Investigação longitudinal dos efeitos de diferentes contingências com estímulos apetitivos e aversivos sobre o desamparo aprendido / Longitudinal research on the effects of different contingencies with appetitive and aversive stimuli upon learned helplessness

A hipótese do desamparo aprendido foi apresentada por Seligman & Maier em 1976 com uma suposta generalidade para todas as condições de estímulo, aversivos ou não e também como um modelo explicativo para a depressão humana. Esta proposição permitiu algumas manipulações experimentais no sentido de reverter o efeito do desamparo, utilizando, inclusive, reforçamento positivo na fase de \"terapia\". A partir dessas questões, o presente trabalho investigou: (a) se animais que apresentaram desamparo em teste de fuga também apresentam dificuldade de aprendizagem reforçada positivamente, envolvendo ou não controle de estímulos; (b) se a exposição ao reforço positivo elimina o desamparo e (c) se o desamparo interfere na resistência à mudança, medida sobre uma segunda aprendizagem discriminativa, reforçada positivamente, que envolve inversão do controle de estímulos. Ratos foram expostos a choques controláveis (C), incontroláveis (I) ou nenhum choque (N), e posteriormente submetidos ao teste de fuga. Foram selecionados três grupos (n=4) de animais que apresentaram desamparo (grupo I) ou aprendizagem de fuga no teste (grupos C e N). Em seguida, todos foram submetidos a (1) reforçamento positivo da resposta de pressão à barra (modelagem, CRF e 10 sessões de treino discriminativo FR/extinção), (2) re-teste de fuga, (3) 10 sessões de treino discriminativo com inversão dos estímulos sinalizadores. Outros quatro animais receberam apenas as sessões de reforçamento positivo. Obteve-se que todos os sujeitos aprenderam igualmente a discriminação e sua reversão, e que 3/4 dos animais do grupo I mantiveram o desamparo no segundo teste de fuga. Esses resultados indicam que o desamparo não se generalizou para a aprendizagem reforçada positivamente e que a exposição ao reforçamento positivo não aboliu o desamparo para a maioria dos sujeitos. Os dados foram discutidos considerando-se o efeito seletivo do desamparo, que ocorre apenas frente a algumas contingências, mas não a todas. Quanto ao fato da \"terapia\" com reforço positivo não ter modificado a dificuldade de aprender uma resposta mediante reforçamento negativo isso sugere que, se o desamparo decorre da aprendizagem de impossibilidade de controle sobre o ambiente, essa aprendizagem não abrange todos os estímulos do ambiente de forma generalizada, mas apenas a uma (ou algumas) determinada classe de estímulos. A identificação das características que definem essa(s) classe (ser choque, ser aversivo ou outras) também deve ser objeto de futuras investigações. / The learned helplessness hypothesis was put forward by Seligman & Maier in 1976 under the assumption of generality among all stimulus conditions, aversive or otherwise, and as an explanatory model of human depression. This proposition allowed for some experimental manipulations aimed at reversing the effect, using, among others things, positive reinforcement during a \"therapy\" phase. With that in mind, the present research attempted to investigate whether: (a) animals that showed signs of helplessness in an escape test also show a learning deficit with positive reinforcement, whether or not involving stimulus control; (b) the exposure to positive reinforcement may cancel out helplessness and (c) helplessness interferes with resistance to change, measured during a second, positively reinforced, discrimination learning (reversal). Rats were first exposed to controllable (C), uncontrollable (I) or no shocks (N) and then to an escape test. Three groups (n=4) were selected: one that displayed helplessness (group I) and two that learned to escape (groups C and N). After that, all subjects were exposed to (1) positive reinforcement of lever pressing (shaping, CRF and ten sessions of discrimination between FR and extinction), (2) the same escape test, (3) ten sessions of discrimination learning with reversed discriminative stimuli. Other four animals were exposed only to sessions of positive reinforcement. All animals learned discrimination and reversal, and three out of four animals of group I remained helplessness in the second escape test. These results suggest that helplessness did not generalize to a positively reinforced task and that exposure to positive reinforcement did not cancel out helplessness for most subjects. Results are discussed considering the selective effect of helplessness, which occurs under some conditions, but not under all. The fact that therapy with positive reinforcement did not reduce the learning deficit observed with negative reinforcement suggest that if helplessness result from learning that it is impossible to control the environment, this knowledge does not include all stimuli in a generalized manner, but only one (or some) certain stimuli class. The identification of the characteristics that define these classes (electric shocks, aversive stimuli, among others) should also be the purpose of future research.

