Computational Methods for the Assessment of Brain Connectivity in Visuo-Motor Integration Processes

Erla, Silvia January 2011 (has links)
The identification of the networks connecting different brain areas, as well as the understanding of their role in executing complex behavioral tasks, are crucial issues in cognitive neurosciences. In this context, several time series analysis approaches are available for the investigation of brain connectivity from non-invasive electroencephalographic (EEG) and magnetoencephalographic (MEG) recordings. Among them, multivariate autoregressive (MVAR) models, studied in the frequency domain, allow quantitative assessment of connectivity separately for each specific brain rhythm. In spite of its widespread utilization and great potential, MVAR-based brain connectivity analysis is complicated by a number of theoretical and practical aspects. An important issue is that the MVAR model, commonly applied to neurophysiological time series, accounts only for lagged effects among the series, forsaking instantaneous (i.e., not lagged) effects. Despite this, instantaneous correlations among EEG/MEG signals are largely expected, mainly as a consequence of volume conduction, and the impact of their exclusion on frequency-domain connectivity measures has not been investigated yet. The aim of the present thesis was to introduce and validate a new methodological framework for the frequency-domain evaluation of brain connectivity during visuo-motor integration processes. To this end, we provided first a comprehensive description of the most common MVAR-based connectivity measures, enhancing their theoretical interpretation. Then, we introduced an extended MVAR (eMVAR) model representation explicitly accounting for instantaneous effects. Accordingly, new frequency-domain connectivity measures were defined, and procedures for improving model identification and significance assessment were given. The proposed approach was validated on theoretical illustrative examples, and then applied to EEG and MEG multichannel data recorded from subjects performing a visuo-motor task combining precise grip motor commands with sensory visual feedback. The theoretical validation showed that, in the presence of significant instantaneous correlations, the traditional MVAR formulation may yield misleading connectivity patterns, while the correct patterns can be detected from the new measures based on eMVAR model identification. The practical application showed that instantaneous correlations are non negligible in the considered neurophysiological recordings, strongly suggesting the necessity of using the proposed eMVAR model in place of the traditional one. Results showed that execution of the visuo-motor task evokes the activation of a specific network subserving sensorimotor integration, which involves occipito-parietal and precentral cortices. The new connectivity measures revealed connections which were peculiar of different brain rhythms. Specifically, in the alpha frequency band (8-13 Hz) we documented an enhanced driving role of the visual cortex on the left motor cortex, suggesting a relation between this rhythm and the lateralization of the visuo-motor task. In the beta band (13-30 Hz), task-induced connectivity changes were bilateral, suggesting an involvement of both hemispheres. In both alpha and beta bands, the new connectivity measures suggested an important role for the parietal cortex in mediating the information flow from visual to motor areas, confirming previous evidences from invasive studies based on intra-cranical recordings, TMS or PET examinations. This thesis was produced in collaboration with the Department of Physics of the University of Trento.

