This volume contains 55 photographs taken by the Moravian missionary Hermann Moritz Bau in South Africa. Born into an old Herrnhut family in Surinam in 1865, he trained in Germany as a cabinetmaker and missionary. Arriving in Cape Town in 1891, he worked as a teacher and later as a missionary at several mission stations in the Western Cape. The photographs illustrate the life of missionaries and those around them, as well as landscapes of the Cape and the personal perceptions of the photographer.

This volume lists and reproduces 328 photographs connected with the visitation by Carl Ihmels, Director of the Leipzig Mission, to Tanganyika in 1927. About 150 were taken in Tanganyika itself (mainly on the Leipzig Mission stations), a further 130 on the outward and homeward voyages (Southwest Africa, South Africa, Mozambique, Egypt); the remainder were sent to Ihmels later by Leipzig missionaries in Tanganyika. The volume is supplemented by an index and copies of reports on the visitation published in the Evangelisches-Lutherisches Missionsblatt.

This volume lists holdings in the archive of the Northern Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, located in Moshi. The majority of the files deal with the last 40 years; but there is also some material from German mission stations (notably Mamba) not covered in Volume 9 of this series, as well as personnel files of those trained at Machame Theological College in 1933-1934.

This volume is a collection of papers dealing with cultural interaction between Europe and Africa resulting from missionary activity in Africa. The main focus is on the premises and impact of Protestant missionary work, both in Africa and in Europe, but one paper deals with similar processes in Islam.

This volume is the first in this series to cover a Roman Catholic archive. The Benedictine Congregation of St. Ottilien (in Bavaria) has been active in what is now southern Tanzania since 1888.

This volume is a guide to references to East Africa (including photographs) in the main journal of the Leipzig Mission (for previous years see No. 4). The articles, most of which were based on reports written by missionaries in what are now southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, have been indexed in order to facilitate research.

This volume is a guide unpublished written material, ethnographic artefacts, pictures and maps in the archive of the Herrnhut (Moravian) Mission relating to Ghana (1737-68), South Africa (1737-44, 1792-c. 1960) and Tanzania (1891-c. 1970).
