Enhancing digital heritage archives using gamified annotationsMaina, Job King'ori January 2017 (has links)
In the context of digital heritage archives, we find heritage objects having intrinsic contextual and historical information. Capturing all that information is difficult, especially if that effort is left only to the professionals or institutions responsible for those digital heritage archives. In this study, we investigate how digital heritage archives can be enhanced using an annotation framework with a focus on gamification. So far, they have been focused on the collection of information and not really on the collaborative capabilities that they could have. We look at how we can add a collaborative element to an already existing digital heritage archive and incentivise users to engage with it more. This way, the owners present their data as the fixed content of the archive and the viewers are then able to present their contributions as annotations layered on the original work. Therefore, using gamified annotations as a proposed solution, we hypothesise that gamification could play an important role in giving the participants an incentive as to why they should be engaging with the digital heritage archive as well as guiding them to contribute relevant content. Through an experimental study, we found that gamified annotations do affect the number and quality of annotations submitted. We believe a successful implementation of a gamified annotation framework should go a long way to improve viewership, sharing, learning and debate around the content of the said digital heritage archives.

Topics in the grammar and documentation of South Efate, an Oceanic language of Central VanuatuThieberger, N. A. January 2004 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis presents topics in the grammar of South Efate, an Oceanic language of Central Vanuatu as spoken in Erakor village on the outskirts of Port Vila. There has been no previous grammatical description of the language, which has been classified as the southernmost member of the North- Central Vanuatu subgroup of languages. In this description I show that South Efate shares features with southern Vanuatu languages, including a lack of serial verb constructions of the kind known for its northern neighbours and the use of an echo-subject marker. The phonology of South Efate reflects an ongoing change in progress, with productive medial vowel deletion and consequent complex heterorganic consonant clusters. Development of self-archiving tools to support archiving, analysis and re-use of qualitative dataMartínez-García, Agustina January 2013 (has links)
The potential to share and re-use qualitative archived data has garnered much interest in recent years. This increased attention can be attributed mainly to advances in both data documentation standards and digital archiving technologies, which provide users with the ability to archive, share and disseminate qualitative research materials. However, there remain theoretical and epistemological barriers to and implications for the sharing and re-use of qualitative study data. One way to address these issues is by studying research practices (with practitioners’ active involvement), in combination with developing software tools that support digital archiving of qualitative studies. Semantic technologies, combined with metadata standards and documentation schemas have the potential to enhance qualitative data documentation, archiving and analysis. In fact, it has been established that data documentation is one of the key elements that enables data archiving. The use of appropriate standard documentation frameworks is crucial to data archives’ exposure and has a direct impact on the discoverability, search and retrieval of archived data. The technological aspect of this study has been the development of a self-archiving toolkit that makes use of such technologies. The purpose of this work was to allow users, with varying levels of research experience (e.g. from undergraduate student researchers up to more experienced senior researchers) to avail of the benefits offered by qualitative digital archiving. To complement the technological developments undertaken, the present study also explored the practices of different researchers: undergraduate student researchers, researchers involved in teaching research-oriented modules, as well as senior researchers. This exploration focused on the collection, organisation, analysis and presentation of qualitative data and how these relate to and can be supported by digital archiving to enable researchers to organise, disseminate, and visualise research collections.

The Activist’s Game : How do intersectionally marginalised independent game designers contribute to social justice movements? How does their digital artistic practice disrupt archival practices?Martin, Nina January 2021 (has links)
This Degree Project (DP) focuses on an under-researched area in the field of ComDev, namely the study of entertaining games. It explores and asks how independent and intersectionally marginalised game designers contribute to social justice movements. The trajectory of this DP is informed by responses to an online survey with 49 diasporic gamers of colour in the socalled global North. The game design practices researched encompass artistic, technological and archival endeavours. These are positioned within the individualistic, community and societal factors surrounding the participants of this research. Seven independent game designers of colour in Europe and the US were interviewed via video calls and a Foucauldian Discourse Analysis is applied to analyse their responses. The literature review considers previous research on the potential and flaws of new technologies, on game design as an art practice, on art as a social movement and on community, identity and demography in games. The consequential theoretical framework is based on a Critical Race theoretical and practical approach. In a commitment to intersectionality it further applies queer theory and postcolonial theory as its pillars to conducting this subjectivist qualitative research. The findings suggest that game designers exist at the intersection of art, technology and industry and hold the agency to contribute to social movements. They may do so through an empowerment lens and community efforts, while not claiming the title of an activist per say. Through further research their contribution to development may be further explored.

Describing dynamic data journalism: developing a survey of news applicationsBoss, Katherine, Broussard, Meredith 30 October 2017 (has links)
Preserving dynamic, born-digital data journalism requires more than web scraping, as news stories today are built from much more than just text and images. Data journalism projects like news applications, or “news apps,” are composed of a database, the data in the database, the graphical interface that appears in the browser, accompanying text, and often images, videos, audio, and other multimedia components. Existing Internet archiving methods are not sufficient to save these data journalism projects for the future.
This paper summarizes the context and history of news apps archiving, and describes the development of a survey of news applications. This survey will be used to create a working list of news organizations that are producing data journalism in the United States and a better sense of how and where these projects are currently being stored. The results of the survey will inform recommendations and processes for archiving dynamic data journalism.

Analýza výzkumných dat na základě fondu disertačních prací Univerzity Karlovy v Praze s ohledem na dlouhodobé uložení digitálních objektů / Research Data Analysis Based on the Collection of Dissertation Theses of Charles University in Prague with Regard to Long-term Digital PreservationPavlásková, Eliška January 2016 (has links)
This dissertation thesis focuses on research data and their use in academics from the point of view of long-term preservation. It maps usage of research data at Charles University in Prague, analyses them and lays the foundation for further research. The first part of the text focuses on the theory of long term preservation and describes the most relevant concepts regarding users, storage and structure of research data. The second part is devoted directly to research data. It consists of definition of research data, the short explanation of their importance and sources, and the model of their lifecycle. The pivotal part of the thesis is the description and the results of the research itself. The research was conducted during the year 2015 and was based on a sample of dissertation theses from the collections of Charles University in Prague. Collected data were analysed by the methods of content analysis and grounded theory. Results are presented in two main parts - content analysis results with regard to differences among science, social science and humanities, and qualitative analysis results. 我國博碩士論文數位典藏策略之研究 / A Study on the Strategy of the Digital Archiving of the Electronic Theses and Dissertations in Taiwan陳奕達 Unknown Date (has links)
