_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / In the Federal District, urban employment increased also forming one of the largest urban agglomerations in the country, and its current reality reveals the same problems observed in other Brazilian cities. The ailments related to urban expansion can be easily visualized in all administrative regions, formerly satellite towns of the Federal District. The main focus of this work focuses on an analysis of the impact generated in Planaltina RA VI Administrative Region of the construction and deployment of Brasilia process. This region has gone through all stages of occupation of the territory in question and had great importance before and during the construction of Brasilia. The research started from the choice of topic, definition of the study area, survey and conceptual elaboration of the theoretical framework through bibliographical research. Documents, images and memorials provided by the Public Archives of the Federal District and finally were also analyzed field studies were conducted. The information and analyzes indicate that the peculiar process of deployment of Brasilia produced in the region historically compromised urban framework, and those who inhabited the region at the time the construction of Brasília was polysemic.

Military expenditure and economic development : the case of Greece, 1952-1987

Kollias, C. January 1989 (has links)
Throughout the post-war period, Greece has allocated between five and six per cent of her annual Gross Domestic Product to defence. On many occasions she had the highest defence burden in NATO and Europe. There is evidence that the level, form and content of this defence expenditure have been determined by a combination of both external and internal factors. Greek military spending needs to be understood in relation to external security concerns and in particular in terms of her relations with Turkey. Membership of NATO, U.S. foreign policies and internal security factors have also influenced military expenditure. There is no substantial evidence to suggest that military expenditure has so far been used as a tool of economic policy. Dependency on imported weapons systems will not be substantially reduced by domestic arms production. It will merely be replaced by another form of dependency. Neither will domestic arms production generate appreciable backward and forward linkages which could pull the country out of the present economic crisis. The peculiarities of Greek development have created long term dependency on imported technology and capital goods which will not be reduced by arms production. Foreign military transfers have been instrumental in forging these dependency links and keeping the country open to foreign capital to operate under free and unregulated conditions. The links between military expenditure and economic growth are first established at the growth model level. They are then estimated in the context of a growth model directly and indirectly through the effect on savings and investment. The growth rate is treated as a function of both exogenous and endogenous variables and the impact of defence spending is estimated by two stage least squares in a series of equations. The results indicate that military expenditure has adversely affected growth in the period 1953-84 mainly through the crowing out of investment.

Athenian ideology in Demosthenes' deliberative oratory : hailing the dēmos

Bremner, Sarah Janet Alexandrina January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines Demosthenes’ rhetorical use of Athenian ideology in his deliberative speeches from 351-341 BCE. I argue that during this period of crisis, which is usually narrated in terms of conflict with Macedonia, Demosthenes confronts an internal crisis within the Assembly. While Demosthenes’ deliberative speeches have traditionally been defined as ‘Philippic’, this thesis argues that the speeches do not prioritise an ‘Anti- Macedonian’ agenda, but rather focus on confronting the corruption of the deliberative decision-making process. Due to an attitude of apathy and neglect, Demosthenes’ rhetoric suggests that their external problems are a direct product of this internal crisis, both of which are perpetuated by their failure to recognise how self-sabotaging practices undermine the polis from within. As he asserts in On the Chersonese and the Third Philippic, they cannot hope to deal with their external situation before they deal with their internal crisis. To address this, I argue that Demosthenes’ parrhēsia interweaves criticism of the dēmos with the praise of Athens, using social memory and past exempla both to recall and prescribe didactically the attitudes central to Athenian identity. As such, I propose that the deliberative speeches do not confront a ‘Macedonian Question’, but a fundamentally Athenian one.

Metics and identity in democratic Athens

Kears, Matthew John January 2014 (has links)
This thesis investigates the metics, or resident aliens, in democratic Athens and how they affected ideas of identity, with a particular focus on the fourth century BC. It looks at definitions of the metics and how the restrictions and obligations which marked their status operated; how these affected their lives and their image, in their own eyes and those of the Athenians; how the Athenians erected and maintained a boundary of status and identity between themselves and the metics, in theory and in practice; and how individuals who crossed this boundary could present themselves and be characterised, especially in the public context of the lawcourts. The argument is that the metics served as a contradiction of and challenge to Athenian ideas about who they were and what made them different from others. This challenge was met with responses which demonstrate the flexibility of identity in Athens, and its capacity for variety, reinvention and contradiction.

