The Construction of Early Modernity in Spanish Film

Zarate Casanova, Miguel Angel 2011 August 1900 (has links)
The presence of early modern Spanish history in Spanish film has received only limited scholarly attention. The entire group of Spanish films dealing with the Spanish early modern era has never been placed under study by any overarching research. This dissertation reframes the evolution of the cinematographic representation of the Spanish past as it studies the mechanisms employed by Spanish films in representing an essential part of Spanish past: early modernity. Studied are 19 period films that group themselves around some of most representative subjects in early modernity: the Monarchy and Nobility, and the Spanish Inquisition. Studied also is the most expensive Spanish period film, Alatriste (2006). Through the analysis of artistic, industrial, historiographical, and political elements, and the deconstruction of the historical message of each film, as well as the analysis of their reception, it is clear that Spanish period films set in early modernity tell us as much about the time of their making and the shaping of the historical consciousness of Spain as they do about the era that they represent on screen.

Krev, čest a hrůza. Reprezentace pevnostní války v obléhacích denících britských obránců Bergen-op-zoom z roku 1747 / Blood, honour and horror. Representations of siege warfare in siege journals of British defenders of Bergen-op-zoom in 1747.

Wohlmuth, Petr January 2015 (has links)
This Master's degree thesis, named Blood, honour and horror. Representations of siege warfare in journals of British defenders of Bergen-op-zoom in 1747, adheres at specific genre of historical anthropology of war and military. It poses questions regarding ana-lysis of contemporary culture of war and its individual variables, their interdependence and changing configuration during the siege of Bergen-op-zoom in 1747, during culmination point of War of Austrian Succession. Meaning of this text consists of an effort to discover alternative way of treating historical sources and to depart traditional conservative methods of analyzing the war conflict using national or confessional military stereotypes, essential features of key actors or theoretical normative of military science. The text comes to conclusion that most irregular and dramatic character of the siege of Bergen-op-zoom was primarily caused by profound misunderstanding between defenders and attackers regarding culture of war, especially acceptable definition of military honour and of legitimate combat techniques. [en] OVERSEAS REPUBLICS: IDEAL SOCIETIES IN EARLY MODERN ENGLAND / [pt] REPÚBLICAS DO ALÉM-MAR: SOCIEDADES IDEAIS NA INGLATERRA DA PRIMEIRA MODERNIDADE

VICTOR DE SA MACHADO 22 June 2020 (has links)
[en] The present work proposes to discuss The Commonwealth of Oceana (1656) by James Harrington, placing the work within the framework of a political literature dedicated to the constitution of ideal societies in Early Modernity England. It treats the concepts of ideal society and utopia while engaging in a reading of Thomas More s Utopia (1516). Both Utopia and Oceana are fictional republics, which, inspired by Classical Antiquity, present a free society with broad popular participation and founded on virtuous laws. These texts are separated by a time gap of more than a century and also written under different political contexts. Nonetheless, the shrewd political imaginations that made them stand out. Thus, this dissertation analyzes the differences and similarities both in the forms and the functions of these works, highlighting the transformations that the utopian genre has undergone over the years and how this has transformed its interpretation. The debate about ideal societies, especially the concept of utopia, is substantial for this research since it deems possible to interpret Harrington s work as utopia.

Dealing with Wastewater and Water Purification from the Age of Early Modernity to the Present: An Inquiry Into the Management of the Ottawa River

Murray, Matthew 16 July 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines the impact of urban water infrastructure on the Ottawa River through an exploration of the City of Ottawa's historical development from the early modern period to the present. The primary aim is to explain how the Ottawa River came to be removed or ignored from the City of Ottawa's urban development strategy. The thesis focuses on the periods of 1910-1920 (early modernity) and 1999-2012 (present). The theories applied are risk, risk management, normal accident theory and the politics of infrastructure. The data and information for this thesis were primarily retrieved from the City of Ottawa website as well as from the archives of the City of Ottawa. The thesis identifies several factors explaining why the Ottawa River has been mistreated over time, as well as the challenges involved in reforming present-day practices and infrastructure. Several recommendations to fix the situation are advanced.

Význam bastionových fortifikací ve vývojovém procesu vojenské revoluce / Significance of bastioned fortifications to developmental process of military revolution

Wohlmuth, Petr January 2013 (has links)
English Abstract This Master Degree (Mgr.) thesis, takes up the topic of so called Military Revolution theory debate, focusing on historical and social developmental process, unfolding in the Early modern Europe. Military revolution is conceptualised as a source of far reaching societal change, having a civilisational dimension, contributing to overall weberian rationalisation process, happening in the Occident. In this text, military revolution is theoretically approached as a non-substantional developmental process and its structure and dynamics are analyzed using customized version of actor-network-theory of Bruno Latour. In this attempt, usual assumptions of natural ontological continuity, totality and developmental character of social realm are critically suppressed. Theoretical outcome of this thesis, based upon historical evidences, confirms, that even using this profoundly critical approach, military revolution possesses a distinctive quality of a developmental process and it can serve as a strong cognitive instrument of social sciences for researching Early modernity in Europe. ‘One Dress – One Nation!’ : The societal implications of King Gustav III’s National Costume in late eighteenth-century Swedish Court Society

Carlos, Raoul Christian January 2021 (has links)
This thesis explores the societal implications of Gustav III’s national costume in the context of Swedish court society during the late eighteenth century. With the aims of uncovering King Gustav III’s view of the National Costume and its role in Swedish court society, as well as how we can understand the National Costume’s meaning for the aristocracy in late eighteenth-century Sweden, this thesis presents a post-structural textual analysis of Gustav III’s (1806) REFLEXIONER, angående en ny nationel klädedrägt (Reflections concerning a new national costume) in order to uncover King Gustav III’s perception of and ideology behind the national costume. This is then juxtaposed with a similar analysis of a chapter from Hedvig Elisabeth Charlotta’s (1902) journal, representing an aristocratic counter-perspective. This thesis presents a previously unexplored sociological perspective in studying Gustav III’s National Costume. Departing from Norbert Elias’ work around the court society, arguments are made for the interpretation of the National Costume as an instrument in court ceremonial, at the king’s disposal, holding the potential to create a distance in power between the Swedish court nobility and the monarchy. Furthermore, it is argued that the National Costume represents an oppressive force to the Swedish court nobility as a social class.
