Regional Geoid Determination Methods for the Era of Satellite Gravimetry : Numerical Investigations Using Synthetic Earth Gravity Models

Ågren, Jonas January 2004 (has links)
It is the purpose of this thesis to investigate different regional geoid determination methods with respect to their feasibility for use with a future GOCE satellite-only Earth Gravity Model (EGM). This includes investigations of various techniques, which involve different approximations, as well as the expected accuracy. Many, but not all, of these tasks are tested by means of Synthetic Earth Gravity Models (SEGMs). The study is limited to remove-compute-restore methods using Helmert condensation and to Sjöberg's combined approach (method with additive corrections). First, a number of modifications of Stokes' formula are tested with respect to their compatibility with a GOCE EGM having negligible commission error. It is concluded that the least squares modification method should be preferred. Next, two new point-mass SEGMs are constructed in such a way that the resulting models have degree variances representative for the full and topographically reduced gravity fields, respectively. These SEGMs are then used to test different methods for modified Stokes' integration and downward continuation. It is concluded that the combined method requires dense observations, obtained from the given surface anomalies by interpolation using a reduction for all known density anomalies, most notably the topography. Examples of other conclusions are that the downward continuation method of Sjöberg (2003a) performs well numerically. To be able to test topographic corrections, another SEGM is constructed starting from the reduced point-mass model, to which the topography, bathymetry and isostatic compensation are added. This model, which is called the Nordic SEGM, is then applied to test one strict and one more approximate approach to Helmert's condensation. One conclusion here is that Helmert's 1st method with the condensation layer 21 km below sea level should be preferred to Helmert's 2nd condensation strategy. The thesis ends with a number of investigations of Sjöberg's combined approach to geoid determination, which include tests using the Nordic SEGM. It is concluded that the method works well in practice for a region like Scandinavia. It is finally shown how the combined strategy may preferably be used to estimate height anomalies directly.

An Isostatic Earth Crustal Model : and Its Applications

Bagherbandi, Mohammad January 2011 (has links)
The Mohorovičič discontinuity (Moho), which is the surface separating the Earth’s crust from the mantle, is of great interest among geoscientists. The Moho depth can be determined by seismic and gravimetric methods. The seismic methods are expensive, time-consuming and suffer from lack of global coverage of data, while the gravimetric methods use inexpensive and mostly already available global and regional data based on an isostatic model. The main reasons for studying an isostatic model are on one hand the gaps and uncertainties of the seismic models, and, on the other hand, the generous availability of gravity data from global models for the gravimetric-isostatic model. In this study, we present a new gravimetric-isostatic Moho model, called the Vening Meinesz-Moritz (VMM) model. Also, a combined Moho model based on seismic and gravimetric models is presented. Classical isostatic hypotheses assume that the topographic potential is fully compensated at all wavelengths, while is not the case in reality. We found that the maximum degree of compensation for the topographic potential based on the new Moho model is 60, corresponding to the resolution of about 330 km. Other (dynamic) isostatic effects (such as temporal compensation, plate tectonics, post-glacial rebound, etc) should be considered as well, which are disregarded in this thesis. Numerical results imply that the dynamic phenomena affect mostly the long-wavelengths. The VMM model is applied for different purposes. The Moho density contrast is an important parameter for estimating the Moho depth, and we present a technique to simultaneously estimate Moho depth and density contrast by the VMM and seismic models. Another application is the recovery of gravity anomaly from Satellite Gravity Gradiometry (SGG) data by a smoothing technique, and we show that the VMM model performs better than the Airy-Heiskanen isostatic model. We achieved an rms difference of 4 mGal for the gravity anomaly estimated from simulated GOCE data in comparison with EGM08, and this result is better than direct downward continuation of the data without smoothing. We also present a direct method to recover Moho depth from the SGG mission, and we show that the recovered Moho is more or less of the same quality as that obtained from terrestrial gravimetric data (with an rms error of 2 km). Moreover, a strategy is developed for creating substitutes for missing GOCE data in Antarctica, where there is a polar gap of such data. The VMM model is further used for constructing a Synthetic Earth Gravity Model (SEGM). The topographic-isostatic potential is simple to apply for the SEGM, and the latter can be an excellent tool to fill data gaps, extending the EGMs to higher degrees and validating a recovery technique of the gravity field from a satellite mission. Regional and global tests of the SEGM yield a relative error of less than 3 % vs. EGM08 to degree 2160. / QC 20110405

Evaluation Of Climatic And Ecohydrological Effects On Longwave Radiation And Evapotranspiration

