Analysisof a DH system in Sörbyskolan : School placed in Gävle

Lopez, Carlos January 2008 (has links)
Electricity and district heating are the most important energy carriers for the residential and service sector in Sweden. Today, district heating supplies about half of the total heating requirement of residential and commercial premises in Sweden. The aim of this paper is the analysis of the heating system of a school, placed in Gävle, Sweden. The heat is delivered to the school by a district heating network. First of all, the Heat Balance must be done, with the purpose of obtain the best knowledge of the present situation in the school. The calculations about the transmission and ventilation losses and the internal heating generated have been showed. After this, the point of view has been focused on the district heating system itself. It is means, the distribution pipe system inside the school. The efficiency and accuracy of the net will be analysed and discussed. Three possible ways to improve the net will be showed. The first of all is the most simple: just take the pipe system and try to reduce the waste heat, the heat losses; the second choice is to make a new connection to the district heating network, joining all the buildings with one connection for each building –five more- instead of only the connection that exists at the moment when this paper was written; the third option seems as a different model of the second, it is means to divide all the school in two bigger parts and make another connection to the district heating network with the purpose of dividing the heating system in two equal parts. Thanks to the heat balance done in the school and in the district heating system, it is possible to know the waste of heat. Mainly, these losses are found in the district heating net. The amount of waste is around 17%, a really high amount of energy wasted, which must be reduced. According to the data of the company Gävle Energy, the waste in old buildings like the school which is under study in this paper, usually is between 15% and 20% of the supplied energy. So, this showed the accuracy of the method used to make this paper. According to the possibilities of improvement, it will depend on the ultimate decision of the Gävle Fastigheter, company which owns the school, to choose the way that could be better for their own interest. However, in this paper the prices and possible pay-back times are showed, in order to provide better information. Although the best solution has a total cost of 1750000 Swedish crowns (186289 €) and a pay-back time of 21 years –talking about making five new connections-, another cheaper possibility is also commented: improving the isolation of the pipe system, with a cost of 549000 SEK (58441 €) and a pay-back time near 7 years.

"Börja i barndomen" Distriktssköterskans roll i det förebyggande arbetet av övervikt och fetma

Johansson, Anna, Tegberg, Kristina January 2008 (has links)
Overweight and obesity in children is an extensive and accelerating problem in the western world. The risk factors for overweight are well- known and well-documented. Focus should lie in the prophylactic work in order to prevent overweight and obesity in preschool children. The aim of our study has been to highlight the role of the district nurse in her/his work to prevent overweight and obesity in preschool children. The study was carried out through studies as a literature review. In order to support the parents and taking their circumstances and conditions into consideration, it was considered very important that the district nurse paid attention to the view of the parents on the weight of their child. Parents were considered to have an important role in giving their children healthy eating habits. The attitude of the district nurse was relevant as to how she/he treated the overweight and how she/he tackled the preventive work. Professional practice and training within the field were important factors in making the district nurse succeed in her/his work to prevent overweight and obesity in children. Lack of time and lack of parental commitment and attitude were the main reasons for limiting the district nurse in her work to prevent overweight and obesity in children. Personnel within the primary care should supervise and coordinate health promoting measures in order to prevent overweight and obesity in children. The district nurse plays a unique part in influencing the parents very early on in their children’s life by arranging regular and repeated visits to the child welfare center. The basis for a successful work by the district nurse is training and the fact that she is made aware of her own attitudes towards overweight. More research is imperative to support and develop guidelines for preventing overweight and obesity in children.

Rokiškio rajono kaimo gyventojų kaita XX amžiuje ir socialinės pasekmės / The change of Rokiskio district villagers in XX age and social consequences

Kemeklis, Mindaugas 14 June 2006 (has links)
Lithuanian villages were created moustly in beautiful places: near to the lake, river or forest. But time was flying… Little by little Lithuanian villages were disapearing, at firstvillagers and then deep traditions of our grandparents. The topic „The change of Rokiskio district villagers in XX age and social consequences“ was chosen not by chance: obsolescent villages and fast diminution of inhabitants let to look to changes of villages, reasons of diminution and future perspectives more deeply. During the years 1923- 2001 an administrative separation of Rokiskio district, that did an influence on the number of villages and on the number of villagers had changed. A part of villages were given to other districts. During 78 years number of villages fell down from 1220 till 555. Certainly, in the different places of monitors the number of villages dissapeared, is not the same. If we value this expression by per cents, this situation will look menacingly: diminution of villages hesitates from 35 till 60,9 per cents. It is not strange, that the biggest losses suffered areas of monitors, that had the highest number of villages: Rokiskio kaimiskoji, Juodupes and Obeliu- it lost almost 2/3 of all villages. And the number of villagers felldown most more than the number of villages- from 60554 till 21231. When we go through areas of monitors, we can see a lot of desolated homesteads, destroyed farms- because the number of villagers had fallen 60 per cents. The main reasons of... [to full text]

