Aspects of Flexographic Print Quality and Relationship to some Printing Parameters

Johnson, Johanna January 2008 (has links)
Flexographic printing is a common printing method in the packaging field. The printing method is characterized primarily by the flexible printing plate and the low viscosity inks which make it suitable for use on almost any substrate. The object of this study was to obtain further knowledge of the some important mechanisms of flexographic printing and how they influence the print quality. The thesis deals with printing primarily on board and liner but also on newsprint with water-borne ink using a full-scale flexographic central impression (CI) printing press. Several printing trials have been performed with a focus on the chemical interaction between the ink and substrate and the physical contact between the ink-covered printing plate and the substrate. Multicolour printing exposes the substrate to water from the water-containing ink. The emphasis was to investigate the relation between print quality and water-uptake of the paper surface with heat and water. Printing trials was carried out on substrates possessing a hydrophobic, and also a rather hydrophilic surface using a regular commercial water-borne ink. The favorable effect which water or surfactant solution had on the hydrophobic substrate with regard to print mottle could depend on its surface compressibility in combination with the hydrophobic nature of its surface that could affect the wetting properties. Conventional printing involves physical contact between plate and ink and between ink and substrate. A method for measuring the dynamic nip pressure using thin load cells is presented. Print quality was influenced by the plate material. A correction procedure taking into account the size of the sensor was developed in order to estimate the maximum dynamic pressure in the printing nip. An attempt was made to identify essential mechanical and chemical parameters, and also geometrical properties of the plate that affected print quality. Laboratory printing trials were carried out and a multivariate analysis was applied for evaluation of print quality data. The impact of the plate properties on print quality was evident. The essential properties of the plate that influence print quality were the small-scale roughness and long-scale roughness.

The poetics of making

Ho, King Tong Unknown Date (has links)
This is a practice-led research project that seeks to explore the cross-cultural aesthetics and conceptual ideas of an art project. I position myself as an art practitioner who intends to apply the Western modes of technological advancement of digital imaging and ink jet technologies to the substrates used by traditional Chinese artists for ink painting and calligraphy, usually called Xuan Zhi [宣紙]. Through this process, the aesthetics and conceptual ideas of both cultures will be explored, examined, analysed and interrogated for the potential development of a new aesthetics in the context of digital art. There are three major components in this research project; a creative document in the form of a collection of artwork, an exegesis and a collection of documentation. The creative document will be a body of visual image-based artwork that includes a series of collateral works from the ongoing research and practice of the project. It is the negotiated output of a potentially new aesthetics in digital art, specifically in the context of digital still imaging and digital printmaking. The exegesis is an analytical and critical commentary that places the creative document in relevant theoretical, philosophical, cultural and historical contexts. The documentation is a collection of the ongoing empirical practice of ink jet technology on Xuan Zhi. The visual physical form of both the exegesis and the documentation are also included as part of the creative document. These three components together form a unity and are presented as artefacts to represent the main focus of the research - the Poetics of Making.

Formulation et impression d'encres pour l'élaboration par impression jet d'encre de modules photovoltaïques organiques / Ink formulation and printing for the elaboration by inkjet printing of organic photovoltaic modules

Chaperon, Mélodie 22 November 2016 (has links)
These developments allow to scale up the technologies developed at the laboratory scale to the industrial one. For the elaboration of multilayered architectures, inkjet printing method is the ideal way to produce custom-made devices which could be also flexible and potentially low cost. The purpose of this PhD was to understand and to master the influence of ink formulation on the printing process, from the ejection step to the photovoltaic performance characterization of the printed layers. Parameters improving the ejection quality were first determined followed by those making the wettability easier. The inks have been then formulated to ensure that their physicochemical properties meet the aforementioned requirements. These new formulations enabled to optimize the quality of the ejection quality and to ensure uniform printed layers compatible with their integration in OPV devices. After optimization of the printing strategies, the obtained layers proved to be as efficient as those made by spin coating process (reference process at laboratory scale). The advances reached within in this work, in terms of formulations and processes, contributed to the improvement of each inkjet printed layers of the device. Furthermore, the methodology developed here could be applied in the near future either to other photovoltaic technologies and to organic printed electronics.

