The role of intercultural experience in crisis management : A qualitative study in a Swedish University

Hickok, Dustin, Yılmaz, Ezgi January 2022 (has links)
Crisis management is a technique that has existed within organizations worldwide and is dictated by the response of leaders’ actions. In a classroom, the teacher can be referred to as an ‘educational leader’. With an emphasized work setting of the classroom, different leadership responses can be examined in a comparative analysis. The focus of this thesis is to explore the effect of intercultural experience when higher education leaders are dealing with crisis management within their classrooms. This exploratory study adopts a qualitative analysis with the help of deductive approach and critical realism philosophy. The primary source of this study is the interviews with professors from a Swedish University, both from local and international programs. By using intercultural crises challenges, crisis scenarios in a higher educational setting were created. These themes are ethnocentrism, scandal/misinterpretation, and culture shock. These scenarios were used in the interview process to understand how different program leaders manage the crises. Additionally, the findings of this study show that intercultural experience of higher educational leaders plays a role in how they are managing a crisis within a classroom setting.

Educational Leaders' Perceptions of the Impact of MBTI Professional Development on Leadership Practices in One School Division in Virginia

Gardner, Daniel Joseph 17 March 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to identify the perceived impact of Myers-Briggs Test Indicator (MBTI) professional development on principal and assistant principal educational leadership practices in one school division in Virginia. The researcher collected and analyzed data to determine self-reported leadership changes that came as a result of school-system led professional development involving the Myers-Briggs Test Indicator. The results of these findings could help determine if school leaders and school systems would benefit from Myers-Briggs professional development. The findings were as follows: a) interview participants indicated only limited benefits of the MBTI training b) some participants identified self-awareness as a valuable leadership action related to the personality disposition training; c) some participants identified that they changed how they approached decisions when working with individuals with similar or different personality preferences and, d) participants indicated interest in additional MBTI training. Based on these findings, it is reasonable to conclude MBTI could be considered as a personality disposition tool in the context of comparing educational leadership personality preferences and understanding certain aspects of the decision-making process. The majority of the participants also recommended that such professional development be extended with additional sessions that allow for exploration and learning in specific school and team settings. / Doctor of Education / The purpose of this study was to identify the perceived impact of Myers-Briggs Test Indicator (MBTI) professional development on principal and assistant principal educational leadership practices in one school division in Virginia. The Myers Briggs Test Indicator (MBTI) was used as a framework for the professional development. The MBTI is an introspective self-report questionnaire indicating differing psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions. The training was led by school division staff that had been certified to use the MBTI materials. The researcher interviewed nine school leaders from the school division located in the southeastern region of Virginia. The majority of participants identified that the training led to increased self-awareness and a change in how they viewed the decision-making process as it related to personality preferences. Based on the study findings, it is reasonable to conclude that MBTI could be considered as a professional development tool. The majority of the participants also recommended that such professional development be extended with additional sessions that allow for exploration and learning in specific school and team settings.

Exploring the K–12 Teacher-Student Relationship: Strategies Teachers Use to Influence Students With Emotional Disabilities' School Experiences

