Characterising the relationship between practice and laboratory-based studies of designers for critical design situations

Cash, Philip January 2012 (has links)
Experimental study of the designer plays a critical role in design research. However laboratory based study is often poorly compared and contrasted to practice, leading to a lack of uptake and subsequent research impact. The importance of addressing this issue is highlighted by its significant influence on design research and many related fields. As such the main aim of this work is to improve empirical design research by characterising the relationship between practice and laboratory-based studies for critical design situations. A review of the state of the art methods in design research and key related fields is reported. This highlights the importance and commonality of a set or core issues connected to the failure to effectively link study of practice and study in the laboratory. Further to this a technical review and scoping was carried out to establish the most efective capture strategy to be used when studying the designer empirically. Subsequently three studies are reported, forming a three point comparison between practice the laboratory (with student practitioners) and an intermediary case (a laboratory with practitioners) . Results from these studies contextualise the critical situations in practice and develop a detailed multi-level comparison between practice and the laboratory which was then validated with respect to a number of existing studies. The primary contribution of this thesis is the development of a detailed multi-level relationship between practice and the laboratory for critical design situations: information seeking, ideation and design review. The second key contribution is the development of a generic method for the empirical study of designers in varying contexts - allowing researchers to build on this work and more effectively link diverse studies together. The final key contribution of this work is the identification of a number of core methodological issues and mitigating techniques affecting both design research and its related fields.

Graphically Driven Interactive Stress Reanalysis for Machine Elements in the Early Design Stage

Terdalkar, Sachin Sharad 18 August 2003 (has links)
"In this work a new graphically driven interactive stress reanalysis finite element technique has been developed so that an engineer can easily carry out manual geometric changes in a machine element during the early design stage. The interface allow an engineer to model a machine element in the commercial finite element code ANSYS® and then modify part geometry graphically to see instantaneous graphical changes in the stress and displacement contour plots. A reanalysis technique is used to enhance the computational performance for solving the modified problem; with the aim of obtaining results of acceptable accuracy in as short a period of time in order to emphasize the interactive nature of the design process. Three case studies are considered to demonstrate the effectiveness of the prototype graphically driven reanalysis finite element technique. The finite element type considered is a plane stress four-node quadrilateral based on a homogenous, isotropic, linear elastic material. The first two problems consider a plate with hole and plate with fillets. These two examples demonstrate that by changing the hole and fillet size/shape, an engineer can manually obtain an optimum design based on the stress concentration factor, i.e. engineer-driven optimization process. Each case study considered multiple redesigns. A combined approximation reanalysis method is used to solve each redesigned problem. The third case study considers a support bracket. The goal is to design the cantilever portion of the bracket to have uniform strength and to minimize the stress concentration at the fillet. The major beneficiaries of the work will be engineers working in product development and validation of components and structures, which are subjected to mechanical loads. The scientific and technological relevance of this work applies not only to the early stage of design, but to a number of other applications areas in which benefits may accrue. A company may have needs for a rapid analysis and re-analysis tool for fatigue assessment of components manufactured slightly out of tolerance. Typically this needs to be carried out under a very restrictive time scale."

Facing the demand for sustainable development, the architectural design process has suffered extensive transformations. Based on a hierarchical and sequential decision-making model, the usual working methods developed by the construction industry has proved to be inadequate. Emerges, then, the need for an integrated design that, in principle, gathers the conditions for coping with the complexity of the context in which produces contemporary architecture, as well as that inherent complexity of the design process. Still, judging from the complexity and sophistication of the architectural design process, there’s no way to ensure, in case of creative process, that an efficient process is equivalent to a better project. In this way, this work has the objective, through a questionnaire destined to the architects selected in function to the relevance of the work developed in the sustainable project area, to establish the relation between integrated project and the design process in architecture. Through the analysis of the collected data, it was possible to observe that, according to the architects' perception, the multidisciplinary and collaborative work, the performance evaluation and the process management were the aspects that most influenced the design process.

