Nebel, Martina 01 September 2000 (has links)

”Take a Knife and Drain Your Life” : A Netnographic Analysis of Drain Gang’s Fandom, Subcultural Activity and Community Cultivation Online

Schmidt, Rasmus January 2023 (has links)
The thesis examines the subcultural activities and online fan community of Drainers (fans of the music collective Drain Gang) through TikTok. A netnographic analysis of fans’ engagement and community cultivation through prosumption is done through participation observation. Samples taken using a non-probability purposive sampling method are analyzed, categorized, and coded. By using theories of prosumption, uses and gratifications and a contemporary online take on subcultural theory from Bennet (2004) as well as Genova et al. (2022), the samples provide an insight into Drainers and their subculture. Results from the study suggest that community within TikTok is easy to find, yet difficult to regulate. It can thus be both a space for creative participation and opportunity for exploring identity as much as it can be for receiving negative comments and further stigmatization. Regardless of the app’s implications and limitations, it does successfully provide a platform for fans to connect, bond, share ideas and create authentic identity and a subcultural status. While plenty of previous research concerning fans and their communities exist, this study is through researcher’s immersion opening up a discussion about Drain Gang’s subculture and fans, which is essentially an untouched area of research. Although limitations are present such as lack of possibility to pick samples on TikTok based on publication date, as well as bias while collecting samples, it provides an insight into the online community and subculture which can be used to further explore the topic.

The fifth wave of emigration from Russia: circulating migration or brain drain?

А., Zemtsov, P. A. January 2023 (has links)
The volume of the master's thesis is 115 pages, including 92 pages of main text (without a list of references), 8 tables, 12 figures and appendices are used for illustration. The bibliographic list consists of 76 sources. The relevance of the topic of the master's thesis is due to the fact that since 2010 there has been a new wave of emigration from Russia associated with the global economic crisis, the consequences of which require detailed analysis. The purpose of the study is to determine the type of emigration from Russia and develop recommendations for optimizing state migration policy measures: study theories and concepts of migration; analyze the features of international migration in Russia as part of demographic processes; analyze the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of waves of emigration from Russia; study the fifth wave of emigration from Russia and assess its impact on the economic development of the country of origin; develop recommendations for optimizing state policy measures in the field of migration. The scientific novelty includes the very definition of the type of fifth wave of migration in the Russian Federation, namely, brain drain or circulating migration. The practical significance of the master's work is manifested in the possibility of determining the type of migration and the subsequent development of public policy measures aimed at optimizing the migration situation. The results of the study can serve as a basis for making decisions on attracting and retaining highly qualified personnel, as well as creating conditions that facilitate the circulation of migrants and their positive contribution to the economy and social sphere of the country.

LABOUR MARKET PERCEPTIONS OF CARIBBEAN INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND THE FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THEIR DECISIONS OF WHETHER TO REMAIN IN CANADA TO WORK OR TO RETURN HOME

Nisbett, Ashayna N. 10 1900 (has links)

Many Caribbean international students travel to Canada to complete their post-secondary education. Upon graduation, these students often remain in Canada to work as opposed to returning home. This study identifies the factors that influenced Caribbean international students’ decisions of whether to remain in Canada or to return home and evaluates the relative importance of their labour market perceptions in light of all of the factors influencing their decisions. Factors such as easy labour market entry, high wages, less stringent immigration policies, careers relevant to the students’ degrees, family ties and relationships with loved ones, discrimination in the labour market, lifestyle and attitudes of governing bodies and prominent community members can all act as push or pull factors in Canada, the host country, or the students’ countries of origin. These factors influence the students’ decisions of whether they should remain in Canada to work or return home. However, results support the conclusion that labour market perceptions are the most significant factors in students’ decision making.
/ Master of Arts (MA)

A ROBUST DIGITAL WIRELESS LINK FOR TACTICAL UAV’S

Takacs, Edward, Durso, Christopher M., Dirdo, David 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2005 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-First Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 24-27, 2005 / Riviera Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / A conventionally designed radio frequency amplifier operated in its linear region exhibits low DC to RF conversion efficiency. Typically, for a power amplifier designed for digital modulation applications, the amplifier is operated “backed-off” from its P1dB point by a factor of 10 or -10 dB. The typical linear amplifier is biased for either Class A or Class A/B operation depending on the acceptable design trade-offs between efficiency and linearity between these two methods. A novel design approach to increasing the efficiency of a linear RF power amplifier using a modified Odd-Way Doherty technique is presented in this paper. The design was simulated, built and then tested. The design yields improvements in efficiency and linearity.

Active Fluid Borne Noise Reduction for Aviation Hydraulic Pumps

Waitschat, Arne, Thielecke, Frank, Behr, Robert M., Heise, Ulrich 27 April 2016 (has links) (PDF)
The aviation environment holds challenging application constraints for efficient hydraulic system noise reduction devices. Besides strong limits on component weight and size, high safety and reliability standards demand simple solutions. Hence, basic silencers like inline expansion chambers and Helmholtz-Resonators are state-of-the-art aboard commercial aircrafts. Unfortunately, they do not meet today’s noise attenuation aims regarding passenger comfort and equipment durability. Significant attenuation performance is expected from active concepts that generate anti-phase noise. However, such concepts remain a long term approach unless related costs, e.g. due to additional power allocation and real-time control equipment can be avoided. In this paper an active fluid borne noise attenuation concept is discussed that accounts for the mentioned constraints. An aircraft hydraulic pump is considered as main noise source. The active attenuator is an in-house rotary valve design. The basic feature is a known direct shaft coupling principle of pump and rotary valve, so no speed/ frequency control of the valve and no separate power supply are required. The common-shaft principle is further simplified here and proposed as integral feature of future “smart pumps”.

Funnel Vision

Grainger, David 01 January 2008 (has links)
This paper will talk about the videos and sculptural installation in my thesis exhibition. Shooting videos outside of the studio developed into a project overarching any individual video or its particular signs. Thus, this paper will focus on the video project with examples that follow a timeline of development, rather than the actual 6 videos on display in the exhibit. The two-part sculpture "Deer in the Headlights" is created in the context of these videos, and coexists with them in a specific architectural space. This space, as well as the clichéd meaning of the deer's gaze, have a relation to the title of the show.
