The purpose of this study was to determine the mental attitudes of Lodi Union High School Girls toward their physical education program, and to arrive, on the basis of the findings, at constructive recommendations. The study was particularly concerned with; (1) The mental attitudes of the girls toward the general organization of the program: (a) attitudes toward activities offered, (b) attitudes toward requirements - costume, participation, showers, etc.; (2) An evaluation of the program: (a) physical, social, psychological development, (b) carry-over value into adult life; (3) Suggestions for betterment of programs

The investigator became interested in the question, "What is the typical high school background in physical education of freshman girls enrolled in Texas colleges." The investigator was particularly interested in the background of freshman girls enrolled in North Texas State College. On the basis of the above interest, the investigator undertook a study of the previous public senior high school experiences in physical education of freshman girls enrolled at North Texas State College for the spring semester, 1960, with recommendations for the curriculum in the area of physical education for the college service classes.

Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes held by physical education teachers towards the implementation of Title IX with particular emphasis on coeducational physical education. In addition to the original issue, the following sub-problems were established: (1) To determine if a significant difference in attitudes towards the implementation of coeducational physical education existed between junior high (or middle school) and senior high school physical education teachers.; (2) To determine if a significant difference in attitudes towards the implementation of coeducational physical education existed between male and female physical education teachers.; (3) To determine if a significant difference in attitudes towards the implementation of coeducational physical education can be attributed to teachers with varying years of experience.

Young women in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico are coming of age in an era of feminicides, drug wars, impunity, and fear. This ethnographic study examines the ways in which Preparatoria Altavista, a public high school, in one of the most marginalized areas of Juárez, attempts to empower subaltern young women through its critical and social justice philosophy of education. The study draws from critical pedagogy, socio-cultural theory, and feminist scholarship to offer a unique analysis of how hegemonic ideas are resisted and/or inscribed pedagogically, politically, and institutionally at Altavista. Secondly, the study examines how the school’s constructions of democratic and social justice education interact with the current dystopic context of Juárez and discourses about Juárez women to provide a framework with which a group of young women author their identities and practice forms of resistance. The ethnographic fieldwork took place in the 2009-2010 academic year. The methods included unstructured ethnographic interviews with teachers, administrators, and numerous students, as well as semi-structured interviews and an auto-photography technique with nine girls. The study identifies three interrelated aspects that characterize the transformative pedagogy of Preparatoria Altavista: freedom and autonomy, authentic caring relationships, and the cultivation of critical discourse and activism. Together, these core values promote the school’s ultimate goal for its students – autogestión, or the ability to self-author empowered identities; read their world; and initiate and develop socially transformative projects. Considering the school’s context, as well as the many challenges inherent in the dystopic Juárez of today, the study also identifies a typology of four different paths to the girls’ identity and agency development: the Redirectors, the Reinventors, the Redefiners, and the Refugees. This typology is based on various ways and degrees to which the young women in this study authored the self as they negotiated the messages from the multiple figured worlds that they inhabit. The study seeks to counter sensationalist, criminalizing, and dooming narratives about Juárez youth, as well as stereotypical and objectifying depictions of Juárez women by offering a nuanced analysis of their experiences, perspectives, identities, and forms of agency. The study also seeks to offer a language of possibility and hope for urban schools and contexts of civil unrest through critical pedagogy. / text

Accompanying materials housed with archival copy. / The purpose of this research was to describe and critically interpret girls' experiences with respect to body image, physical activity and health. The qualitative inquiry included focus group and individual interviews, document analysis and field observations. These methods were used to explore the perceptions of sixty-three girls (grades eight and eleven) and staff from an inner-city high school. Through interpretive data analysis (and constant comparison), the inter-related themes of body image, physical activity and health branched into the sub-themes of societal influences and personal attitudes including: friends, boys, family, school and media. Girls' body images ranged from minor preoccupations to major dissatisfaction with their bodies, while a few girls were happy being themselves. Weak or negative family influences gave way to influences by media, boys and friends. A few girls were very active, whereas others' low levels of participation were attributed to: disinterest in physical activity, intimidation by boys, or perceived lack of opportunity. The girls' perceptions of health incorporated fitness, weight, and eating habits. Girls often used negative qualifiers when describing their weight or body shape. Generally, girls perceived overweight individuals as not taking care of themselves. This research supports the development of gender sensitive physical education programs promoting healthier lifestyles for females.
