Artrodese da articulação interfalangeana proximal de equinos: avaliação biomecânica comparativa da técnica com placa de compressão dinâmica de 4,5mm e três orifícios, com dois parafusos transarticulares oblíquos de 5,5mm e técnica com placa \"Y\" de compressão bloqueada de 5,0mm e sete orifícios / Arthrodesis of the equine proximal interphalangeal joint: a biomechanical comparison of one 3-Hole 4.5-mm Narrow Dynamic Compression Plate with two 5.5mm oblique cortex screws technique and one 7-Hole 5.0mm \"Y\" locking compression plate technique

Latorre, Carlos Adolfo Salazar 25 June 2013 (has links)
Lameness is the main cause of sport horses\' owners consulting equine veterinarians and one of the highest cause to send these animals to the reference hospitals. Long bones and joint fractures have the lesser rate of success, consequence of the hight cost of the treatment and poor prognosis. Understanding as success the return of the horse to previous athletic performance or at least to have useful life. The proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) is clinically important because the injuries that involve it may threaten the horses sport life or its usefulness. The objective of this study was to compare the biomechanical properties of two PIPJ arthrodesis techniques using 4.5mm dynamic compression plate (DCP) in conjunction with two oblique abaxial transarticular 5.5mm cortical screws inserted in lag fashion and 5.0mm Y locking compression plate (Y-LCP) with unicortical locking screws and one axial transarticular 4.5mm cortex screw inserted in lag fashion through the midle plate hole. It was used twelve cadaveric adult equine forelimbs from the first phalanx to the foot. After full-limb preparations, each forelimb pair was randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups. Constructs were submited to axial compression single cycle to failure biomechanical testing. The failure of the screws, plate or bone, and the force at wich it happened was evaluated. There were no significant differences in construct stiffness or max force when loaded to failure, between the DCP and Y-LCP treatment groups. Even though there was no construct stiffness diffrences between the two techniques, the Y-LCP technique provided the possibility of a less invasive procedure with a shorter surgical time. In conclusion, the biomechanical properties of both fixation techniques (DCP and Y-LCP) are equivalent under the test conditions used.

Neves Junior, Alex 29 September 2006 (has links)
The main objective of the present work is to establish guidelines for the use of solid finite elements in the modeling of thin structures submitted to bending. Ensaios biomecânicos de placas bloqueadas: comportamento dos parafusos bloqueados em diferentes angulações submetidos ao teste de arrancamento e influência do preenchimento dos orifícios médios na resistência ao teste de flexão / Biomechanical analysis of locking plates evaluating the influence of screw angulation and screw placement in center position of bridging plate

Tatiana Casimiro Mariani 16 November 2010 (has links)
The feasibility of locking plates and their biomechanical advantages in comminuted fractures are well known. The objective of this study was to evaluate different locking plate´s configurations submitted to a four point´s flexion test and pull out test. The flexion test evaluated the influence of screws in center position in bridging plate, the pull out test compared relative to pull out strength locking plates using parallel locking screws or angulated locking screws. For each biomechanical assay two groups of ten test materials were formed. The results found no statistical differences relative to flexion resistance in the groups with and without central screws. Relative to pull out test the group with angulated screws showed higher values of maximum pull out strength when compared with the perpendicular screws, the data were statistically significant. We concluded that there was no improvement in the resistance of bridging plate with the use of central screws, but the use of angulated screws showed a greater resistance to pull out when compared to parallel screws.

Biomechanical analysis of proximal humerus plate for spatial subchondral support

Jabran, Ali January 2017 (has links)
Proximal humerus fractures are the third most common fractures in the over-65 patient population and their stable fixation remains a key challenge in orthopaedic and trauma surgery. While Open Reduction Internal Fixation by plate has become a well-known treatment modality in the last few decades, clinical studies associate high complication rate with its use. The overall aim of this project was to create a computer-aided design framework for proximal humerus plates using a validated subject-specific humerus-plate finite element model. The framework consisted of three stages: (1) reverse engineering of bone and plate geometry, (2) creation and validation of a finite element model simulating the in vitro testing of the bone-implant construct and (3) parametric optimisation study of implant design using this model. In vitro biomechanical tests were conducted to not only compare the mechanical performance of three key commercially available proximal humerus plates (S3-, Fx- and PHILOS plate) but also the effect of different screw zones. Sixty-five humeri specimens with two-part surgical neck fractures were treated and grouped based on their different screw configurations. Extension, flexion, varus and valgus bending were applied in the cantilever fashion in the elastic tests whereas only varus bending was applied in the plastic tests. The load required to apply 5 mm displacement was measured to determine bone-plate construct stiffness. The S3 plate yielded the stiffest constructs and while the removal of the inferomedial support had the most impact on varus bending stiffness, type of medial support was important: inferomedial screws in the Fx plate achieved higher bending stiffness than blade insertion. Stability of constructs treated with the plate was an interplay of factors such as the plate’s and screws' number, orientation and position. Next, a subject-specific finite element model of the humerus-plate construct was successfully developed that simulated the stiffest of the constructs from the in vitro varus bending tests conducted in this project. The model was validated against the in vitro results. The validated model was then used to perform a parametric optimisation study where the combination of design parameters (height and divergence angle of S3 plate’s inferomedial screws) was determined that achieved optimum bone-plate construct stability (minimum fracture gap change). Out of the 538 designs tested, the optimum design (16o divergence angle and 33o height angle) yielded the lowest fracture gap change (0.156 mm) which was 4.686% lower than the standard finite element model while achieving 5.707% higher varus bending load (54.753 N). The validated model was also used to investigate the issue of using smooth pegs and threaded screws. Twenty-six models with different percentages of screw threading were run to compare their bone-plate construct stiffness. While threading the smooth pegs was found to increase the varus bending stiffness by up to 4.546%, it did not affect all screws equally. Finally, the successful completion of the optimisation study of screw orientation and the clinical investigation promises the implementation of the computational framework for a range of future multi-objective optimisation studies of multiple design parameters especially for the design of implants for other parts of the human body and also for investigations into other clinically relevant questions.

