Expertise Diversification and the Transformation of the Field of Contemporary Chinese Art: 1979-2012

Liu, Joyce Fang Chieh January 2012 (has links)
The decentralization of cultural production in China coincided with the introduction of economic and political reforms in 1979. The subsequent shift from a system of state propaganda production towards a market-oriented dealer-critic system of cultural production required a wider range of expertise beyond deep knowledge of the Western modern art canon or domain expertise. This dissertation investigates how the field of contemporary Chinese art (CCA) is constituted and transformed through a division of labor that reflects varieties of expertise using empirical data from 89 in-depth interviews with leading cultural professionals working in the CCA field, historical archival records, and participant observation. The study revises the conventional conception that domain expertise consistently shapes cultural fields. The main finding is that the kinds of expertise used are associated with how the CCA field has developed over the past three decades. Cultural professionals mobilize non-cultural expertise as well as cultural capital to enlist international support for CCA, establish aesthetic value, and extend the boundaries of cultural organizations that filter and deliver CCA to a broad audience. These results reinforce the agency perspective in institutional studies. Individual actors drive change in the CCA field while being embedded within it. Overall, the transformation of the field of contemporary Chinese art encompasses pragmatic adaptations to environmental shifts in resource distribution, the availability of new technologies of cultural production, and wider political and economic transformations. / Sociology

A DiscourseAnalysis of Leadership in Non-Profit Cross-Cultural Organizations in Chiang Mai, Thailand : A Minor Field Study

Arenander, Charlotte January 2014 (has links)
This study is a discourse analysis of leadership among Thai staffworking in non-profit cross-cultural organizations in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The purpose is to study the pervading leadership discourses, how these are affected by the fact that they are working in non-profit cross-cultural organizations, and how the staffexperiencesconflicting discourses in the organization. The material consists of six interviews with Thai staff. The result includeseight leadership discourses, where the two greatest are relational leadership and national culture. Relational leadership includes the importance of relationship between leaders and followers, something that also characterizes the Thai culture. The national culture discourse consists of descriptions of leadership stylesthatdepend onnational culture. Several of the other leadership discourses presented also include similarities with the Thai culture as explained by for example Hofstede (1980) and Ukosakul (2005), while others are descriptions of transformationalleadership, a leadership style said by some to be universal(Den Hartog, House,Hanges, & Ruiz-Quintanilla, 1999). The leadership discourses are affected by the fact that the informants are working in non-profit cross-cultural organizations, causing for example challenges in communication. The informants also describe that they adapt to theculturesof the people they are working with, but also expect leaders to adapt to the local culture and context. Despite differences in national culture, the organizational goals create a common base. The conflicting discourses that are describedhave to do with national cultures, both between different national cultures, but also between culture and personality or religious discourses.

Subsidizing criteria and its impact on cultural and sports organizations in Stockholm

Martinez, Carlos, Skersyte, Vaiva January 2016 (has links)
In this study we are going to analyse the criteria, on which Stockholm’s Municipality distribute public grants to cultural and sport organizations. Public funding is very importantfor many organisations, and even it is necessary for survival for some of the organisations. Although previous studies give some criticism for the criteria of the public funding. It is claimed that these criteria are not clear enough, or might have an impact on the activities in organisations. In order to achieve most objective results, we have used a qualitative research method, by interviewing representatives from cultural and sports sector. Study reviews the existing criteria of the local administrations in Stockholm for concession of financial support to the different organizations active in the field of culture and sports. Using as an argument the testimonies of the same actors involved in these areas, the study tries to find out the effects of those criteria on both social activities. During this study, new institutional theories, concerning legitimacy, decoupling and isomorphism, were used. The results of this study shows that the criteria are quite different for different types of organisations. They affect one organization and the other in a very different way. For cultural organizations the criteria havea direct effect, determining their future activities and projects. Although, for sportsorganizations the influence of the criteria is more an administrative routine that must becarried out, according to established standards.

