The objective of this work is to study a new methodology for solving problems in condensed matter, in which the particles are strongly coupled, not allowing a standard perturbative treatment. This method, originating from the AdS / CFT (Anti-Sitter / Conformal Field Theory) duality, is being known in the condensed matter community as Holographic Duality. As an application of this theory, the behavior of superconductors was chosen. The holographic duality methodology uses a field theory in a curved space-time. From the associated action it is possible to obtain the equations of motion of the particles involved. Next, the use of the Mathematica-Wolfram software was used to solve the Differential Equations by the Frobenius Method. The obtained results express that the expected values of operators, so-called correlation functions, are very similar to the energy interval curve predicted by the BCS theory as a function of temperature. It is also inferred from the Kubo formula that the numerical results of electrical conductivity clearly indicate an infinite conductivity below a given critical temperature Tc, resulting in a superconductor. / CAPES: 001

Sequent Calculus: A Logic and a Language for Computation and Duality

Downen, Paul 06 September 2017 (has links)
Truth and falsehood, questions and answers, construction and deconstruction; most things come in dual pairs. Duality is a mirror that reveals the new from the old via opposition. This idea appears pervasively in logic, where duality inverts "true" with "false" and "and" with "or." However, even though programming languages are closely connected to logics, this kind of strong duality is not so apparent in practice. Sum types (disjoint tagged unions) and product types (structures) are dual concepts, but in the realm of programming, natural biases obscure their duality. To better understand the role of duality in programming, we shift our perspective. Our approach is based on the Curry-Howard isomorphism which says that programs following a specification are the same as proofs for mathematical theorems. This thesis explores Gentzen's sequent calculus, a logic steeped in duality, as a model for computational duality. By applying the Curry-Howard isomorphism to the sequent calculus, we get a language that combines dual programming concepts as equal opposites: data types found in functional languages are dual to co-data types (interface-based objects) found in object-oriented languages, control flow is dual to information flow, induction is dual to co-induction. This gives a duality-based semantics for reasoning about programs via orthogonality: checking safety and correctness based on a comprehensive test suite. We use the language of the sequent calculus to apply ideas from logic to issues relevant to program compilation. The idea of logical polarity reveals a symmetric basis of primitive programming constructs that can faithfully represent all user-defined data and co-data types. We reflect the lessons learned back into a core language for functional languages, at the cost of symmetry, with the relationship between the sequent calculus and natural deduction. This relationship lets us derive a pure lambda calculus with user-defined data and co-data which we further extend by bringing out the implicit control-flow in functional programs. Explicit control-flow lets us share and name control the same way we share and name data, enabling a direct representation of join points, which are essential for tractable optimization and compilation.

Arts et stratégies du dépassement dans la poésie morale de Francisco de Quevedo / How to Exceed Duality : Art and Strategies in Quevedo's Moral Poetry

Audoubert, Rafaèle 03 December 2010 (has links)
The thesis start with a definition of the concept of "morals" in 17th century Spain and with a definition of moral poetry in Quevedo's work. Preceding the analysis proper, I will define and justify the corpus of texts studied, identify the author's sources of inspiration, define the notions used in the poetical analysis, and finally mention the previous studies on the topic. The aim of this thesis is to show that Quevedo's moral poetry is a coherent system which serves a discourse that is far from unequivocal, but which corresponds to a constant preoccupation : the moral construction of the addressee. This work also focuses on the figure of Alterity, particularly what place it is granted in this poetry, and what its representations implies from the point of viex of writing. Finally, the thesis shows that the moral ideal aimed at in this corpus lies in the complex way in which it exceeds any duality - Good/Evil, Life/Death, Other/Self - to enable man to move towards God and to find salvation. The conclusion illustrates the coherence of the system and of the corpus and proposes arguments meant to question the authorship of some of the sonnets which where recently attricbuted to Quevedo.

This study aimed to produce a didactic text which would help in the study and understanding of Linear Programming Problems (LPP). We seek to reduce the "gap" that exists between the Calculus, Geometry and Linear Algebra in the treatment of such problem using a clear and objective language. Thus, we have included only the proofs of the results that we consider essential. We work with key concepts and definitions involving PPL (optimization, gradient vector, directional derivative, maximum and minimum on a compact set, Lagrange multipliers, space requirement, optimal solution, duality, among others) including wherever possible a contextualization through various applications. We finish this text with the Farkas' Lemma, using simple and logical arguments for their demonstration with the use of calculus and linear algebra / Mestrado / Matematica Aplicada / Mestre em Matemática Aplicada

Duality and optimality in multiobjective optimization

Bot, Radu Ioan 25 June 2003 (has links)
The aim of this work is to make some investigations concerning duality for multiobjective optimization problems. In order to do this we study first the duality for scalar optimization problems by using the conjugacy approach. This allows us to attach three different dual problems to a primal one. We examine the relations between the optimal objective values of the duals and verify, under some appropriate assumptions, the existence of strong duality. Closely related to the strong duality we derive the optimality conditions for each of these three duals. By means of these considerations, we study the duality for two vector optimization problems, namely, a convex multiobjective problem with cone inequality constraints and a special fractional programming problem with linear inequality constraints. To each of these vector problems we associate a scalar primal and study the duality for it. The structure of both scalar duals give us an idea about how to construct a multiobjective dual. The existence of weak and strong duality is also shown. We conclude our investigations by making an analysis over different duality concepts in multiobjective optimization. To a general multiobjective problem with cone inequality constraints we introduce other six different duals for which we prove weak as well as strong duality assertions. Afterwards, we derive some inclusion results for the image sets and, respectively, for the maximal elements sets of the image sets of these problems. Moreover, we show under which conditions they become identical. A general scheme containing the relations between the six multiobjective duals and some other duals mentioned in the literature is derived.

Investigations on electric-magnetic duality in gravity and higher spin theories

Hortner, Sergio 01 October 2015 (has links) (PDF)

String Dualities and Gaugings of Supergravity

Ranjbar Zidehi, Arash 11 July 2018 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis is devoted to various questions connected with duality. It is composed of two parts. The first part discusses some aspects of timelike T-duality. We explore the possibility of compactification of supergravity theories with various signatures(low energy limit of M-theories which are dual under timelike T-dualities) on parallelizable internal seven dimensional (pseudo-)spheres. We show that, beside the standard theory, only one of the dual theories known as M'-theory can admit such a solution. The effective four dimensional theory is non-supersymmetric and due to the presence of torsion the symmetry of seven dimensional (pseudo-)sphere breaks down to Spin(3, 4). In the second part, in an attempt to have a systematic discussion of gaugings in supergravity, we show the isomorphism between the space of local deformations of the appropriate zero coupling limit of the embedding tensor Lagrangian and that of the second-order scalar-vector Lagrangian, describing the bosonic sector of supergravity ignoring gravity, in a chosen duality frame determined by embedding tensors. We analyze the BV-BRST deformation of a class of scalar-vector coupled Lagrangians, which contains supergravity Lagrangians as examples, and find a set of constraints that guarantee the consistency of the deformations of the Lagrangians. We show in principle that for a large class of theories considered in this thesis, the only deformations are those of the Yang-Mills type associated with a subgroup of the rigid symmetries. / Doctorat en Sciences / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished
