Data visualization in conceptual design: developing a prototype for complex data visualizationYi, Xin January 2017 (has links)
In today's highly competitive industries, engineers are driven to not only design a better product to fulfill users' needs but also demanded to develop a product in a short time to occupy the market. With the development of data collection and visualization technology, the application of data visualization into product development to enhance the ability of better product design is a significant trend. Data visualization becomes more and more important since it could illustrate the valuable information, such as tacit needs and patterns which hidden from data, in a communicated way to help engineers get more inspiration for the conceptual design. It is not hard to collect data; however, the challenge is to visualize the valuable information from a large number of data concisely and intuitively. In recent years, there are some visualization techniques available for product design, while, most of them are implemented in the later stage of product development, few methods are applicable for conceptual design. Therefore, this thesis is carried out to explore appropriate visualization techniques to provide support for conceptual design. The aim of this thesis is, in an engineering environment, to investigate ways to visualize complex data legibly and intuitively to enhance engineers’ ability for conceptual design from better understanding the current machine. In order to achieve the objective, a conceptual design case of the improvement of wheel loader fuel consumption is applied, which consisted of plenty of data sets within various parameters, to explore how to reveal the hidden information of complex data for engineers. As the result of this thesis, a prototype contains a series of visualization techniques is proposed to demonstrate data information from a wheel loader under several visualization situations. The final prototype has the functions of visualizing different operations separately; visualizing the overall fuel consumption in one operation; cluster's patterns visualization; visualizing the impact of one variable on the whole value.

[en] ASPECTS ON VOLUME RENDERING OF SEISMIC DATA / [es] ASPECTOS DE LA VISUALIZACIÓN VOLUMÉTRICA DE DATOS SÍSMICOS / [pt] ASPECTOS DA VISUALIZAÇÃO VOLUMÉTRICA DE DADOS SÍSMICOSANDRE LUIS BARRETO GERHARDT 23 April 2001 (has links)
[pt] A visualização volumétrica direta (volume rendering)
aplicada a dados sísmicos é uma técnica
ainda emergente. Apenas recentemente alguns software
tradicionalmente empregadas.
quantização uniforme é
selecionada pela sua simplicidade e eficiência.
A segmentação dos eventos sísmicos é analisada teoricamente
e verificada
experimentalmente.
sucedida. / [en] Volume rendering is an emerging technique in the field of

software has been made available to the oil industry.
Volume rendering is particulary useful for understanding
structural and stratigrafhic features present in seismic
data in a more natural way than using the tradicional
method of interpreting over a set of 2D slices.
This work adresses several topics related to the nature of
seismic data and to how they interrelate with techniques
commonly used in volume redering.Special attention is given
to three topics: quantization of acquired seismic
amplitudes to 8-bit representations, segmentattion
techiniques to highlight seismic events and use of
illumination models. The quantatization effects are analyzed
by appying different color quantization algorithms adapted
to handle seiosmic amplitudes. Uniform quantization is
selected due to its simplicity and efficiency.
The segmentation of seismic events is studie theorecally
and verified experimentally.Several characteristics of
seismic data that prevent segmentation frombeing successful
are discussed.
The significance of shading obtained by applying common
illumination models is studie theoretically. The estimation
of normal vectors directly from amplitude values is shown
to be inadequate.
Finally, several basic requisites to be fulfilled by
seismic data volume visualization algorithms are
identified.

Visualizing Financial FuturesHeyman, Susanna January 2017 (has links)
Research on financial decision aids, systems designed to help people make financial decisions, is sparse. Previous research has often focused on the theoretical soundness of the advice that the systems provide. The original contribution of this doctoral thesis is a set of empirical studies of how non-expert people understand the advice provided by financial decision aids. Since every piece of advice must be interpreted by a receiver, the accuracy of the advice can be corrupted along the way if the receiver does not understand complicated terminology, probabilistic reasoning, or abstract concepts. The design concept resulting from the studies visualizes a unique combination of short-term and long-term variables that are usually treated as separate and not interacting with each other; loans and amortizations, insurance, retirement saving, and consumption. The aim is to visualize the consequences of different decisions and possible adverse events in terms of their effect on the user’s future consumption, rather than abstract numbers detached from the user’s lived experience. The design concept was tested and evaluated by personal finance experts and professional financial advisors, as well as students and people without financial education, who represented the target users of the system. Results indicate that the system has a learning curve, but that once users understand how to read the graph, they find it more informative than conventional financial planning tools. / <p>QC 20170809</p>

Webová aplikace pro návrh informačních dashboardů / Web Application for Information Dashboard DesignPastushenko, Olena January 2017 (has links)