Feeding Distinction: Constrictions and Constructions of Dietary Compliance

Oncini, Filippo January 2018 (has links)
In this work, moving back and forth along complementary perspectives, I aim to provide an in-depth analysis of the social stratification of eating and feeding practices in an Italian context, with a special focus on the school canteen as a possible enhancer of children’s dietary compliance. Although the thesis cannot be read as a single monograph, the fil rouge that runs through the chapters presents new insights on the ways eating and feeding are organised, regulated, differentiated, and reproduced in Italy by adults and children. In fact, each chapter reads as an autonomous contribution, accompanied by a specific literature review, that distinctively adds to a branch of the research on food sociology, from health to consumption passing through childhood. Nevertheless, this does not imply that the chapters are disconnected, and the reader will often find cross references throughout the manuscript. The thesis is constructed on two different blocks, divided by methodology, but held together by the first chapter, in which I discuss the socio-philosophical foundation of the research. Here I initially draw from Bourdieu’s practice theory to discuss the theoretical and methodological foundations of the thesis, and I subsequently examine the concepts of eating and feeding practices, eventually outlining the contribution of each empirical chapter. Therefore, the first block seeks to identify theoretically informed empirical regularities using Bourdieu’s (2011) theory of capitals, and its adaptation to health behaviours as proposed by Abel (2007; 2008). This part aims to ‘quantify’ how capital constrictions shape food consumption and beyond. Chapter 2, focusing on gender differences in health behaviours among adults (Courtenay, 2000), analyses the determinants of dietary compliance, drinking behaviour and smoking, and how gender differentials change depending on the respondent’s levels of cultural capital. Chapter 3, however, which paves the way for the subsequent ethnography, focuses on the determinants of dietary compliance among Italian schoolchildren, and specifically on the role of the school canteen as an equaliser that can mitigate health inequalities by improving the diet of most disadvantaged children. In the second block, I focus on eating and feeding practices as social constructions. This part of the work allows me to go behind and beyond the empirical regularities shown in the previous chapters. Behind, because qualitative data provide an opportunity to consider the epistemological foundations and the political implications of the construction of dietary compliance, in school and at home; beyond, because they allow us to excavate in vivo how eating and feeding are part of a contested field of knowledge that depends on family endowments. The three chapters are hence based on the ethnographic fieldwork and the in-depth interviews conducted in four Italian primary schools. Chapter 4, partially rooted in the Foucauldian tradition of governmentality studies, uses the concept of strategy and tactics (de Certeau, 1984) to analyse the construction and implementation of a healthy meal and the resistances that arise around and within the school canteen. On a different note, chapter 5 makes use of the in-depth interviews with parents and the fieldnotes gathered in Poversano and Goldazzo school canteens to study how cultural and economic family resources shape parental feeding practices, their perception of the school meal and children’s knowledge of healthy food and cuisine. Finally, chapter 6 illustrates what happens to food education programs when they are applied in extreme contexts, such as the school of a poverty-stricken neighbourhood of Palermo. In the conclusions, I summarise the most important findings of the manuscript, and I draw attention to the possible implications for school food programs as well as for future directions for research.

Network identification via multivariate correlation analysis

Chiari, Diana Elisa January 2019 (has links)
In this thesis an innovative approach to assess connectivity in a complex network was proposed. In network connectivity studies, a major problem is to estimate the links between the elements of a system in a robust and reliable way. To address this issue, a statistical method based on Pearson’s correlation coefficient was proposed. The former inherits the versatility of the latter, declined in a general applicability to any kind of system and the capability to evaluate cross–correlation of time series pairs both simultaneously and at different time lags. In addition, our method has an increased “investigation power”, allowing to estimate correlation at different time scale–resolutions. The method was tested on two very different kind of systems: the brain and a set of meteorological stations in the Trentino region. In both cases, the purpose was to reconstruct the existence of significant links between the elements of the two systems at different temporal resolutions. In the first case, the signals used to reconstruct the networks are magnetoencephalographic (MEG) recordings acquired from human subjects in resting–state. Zero–delays cross–correlations were estimated on a set of MEG time series corresponding to the regions belonging to the default mode network (DMN) to identify the structure of the fully–connected brain networks at different time scale resolutions. A great attention was devoted to test the correlation significance, estimated by means of surrogates of the original signal. The network structure is defined by means of the selection of four parameter values: the level of significance α, the efficiency η0, and two ranking parameters, R1 and R2, used to merge the results obtained from the whole dataset in a single average behav- ior. In the case of MEG signals, the functional fully–connected networks estimated at different time scale resolutions were compared to identify the best observation window at which the network dynamics can be highlighted. The resulting best time scale of observation was ∼ 30 s, in line with the results present in the scientific liter- ature. The same method was also applied to meteorological time series to possibly assess wind circulation networks in the Trentino region. Although this study is pre- liminary, the first results identify an interesting clusterization of the meteorological stations used in the analysis.

On agonism and design: dialogues between theory and practice

Willis, Max January 2019 (has links)
Design has the potential to disrupt the status quo, yet disruption inevitably introduces new conflicts. One of the challenges of Social Design is to navigate the social, political and material conflicts that define contemporary lives and find new ways to transform them into creative resources. In addressing that challenge this thesis investigates agonism, a multifaceted theory that explicates conflict and grounds the need for such an investigation in design activism. The political implications, practical considerations and design potentials of agonism are examined in detail, and three core principles of agonism are defined: Identities, Dialogues and Agonistic Space. These principles are elaborated through their relation to intersubjectivity as a fundamental aspect of human experience, its interactional role in identity formation and communication, and its influence on the production and performance of space. A Constructive Design Research methodology is employed that contributes to the understanding agonism through a series of research trajectories and interventions. Design strategies to enact agonism are proposed around game, play and interaction design: Identities can be investigated through Role-Playing, Dialogues can be initiated through Storytelling, and Agonistic Space can be manifested as a Third Place. These strategies are field tested to examine various communities and the conflicts within them. A game intervention Mind the Gap confronts the endemic problem of the gender gap in academic and professional communities of ICT and STEM. A research intervention takes agonistic perspectives to elucidate conflicts of European migration and participatory urban planning in a neighbourhood community in the U.K. A digital intervention applies agonism towards engaging a platform community that has no material form, in the online project of commonfare.net. These interventions experiment with creative inquiry, game and play as design speculations, sketching and constructing playful inerventions that engage participants in agonism, to enact challenges to the status quo and illuminate potential solutions to complex societal issues. The utility and outcomes of the principles and strategies are evaluated with a focus on emergent intersubjectivity through Dialogic Syntax and Critical Discourse Analyses of gameplay, narratives and design artifacts. The main contributions of this thesis are its shift from empathic perspectives to intersubjectivity in design research, and its operationalization of the theory of agonism for Social Design. Secondary contributions include the elaboration of game and play as design speculation that includes critical reflections on their real-world practices, and the artifact Mind the Gap which has evolved from prototype to a co-created, community driven experience that continues to engage people in meaningful dialogues that challenge the status quo of the gender gap.

