This study has its objective the social-historical construction of the Gameleira Tragedy (1971) and its consequences in the memory off Belo Horizonte from the perspective of its social players. The Gameleira Tragedy is considered even today the biggest accident in the history of the construction industry in the country and the biggest ever to occur in the city of Belo Horizonte. The collapse of the colossal Gameleira Expo Pavilion where 512 laborers worked caused the death of almost a hundred workers, a large number of people were maimed and others had mental problems. The construction and inspection responsibilities rested on the shoulder of the state, the project was Niemeyer?s, the structural calculations were the responsibility of Joaquim Cardozo, the foundation was executed by SOBRAF and the building was the responsibility of SERGEN Engineering. The research follows mainly a qualitative approach utilizing the Oral History methodology encompassing therefore oral sources documents, legal and journalistic imagery. This is thus, the bases for a construction for 13 categories of analysis that subsidized the social-historical reconstruction of the Gameleira Tragedy. The sample was composed of 6 groups for a total of 26 deponents. The research achieved its objective by elaborating a social-historic reconstruction of the Gameleira Tragedy from the perspective of its social actors. The work contributes to the elucidation and understanding of the Tragedy and its consequences on the way of life of the social actors envolved in it. As a consequence there is an empowerment in course of the social players in view of the need required by them for the construction of a Memorial to honor the victims of the Gameleira Tragedy / Doutorado / Educação, Sociedade, Politica e Cultura / Doutor em Educação

Older adults' experiences of a flood disaster : making sense of an extraordinary event : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Psychology at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

Tuohy, Robyn Jean January 2009 (has links)
Disasters occur within the routines of everyday life and have a disruptive and destructive impact on human lives. To understand how older individuals make sense of a disaster, nine older adults in Kaitaia, New Zealand were interviewed about their experience of a flood they experienced in July 2007. These interviews were conducted with four residents living in a rest home and five pensioners living independently who were evacuated from their homes. The two groups differed in the levels of support and assistance received before, during, and after the disaster. The rest home residents experienced little disruption and did not require relocation; the pensioners experienced major disruption and relocation. Thematic analysis was used to describe how these older adults’ accounted for their experiences of the flood. The narratives were influenced by the participants’ identity as either dependent rest home residents or pensioners living independently in the community. The analysis revealed that their accounts of the disaster were incorporated and integrated into the personal and social context of each person’s life story. Narrative themes that emerged from the analysis for the pensioner group were: coping with limited assistance, the importance of treasured possessions, and social support and community. The pensioner themes reflected their vulnerability to a disaster and the challenges they faced during the post disaster recovery phase. Themes for the rest home residents were ageing and dependency, and the importance of protection, care, and trust. These themes reflected the dependent world of the rest home residents and the security of being cared for.

Hamelin, Marilou 10 1900 (has links)
Anthropogenic climate change poses enormous challenges for all human societies. These major challenges will test the adaptive capacities of States and their institutions and communities around the world and will need to be resolved through a surge of human solidarity in order to mitigate the consequences. Canada is already experiencing significant global warming. The country has recently been affected by extreme weather events: heatwaves, forest fires, abnormal drought and floods which are expected to increase in intensity with anthropogenic climate change. The province of Quebec was affected by heavy flooding between 2017 and 2019. The main objective of this study is to discuss how the ecosocial paradigm can evolve social work as a field of knowledge and intervention in a context of climate change. This study was based on data from focus groups carried out with stakeholders following the floods in Quebec (2017-2019). Our analysis targets interventions carried out in the context of flooding, in the south of the province, implemented by the health system. The data were collected during group interviews carried out with psychosocial workers and CI(U)SSS managers during the months of October and November 2019. The following themes emerged from the analyzes: the characteristics of the floods in 2019, the differences of opinion on climate change, the help and support provided during the floods and citizen participation. I will also emphasize the possible exacerbation of social inequalities in this context. Other themes were also found to be important: the engagement of psychosocial workers, participation and the decentralization of political decisions. Finally, my reflections will focus on the social consequences of flooding and the types of social practices that are relevant in the era of climate change and in an emergency context.