Synthèse et formulation d'encres électrophorétiques pour le papier électronique / Synthesis and formulation of electrophoretic ink for electronic paper applications

Mirbel, Déborah 17 December 2015 (has links)
In this work, the synthesis and the electrophoretic behavior of hybrid particlesdispersed in apolar media, in the presence of a new charge control agent, the tridodecylamine, have been investigated for electronic paper applications. In order to control and to understandinteractions present in the system, the tridodecyamine was studied in the apolar medium. It hasbeen observed that this surfactant, solubilized in a non-polar medium, has a critical micelleconcentration of approximately 250mM and creates charges in the medium. Then, the synthesisby polymerisation in dispersion or by using a sol-gel process gave rise to the creation ofinorganic, polymeric or raspberry type hybrid particles, stable in non-polar media. Theirelectrophoretic behavior in the presence of tridodecylamine was elucidated. Acid-baseinteractions between hydroxyl groups from inorganic material surfaces and surfactant led to thecreation of negatively charged hybrid particles. These particles were integrated into anelectrophoretic ink and tested into an innovative electrophoretic device where theelectrophoresis is monitored via a ferroelectric polymer.

The Rorsach as an Indicator of Intelligence in Seventh-Grade Children

Wolf, Martin G. 06 1900 (has links)
This study was undertaken in the belief that a greater relationship would be revealed between the Rorschach and intelligence test scores if the factors in the Rorschach which have been found in the past to be related to intelligence could be compared as a whole with scores obtained on mental tests. The purpose of this study was to determine whether it could be demonstrated that a higher degree of relationship does exist between several of the Rorschach factors, considered as a whole, and intelligence as revealed by the California Test of Mental Maturity.

Jucélia Cabral Mendonça 11 April 2003 (has links)
Paper represents about 25% of all solid waste presented in sanitary landfills. Newspaper can represent up to 50% of all the discarded paper and is found mostly printed. The printing ink can be toxic to the microorganisms that have anaerobic digestion. The main objective of the present dissertation was to evaluate the influence of this ink on the anaerobic digestion of newspaper. It also intends to collaborate for a better comprehension of characterization, toxicity, biodegradability and processes of treatment of solid wastes. The research was developed in two stages. First the efficiency of four inoculum was evaluated: they were sludge of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) treating the sanitary sewage of Piracicaba city - SP (LU); granulated sludge of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) originated form the sewage treatment of Avícola Dacar - Ltda, located in Tietê city - SP (LA); leachate from sanitary landfill of Jaboticabal city - SP, with 11 months of operation (PI) and leachate from experimental sanitary landfill in São Carlos city - SP, with 11 years of operation (PII). This stage of work allowed choosing the inoculum from the sanitary landfill of Jaboticabal as it showed greater efficiency in the anaerobic digestion of newspaper. This inoculum was used to inoculate the reactors in the second stage of the work, aiming to evaluate the influence of the printing ink on the anaerobic digestion of the newspaper, in four reactors fed with non-printed newspaper (JNI), printed newspaper with black ink (JIP), printed newspaper with colorful ink (JIC) and reactor of control (B). The printing ink did not show to be inhibitory to the anaerobic process, as the observed digestions were almost similar for the reactors fed with printed and non-printed newspaper.

Ink / Ink

Vomelová, Lenka Unknown Date (has links)
-ink- ink is a small independent publishing house, that is aiming to publish student-written literature with graphic design and illustrations made by young designers and artists. Main goal of the publishing house is to support, execute and spread projects of young, not yet estabilished authors and artists and thus develop the contemporary art scene. The visual identity of the publishing house is left open, it is going to be created in time by the books that are going to be published by ink. The logo is often used as a background to posters, or a stamp over photographs. I'm letting the content to speak for it's brand, not the logo. I created business cards, bookmarks, a stamp, wrapping papers that are used for parcels as well as a background for posters, and stickers. Novel Devil Novel Devil is a first book published by ink. Author of the book is Jan Smutný, recent graduate of Faculty of Fine arts in Brno. Illustration and the overall design of the book are made by me. The design is inspired by gothic books written in textura or bastarda and illustrated with woodcuts. My aim was to create a book clearly referencing this visuality, but not a „retro“ or a historicist book. I tried to create a classical book with a modern twist. That's why I chose new, modern typefaces Enigma and Lapture and the illustrations are just vector lines. Because of the theme I work only with black and and background white colour. The book was published in 200 copies.

Printed Antennas on Paper

Moossavi, Reza January 2013 (has links)
Ink-jet printing (IJP) using conductive inks, has gained the attention of scientistsand researchers during the past decades. Solar Cells (SCs), Radio FrequencyIdentication (RFID), E-papers and antennas are only some of the applicationsfor which IJP is being applied. IJP facilitates printing complex antenna structureswith a good resolution. The use of the IJP process is compatible with devicefabrication on unusual substrates such as paper, polymer lms (Polyethylenenaphthalate (PEN), Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), Polyimide (PI)), textiles, etc at low temperature. The aim of this study is to design and fabricate antennason paper substrates capable of operating at 2.4 GHz via printing technique.Simulation and experimental studies have been presented for microstrip patchantenna and dipole antenna using Itoh's balun.