Agricultura e saúde : uma abordagem sobre o perfil de saúde do agricultor da zona rural de Brazlândia

Jonas, Marcela Fonseca 28 April 2015 (has links)
The use of pesticides has increased significantly in Brazil over the past decade , growing twice as fast as the rest of the world and taking over for most consumers since 2008. The Brazilian Association of Chemical Industry highlighted an increase of 10.3 % in pesticide sales in Brazil in 2013. the use of agricultural compounds promoted the modernization of the countryside known as the Green Revolution , which legitimizes Brazil as one of the largest agro-exporting countries. One of the great challenges of this reality is to reduce the effects of pesticides on the health of farmers in particular and the general population. Objective: To understand the perception of family farmer from rural Chapadinha on the relationship between the handling of pesticides and health. Methodology: qualitative and quantitative research, developed in the Rural Area of Brazlândia - Chapadinha the region. The sample , from the perspective of qualitative for 10 respondents and quantitative for 66 blood samples of workers in the region . The data collection instrument included objective and subjective questions related to the topic of study. For the qualitative data processing we used the content analysis technique in thematic modality. It was also conducted study of toxicology tests to determine the butyrylcholinesterase ( BChE ) in workers . The results of bloods samples were tabulated in Software Excel 2007. The study was submitted to and approved by the Ethics Committee on Human Research of the Health Sciences Faculty of UNB. Results: The content analysis of the interviews allowed the drafting of core meanings: 1) "The rural worker and contact with pesticides"; 2) "Health farmer". To enable further discussion of these cores through the content analysis technique in the Thematic mode, this four categories emerged, two from each core thus allowing better targeting of the study, they are: "The perceptions of farmers on exposure to pesticides "; "Individual and collective Care adopted by the workers"; "Received support and the perception of farmers on health"; "Signs and symptoms reported by workers." Conclusion: It was noticed among farmers in Chapadinha the need for more awareness of the proper handling of pesticides in crops, being necessary to develop more assertive action to prevent possible contamination and poisoning. More intense discussions on the proper use of PPE still it is necessary, given that much of this workers have own signs and symptoms of contamination by pesticides.

Aspects of inequality and poverty in Greece, 1974, 1982

Tsakloglou, Panagiotis January 1989 (has links)
This study attempts to document the state and nature of inequality and poverty in Greece using the primary consumption expenditure data of two Household Expenditure Surveys conducted in 1974 and 1982. Chapter 1 provides an outline of recent developments in the Greek economy, a survey of the literature on inequality and poverty in Greece and a comparison of the above data with data from other sources. In Chapter 2 it is argued that the distribution of consumption expenditure per equivalent adult is a fairly good approximation to the (unobservable) distribution of economic welfare, and three models of equivalence scales for the cost of children are estimated. Based on these results, the distributions of consumption expenditure per equivalent adult are constructed for both survey years. Chapter 3 provides the results of measurement and decomposition of inequality. One-way decomposition is carried out when the population is grouped according to ten factors, of which five are used to subdivide the population into small homogeneous socioeconomic groups for the purposes of the multivariate decomposition of inequality. The main finding of the one-way decompositions is that disparities "between groups" play a far less important role in determining aggregate inequality than disparities "within-groups". Even in the multivariate decomposition, variations "between-groups" account for only one third of aggregate inequality in 1974 and for even less in 1982. The results of measuremenat nd decompositiono f poverty, reportedi n Chapter4 , suggest that poverty is closely associated with certain occupational characteristics of the household head. These characteristics are employment in the agricultural sector or no employment. Households headed by farmers and retired persons account for around two thirds of aggregate poverty in both survey years. Intertemporal changesi n inequality and poverty are examined in Chapter5 . It is demonstrated that inequality and relative poverty declined substantially between 1974 and 1982, while the decline in absolute poverty was spectacular. The impact on inequality of changes in the structure of the population was negligible, but the improvement in the educational level of HH heads had a strong negative effect on poverty. Further, the results of some cross-country inequality and welfare comparisons presented in this chapter show that inequality is higher, and welfare lower, in Greece than in most of the other EEC countries. Finally, Chapter 6 summarizes the principal findings and discusses briefly their policy implications

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This master thesis started from the idea that the landscape’s models currently adopted on the shore of the Lake Paranoa aren’t contributing properly for the maintenance of the native ecosystems. In this context, the restoration of green corridors, allocated in strategic positions by the connection of environmental preservation areas, could act as feasible strategy in the conservation of biodiversity, as it decreases the negative effects of habitats’ fragmentation. It was described how ecology, in the quality of a new paradigm, would influence the projetual practices, resulting in actions that respect the environment. It was also presented some landscape’s projects, in Brazil and abroad, which has the environmental conservation as one of its major concerns. The environmental degradation of the watersheds maybe is the bigger example of how the urban expansion has affected and degraded the natural processes in the Federal District. By this point of view, it is very important the study of the shore of Lake Paranoa, of its strategies of conservation and its referred laws. It was done an analysis of the occupation of the shore of the lake along several decades and the plans and propositions of the process of implementation of “Projeto Orla”. For the landscape analysis of the shore, it was chosen the shore of Lago Sul, using a methodology inspired in well-known landscapes’ techniques. As a conclusion, it is believed that the current occupations on the shore damage the maintenance of native ecosystems, demanding modifications and high investments that will result in great wins for the society and the environment. It was also verified that it is possible the implementation of green corridors in the shores of Lago Sul, using the connection of reminiscent areas of native vegetation of “cerrado” and the utilization of a landscape more concerned with the environment.

