This work is about the building of Jean Rouch's cinema, since his first approach to the African world and the questions that he would be interested when he has created his movies, till the happening of the cinema-vérité, a film movement of the 1960s that would propose new relations between the cinema and the real. We broach Rouch's interest in walk over frontiers and to establish contacts - or to dissolve it - between artistic and scientific procedures. To go on with this research, we have decided to analyze a period of his productions that begins at his first ethnographic film, Au pays des mages noirs (1946-1947) till the making of Chronique d'un été (1960). Inside this period it is La pyramide humaine (1959), one of his films less studied, but whose special characteristic make it a important bridge between his first experiences with the "improvisation films", Jaguar (1954) and Moi, un Noir (1958), and the emergence of the cinéma-vérité, a movement that it will influence, specially the anthropological film, but the modern cinema in a generic way. To support our reflections we have made a reception experience of the film La pyramide humaine with young people of the NGO Cinefavela, in the community of Heliópolis, together with the students of a Cinema University and a professional actress. We hope that the product of this experience, with the reflections about it, help us to comprehend the extraordinary work of the anthropological filmmaker Jean Rouch, specially in a moment of his work that is quoted here / Mestrado / Mestre em Multimeios

Abstract: A forced silence. Seven years of interdiction (1971-1978) by the department of Censorship and Public Entertainment of the military regime. Twenty-five years until finally it becomes accessible to the public (1979-2004). There it is the path of the documentary O País de São Saruê [The Country of Saint Saruê], by Vladimir Carvalho, launched in 1971, which is based on the view about the northern backcountry as an underdeveloped region of the country. The main goal of this research is to understand this path under the light of memory and forgetfulness; that is what image of Brazil that was tried to be left or disregarded by the author as well as by the censors to the future generations. Moreover, we will approach the construction of the theme on the underdevelopment in the filmic writing narrative and to what extension it reveals the director political engagement: what were the justifications of the censors to interdict the film; the consequences of this censor act in the press of the time; how the movie took over the backcountry culture to create a political narrative and at the same time utopian and lyrical, unique in Brazilian documentary field. / Mestrado / Politica, Memoria e Cidade / Mestre em História

Trilogia Qatsi : visões e movimentos de mundo / Qatsi trilogy : visions and movements of world

Bonotto, André, 1985- 14 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Francisco Elinaldo Teixeira / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Campinas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-14T18:12:04Z (GMT). / Abstract: This work is a filmic analysis of the Qatsi trilogy (Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, Naqoyqatsi), directed by Godfrey Reggio. Firstly, it is presented a bio-filmography of the director, indicating his trajectory and some comments on each of his films. Then, the analysis of the trilogy takes place, beginning with Koyaanisqatsi and focusing the acceleration movements along the filmic passages, mainly due to the registration of accelerated images, camera movement and music-image relationship. The Powaqqatsi analysis involves the discussion of the fabulative element present in the film: on the people and actions represented as well on the own filmmaking process. During the Naqoyqatsi analysis, it has been pointed out the diversity of visual materials used, in which dominate technical, mediatic and virtual images, and their relation with the shock of two opposite impulses, i.e. chaos and control. Further, the major issues focused in each film are again considered, taking into account their relations with the other films - the universe of the whole trilogy. The opening of the initial horizon occurs relating the films of the Qatsi trilogy with those of the movement of the city symphonies, through aesthetic and some thematic relationships. Finally, it is performed a further expansion of the initial horizon, identifying characteristics of the films analyzed with elements originated from the intersection of the documentary and experimental film domains, like the frequent narratives fragmentation and anamorphic image fluxes. The intersection of these fields would allow the characterization of the filmic stylistics known as poetic documentary, that is considered to be the case of the films here analyzed. / Mestrado / Mestre em Multimeios

The making of the documentary film Women in Red.

Horst, Jennifer Lynne 08 1900 (has links)
Though the remnants of a stereotype created over two millennia ago still thrive in American popular culture today, redheaded women are enjoying a more positive role in society than they have ever seen before. Women in Red explores the experience of the redheaded woman in America today by examining how the stereotypes have affected a small group of them, how these women relate to the stereotypes, and why, given the verisimilitude of the stereotype, a non-redheaded woman would embrace such an identity with the simple act of dying her hair red. This is the story behind the experience that is Women in Red.

Snakes Alive!

Greer, Daniel 08 1900 (has links)
On three days in March each year, the sleepy little town of Sweetwater, Texas transforms into the rattlesnake capital of the world. Snake hunters and curious tourists converge on the town of 12,000 for the Annual Sweetwater Rattlesnake Roundup. On the outside of the Nolan County Coliseum, the smell of funnel cakes and hot-dogs fills the air as vendors sell snacks and souvenirs. However the real action is inside where snakes collected from all over the state lay in piles by the thousands, waiting to be sexed, milked and ultimately killed. Through interviews and observational footage, "Snakes Alive!" explores the Sweetwater Rattlesnake Roundup, those that participate in the event, and the elements that make it an unabashed West Texas tradition.