Rizou, Maria 01 January 2008 (has links)
Modern tools, nontraditional datasets and a better understanding of the interaction between climate and ecohydrology are continuously being developed as today's society is in critical need for improving water management, predicting hydrometeorological hazards and forecasting future climate. In particular, the study of the intra- and inter-annual variations in grass productivity and evapotranspiration caused by variations in precipitation/soil moisture and other biophysical factors is of great significance due to their relation to future climatic changes. The research presented here falls in three parts. In the first part of the dissertation, a land use adaptable model, based on the superposition of the temperature and water vapor pressure effects, is proposed for the effective clear sky emissivity. Ground radiometer and meteorological data, applicable in the subtropical climate of Saint Johns River Water Management District, Florida, were utilized for the model development over the spring season of 2004. The performance of this model was systematically evaluated by pertinent comparisons with previously established models using data over various land covers. The second part of the thesis investigates the dynamics of evapotranspiration with respect to its significant environmental and biological controls over an unmanaged bahia grassland. Eddy correlation measurements were carried out at a flux tower in Central Florida over the annual course of 2004. The main focus was on the sensitivity of the water vapor flux to wetness variables, namely the volumetric soil water content and the current precipitation index. It was shown that the time scales involved with the dynamics of evapotranspiration were on the order of six days, suggesting that depletion of the soil moisture was mostly responsible for the temporal fluctuations in evapotranspiration. Finally, simple models for the Priestley-Taylor factor were employed in terms of water availability, and the modeled results closely matched the eddy covariance flux values on daily time scale during all moisture conditions. In the third part of this work, the partitioning between latent and sensible heat fluxes was systematically examined with respect to biophysical factors. It was found that the seasonal variations in leaf area index, soil water content and net radiation were reflected in a strong seasonal pattern of the energy balance. Calculations of the bulk parameters, namely Priestley-Taylor parameter and decoupling coefficient, indicated that evapotranspiration of this grassland was controlled by water supply limitations and surface conductance. At an annual basis, the cumulative evapotranspiration was 59 percent of the precipitation received at the site. The results of this research complemented with other studies will promote better understanding of land-atmosphere interactions, accurate parameterizations of hydroclimatic models, and assessment of climate impact of grassland ecosystems.

Etude expérimentale et numérique des phénomènes de condensation dans un tube vertical partiellement immergé / Experimental and numerical study of condensation phenomena in a partially submerged vertical pipe

Khaophone, Davy 28 January 2016 (has links)
This thesis focuses on condensation phenomena occurring in a patented system designed by DCNS Company. The system ensures pressure regulation of nuclear boiler rooms embarked in naval vessels. Within the system occurs a downward liquid/vapor flow with phase change in a partially submerged vertical pipe. Subcooled liquid flows into the pipe and induce a suction of saturated vapor which condense in contact with liquid phase. This study aim to understand the physical phenomena occurring in the system and to simulate these phenomena. First, the condensation phenomena are studied with a test loop which conception, dimensioning, realization and exploitation were realized during this study. The experimental study identified the flow regimes occurring in the system and analyzed the impact of three parameters: the liquid flow rate, the liquid subcooling and the pressure at the system outlet. This study also proposed a simple model which determine the necessary conditions to completely drown the pipe, which minimize condensation phenomena. Thereafter, the numerical simulation of the two-phase flow was realized by CFD on ANSYS Fluent with the "Volume of Fluid" model. The condensation simulation was achieved by applying a condensation model used in literature. This model was added to the numerical code with User-Defined Functions (UDF). The simulation reproduced the weir regime flow at the pipe entrance and the vapor condensation inside the pipe.

Variação espaço-temporal da macrofauna bêntica da Plataforma Continental Oeste da Península Antártica / Spatiotemporal variation of benthic macrofauna on the West Antarctic Peninsula shelf

Karin Lutke Elbers 29 January 2010 (has links)
The West Antarctic Peninsula shelf (WAP shelf) experiences a high seasonal and interannual variability in surface primary production. Sea ice dynamics is the principal factor controlling productivity and, therefore, the downward particulate organic matter (POM) fluxes. The deposited POM, also called phytodetritus, forms dense layers of available labile food for benthic organisms. This straight relationship between water column and benthic processes is called benthic-pelagic coupling. A seasonal time-series study was conducted between November 1999 through March 2001 in tree sites on WAP shelf, to determine this relationship, specially the benthic macrofauna (> 300 µm) response to the POM flux and its posterior deposition. From a total of 15 box-corer samples (0.25 m2 each), approximately 25,000 macrofaunal individuals were collected, belonging to 22 taxa. Even with some variation along the shelf, ranging from 10,886 ind.m-2 (site A) to 2,326 ind.m-2 (B), the abundance and composition of macrofauna showed only modest seasonal changes. Differences in these parameters were clear between the inner and outer shelves, probably owing to the topography, which was composed of a basin in the innermost region and a flat region, in the offshore area. Differences in abundance and composition between sediment layers were also notable, with 90% of all individuals belonging to the 0-5 cm layer. Among the 185 identified species, Aurospio foodbancsia (Polychaeta, Spionidae), a typical species of Antarctic shelf regions and closely related to the deep-sea species A. dibranchiata, was dominant in all seasons and sites (2,087 ind.m-2). Besides polychaetes, bivalves, tanaids and oligochaetes were also abundant in WAP shelf. Peaks in abundance were observed for some species and this is believed to be related to seasonal recruitment, however not always associated with the availability of food. Polychaete functional groups did not vary along seasons, indicating that surface and subsurface deposit feeders were subsisting on the labile POM along the year, even during the winter, when POM flux to the benthos is extremely low. The results are similar to those obtained in other FOODBANCS works, and indicate that the WAP shelf macrofauna act as a low-pass filter, muting the seasonal water column processes.