Hunt, Turonne Kalada 28 June 2021 (has links)
This study explored the K-12 teacher-student relationship (TSR) by identifying strategies that teachers use to influence students with emotional disabilities' (EDs) school experiences socially, academically, and behaviorally (SAB). The identified strategies were organized around the four phases (appraisal, testing, agreement, and planning) of building teacher-student relationships. This was a qualitative study that involved nine interviews with teachers (6 elementary, 1 middle, and 2 high school) from two school divisions (one rural and one suburban) in southwest Virginia. Data analysis included inductive and deductive coding of the transcribed interviews to identify strategies that teachers use to influence students with EDs SAB and to align the identified strategies within the four phases of building TSRs. Findings of the study suggest five key strategies that teachers are using to influence students socially, five key strategies that teachers are using to influence students academically, and eight key strategies that teachers are using to influence students behaviorally. Additionally, five strategies aligned within the appraisal phase, six strategies aligned within the agreement phase, nine strategies aligned within the testing phase, and nine strategies aligned within the planning phase. The results of this study could provide further insight to scholars to support the need for teachers to use research/ evidence-based strategies when working with students with EDs to assist the students in achieving better outcomes. Educational leaders and teachers are provided with strategies they can use when working with students with EDs to improve school related outcomes and build teacher-student relationships (TSRs). / Doctor of Education / This study explored the K-12 teacher-student relationship (TSR) by identifying key strategies that teachers are using to influence students with emotional disabilities socially, academically, and behaviorally. / The objective of this paper is to analyze evidence for the education and performance of educational leaders in a network of retailers who aim to build a learning culture, taking into consideration the perception of these leaderships, their staff, and other entrepreneurs through an action research. The company in focus works in the retailing trade, selling clothes and apparel, and it has 13 stores in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. This study was carried out using qualitative research, which was based on action research through interviews, reflection groups, focus groups and a logbook. We considered as participants all of the three directors, as well as the 13 leaderships and 13 collaborators from each leadership. The collected data was studied applying the concept of content analysis, which was defined considering the categories: 1 - Educational leader; 2 - Learning organizations, challenges encountered; 3 - Organizational culture, elements that make feasible and that make difficult the performance of an Educational leader. Each category gave origin to subcategories that were referenced in the techniques used in action research: Diagnosis- intervention and feedback. The revision of the theory covered the topics of educational leadership, initially emphasizing the characteristic of a Leader and Educator, and later considering those of a proper Educational leader, as well as organizations that learn the organizational culture. In order to contribute to the referred company, this research presented results which were transformed into products. Furthermore, it is believed that this may contribute to future research and to the personal achievement and professional fulfilment of leaders, together with the beneficial targeting of retail organizations and others companies which are willing to make use of a learning culture- “organizations that learn”.

Determinants of school success in disadvantaged environments

Mampuru, Marisane Edward 30 June 2003 (has links)
Learners in disadvantaged environments are less likely to do well at school. Yet some of the most successful schools operate in such environments. The purpose of this study was to establish the relative influence of various determinants of school success in disadvantaged environments. To this end literature study was done in two phases. The first resulted in a taxonomy of success factors, which was then used to guide the second in-depth phase. Thereafter an empirical study was done, involving qualitative field work at four successful schools in disadvantaged environments. Empirically it was discovered that there is no single most important success factor because all success factors are interrelated and interdependent. The over-arching success factor discovered in this study which was involvement of all stakeholders. / Education / M.Ed.

PERCEPTION INFLUENCED BY PHENOMENA: IDENTIFY CORE-SUBJECT TEACHER PERCEPTIONS OF CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION

Tucker, Sheri Lynn 01 June 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to identify the perception influenced by phenomena impacting core-subject teacher perceptions of career technical education (CTE). Studies show that CTE is highly successful at preparing California’s students for college and career (Friedman, 2006). However, some educators see “CTE maintain less value in helping to encourage student success” (Shanklin, 2014, p. 3). The phenomenological study examined the perception influencing lived experiences with focus groups and one-on-one interviews. Core-subject teachers participated in these face-to-face interviews. Findings show that core-subject teachers are biased against CTE. Analysis of the survey results determined perception influenced by phenomena experienced by core-subject instructors included perfectionistic characteristics among parents, a society obsessed with outdoing the other person and very little evidence of educational reforms. The study asked questions to raise the teachers’ perceptions of the rigor and relevance in CTE, to identify support that teachers give students applying to CTE instead of college, and how do teachers support the integrated curriculum. Future results will see educational leaders and teachers improve the perception of CTE using new training. A policy change would allow English Language Learners exiting an English Language Development centered schedule on being eligible for CTE at any age. Essential to the future of CTE are (1) lengthening the school day to accommodate a more diversified schedule and (2) eliminating the requirement to stay in one industry sector for up to four years.

Rektorers arbete med kompetensutveckling av lärares erfarenhetsbaserade undervisning

Knifsund, Camilla January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this study is to gain an understanding how the principals choose to develop teacher competence in experience-based teaching. I seek patterns in the different interview answers based on phenomenographic approach. My empirical data was collected with the help of computer-aided mail interviews. The results of the study have given answers to the questions on which the study is based upon and the results show a great variation. Variation in the interpretation of the concept of experience-based teaching and the governance document. But the results also vary regarding the skills development the principals offers teachers. Due to the variations that seem to prevail in all statements, it may be relevant to emphasize the importance of centralized interpretation of key concepts at the national level, in order to get as close to equivalent teaching as possible.