Efeito de diferentes treinos de discriminação sobre as fixações dos olhos de humanos / The effect of different discrimination trainings on human fixations of the human eye

O estudo das fixações e dos movimentos dos olhos pode trazer contribuições para o entendimento do estabelecimento do controle de estímulos discriminativos. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi verificar se análises mais moleculares das durações e frequências das fixações dos olhos de humanos em direção a estímulos antecedentes em diferentes treinos de discriminação fornecem resultados mais sistemáticos sobre estas fixações do que os resultados obtidos até o presente momento. Foram realizados 3 experimentos com 4 fases cada um. Os participantes foram jovens com idades entre 16 e 27 anos. Cada participante foi submetido a uma sessão experimental individual. Nos treinos de discriminação, 2 conjuntos de 80 imagens que não se repetiram ao longo do treino foram utilizados como estímulos antecedentes. As respostas a serem controladas discriminativamente foram pressões na barra de espaço de um teclado de computador e as consequências diferenciais programadas para estas respostas foram apresentação de um som (plim) e apresentação de pontos. O Experimento 1 contou com 4 participantes. Na 1ª fase, pressionar a barra de espaço diante de estímulos dos 2 conjuntos não teve consequências programadas. Na segunda fase, os sons foram apresentados contingentes a pressões na barra em esquema de intervalo variável de 3 s (VI-3 s) apenas diante dos estímulos de um dos conjuntos (componentes de reforço). Não houve consequências programadas para pressões na barra diante dos estímulos do segundo conjunto nessa fase (componentes de extinção). Na 3ª fase, as contingências de reforço e extinção foram revertidas em relação aos conjuntos de estímulos antecedentes. Na 4ª fase, pressões à barra diante de estímulos de ambos os conjuntos podiam produzir o som e os pontos em VI-3 s. Ao final da sessão, o participante foi informado de quantos pontos recebeu. No Experimento 2, com 4 participantes, o componente de extinção foi substituído por um componente em que pressões na barra tinham como consequência, em VI-3 s, um som diferente, indicativo de perda de pontos. O Experimento 3, com 3 participantes, foi análogo ao primeiro, com a exceção de que, durante a 2ª e 3ª fases, pressões na barra durante os últimos 2 segundos dos componentes de extinção postergaram a mudança para o próximo componente. Durante todo o experimento foram registrados os movimentos dos olhos dos participantes, as pressões na barra de espaço e recebimento de pontos. RESULTADOS: No Experimento 1, para os 4 participantes, nas 2ª e 3ª fases, as durações das primeiras fixações nos estímulos relacionados ao reforço foram mais longas do que as fixações nos estímulos relacionados à extinção. Este resultado não foram replicados nos Experimentos 2 e 3. Esta análise mais molecular apresentou sistematicidade maior de resultados que análises anteriores / Eye movements and fixation may contribute for understanding the establishment of discrimination learning. The present research investigated whether more molecular analysis than the ones made so far of frequency and duration of eye fixation to antecedent stimuli during discrimination training may result in systematic data. Three experiments were conducted, each one with 4 different phases. Participants were humans from 16 to 27 years old. Each participant was submitted to only one individual experimental session of about 12 minutes. On discrimination trainings, a set of 80, non-repeating, abstract images and a set of 80, non-repeating, figurative images were used as antecedent stimuli. Responses to be controlled were computer keyboard space-bar pressings and differential consequences were a sound (plin) presentation and delivery of points. Experiment 1 counted with 4 participants. On Phase 1 space-bar pressing had no differential consequences. On Phase 2 sound was presented contingent upon space-bar pressing on a variable interval of 3 s schedule (VI 3-s) during display of only one set of images (reinforcing components). No consequences were programmed for space-bar pressings during display of the alternative set (extinction components). On Phase 3 reinforcement and extinction contingencies were reversed in relation to antecedent stimuli sets. On Phase 4 space-bar pressing during display of both sets of stimuli were reinforced with sound and points on VI 3-s. The amount of points received was only informed for the participant at the end of the session. Experiment 2 counted with 4 participants and the same 4 phases. The extinction components were exchanged for components in which points indicated by a second kind of sound (bee) were withdraw contingent to space-bar pressing on a VI 3-s schedule. Experiment 3 counted with 3 participants and the same 4 phases. On this experiment termination of extinction components was contingent on 2 s without space-bar pressings. Eye fixation, space-bar pressing, and sound delivery were registered during the entire sessions for the 3 experiments. Duration of the first fixation on antecedent stimulus was longer for reinforcement components than for extinction components during Phases 2 and 3 for the 4 participants of Experiment 1. These results were not replicated for Experiments 2 and 3. The more molecular analysis resulted in a more systematic data of human eye fixation