Energy-efficient clock generation for communication and computing systems using injection locking

Ma, Chao 01 October 2014 (has links)
The design of high-performance, high-speed clock generation and distribution becomes challenging in terms of phase noise, jitter and power consumption, due to the fast development of communication and computing systems. Injection locking is a promising clocking technique since it can significantly improve the energy efficiency, suppress the phase noise of the ring oscillator, enable a fast startup and conveniently generate multiple time-interleaved phases. A quasi-linear model of injection-locked ring oscillator (ILRO) is utilized to mathematically formulate the frequency and time domain characteristics of the system, as well as the phase noise shaping and jitter tracking behavior. The settling behavior of ILRO is also exploited and shows a strong dependence on the locking range and the initial phase difference of the injected and the resultant oscillation signals. A forwarded-clock synchronization based on injection locking is designed for a 10 Gb/s photonic interconnect according to the specific features of optical links. A single clock recovery can be used for all the four channels, resulting in a large amount of power and area saving. The applications of sub-harmonic and super-harmonic injection locking in wireless communications for frequency multiplying and division are also discussed. / Graduation date: 2013 / Access restricted to the OSU Community at author's request from Oct. 1, 2012 - Oct. 1, 2014

Design and investigation of the emission dynamics of a mode-locked SBS-laser oscillator

Kappe, Philip January 2006 (has links)
The primary objective of this work was to develop a laser source for fundamental investigations in the field of laser – materials interactions. In particular it is supposed to facilitate the study of the influence of the temporal energy distribution such as the interaction between adjacent pulses on ablation processes. Therefore, the aim was to design a laser with a highly flexible and easily controllable temporal energy distribution. The laser to meet these demands is an SBS-laser with optional active mode-locking. The nonlinear reflectivity of the SBS-mirror leads to a passive Q-switching and issues ns-pulse bursts with µs spacing. The pulse train parameters such as pulse duration, pulse spacing, pulse energy and number of pulses within a burst can be individually adjusted by tuning the pump parameters and the starting conditions for the laser. Another feature of the SBS-reflection is phase conjugation, which leads to an excellent beam quality thanks to the compensation of phase distortions. Transverse fundamental mode operation and a beam quality better than 1.4 times diffraction limited can be maintained for average output powers of up to 10 W. In addition to the dynamics on a ns-timescale described above, a defined splitting up of each ns-pulse into a train of ps-pulses can be achieved by additional active mode-locking. This twofold temporal focussing of the intensity leads to single pulse energies of up to 2 mJ at pulse durations of approximately 400 ps which corresponds to a pulse peak power of 5 MW. While the pulse duration is of the same order of magnitude as those of other passively Q-switched lasers with simultaneous mode-locking, the pulse energy and pulse peak power exceeds the values of these systems found in the literature by an order of magnitude. To the best of my knowledge the laser presented here is the first implementation of a self-starting mode-locked SBS-laser oscillator. In order to gain a better understanding and control of the transient output of the laser two complementary numerical models were developed. The first is based on laser rate equations which are solved for each laser mode individually while the mode-locking dynamics are calculated from the resultant transient spectrum. The rate equations consider the mean photon densities in the resonator, therefore the propagation of the light inside the resonator is not properly displayed. The second model, in contrast, introduces a spatial resolution of the resonator and hence the propagation inside the resonator can more accurately be considered. Consequently, a mismatch between the loss modulation frequency and the resonator round trip time can be conceived. The model calculates all dynamics in the time domain and therefore the spectral influences such as the Stokes-shift have to be neglected. Both models achieve an excellent reproduction of the ns-dynamics that are generated by the SBS-Q-switch. Separately, each model fails to reproduce all aspects of the ps-dynamics of the SBS-laser in detail. This can be attributed to the complexity of the numerous physical processes involved in this system. But thanks to their complementary nature they provide a very useful tool for investigating the various influences on the dynamics of the mode-locked SBS-laser individually. These aspects can eventually be recomposed to give a complete picture of the mechanisms which govern the output dynamics. Among the aspects under scrutiny were in particular the start resonator quality which determines the starting condition for the SBS-Q-switch, the modulation depth of the AOM and the phonon lifetime as well as the Brillouin-frequency of the SBS-medium. The numerical simulations and the experiments have opened several doors inviting further investigations and promising a potential for further improvement of the experimental results: The results of the simulations in combination with the experimental results which determined the starting conditions for the simulations leave no doubt that the bandwidth generation can primarily be attributed to the SBS-Stokes-shift during the buildup of the Q-switch pulse. For each resonator round trip, bandwidth is generated by shifting a part of the revolving light in frequency. The magnitude of the frequency shift corresponds to the Brillouin-frequency which is a constant of the SBS material and amounts in the case of SF6 to 240 MHz. The modulation of the AOM merely provides an exchange of population between spectrally adjacent modes and therefore diminishes a modulation in the spectrum. By use of a material with a Brillouin-frequency in the GHz range the bandwidth generation can be considerably accelerated thereby shortening the pulse duration. Also, it was demonstrated that yet another nonlinear effect of the SBS can be exploited: If the phonon lifetime is short compared to the resonator round trip time we obtain a modulation in the SBS-reflectivity that supports the modulation of the AOM. The application of an external optical feedback by a conventional mirror turns out to be an alternative to the AOM in synchronizing the longitudinal resonator modes. The interesting feature about this system is that it is ― although highly complex in the physical processes and the temporal output dynamics ― very simple and inexpensive from a technical point of view. No expensive modulators and no control electronics are necessary. Finally, the numerical models constitute a powerful tool for the investigation of emission dynamics of complex laser systems on arbitrary timescales and can also display the spectral evolution of the laser output. In particular it could be demonstrated that differences in the results of the complementary models vanish for systems of lesser complexity.