The advent of new technologies has raised questions about how new businesses are developed. Demanding consumers and global market access are some of the transformations of contemporary business that make traditional plans and projects unable to keep up with these changes. If, on the one hand, society shows a markedly accelerated development in several fields, on the other, organizations, which are supposed to thrive in the midst of this social scene, do not satisfactorily follow these transformations. Issues such as business models, innovation and strategy become emerging for both management and design disciplines. And, therefore, new interpretations and views are necessary for the construction of business models. Under this prerogative, design is able to collaborate with this process of building new business models. Much by his way of acting, which is related to a greater propensity of taking risks, as well as by his multidisciplinary approach, both for problems, as for projects. Regarding the way designers act, this research will put a lens in the prototype perspective, as an element capable of revealing new knowledge on a thematics. The work used the prototyping procedure with center point, since the design is distinguished by the way it operates. Therefore, the objective of this research was to explore the role of prototyping in business modeling. Thus, in order to make the study viable, a workshop was developed with management and design specialists, with the challenge that the participants build a business model from the available materials. From the proposed workshop two focus groups were held, one with managers and the other with designers, in addition to the recording of the two working groups that enabled a discussion on the role of physical materials, as well as the advancement in sophistication and a better understanding of the possibilities of the practices of design. The results obtained suggest that, although the professionals see different advantages, both glimpse the productive activity in the construction of business models. For managers, this activity has greater potential associated with an idea of finalization of what is being produced, with the potential to reveal new ideas and sophistication of the model. Yet, the designers understand that this activity is part of the nature of designing and collaborate at different moments. Being a great option for people with different skills to understand from the handling of materials for a more plural and rich communication. It also has the potential for a creative process, so that ideas can be realized through the use of three-dimensionality, providing discussions that would not be accessed if the representation of the idea were from another visual resource.

Brandi, Leonardo Barili January 2016 (has links)
The process of concept selection one of the activities of Product Development Process (PDP), which aims ro evaluate the solutions of a design problem, ro se lect the most consistem alternatives to the requirements of a project. Given the complexity of this task, there are systematized techniques to assist this decision-making, which are formalized and provide visualization, arder and logic in the process. However, there was a disi nterest of designers in the use of such, dueto lack of intimacy with them, difficul ties in applying and belief in a non-formal process for rhis evaluation.ln rurn, the techniques are applied rhrough tools, and these have rhe ability to be configured to apply one or more techniques in orher ways. The research problem that emerges from this question is: how to incorporare systematic techniques of concept selection in the Product Development Process in arder to stimulare and facilitare the use of these techniques? Based on a hypothesis that a ludic tool could solve this, the main goal of this work is to develop a game as a project tool for the application of systematic techniques of concept selecrion for producr design teams. An approach to create a virtual network for co-design process>

Ali, Haider January 2011 (has links)
With the increasing popularity of information technologies, many companies try to set up a virtual network in order to share their business information. The purpose of creating such a virtual network is to create a new knowledge base on the combination of the existing knowledge. Collaboration is very necessary in such a virtual network as crass-unit collaboration takes place when people from different units work together in cross-unit teams on a common task or provide significant help to each other. Recently, co-design is an emerging technology in the field of informatics. It is considered as the development of system thinking, and it is a collaborative designing process which recruits designers, researchers, stakeholders and others together. The purpose of this collaborative activity is to sole designing problems. Therefore, if we want to increase collaboration in a co-design process, we need to look at a ways of increasing the efficiency of collaboration. The rapid development of accessible, reliable, and user-friendly information technology offers improvements to traditional collaboration, and makes new approaches possible. Many platforms for the exchange of information such as the Internet, email, and video-conferencing are well established aids to collaborative activities. Therefore, my research investigates to create an efficient virtual network for a co-design process. In this research, I will try to investigate that what is the need of a virtual network for co-design process and what are those virtual network soft-wares which can help us in a co-design process. My research discussion is related to the theory of CSCW (Computer Supported cooperative work). / Program: Magisterutbildning i informatik

Aplication of DSM - Design Struture Matrix to the planning process of building design.

Gualberto, Ana Cristina Ferrari 11 May 2012 (has links)
This study presents an analysis of application of DSM Design Structure Matrix to the planning process of building design. The main objective this study is the analysis of manuals Scope of Projects and Services for the Real State Industry in terms of planning the design process, using the DSM. For development of the study was first done a literature review, where we selected the ADEPT methodology to development planning this process. When we applied the first two stages of ADEPT methodology process definition and optimization of the process, which provided material for an analysis of the implementation of DSM planning in the design process and a critical analysis of the Manuals Scope of Projects and Services for Real State Industry. Compliance with the first two stages of ADEPT methodology provided material with information that allowed the observation of some inconsistencies and allowed the presentation of comments and suggestions for changes in content, as proposed improvements to the tool guide that they purport to be. Finally, from the validation of the DSM as a tool for development planning and design process based on the suggested changes to the manuals, we proposed a new model of the design process.

