Exploring a delinquent past : women's experiences as adolescents involved in delinquent activities

Kruger, Holly Anne 07 July 2009
Historically, research on adolescent delinquency has focused on statistically determined causal risk factors and has been conducted utilizing male participants (Barron, 2000; Chesney-Lind & Sheldon, 2004). As summarized by Chesney-Lind and Sheldon (2004) delinquency theory has ignored girls and as a result there is considerable question whether existing theories that were developed to explain boys delinquency can explain girls as well (p. 98). Using a basic interpretive qualitative research design (Merriam, 2002b), the studys purpose was to explore and gain a better understanding of the personal experiences of women who were involved in delinquent activities during adolescence. Five women between the ages of 19 and 59 years participated in three interviews. The data collection interview focused on the womens experiences as an adolescent female involved in delinquent activities. The participants descriptions lead to the identification of four descriptive categories: experiences with abuse, experiences with substance use, experiences with challenging and complicated relationships, and experiences that made a positive difference. These four categories of experiential description are discussed in terms of application(s) to counselling practice and future research.

Adolescent Perceptions of Delinquent Behavior Based on Individual Smoking Status: Friends and Peers

Thomsen, Cortney 2012 May 1900 (has links)
Adolescent social influence is a contributing factor to higher rates of delinquent behaviors such as tobacco use, alcohol abuse, illicit drug use, and sexual activity. The objective of this study is to assess how the distinction between the perception of two social groups, peer and friend, influences behavior based on individual smoking status. Data from the 2006 Adolescent Health Risk Behaviors Survey is used for secondary analysis using questions that address individual perception of delinquent behavior based on peer ("people your age") and friends. An independent samples t-test is used to assess the combined friend and peer perception based on lifetime smoking status (non-smokers and smokers). Next, a paired samples t-test using the significant variable of smokers only is used to measure the difference in perception of the social groups, peer vs. friend. The data indicated that there is a perceived difference between social groups behavior based on smoking status with smokers perceiving their peers to be more delinquent than their friends. There is a need for further research to address true prevalence rates in adolescent social groups and education efforts to focus on the dynamic of social interactions that influence delinquent behaviors.

A Quantitative Analysis of Re-offense among Delinquent Foster Care Youth in Georgia

Jones, Brian Keith 01 January 2019 (has links)
Nationwide more than 2 million youth are placed in custody annually, approximately 80,000 children return home, and more than 70% have a diagnosable mental disorder. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the outcomes of 311 youth released from secure residential facilities in Georgia between January 2012 thru May 2017. In the dataset, 136 youth returned to regular homes, 128 returned to group homes (GC), and 47 returned to traditional foster homes (TFC). The goal of the study was to examine the differences in probation outcomes based on the type of placement. For the purpose of the study, probation success was defined as having no additional placements in a secure residential facility within 365 days of release. To provide additional context, mental health status, race, sex, and age were analyzed. Binomial logistic regression and chi-square tests were performed to answer the research question. The tests did not reflect a statistically significant difference in the outcomes. However, the analysis did reflect that race and placement type had some effect on probation success. For race, success was 15.4% for black, 24.0% for white, and 24.1% for other. For placement type, probation success was 15.6% for youth returning to GC, 20.6% for youth returning to regular homes, and 23.4% for youth returning to TFC. As reflected in the literature, issues such as lack of proven programs in the community, mental health, and family impact the outcomes of delinquent youth in foster care. This study and the literature reflect the need for social change which can occur when the needs of delinquent juveniles supervised in foster care are addressed systematically.

Jaunuolių, grįžusių iš įkalinimo įstaigų, resocializacijos ypatumai / Resocialization peculiarities of youth, returned from confinement institutions

Grigaitė, Inga 16 August 2007 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The aim of study „Resocialization peculiarities of youth, returned from confinement institutions“ – to analyze resocialization conception in scientific literature, to research what kind of programs are used for youngsters, returned from confinement institutions, how governmental programs help for adaptation and reintegration to the society of young offenders. The study represents the youth, returned from confinement institutions resocialization research results. 180 respondents have participated in the research: 30 officers from correction inspections (age average – 34,80, SD = 5,80) and 150 youngsters, returned from confinement institutions (age average – 19,72, SD = 1,31). In conclusion we can say that, programs proved by Prison department at the Ministry of Justice of Lithuanian Republic are only educative, not approved for real situation, non-effective. There are no programs for resocialization of youngsters, returned from confinement institutions under 18 years old. The main problem which youngsters meet after returning from confinement institutions is to find job. The officers in helping for youngsters get to „traps“ of law. Sometimes law system doesn‘t help, but block resocialization. For resocialization process of youngsters, returned from confinement institutions very important are social support from family, the officers and community motivation to help for young person, the motivation of youngsters to change themselves and their behavior, the negative influence of... Comparison of Delinquents and Non-Delinquents on a Delinquency Proneness Test

Morgan, Joseph K. 01 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the present study was to develop further a semistructured nonverbal projective test to measure juvenile delinquency proneness. The goal in developing this test was to have a measure which would be free of the many limitations found in existing tests and scales of this nature.
