Novel Quadruple-mode, Dual-mode and Dual-band Dielectric Resonator Filters and MultiplexersMemarian, Mohammad January 2009 (has links)
Dielectric resonators offer high-Q (low loss) characteristics which make them ideal for filters with narrow bandwidth and low insertion loss specifications. They are mainly used in satellite and wireless system applications. Such applications desire the highest performance filters with the lowest amount of size and mass, which has been the main motivation for size reduction techniques invented over the past three decades for these filters. In addition with the emergence of different communication system technologies, several bands are now required to be supported by a single front-end, calling for emergence and development of dual-band and multi-band filters. To date few work has been done in the area of dual-band dielectric resonator filters. Dielectric resonators filters are important components in many communication systems, when a group of such filters are brought together to perform multiplexing of RF channels. These multiplexer systems tend to be fairly complex and bulky in design, and there is strong desire to reduce their size and mass to the maximum extent possible.
Novel quadruple-mode, dual-mode, and dual-band filters as well multiplexers are presented in this thesis. The first ever quadruple-mode dielectric resonator filter using the simple cylinder structure is reported in this work. A cylindrical dielectric resonator sized appropriately in terms of its diameter and height is shown to operate as a quadruple-mode resonator, which is achieved by having two mode pairs of the structure resonate at the same frequency. Single-cavity, quad-mode filters and higher order 4n-pole filters are realizable using this quad-mode cylindrical resonator, offering significant size reduction for dielectric resonator filter applications. The structure of the quad-mode cylinder is then simplified by cutting lengthwise along the central axis of the cylinder, to produce a half-cut cylinder suitable for operation in a dual-mode regime. Novel dual-mode, 2n-pole filters are realizable using this half-cut cylinder, by making the two resonances equal in frequency. The dual-mode half-cut filter is shown to be a strong contender for replacing existing dual-mode filters used in satellite and wireless applications, as it offers superior size and mass characteristics.
By making the resonances unequal in frequency, novel dual-band filters and multiplexers are further realizable, by carrying separate frequency bands on different resonant modes of the structure. The first true orthogonal mode dual-band dielectric resonator is presented in this work, using the half-cut structure. Multiplexers are also derived from these dual-band resonators, which greatly reduce size and mass of many-channel multiplexers at the system level, as each two channels are overloaded in one physical branch.
Full control of center frequencies of resonances, input and inter-resonator couplings are achievable, allowing realization of microwave filters with different bandwidth, frequency, and return loss specifications, as well as advanced filtering functions with prescribed transmission zeros. Spurious performance of the half-cut cylinder can also be improved by cutting one or more through-way slots between opposite surfaces of the resonator. Size and mass reduction achieved by using the full and half-cut resonators described in this thesis, provide various levels of size reduction in microwave systems, both device and system level.

Direct Conversion RF Front-End Implementation for Ultra-Wideband (UWB) and GSM/WCDMA Dual-Band Applications in Silicon-Based TechnologiesPark, Yunseo 28 November 2005 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on wideband circuit design and implementation issues up to 10GHz based on the direct conversion architecture in the CMOS and SiGe BiCMOS technologies. The dissertation consists of two parts: One, implementation of a RF front-end receiver for an ultra-wideband system and, two, implementation of a local oscillation (LO) signal for a GSM/WCDMA multiband application. For emerging ultra-wideband (UWB) applications, the key active components in the RF front-end receiver were designed and implemented in 0.18um SiGe BiCMOS process. The design of LNA, which is the critical circuit block for both systems, was analyzed in terms of noise, linearity and group delay variation over an extemely wide bandwidth. Measurements are demonstrated for an energy-thrifty UWB receiver based on an MB-OFDM system covering the full FCC-allowed UWB frequency range.
For multiband applications such as a GSM/WCDMA dual-band application, the design of wideband VCO and various frequency generation blocks are investigated as alternatives for implementation of direct conversion architecture. In order to reduce DC-offset and LO pulling phenomena that degrade performance in a typical direct conversion scheme, an innovative fractional LO signal generator was implemented in a standard CMOS process. A simple analysis is provided for the loop dynamics and operating range of the design as well as for the measured results of the factional LO signal generator.

NOVEL ANTENNAS FOR MOBILE PHONES AND WLAN APPLICATIONSYeh, Shih-Huang 19 April 2003 (has links)
This paper proposes novel antenna designs for cellular phones and WLAN (Wireless LAN) applications. For cellular phones, a dual- frequency PIFA (Planar Inverted-F Antenna) loaded with a chip inductor is constructed. In order to decrease the construction cost, PIFAs without a loading chip inductor for GMS/DCS phones are devised. Besides, a PIFA-monopole antenna for GSM/DCS/PCS is also proposed. For WLAN application, a dual-band PIFA for 2.4/5.8 GHz and a dual-band integrated monopole antenna for 2.4/5.2 GHz are shown. Finally, a novel metal-plate WLAN antenna, having a simple structure and being easy to construct with low cost, is presented.

Dual Band Octagonal Microstrip Patch Antenna Design Method for Energy HarvestingFrancisco Rivera-Abreu (5931200) 16 January 2020 (has links)
A practical method to design dual-band octagonal patch antenna is introduced. The antenna consists of an octagonal patch with a proximity coupling feed designed to radiate at 900 MHz and 1.8 GHz, respectively. The octagonal dual band patch antenna that is designed using the method introduced is then simulated with 3D FEM based electromagnetic simulator. The proposed antenna design can be used to harvest radio frequency (RF) energy from Wi-Fi and widely spread mobile networks. The simulated and analytical results are compared and good agreement is observed.

AOA localization for vehicle-tracking systems using a dual-band sensor arrayAl-Sadoon, Mohammed A.G., Asif, Rameez, Al-Yasir, Yasir I.A., Abd-Alhameed, Raed, Excell, Peter S. 10 January 2021 (has links)
Yes / The issue of asset tracking in dense environments where the performance of the global positioning system (GPS) becomes unavailable or unreliable is addressed. The proposed solution uses a low-profile array of antenna elements (sensors) mounted on a finite conducting ground. A compact-size sensor array of six electrically small dual-band omnidirectional spiral antenna elements was designed as a front end of a tracker to operate in the 402 and 837 MHz spectrum bands. For the lower band, a three-element superposition method is applied to support estimation of the angle of arrival (AOA), whereas all six sensors are employed for the higher band. A low complexity and accurate AOA determination algorithm is proposed, the projection vector (PV), and this is combined with the array mentioned. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is integrated with the PV technique to increase the estimation resolution. The system was found to be suitable for installation on the roof of vehicles to localize the position of assets. The proposed system was tested for the tracking of nonstationary sources, and then two scenarios were investigated using propagation modeling software: outdoor to outdoor and outdoor to indoor. The results confirm that the proposed tracking system works efficiently with a single snapshot. / European Union Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program; 10.13039/501100009928 - Higher Committee for Education Development (HCED), Iraq