An investigation into the application of design processes to novel self-use molecular diagnostic devices for sexually transmitted infections

Stead, Thomas January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to investigate the application of design processes to the development of novel self-use molecular diagnostic devices for sexually transmitted infections. The argument proposed in this thesis is that the application of design methods at the earliest research stages into miniaturised, low cost, molecular diagnostic technologies will accelerate and improve the process of translating proof of concept diagnostic technologies into usable devices. Concept development requirements and potential issues and barriers to development were identified through interviews with expert stakeholders. These requirements were further refined through a survey of a multidisciplinary diagnostic medical device research group. An action research method was applied to develop a proof of concept prototype to the preclinical trial stage. Through these research studies, a design process model was formulated for use in a research environment. The application of design methods to the proof of concept prototype described in the thesis have resulted in a preclinical trial prototype that exhibits the necessary features for development into a self-use molecular diagnostic device. Issues and barriers were identified and discussed, design guidelines for further development beyond preclinical trial were defined and a generalised design process model for self-use molecular diagnostic devices for sexually transmitted infections was proposed. This research highlights the need for design methods to be applied at the earliest possible stages of the development of novel molecular diagnostic devices.

Building design firm magement model implementation.

Flávia Rodrigues de Souza 13 May 2009 (has links)
As the Brazilian Civil Construction sector has historically been characterized by periods of oscillation productive demand, the flexibility proposed by the management prepare is essential to the companies of the sector, viewing endurable and sustainable acting. In this context, civil construction micro companies are usually the most sensitive to the low productive demand periods, specially the design firms, since most of them are unprepared and, in addition, they are not strategically organized and structured to take preventive actions in their market. Due to this scenario, Oliveira (2005) proposed a design building firms management model which contains instructions to manage their essential processes and functions. Aiming to implement the above model, two successive work groups were formed, composed by design firms working for the São Paulo civil construction market . This work was named Design Firms Management Developing Program and it viewed, through action research, to facilitate the management model implementation in the design firms through dynamic activities aimed at sustained development by their own potentialities and knowledge limitation, conducting them to a business maturity and consequently to organize them to act in recession periods and also in high productive demand periods. In this context, this research was developed aiming to analyze the design firms reaction along the program and the results attained due to the management model implementation. Through the bibliographic review, this research views to propose recommendations to applicate the model management and its concepts.

ProposiÃÃo de um modelo de retroalimentaÃÃo da gestÃo do processo de projeto a partir de mediÃÃes de satisfaÃÃo de clientes / Proposition of a model of feedback in the design process management from measurements of customer satisfaction

Juliana Carvalho Schlachter Sampaio 00 December 2010 (has links)
In research related to customer satisfaction, it has been observed that the collected data have not been systematically used in the feedback of the design process, despite the literature recommendations on the importance of incorporating these data. Moreover, especially when generating value for customers, the process of design affects the decisions taken at this stage impact continuously. Some research, seeking to manage customer needs, has assessed the use of decision making tools from the manufacturing industry to support the design process (eg,AHP, AD, TRIZ and QFD). Therefore, this exploratory research aims to propose a theoretical model through the integration of these tools, to assist both the feedback in the design process and value generation. Three methodological steps were conducted: analysis of the tolls used in the design process, adaptation of the tools for the construction requirements, and evaluation of the proposed theoretical model, which was obtained from literature research. A first version of the model was applied in a field research. Through four sources of evidence (pre-test, document research, focus groups and analysis of the model), the proposed model was refined and evaluated by designers through practical application in a supposedly real situation in the context of social interest housing promoted by the Brazilian Federal Government (PAR/CEF). It was concluded that the model can generate more value for the residents of this type of social interest housing; however, the applicability of the model in other contexts should be verified. The designers also found that the model shows the parameter of quality, but does not highlight the aspects related to cost. Finally, since some of the needs were not analyzed from the architectural point of view, the designers highlighted the importance of choosing the right prioritization criteria. In this sense, some of these assessments were incorporated into the third and final version of the model, while others are suggested as future work