Social learning is a topic of many studies. We tested the effect of social learning on the acquisition of avoidance against aposematic prey. We have chosen wild-caught adult and naive hand-reared juvenile great tits (Parus major) as a model predator species, because their individual avoidance learnig of aposematic prey is well-studied. We used red and green paper dummies of bugs with a mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) stuck underneath as an artificial prey. Mealworms were soaked in water or in bitter-tasting solution of quinine. We used two types of conspecific demonstrators - naive birds that showed aversive reactions while tasting an unpalatable prey and experienced birds that were trained not to handle the unpalatable pray at all. We compared effects of both demonstrators on discrimination learning and we tested whether these effects differ in adult and juvenile birds. Observing an experienced demonstrator had an effect on the performance of observers at the beginning of learning process. The observers did not reject the unpalatable prey completely, but the number of trials in which they correctly chose the palatable prey was higher in comparison with birds that observed naive demonstrators and birds from the control group with no demonstrator. Comparing a discriminative stimulus procedure to a pairing procedure: Conditioning neutral social stimuli to function as conditioned reinforcers.

Social stimuli that function as reinforcers for most children generally do not function as reinforcers for children diagnosed with autism. These important social stimuli include smiles, head nods, thumb-ups, and okay signs. It should be an important goal of therapy for children with autism to condition these neutral social stimuli to function as reinforcers for children diagnosed with autism. There is empirical evidence to support both a pairing procedure (classical conditioning) and a discriminative stimulus procedure to condition neutral stimuli to function as reinforcers. However, there is no clear evidence as to the superiority of effectiveness for either procedure. Despite this most textbooks and curriculum guides for children with autism state only the pairing procedure to condition neutral stimuli to function as reinforcers. Recent studies suggest that the discriminative stimulus procedure may in fact be more effective in conditioning neutral stimuli to function as reinforcers for children diagnosed with autism. The present research is a further comparison of these two procedures. Results from one participant support recent findings that suggest the discriminative stimulus procedure is more effective in conditioning neutral stimuli to function as reinforcers. But the results from the other participant show no effects from either procedure, suggesting future research into conditions necessary to condition neutral social stimuli to function as reinforcers for children with autism.

Teaching Observational Learning to Children with Autism: An In-vivo and Video-Model Assessment

Observational learning (OL) occurs when an individual contacts reinforcement as a direct result of discriminating the observed consequences of other individuals' responses. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) may have deficits in observational learning and previous research has demonstrated that teaching a series of prerequisite skills (i.e., attending, imitation, delayed imitation, and consequence discrimination) can result in observational learning. We sequentially taught these prerequisite skills for three young children with ASD across three play-based tasks. We assessed the direct and indirect effects of training by assessing OL before and after instruction across tasks and task variations (for two participants) during both in-vivo and video-model probes using a concurrent multiple-probe design. All participants acquired the prerequisite skills and demonstrated observational learning during probes of directly-trained tasks. Generalization results varied across participants. Observational learning generalized to one untrained task for one participant. For the other two participants, observational learning generalized to variations of the trained tasks but not to untrained tasks. Generalization additionally occurred during the in-vivo probes for both participants for whom we assessed this response. Implications of these findings, as well as directions for future research, are discussed.