A Spatial Analytic Method for the Preliminary Design of a District Energy Network Utilizing Waste Heat in Mixed-Use Jurisdictions

Ronn, Dave 25 April 2011 (has links)
A city’s characteristics of mixed-use zoning, diverse built form, high-density development, and residual heat generation by urban processes, present potential for optimizing the thermal energy end-use of certain waste streams. A method was developed to identify sources of waste thermal energy and heat demand clusters in a mixed-use jurisdiction and design a preliminary primary network of a district heating system based on these waste heat sources. The method applies systems analysis, energy potential mapping (GIS spatial analysis) and network optimization (linear programming) techniques. The method is implemented using a case study of data for peninsular Halifax. Finally, the method and implementation’s influence on climate change (i.e. a reduction in GHG emissions) and energy security, two central themes of this research, are discussed.

Implementing district energy systems : municipal approaches to overcoming barriers

Simpson, Kevin George 11 March 2013 (has links)
Climate change and energy security are issues facing municipalities throughout the world. Efficient, resilient, sustainable, community-based energy systems, such as district energy systems (DES), fuelled mostly by renewables, are an important tool for addressing both climate change and energy security at the municipal level. In spite of their benefits, DES are not widely adopted in Canada (CDEA, 2011). This is due to the complex nature of the barriers which project proponents face. This thesis examines the experience of the City of Prince George in adopting and implementing the Downtown DES. Using a case study methodology, data was collected through a review of relevant municipal documents and a series of semi-structured, open-ended interviews. A thematic analysis revealed unexpected barriers related to lack of adequate public consultation and negative perceptions regarding biomass as a fuel for the DES. These `lessons learned' were then developed into recommendations for other municipalities considering DES.

The ecology and propagation of Vatovaea pseudolablab : a wild food plant of the Maasai in Kajiado District, Kenya

Arnott, Sheri-Lee C. January 1998 (has links)
The goal of this study was to further understanding of the ecology and propagation of an important wild food resource (Vatovaea pseudolablab (Harms.) Gillett of the community of Loodokilani, Kajiado District Kenya and by extension, contribute to its sustainable use. / Vatovaea pseudolablab is found in occasional, yet distinct patches in Lookidalani and these patches may be associated with a particular soil-water regime. The associated soils are moderately developed, dark brown (7.5YR 3/2, Munsell) clayloams, with small (5.61 mm), angular blocky aggregates. The patches were moderately covered (30%) with medium-sized stones (9.5 cm). / Woody and leafy cuttings from wild stock were collected and rooted easily using a minimum of technological inputs. Roofing percentages were better under the hotter and drier conditions in Kilinito. / In conclusion, the data gathered for this study were analyzed within the framework developed by Amold et al. (1985) for evaluating sustainable use strategies for indigenous plants. The low densities of V. pseudolablab found within the patches coupled with the high grazing pressure make it unlikely that wild resources could sustain higher usage. / This study highlights some of the greatest methodological problems facing ethnobotanical, and related, research in pastoral communities. More attention should be directed towards developing research methodologies to further our understanding of wild food plants in pastoral communities.

Examining women's experiences of an economic empowerment project : a case study of women participants in Teya-teyaneng craft projects of Berea District.

Makoko, Reboetsoe Rosemary. January 2012 (has links)
In the UNDP Report of 2008, promotion of gender equality and women empowerment, Millennium Development Goal (MDG3), has been declared not only as the main developmental objective but also a fundamental mode of attaining the entire MDGs. This study examines women’s experiences of economic empowerment projects in the era of escalating female household heading and relentless poverty in Lesotho. It particularly focuses on women participating in crafts projects initiated for income generation, in the context of gendered spaces. A growing body of literature asserts that Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) is a potential route out of abject poverty, especially for the economically marginalised women in Female- Headed Households (FHH). A case study focusing on women participants in Teya-teyaneng crafts of Berea district in Lesotho was carried out. Semi-structured interviews were employed to explore the potential of participation to yield positively for empowerment in the scenario of informal economy. Findings from the two units within the single case utilised revealed that empowerment remains to be one of the entangled processes of economic development. It is highly subjected to social, political and economic procedures operating in a country. The study further revealed that economic empowerment of women participating in income generating projects is considerably constrained by the patriarchal and globalised economic set ups that women operate within. The case of Elelloang Basali illuminated that adherence to contemporary strategies of economic empowerment is a beneficial ingredient, contrary to the operations of Setsoto Design. Recommendations ultimately forwarded highlight the significance of macro-economic policy to pay attention to the assertion that WEE is not merely a path out of poverty but an intrinsic entity of employment-led-growth. This also hints on policy for broad-based growth that can be countercyclical for the economy of the country. The paper serves to articulate a dire need for shift from reluctance to responsiveness for those with political and economic will power. / Thesis (M.Dev.Studies)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2012.