"Mesh-free methods and finite elements: friend or foe?"

Fernàndez Méndez, Sònia 16 November 2001 (has links)
This thesis is devoted to the numerical analysis of mesh-free methods and, in particular, to the study of the possible advantages of the EFG (Element Free Galerkin) mesh-free method against the well-known FE (Finite Element) method. More precisely, the EFG method and the FE method behavior are compared in two particular interesting problems: (1) analysis of volumetric locking in mechanical problems and (2) accurate resolution of transient convection dominated problems. In both cases the good properties and possibilities of mesh-free methods become apparent. However, in several situations the FE method is still more competitive: for instance, the computation of the FE shape functions and its integrals are less costly, and essential boundary conditions can be easily imposed. Thus, in order to take advantage of the good properties of both methods, a mixed interpolation combining FE and EFG is proposed. This formulation can be applied in two useful situations: (i) enrichment of finite elements with EFG, and (ii) coupling of FE and EFG. An a priori error estimate for the first one is presented and proved. Several examples show the applicability of the mixed interpolation in adaptive computations. Utveckling av rattstång med övre teleskopfunktion / Development of steering column with upper telescopic function

Josefsson, Johannes, Lundberg, Marcus January 2009 (has links)
In this report the project team describes the outcome of the course degree project 15 ECTS (C level) performed at the program of mechanical engineering, targeted product development and design, at Jönköping University. The degree project has been carried out in cooperation with Kongsberg Power Products Systems AB in Ljungsarp. The aim was to develop a new type of upper telescopic function to the Kongsberg modular system for adjustable steering columns. The starting point of the project was to create a more ergonomic driver's environment, as Kongsberg’s customers and the market for slow vehicles are increasingly demanding. The requirements placed on the project consisted in the main part of the forces that construction would meet, and the axial extension of the steering column. To structure the work a product development methodology from the book The Mechanical Design Process by David G. Ullman has been used. The project has resulted in a concept that solves Kongsberg's demands for improved driver ergonomics.

On Decoupling Concurrency Control from Recovery in Database Repositories

Yu, Heng January 2005 (has links)
We report on initial research on the concurrency control issue of compiled database applications. Such applications have a repository style of architecture in which a collection of software modules operate on a common database in terms of a set of predefined transaction types, an architectural view that is useful for the deployment of database technology to embedded control programs. We focus on decoupling concurrency control from any functionality relating to recovery. Such decoupling facilitates the compile-time query optimization. <br /><br /> Because it is the possibility of transaction aborts for deadlock resolution that makes the recovery subsystem necessary, we choose the deadlock-free tree locking (TL) scheme for our purpose. With the knowledge of transaction workload, efficacious lock trees for runtime control can be determined at compile-time. We have designed compile-time algorithms to generate the lock tree and other relevant data structures, and runtime locking/unlocking algorithms based on such structures. We have further explored how to insert the lock steps into the transaction types at compile time. <br /><br /> To conduct our simulation experiments to evaluate the performance of TL, we have designed two workloads. The first one is from the OLTP benchmark TPC-C. The second is from the open-source operating system MINIX. Our experimental results show TL produces better throughput than the traditional two-phase locking (2PL) when the transactions are write-only; and for main-memory data, TL performs comparably to 2PL even in workloads with many reads.
