Cholinergic and Non-Cholinergic Septo-Hippocampal Projections: A Double-Label Horseradish Peroxidase-Acetylcholinesterase Study in the Rabbit

Baisden, Ronald H., Woodruff, Michael L., Hoover, Donald B. 02 January 1984 (has links)
The existence of a massive cholinergic projection from cells in the medical septal nucleus (MS) and nucleus of the diagonal band (DB) to the hippocampal formation has been recognized for some time. However, the actual percentages of cholinergic and non-cholinergic neurons in the MS and DB which project to the hippocampus have not been reported. A procedure which combines horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) histochemistry in the same tissue was used to determine these percentages in the rabbit. Less than 50% of the neurons in the MS and DB which were labeled with reaction product following an HRP injection into the dorsal hippocampus also stained for AChE. Moreover, 70% of all neurons containing HRP reaction product were located in the DB, but neurons in the DB could not be differentiated from those in the MS on the basis of size or morphology. These data are taken to indicate that much of the MS-DB hippocampal projection is not cholinergic. Substance P is suggested as another possible transmitter within this anatomical system.

Diagonal And Horizontal Stiffeners For Shear Transfer In Rigid Frame Square Knees

Heard, William Franklin 09 December 2006 (has links)
The research addresses the effect of diagonal and horizontal stiffeners on shear transfer in rigid frame square knees. Rigid frame square knees are an integral component of pre-manufactured metal building systems. This paper examined a more efficient design of the rigid frame square knee. Five full-scale laboratory tests on square knee joints were performed to verify the effects of a diagonal stiffener on shear transfer. Two frames were fabricated without diagonal stiffeners, and three frames were fabricated with 1/8- inch- thick diagonal stiffeners, not extending the full diagonal length of the knee web. Experimental results, coupled with a finite element analysis, are compared to AISC provisions in Section F4: shear yielding and shear buckling, and in Section G3: tension field action. This research shows that if diagonal stiffeners are needed, then thin, shortened diagonal stiffeners are sufficient to restrain shear buckling of the knee web until shear yielding occurs.

Robust Implementations of the Multistage Wiener Filter

Hiemstra, John David 11 April 2003 (has links)
The research in this dissertation addresses reduced rank adaptive signal processing, with specific emphasis on the multistage Wiener filter (MWF). The MWF is a generalization of the classical Wiener filter that performs a stage-by-stage decomposition based on orthogonal projections. Truncation of this decomposition produces a reduced rank filter with many benefits, for example, improved performance. This dissertation extends knowledge of the MWF in four areas. The first area is rank and sample support compression. This dissertation examines, under a wide variety of conditions, the size of the adaptive subspace required by the MWF (i.e., the rank) as well as the required number of training samples. Comparisons are made with other algorithms such as the eigenvector-based principal components algorithm. The second area investigated in this dissertation concerns "soft stops", i.e., the insertion of diagonal loading into the MWF. Several methods for inserting loading into the MWF are described, as well as methods for choosing the amount of loading. The next area investigated is MWF rank selection. The MWF will outperform the classical Wiener filter when the rank is properly chosen. This dissertation presents six approaches for selecting MWF rank. The algorithms are compared to one another and an overall design space taxonomy is presented. Finally, as digital modelling capabilities become more sophisticated there is emerging interest in augmenting adaptive processing algorithms to incorporate prior knowledge. This dissertation presents two methods for augmenting the MWF, one based on linear constraints and a second based on non-zero weight vector initialization. Both approaches are evaluated under ideal and perturbed conditions. Together the research described in this dissertation increases the utility and robustness of the multistage Wiener filter. The analysis is presented in the context of adaptive array processing, both spatial array processing and space-time adaptive processing for airborne radar. The results, however, are applicable across the entire spectrum of adaptive signal processing applications. / Ph. D.