Assessing functional connectivity in the newborn brain using fNIRS

Popeo, Mariagrazia January 2019 (has links)
Functional connectivity represents a powerful approach to describe the intrinsic activity of the brain. It reveals the organization and correlations among anatomically separated regions supporting similar cognitive and sensory processes. Using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), the recurrent spatial characteristics of these patterns have been extensively explored in the adult brain and their disruption has been found to be associated with psychiatric and developmental disorders. Unveiling the processes of emergence of resting state networks at a very early stage of life could shed light on the neuronal origins of these diseases. However, the study of the inception and development of functional connectivity in the newborn brain poses exceptional challenges, due to the complexity of dealing with non-compliant subjects. To this end, cortical activity at birth can be investigated using functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) that represents a promising non-invasive neuroimaging method for developmental studies. In the present thesis, I applied fNIRS to assess functional connectivity in term neonates. The first part of the dissertation is dedicated to investigating the maturation of a specific resting state network, the Default Mode Network, within the first 48 hours of life. The study aimed to examine its emergence, for the first time, using optical imaging on newborns immediately after birth. While the majority of fMRI literature focused on large-scale spatial patterns, I took a different approach measuring an intrinsic and localized fingerprint feature of the network, consistently detected in adult subjects. In the second part of the dissertation, I aimed at improving the anatomical representation of brain connectivity, inferred only from signals collected at the scalp. Thus, I developed and validated a method for the reconstruction of spatially distributed functional signals on a dedicated template for term newborn subjects. The intent is to promote the shift from a sensor space description (one signal for each channel) to a source space representation in which the origin of the signal is reconstructed with better anatomical fidelity. The reliability of the reconstruction method was tested on synthetic and real data. In the former case, I simulated spatially correlated neural activity in the cortex, thus enabling assessment of the reconstructed images against a ground-truth map. Analyses of functional connectivity in both sensor and source space showed that the Default Mode Network is still immature at birth, with a lack of homotopic correlation in the lateral parietal cortices, and no evidence of anticorrelation with the Dorsal Attention Network, a well established feature in the adult brain. Overall the work presented in the thesis contributes to the understanding of functional connectivity in the infantâ€TMs brain and provides useful tools for source-based connectivity analysis and for probe design and optimization.

Advanced aspects of radiation protection in the use of particle accelerators in the medical field / Aspetti avanzati di radioprotezione nell'uso di acceleratori di particelle in campo medico

Infantino, Angelo <1985> 29 April 2015 (has links)
In this work, the well-known MC code FLUKA was used to simulate the GE PETrace cyclotron (16.5 MeV) installed at “S. Orsola-Malpighi” University Hospital (Bologna, IT) and routinely used in the production of positron emitting radionuclides. Simulations yielded estimates of various quantities of interest, including: the effective dose distribution around the equipment; the effective number of neutron produced per incident proton and their spectral distribution; the activation of the structure of the cyclotron and the vault walls; the activation of the ambient air, in particular the production of 41Ar, the assessment of the saturation yield of radionuclides used in nuclear medicine. The simulations were validated against experimental measurements in terms of physical and transport parameters to be used at the energy range of interest in the medical field. The validated model was also extensively used in several practical applications uncluding the direct cyclotron production of non-standard radionuclides such as 99mTc, the production of medical radionuclides at TRIUMF (Vancouver, CA) TR13 cyclotron (13 MeV), the complete design of the new PET facility of “Sacro Cuore – Don Calabria” Hospital (Negrar, IT), including the ACSI TR19 (19 MeV) cyclotron, the dose field around the energy selection system (degrader) of a proton therapy cyclotron, the design of plug-doors for a new cyclotron facility, in which a 70 MeV cyclotron will be installed, and the partial decommissioning of a PET facility, including the replacement of a Scanditronix MC17 cyclotron with a new TR19 cyclotron.