Social learning in animals is a frequently studied topic, including birds. Great tits belong to frequently tested passerine species in this context. For this experiment we have chosen another tit species as model birds - adult and juvenile blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) and coal tits (Periparus ater). We tested an effect of social information on discrimination learning between palatable and unpalatable prey. Red and green artificial prey items resembling shieldbugs with a mealworm glued underneath were offered to birds. One variant was palatable, the other was unpalatable, soaked in bitter substance. Experimental groups were allowed to observe a pretrained tutor of the same species choosing palatable prey variant and rejecting the unpalatable one. The birds were then subjected to an individual discrimination learning task with simultaneously offered palatable and unpalatable prey items. The control group was not allowed to observe tutor and learned only individually. On the following day, all birds participated in a memory test. We tested if social information has an influence on avoidance learning in juvenile and adult birds of both species. O Contraste Sucessivo é um dos paradigmas experimentais que modelam a experiencia de perda. Nele, os organismos deixam de estarem expostos à eventos reforçadores, apetitivos e/ou preferidos para entrarem em contato com outros de menor qualidade ou valor. Isto resulta numa série de estratégias comportamentais caracterizadas por um importante componente emocional, uma diminuição na execução da resposta (consumatória ou operante) que não está mais correlacionada com a consequência, um aumento na execução de respostas que eram menos prováveis, e uma conservação da estrutura do comportamento exibido antes da perda ou deterioro. A função dos estímulos antecedentes e/ou discriminativos envolvidos, que constituem a parte vigente da contingência que foi quebrada, também tem se mostrado comprometida. Contudo, a interação entre essas características tem sido estudada de modo separado, seja por complicações técnicas ou por isolamento teórico entre os paradigmas. Neste experimento se apresenta uma proposta que tenta obter uma caracterização mais abrangente das estratégias comportamentais que emergem numa situação de perda, aproveitando a versatilidade topológica e funcional da resposta ocular, e a disponibilidade de recursos técnicos que permitem obter medidas precisas dela. Para isso, no procedimento utilizado foram disponibilizadas alternativas de resposta com diferentes valores de reforçamento em cada. 192 fotografias do IAPS foram categorizadas segundo seu valor emotivo e seu conteúdo em seis categorias: Eróticas, Filhotes (Agradáveis), Paisagens naturais, Paisagens artificiais (Neutrais), Doenças e Violência (Desagradáveis). Pares dessas fotografias foram apresentadas num arranjo de quatro quadrantes na tela do computador, antecedidas de forma consistente por Figuras geométricas específicas para cada categoria, enquanto os tempos de fixação eram registrados com um rastreador ocular. Uma sétima figura geométrica foi pareada aleatoriamente com fotografias de todas as categorias. Após atingir um critério de estabilidade baseado no ranqueamento e correspondência entre os tempos de fixação das Figuras geométricas e das Fotografias, as Fotografias da categoria mais observada foram substituídas por Fotografias daquela correspondente ao terceiro lugar, mas continuaram sendo antecedidas pela mesma Figura geométrica. Os resultados mostraram que o procedimento foi sensível às condições e a manipulação experimental. Foi possível estabelecer um ranqueamento entre as categorias a partir das respostas oculares e caracterizar um padrão de observação após a incongruência introduzida. No caso, as preferências exibidas pela participante foram reorganizadas, com um aumento nos tempos de fixação das categorias agradáveis, evitação das fotografias da categoria Doença enquanto a Figura geométrica que à antecedia começou a ser mais observada, e um aumento no tempo de fixação da categoria de imagens aleatórias. No caso das Categorias alteradas, as fotografias de Filhotes (terceira categoria no ranqueamento) que começaram a ser antecedidas pela Figura geométrica correspondente à categoria Violência (a mais observada), foram menos observadas do que àquelas antecedidas pela figura geométrica treinada na fase anterior. São discutidas as melhoras que o procedimento poderia ter assim como o uso das medidas mais apropriadas na exploração de diversos fenômenos comportamentais. Se analisa se os resultados podem ser entendidos dentro do paradigma de contraste e por último se apresentam comentários sobre a necessidade de aproveitar os desenvolvimentos técnicos que permitem executar experimentos mais complexos / Successive Contrast is one of the experimental paradigms that models the experience of loss. On it, organisms are no longer exposed to reinforcing, appetitive and/or preferred events, but to some others with less quality or value. This results in different behavioral strategies characterized by an important emotional component, a decrement in the response not any longer associated with the consequence (consummatory or operant), an increment in less likely responses, and a preservation of behavioral structure from before the impairment. The role of the antecedent and / or discriminative stimuli involved, which constitute the current part of the contingency that has been broken, has also shown to be compromised. However, the interaction between these characteristics has been studied separately, either by technical complications or by theoretical isolation between paradigms. In this study, we propose a procedure to obtain a more comprehensive characterization of the behavioral strategies that emerge in a situation of loss, taking advantage of the topological and functional versatility of the ocular response, and the availability of technical resources that allow to obtain precise measurements of it. To solve this, alternatives for responding with different values of reinforcement were available. 192 photographs from the IAPS were categorized into six categories according to their emotional value and their content: Erotic, Puppies (Pleasant), Natural Landscapes, Artificial Landscapes (Neutral), Diseases and Violence (Unpleasant). Pairs of these photographs were presented in a four-quadrant arrangement on the computer screen, consistently preceded by specific geometric figures for each category, while fixation times were recorded with an eye tracker. A seventh geometric figure was randomly paired with photographs of all categories. After reaching a stability criterion based on the ranking and correspondence between the fixation times of the Geometric Figures and the Photographs, the Photographs of the most observed category were replaced by Photographs of the one corresponding to the third place, but continued to be preceded by the same Geometric Figure. The results showed that the procedure worked well within our experimental conditions and manipulation. It was possible to establish a ranking from the ocular responses among the categories and to characterize a pattern of observation after the introduced incongruity. The preferences exhibited by the participant were reorganized, with an increase in the fixation time of the pleasant categories, avoidance of photographs of the category Disease while its geometric Figure became more observed, and an increase in the fixation time of the category of random images. On the changed Categories, the photographs of Pups (third category in the ranking) that began to be preceded by the geometric Figure corresponding to the category Violence (the most observed category), were less observed than those preceded by the geometric figure trained in the previous phase. The improvements that the procedure could have as well as the use of the most appropriate measures in the exploration of several behavioral phenomena are discussed. It is analyzed if the results can be understood within the contrast paradigm and finally comments are made on the need to take advantage of the technical developments that allow to execute more complex experiments