The influence of beam depth and longitudinal reinforcement ratio in beams was evaluated and results compared with similar beams cast with conventional concrete beams. Cracking, deformations in compression strut, vertical displacements, reinforcement deformation and load failure and failure mode were evaluated. Sixteen 1000 mm long beams with a 150 mm cross sectional width were tested. Eight beams were cast with self compacting concrete and eight with conventional concrete. Both were designed for a concrete fck = 25 MPa. The longitudinal reinforcement of each beam was design to ensure shear failure. Each group consisted of eight beams with four beams had a longitudinal reinforcement ratio of 1.3% and beam depths of 20 cm, 25 cm, 30 cm and 35 cm in height, and the other four beams had longitudinal reinforcement ratio of 2,3% with the same beam depths. The beams were instrumented with seven LVDT's, five of which were positioned to read vertical displacements and the other two were glued on the side of the beam for measuring crack width and displacements in the compression strut. Four strain gages used in the beam’s longitudinal and transverse reinforcement. The beams were tested to failure with a concentrated load at midspan. The results showed that all the beams failed by crushing of the concrete compression zone above the shear crack. Overall, conventional concrete beams ultimate loads were between 9% and 18% greater than those obtained with the self compacting concrete beams, and the difference was slightly higher in the beams with 1.3% of longitudinal reinforcement ratio. This increased resistance of conventional concrete beams was due to greater aggregate interlock which occurs due to the greater number and larger maximum aggregate size in conventional concrete. Interlock mechanism was also responsible for the largest width of diagonal cracks in conventional concrete beams, on average 21% higher than in self compacting concrete beams, and the ratio between higher ultimate load and load at the first diagonal crack, on average 28% higher. The largest diagonal crack width led the transverse reinforcement of the conventional concrete beams to deform, on average, 64% more than the self compacting concrete beams. All three standards considered (NBR 6118:2007, Eurocode and ACI 318:2011 2:2003) were conservative and underestimated the ultimate shear load, mainly by the fact that in none of them take into account the arching action, which occurs in beams with ratio a/d < 2.5. The average ultimate loads of the beams were 73.1% higher than those calculated by the standards.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Arquivo Total.pdf: 3728715 bytes, checksum: e1d7a2bbae94938f6e4f35edc91c9a5d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-16 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The open biomes of Brazil, including Cerrado and Caatinga, are characterized by the intense seasonality and low pluviometric indices. The survival in such conditions depends upon ecological adaptations. Even so, we lack of information on the required resources for the maintenance of the species in that ambient. Psittaciformes is one of the most threatened groups among birds, either by habitat loss, or harvesting for wildlife traffic. Additionally, there is an ongoing debate on the proper destination for the animals seized from traffic, and we currently lack of data on the success of reinserting these birds back in the wild, or on the associated impacts into the wild. For the purpose of evaluating comparatively, in terms of feeding, the adaptive strategies of the Psittacidae in Brazilian open diagonal and evaluating reinserting birds seized from traffic, we colected and compiled data of six natural populations of one Cerrado’s Psittacidae (Brotogeris chiriri) and three natural populations and one group released on the Caatinga (Eupsittula cactorum). The natural populations of both species are frugivorous and seed predators. Both show variations on the diet composition with up to 50% of exclusive species between dry and rainy seasons, including exotic and cultivated on theirs diet and they do not realize migratory movements. The Caatinga species, Eupsittula cactorum, explores a higher number of species, has a higher number of plant-animal interactions and feeds on a wider strata when compared to the on of Cerrado (Brotogeris chiriri). The diet of both is characterized by a high spatial turnover, which seems to reflect the local composition of available resources. In terms of niche, both show similar behavior, narrowing the diet dimension but feeding on a wider range of strata during the dry season. Our data indicates that although presenting a narrower niche, E. cactorum explores qualitatively and quantitatively a larger pool of resources (when compared to Brotogeris chiriri), thus presenting more behavioral versatility. Regarding the released population of E. cactorum, most of the individuals survived and adapted to the environment, dispersing itself and congregating with the natural population. The released population presented lower diet richness, with the predominance of exotic and/or cultivated species, and not feeding on zoological resources. The composition differences implies on a low diet similarity with a of the natural populations and to different plant-animal interactions, as released animals shows a preference for the predation of non-reproductive parts. In terms of niche, the released population of E. cactorum presents higher homogeneity on the diet, but responds to the seasonal varieties in a similar way to the natural populations, by narrowing the niche on the diet dimension but feeding on a wide strata during dry season. Based on these results, it seems to train individuals to use plants that compose the local flora, as these could improve success under a highly seasonality such as found at the Caatinga.

Silva, Liriane Reis da 21 March 2014 (has links)
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / In this paper, a study on masonry infilled reinforced concrete (RC) frames subjected to service limit state horizontal loads is presented, considering the masonry panel contribution in the stiffness of the structure. The analysis of infilled frames is performed in two ways: using the equivalent diagonal strut concept, called here as macromodelling and the finite element method (FEM) for the micromodelling. Due to simplicity, equivalent strut models are really attractive for the inclusion of masonry panels in structural models of buildings frames. However, formulations available in the literature provide substantially distinct values for determining the axial rigidity of the equivalent strut, and disregarding some important parameters of the structural behavior of the infilled frame. In the FEM analysis, numerical simulations of infilled RC frames are done, with and without openings, with different spans, stiffness of the columns and masonry properties, using finite elements type shell in the modeling, in addition to the consideration of the contact frame-masonry. The simulations results allow the assessment of the limitations of the existing formulations for determining the width of the diagonal strut. In infilled frames with openings of doors and windows, is evaluated how the size and position of the aperture affects the stiffness of the structure. Finally, the maximum stresses (tensile, compression and shear) of all models are evaluated and compared with their respective resistant stresses in order to determine the possibility of cracking of the masonry panels of frames subjected to service limit state actions.