In order to study this process, we have adopted the concept of space as defined by Milton Santos, who characterizes it as an inseparable system of objects and actions, being necessary to analyze it in a historical perspective. In order to better understand issues related to power, identify and characterize social actors and the relations established between them, we have adopted Carlos Matus concepts which were developed for the analysis of social reality. We have chosen the qualitative method, from which the secondary data were collected from news about the process of revitalization of the old Cassino da Urca and the installation of the Istituto Europeo di Design published in local newspapers and magazines, online newspapers and blogs and primary data were collected from unstructured observations of facilities around the building of the old Cassino da Urca, participation in neighborhood association meetings and semi-structured interviews with representatives of organizations involved in the process. Argumentative and interpretative analysis based on the theory and concepts mentioned above were adopted in order to analyze data. Based on the reports and documents relating to the installation process of IED in Urca, we have defined the period of analysis, which begins in August 2006 with the demise of the old Cassino da Urca building to IED, until the announcement of the partnership with another organization, in May 2012. The study identified that the installation of IED in Urca interfered in the configuration of space, especially with regard to the formation and performance of the association of neighborhood residents, the installation of new businesses in the vicinity of the building now restored, and consequently in the landscape of the neighborhood. We also focus on changes that extrapolate the boundaries of the neighborhood. Based on the data analyzed, it is emphasized that the cooperative relationship between the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro and IED was established around the appreciation by the Mayor of the technical capabilities of IED, the activities perfumed by IED like teaching, research and consulting in areas like architecture, design, fashion and communication, which reinforces the argument of the current valuation of cultural organizations in the process of (re) configuration of urban space, which are related to economic, social and symbolic aspects.

La fonction de marketing au sein des organisations artistiques et culturelles : nature et degré de son intégration effective / The marketing function within artistic and cultural organizations : nature et degree of its effective integration

Chabroux, Elodie 28 September 2018 (has links)
This work examines the nature and effects of integrating marketing logic into arts and culture organizations. The research aims to update and extend the knowledge acquired about the “conflict” between artists and managers exposed by Chiapello (1998) while orienting it towards the conflict between artists and marketers. As part of a comprehensive approach, this work is based on the case method. A qualitative exploratory study consisting of 17 interviews precedes the realization of 5 case studies, conducted at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), the Bibliothèque publique d’information (Bpi), the Musée national d’art moderne Centre Pompidou (MNAM), the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal (MBAM) and the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ). The implementation of the case studies is based on significant immersion periods in the institutions mentioned; during these periods semi-structured interviews and observations were collected and analyzed. In addition, this research led to a comparative France-Canada analysis. In addition to the report on the actuality of the conflict established, the thesis proposes ways to write an effective integration of marketing in cultural organizations.

The Use of Digital Storytelling for Impression Management by City Cultural Organizations

Nosrati, Fariba January 2019 (has links)
This dissertation provides a context-specific theory to understand how city cultural organizations can best use digital stories and impression management to create a desired image or enhance public perceptions. The generated model describes how a digital storytelling information system can affect user impressions of a city and the outcomes of using such a system. The study responds to a growing interest among cultural organizations regarding how to use emerging information technologies in the communication of cultural content. An interpretive case study was conducted on the “Love Your City, Share Your Stories” digital storytelling initiative in Hamilton, Canada. Data collection included 95 one-on-one interviews with the general public, the gathering of documents, and the researcher’s personal observations of participants during the data collection process. A systematic approach of data analysis was utilized to capture participant opinions and visualize this information in a data structure. Theories from the literature on information systems, organizational impression management, and narrative transportation ground the study. Findings suggest that a digital storytelling information system can be a viable tool to share city cultural heritage information and positively affect people’s perceptions of a city. The overall outcome of creating/maintaining a positive favorable impression is shaped through a layered experience of benefits by the users. Users are first personally engaged and informed about a city’s cultural heritage (primary benefits), and then they are influenced and inspired positively towards the city (secondary benefits). Findings show that technology characteristics (i.e., media quality and story quality) are critical factors affecting outcomes of use, and that user characteristics and context of use both moderate this relationship. This research provides theoretical insights and practical recommendations for researchers and city cultural organizations wishing to explore the utilization of newer information technologies, such as digital storytelling, for impression management. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / This dissertation aims to understand how city cultural organizations can best use digital stories and impression management to enhance public perceptions. Civilizando pela música: a pedagogia do canto orfeônico na escola paulista da Primeira República (1910-1930) / \"Civilizing\" through music: Orpheonic Singing teaching in São Paulo State schools in the First Brazilian Republic (1910-1930).

Gilioli, Renato de Sousa Porto 15 September 2003 (has links)
This research studies the Orpheonic Singing project in public schools of São Paulo State in the 1910s and 1920s. Despite of that, many of them have been largely forgotten or, at least, have had their role minimized in Brazilian history of music education. This project intended to civilize social customs, with the objective of building national identity, and to teach a point of earring tied to the standards of western erudite music tradition. Musical teaching experiences and axioms of the 1910s and 1920s decades were especially important for they were the main source used by Villa-Lobos to become Orpheonic Singing a national phenomenon in the 1930s in Brazil.