Peak Shift in Remembering

If remembering is discriminative behaviour along the dimension of time and if, as Sargisson and White (2001) argued, generalisation around a peak can occur in this behaviour, then the peak shift which has been shown in discrimination along so many other stimulus dimensions, might also occur in remembering. To examine this hypothesis, 6 hens were trained in a delayed matching-to-sample procedure at delays of 2 and 4 s. The probability of reinforcement for correct responses was initially 0.9 at both delays until performance stabilised. A generalisation probe was then carried out by inserting unreinforced trials at delays of 0, 1, 1.5, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4.5, 5 and 6 s in a session amongst normal training delay trials. The generalisation functions had a slight peak around 2 s. After further training, a second generalisation probe showed a slightly declining function. The probability of reinforcement at the 2 s delay was then dropped to 0.1, so that in the terms of the classical generalisation/peak shift paradigm, 2-s delay trials became S¯ and 4-s delay trials became S+. A third generalisation probe then was conducted. This resulted in a flat function from 0 s to 3 s, and a large, clear peak in discriminative performance at 4.5 s over all hens. After more of the same differential reinforcement training, a fourth generalisation probe showed a broad curve peaking at 3 s, with minima at 1 s and 6 s and a global maximum at 0 s. Another training condition was then run, with the probability of reinforcement at the 2-s delay dropped to 0, to see if increasing the aversiveness of S¯ would again result in a peak shift. A fifth generalisation probe was then conducted. This showed a sharp decline in discriminability at shorter delays, a dip around 2 s, and a very small area shift beyond 4 s, but no clear peak shift. This was interpreted as being due to overlearning, with the consequences of remembering at S¯ no longer significantly affecting performance at S+. A final training condition was then run, with S¯ moved from 2 s to 3 s with zero probability of reinforcement, and for only a short period, to prevent overlearning. It was predicted that this would cause peak shift to re-occur. A sixth generalisation probe was then conducted. This found a further decline in discriminability at shorter delays, a shift in the dip from 2 s to 3 s, and a large, clear peak at 4.5 s. This demonstration of peak shift in a remembering process would not have been predicted by any traditional theory of memory, but strongly supports the conception of remembering as discriminative behaviour along the stimulus dimension of time.