What Women Want: parlano le donne. L'ESPERIENZA DI CONSUMO E LA COSTRUZIONE DELLA CORPOREITA' / What Women Want: women talk. The consumption experience and the body construction

RANA, ITALIA 24 March 2017 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the relationship between the experience of consumption and body construction. The work is developed within a theoretical framework that provides for the integrated study of three disciplines: sociology, philosophy and experiential marketing. In particular, the sociological analysis of consumption has highlighted the complexity of postmodern consumption by placing within the broader socio-cultural context of the contemporary. A consumer wherever there are new ways of individual expression of identity with objects, innovative communication and sharing spaces (offline and online), and a plurality of styles of consumption that the consumer changes according lifestyles, tastes, preferences and social settings. In this context, then, it is important to study the consumption by a second theoretical perspective that involves experiential marketing, in order to understand the ways and strategies through which conveys marketing its product offering. Therefore, it was necessary to deepen the concept of consumer experience, providing a theoretical definition and its main characteristics. From these analyses it is highlighted the role of the body within the process of construction of experience. So, the study of philosophy was important to clarify the contrast between the body as an agent of experience and a vision that considers the body as an object of the intellect . In addition, through the analysis of the sociological literature, it has deepened the contrast between a vision of corporeality as an individual project, and one that considers the body as a cultural object. Finally, we examined a third interpretation (Featherstone 2010) that identifies the 'subject' a possible third interpretation of this phenomenon. The empirical basis of the thesis is based on the use of netnography for analysing a forum (Ciao.it) where the post of consumers of cosmetics and offline through 15 semi-structured interviews were detected. The thesis clarifies the categories of consumption reported by consumers, if there are new categories not identified in the literature and the difference between the online and offline communications experience. In addition, the analysis will outline the processes underlying the construction of corporeality in the experience of consumption and whether the 'subject' is presented as an effective third interpretation of the conflict between the vision of the body as an individual project and the body as a cultural object.

La dimensione del Sacro nei miti contemporanei. Il mito di Renato Zero / Sacred's Dimension in the Contemporary Myths. Renato Zero's Myth

TRAVAGLIATI, MARIANGELA 02 March 2007 (has links)
In the actual society there are different shapes of sacred, and the myth is one of this forms. Myth has more means, and celebrity is a part of this means. Especially, the religion of celebrity is an important social phenomenon, and d our analysis?object is a star: the singer Renato Zero. Around the star there is a fandom, interesting social movement, in which people of fan build sense of belonging and identity. The fan club represents a form of fandom and is a passion community, with her order, space, communication, rite or ceremony, and mythology. The name of Zero?s fandom is sorcini o zerofolli; they are a sort of charismatic aristocracy around own prophet; in fact, the weberian theory of charisma represents a principal interpretation of this fandom (perhaps of fandom generally). Sorcini has worths and a collective conscience: in this case we found our interpretation on Émile Durkheim sociology and, in particular, on theory of rite as celebration on community. Sorcini has a liturgy and sacred in the myth of Renato Zero, in fact, sorcini are different to simple fan, because sorcini mean an identity and sense of group or membership.

I BLOG PERSONALI: PRATICHE D'USO E MODELLAMENTO SOCIALE

LOCATELLI, ELISABETTA 22 May 2008 (has links)
Weblogs developed very rapidly during the last years, by often becoming the symbol of the recognition of the Web as “Web 2.0” in the social discourses. Not only is its diffusion the outcome of a particular technological configuration, but also of a network of economical, social, cultural factors that have changed their shape in the course of time. The goal of this research is to follow the path of this development through the conceptual frame provided by the Social Shaping of Technology applied, in this case, to an object that is both an artefact and a form of Computer Mediated Communication. Firstly, to the purpose, the historical evolution of blog has been reconstructed; then, the trend of the institutional, economical, technological, cultural dimensions has been outlined whereas the author's central role in blog's dynamics emerged. On this basis a field research was carried out and accomplished with a qualitative, multi-sited methodology, in order to highlight the microsocial blog processes of appropriation, in which the main aspects of social shaping has been identified.
