Leadership and dental aesthetics of adults as perceived by laypersonsMontgomery, E. Britton 18 May 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine if dental aesthetics is perceived by adults to affect an individual’s ability to emerge as a leader. An electronic survey was constructed using facial frontal smiling photographs of 10 patients. Statements were formulated to evaluate four leadership characteristics: intelligence, self-confidence, friendliness, and trustworthiness. Evaluators indicated their level of agreement with each statement for each subject using a 100mm Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Data was obtained from 214 evaluators. Picture ratings were analyzed using repeated-measures mixed-model analyses. Evaluator factors and picture factors were considered when testing for crooked vs. straight teeth differences. There was a significant difference in perception of individuals with straight versus crooked teeth for the characteristics of intelligence, trustworthiness, and self-confidence. No difference found for the characteristic of friendliness. The gender and race of the evaluators influenced the rating of the subjects. Results from this study may support the importance of good smile aesthetics for adults who seek a leadership role.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the color stability of different cement color (transparent, clear, and dark) of light-polymerized resin cement (Choice 2 - Bisco, Rely X Veneer - 3M ESPE) or dual-cured cement (Variolink II Ivoclar- Vivadent , All Cem - FGM). Spectrophotometer (Easyshade - VITA) was used to measure the color of samples (n = 6) immediately after preparation, 7 days, 30 days and 90 days. The mean color difference (ΔE) was higher for transparent colors (ΔE = 4,41), followed by light (ΔE = 3,12) and dark colors (ΔE = 3,25). The mean values of ΔE were lower for the light-polymerized resin cement (Choice 2 ΔE = 2,79; Rely X Veneer ΔE = 3,49) compared to the dual-cured cement (Variolink II ΔE = 3,60; All Cem ΔE = 4,48). An increase in ΔE values was observed with increasing periods of time (7 days ΔE = 2,79; 30 days ΔE = 3,73; 90 days ΔE = 4,25).

Immigrant background and orthodontic treatment need : Quantitative and qualitative studies in Swedish adolescentsJosefsson, Eva January 2010 (has links)
During the last three decades there has been an increased influx of refugees and immigrants into Scandinavia. The overall aim of this thesis was primarily to improve our knowledge of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment need, both normative and self-perceived, in adolescents of varying geographic origin. A further aim was to determine whether any differences with respect to perception of general appearance and psychosocial well-being were related to geographic origin. Papers I and II concerned self perceived and normative orthodontic treatment need. About 500 12-13 year-old subjects, stratified into different groups: A-Sweden, B-Eastern/Southeastern Europe, C-Asia and D-other countries, answered a questionnaire and underwent clinical examination by the author. In paper III the association between the two variables in papers I and II was investigated. Paper IV was a follow up study, at 18-19 years of age, of the relationship between geographic origin and prevalence of malocclusion, self-perceived treatment need, temporomandibular symptoms and psychosocial wellbeing. In Paper V a qualitative study of 19-20 year old subjects was conducted, to identify the strategies they had adopted to handle the issue of persisting poor dental aesthetics. The main findings were that at 12-13 years of age, immigrant subjects had a lower perceived orthodontic treatment need than subjects of Swedish background. Girls of Swedish background had the highest self perceived treatment need, whilst girls of non-Swedish background were most concerned that fixed appliance therapy would be painful. In a few of the clinical variables measured at 12-13 years of age, the Swedish group exhibited the greatest space deficiency and irregularity in both the maxillary and mandibular anterior segments and greater overjet, compared to the Eastern/Southeastern European and Asian groups. The clinical implications were negligible. The orthodontic treatment need according to “Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need - Dental HealthComponent” (IOTN-DHC) grades 4 and 5, ranged from 30 to 40 percent, without any inter-group differences. There were strong associations between subjects perceiving a need for orthodontic treatment and 6IOTN-DHC grades 4 and 5, anterior crossbite and avoiding smiling because they were self-conscious about their teeth. At the age of 18-19 years, the frequency of malocclusion was similar in all groups. Subjects of Asian origin had a higher self-perceived orthodontic treatment need than their Swedish counterparts and a higher frequency of headache than those of Eastern/Southeastern European origin. Psychological wellbeing was reduced in nearly one quarter of the sample, more frequently in girls than boys. No association was found between self-perceived orthodontic treatment need and psychological wellbeing. The theory “Being under the pressure of social norms” was generated in Paper V, and it can be applied to improve our understanding of young adults who have adjusted to living with poor dental aesthetics and also aid to identify those who are not as well-adjusted and would probably benefit from treatment. Undisclosed dental fear is an important barrier to acceptance of orthodontic treatment in early adolescence. Despite demographic changes due to immigration, no major change in the prevalence of malocclusion and normative orthodontic treatment need has been disclosed. This does not apply to adolescents and adults who immigrated at an older age.

January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate changes in tissues around dental implants inserted in different levels in relation to crestal bone (BC) under early and delayed loading conditions. Thirty implants were inserted in five mongrel dogs were used in this study, from which, the lower premolars were removed, and 90 days after, in one side, three dental implants were inserted (Delayed subgroup, implants installed 120 days before loading) in three different levels in relation to crestal bone (Bone Level, Minus1 and Minus2 groups), and three implants were inserted on remain ridge (Early subgroup, implants were loaded 48 hours after installed). The metallic prostheses were installed in both sides and preserved for 45 days. The clinical and radiographic analyses were performed. Data was submitted to statistics, under a 5% level of significance. The load conditions did not interfered on the position of marginal soft tissues (PTM), those changes evaluated because of the insert level of the implant-abutment junction (JIC) in to BC. The BC resorption was similar in all types of insertion levels of the implants. The present finds suggest caution on insertion of the implant in an apical position level in relation to BC. / Orientador: Elcio Marcantonio / Coorientador: Elcio Marcantonio Junior / Banca: Walter Martins Junior / Banca: Luis Antonio Borelli Barros / Mestre

Previous issue date: 2007-04-30 / As patient-centered approaches become more popular, increasing attention is given to the effects of various health situations in oral health-related quality of life (OHRQL) and body satisfaction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between several aspects related to dental esthetics and body satisfaction, self-evaluation concerning to esthetics, and oral-health related quality of life (OHRQL). This work had a cross-sectional design and its sample comprised subjects aged 13-20 years-old (n = 301; mean age = 16.12; SD = 1.75). The sample was of convenience type, comprising high-school students of a public school from Goiânia. Conditions related to dental esthetics were assessed through a clinical exam following the criteria established by World Health Organization. Self-perception variables were evaluated through the instruments Body Satisfaction Scale (BSS), short-form of Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ), as well as esthetic self-evaluation and will of change. Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression were used to evaluate the association of variables. There was a low prevalence of dental alterations in the sample assessed. In general, there was a low impact of dental characteristics on OHRQL measures, what may influence on the decision-making process regarding to dental treatment needs.