Foi possível estabelecer um ranqueamento entre as categorias a partir das respostas oculares e caracterizar um padrão de observação após a incongruência introduzida. No caso, as preferências exibidas pela participante foram reorganizadas, com um aumento nos tempos de fixação das categorias agradáveis, evitação das fotografias da categoria Doença enquanto a Figura geométrica que à antecedia começou a ser mais observada, e um aumento no tempo de fixação da categoria de imagens aleatórias. No caso das Categorias alteradas, as fotografias de Filhotes (terceira categoria no ranqueamento) que começaram a ser antecedidas pela Figura geométrica correspondente à categoria Violência (a mais observada), foram menos observadas do que àquelas antecedidas pela figura geométrica treinada na fase anterior. São discutidas as melhoras que o procedimento poderia ter assim como o uso das medidas mais apropriadas na exploração de diversos fenômenos comportamentais. Se analisa se os resultados podem ser entendidos dentro do paradigma de contraste e por último se apresentam comentários sobre a necessidade de aproveitar os desenvolvimentos técnicos que permitem executar experimentos mais complexos / Successive Contrast is one of the experimental paradigms that models the experience of loss. On it, organisms are no longer exposed to reinforcing, appetitive and/or preferred events, but to some others with less quality or value. This results in different behavioral strategies characterized by an important emotional component, a decrement in the response not any longer associated with the consequence (consummatory or operant), an increment in less likely responses, and a preservation of behavioral structure from before the impairment. The role of the antecedent and / or discriminative stimuli involved, which constitute the current part of the contingency that has been broken, has also shown to be compromised. However, the interaction between these characteristics has been studied separately, either by technical complications or by theoretical isolation between paradigms. In this study, we propose a procedure to obtain a more comprehensive characterization of the behavioral strategies that emerge in a situation of loss, taking advantage of the topological and functional versatility of the ocular response, and the availability of technical resources that allow to obtain precise measurements of it. To solve this, alternatives for responding with different values of reinforcement were available. 192 photographs from the IAPS were categorized into six categories according to their emotional value and their content: Erotic, Puppies (Pleasant), Natural Landscapes, Artificial Landscapes (Neutral), Diseases and Violence (Unpleasant). Pairs of these photographs were presented in a four-quadrant arrangement on the computer screen, consistently preceded by specific geometric figures for each category, while fixation times were recorded with an eye tracker. A seventh geometric figure was randomly paired with photographs of all categories. After reaching a stability criterion based on the ranking and correspondence between the fixation times of the Geometric Figures and the Photographs, the Photographs of the most observed category were replaced by Photographs of the one corresponding to the third place, but continued to be preceded by the same Geometric Figure. The results showed that the procedure worked well within our experimental conditions and manipulation. It was possible to establish a ranking from the ocular responses among the categories and to characterize a pattern of observation after the introduced incongruity. The preferences exhibited by the participant were reorganized, with an increase in the fixation time of the pleasant categories, avoidance of photographs of the category Disease while its geometric Figure became more observed, and an increase in the fixation time of the category of random images. On the changed Categories, the photographs of Pups (third category in the ranking) that began to be preceded by the geometric Figure corresponding to the category Violence (the most observed category), were less observed than those preceded by the geometric figure trained in the previous phase. The improvements that the procedure could have as well as the use of the most appropriate measures in the exploration of several behavioral phenomena are discussed. It is analyzed if the results can be understood within the contrast paradigm and finally comments are made on the need to take advantage of the technical developments that allow to execute more complex experiments