Surplus citizens : struggles in the Greek crisis, 2010-2014

Kotouza, Dimitra January 2015 (has links)
This thesis analyses the social struggles that occurred between 2010 and 2014 during the crisis in Greece: labour struggles, the movement of the squares, demonstrations and riots, neighbourhood assemblies, solidarity projects and economies, local environmental struggles, and anti-fascist and migrants' struggles. It discusses their internal and external limits in the historical specificity of the contemporary crisis and class relation. Drawing critically on Théorie Communiste's periodising schema, these struggles are framed, first, through a shift in the dynamic of the class relation effected by the crisis and the restructuring, which is a continuation of the first phase of 'neoliberal' restructuring in the 1990s. This shift intensified a central capitalist contradiction: while the capital relation imposes most violently the absolute dependence of subsistence on the wage, the wage relation fails to guarantee subsistence and integrates proletarians as surplus to capitalist reproduction. Second, the struggles are framed through the deep political crisis of state sovereignty and the relation between state and civil society, caused by the relentless imposition of the restructuring in conjunction with supranational institutions. These historical transformations are traced through the mutual constitution of international tendencies and the development of class struggle in Greece, against theories of dependency and underdevelopment. Ideological responses to the financial crisis and the logic of the restructuring are interrogated by employing theories of value, fetishism, and the state influenced by the German 'value-form' debate. Foucault-influenced conceptions of governmentality and sovereignty are also deployed to examine the restructuring's forms of imposition and the biopolitical crisis-management strategies of the state, which reinforced the racialised and gendered constitution of civil society. The thesis argues that these two elements, the changing dynamic of the class relation and the crisis of the state and civil society, defined the struggles of this period, in which two core characteristics can be identified. First, labour struggles confronted the dilemma between the necessity and inadequacy of the wage through an ambivalence between their attachment to work and their estrangement from it. This ambivalence did not question the terms of the dilemma posed, which were only questioned fleetingly in riots that interrupted the normality of commodity exchange. Second, the deep political crisis provoked struggles defending democracy, with the disempowered 'Greek citizen' as their central subject, which constitutively excluded migrants. The splitting of these struggles between leftwing anti-imperialist and rightwing anti-immigration nationalism, and into a struggle between fascism and anti-fascism, were not able to challenge this constitutive exclusion, which was only questioned by migrants' own struggles. Nationalism and the drive to reinforce unsettled social hierarchies played into the governmental effort to contain the political crisis, through the state's biopolitical management of the migrant and marginal, racialised and gendered surplus populations produced in the crisis.

Cult in context : the ritual significance of miniature pottery in Ancient Greek sanctuaries from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period

Barfoed, Signe January 2016 (has links)
Several previously overlooked questions related to ancient Greek dedicatory practices are investigated in this thesis. The main questions addressed are: how do the contexts of Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic votive miniature vessels inform us about the Greek cults in which they are used, and the transmission of such cults? What role did miniaturisation play in the sanctuaries and the rituals in ancient Greek society, and why miniaturisation? A number of supplementary questions accompany the main questions, for example, what did miniaturisation mean in the context of votive dedications in sanctuaries? This thesis aims to demonstrate that earlier explanations arguing that miniatures are simply and profoundly cheap substitutes for more expensive objects do not work well, since many of these small objects are carefully made and some are elaborately decorated, and would thus not have been cheaper, or less time consuming to produce compared to full sized objects. The chronological time frame of the thesis is limited to the Archaic to the Hellenistic period, and its core is three case studies with different themes and different geographical locations in focus (Kalydon, Olympia, Kombothekra, various sites in South Italy, and other sites for comparison). The thesis addresses also issues relating to, for instance, miniaturisation, imitation and models, the functionality, and non- functionality of small votive objects, agency, trade, and colonization. The study of ancient Greek dedicatory practices within the scholarship of Classical Studies tends to concentrate on votive statues, religious architecture, inscribed metal dedications, and stelai. Little attention has been paid to less extravagant dedications even though these groups of material have been found in abundant amounts in sanctuaries throughout Greece. Moreover, in those cases where this material has been published interpretation and thoroughly analyses are often lacking. As a result, this study makes important contributions to two large questions within Classical studies: how did the Greeks view their gods and how did the Greeks interact with the gods. Miniature pottery contributes to our understanding of ancient Greek ritual practice as well of specific rituals. The work presented in this thesis accentuates that miniature pottery’s material meaning and symbolic importance can no longer be dismissed.
