and big-bucket (CLSP-SCC). New formulations to the CLSP-SCC are presented and avoid the necessity of defining new extra binary variables to model the setup crossover. Furthermore, symmetry breaking constraints are proposed for formulations from the literature. The theoretical relations between the studied formulations are proved. A Relax-and-Fix and Fixand-Optimize (RF-FO) hybrid heuristic is proposed, in which the Relax-and-Fix helps to find an initial solution and the Fix-and-Optimize improves it. Computational results are presented and the obtained results improve significantly when comparing the classical formulation with the formulation without setup carryover. Finally, the results obtained by the RF-FO heuristic and the computational package CPLEX are compared and, when they both are limited to the same computational time, the RF-FO heuristic obtains better results.
