Freely Ye Have Received, Freely Give (Matthew 10:8): How Giving Away Religious Digital Books Influences The Print Sales of Those Books

Lack of access prevents many from benefiting from educational resources. Digital technologies now enable educational resources, such as books, to be openly available to those with access to the Internet. This study examined the financial viability of a religious publisher's putting free digital versions of eight of its books on the Internet. The total cost of putting these books online was $940.00. Over a 10-week period these books were downloaded 102,256 times and print sales of these books increased 26%. Comparisons with historical book sales and sales of comparable titles suggest a positive but modest connection between this increase and the online availability of the free books. Textbook Bling: An Evaluation of Textbook Quality and Usability in Open Educational Resources Versus Traditionally Published Textbooks

This mixed-methods study evaluated quality, usage, and perceptions of open educational resources compared to traditionally published textbooks. Because textbooks and other related materials make up a significant portion of educational costs, open educational resources have been explored for potential cost savings at all levels of education. These resources use public domain or open-licensed materials as the content component of free eTextbooks or low-cost printed textbooks. This evaluation explores how teachers and students use textbook resources both in and out of the classroom and the degree to which the content and design of open textbooks compares in quality and value to traditional textbooks. Data came through evaluating the print media design and content quality of the books in a Utah pilot program, analyzing the actual textbook artifacts from students, and conducting teacher surveys and interviews. The data points to clear differences in quality and use between the two types of books. Although the open textbooks are generally a lower quality product than traditional publisher produced textbooks, they were used in unique ways. Teachers who participated in the open textbook development tended to value the book as a resource, leading us to conclude that the ability to customize open resources may be an important determinant of textbook use. However, it is also likely that textbooks have only a minor affect on academic outcomes compared to other more problematic pedagogical and educational policy issues. This evaluation points to the need for additional study on the impact these differences have on learning outcomes.

Faculty Perceptions of Open Educational Resources Quality by Peer Review

In this paper, 936 faculty free response reviews of open textbooks from the Open Textbook Library were analyzed for content and themes. The reviews were completed by faculty members at institutions in the United States and Canada. The textbooks were evaluated regarding their comprehensiveness, content accuracy, relevance longevity, clarity, consistency, modularity, organization structure flow, interface, grammatical errors, and cultural relevance. The results of the reviews found that the across 9360 comments regarding the quality of open textbooks, of these comments 97.3% reflected adequate or exceptional reviews of the textbooks. Faculty often compared the texts to traditional textbooks and in all mentions of comparison, the open textbook were regarded to be of equal or superior quality. The results of this study aid in alleviating concerns regarding quality of Open Educational Resources (OER) and provide peer reviews that faculty who consider adopting these textbooks often request. Limitations of the study and further prescriptions for research regarding OER quality and peer review research have been explored in the study.

A Mixed Methods Study of Special Education Families' Experiences at an Online Charter School

Student well-being (as opposed to an overemphasis on learning outcomes or technologies) should serve as the central component of a successful online model for students with disabilities. Historically, research on online schools for students with disabilities has focused on outcomes. One online charter schools growth of the students with disabilities population has outpaced the growth of the general education student population over the past eight years, which is an unusual trend that warrants additional scrutiny. Using anonymous parent and student surveys coupled with in-depth phenomenological interviews, this explanatory mixed-methods study investigates the reasons families of students with disabilities chose online learning at this particular school and what their experiences have been. The findings suggest that parents and students value the learning environment in terms of choosing when, where, and how to learn, and the student experience in terms of safety, support, academics, and teachers. Further analysis suggests the importance of mattering, social safety and connection, open educational resource-enabled pedagogy, and self-determination in providing supportive online learning environments for students with disabilities and their parents. potreba da se u digitalnim repozitorijumima obrazovni resursi opi&scaron;u putem skupa metapodataka koji je specifičan za određenog korisnika ili domen. Obzirom da korisnici ne mogu samostalno da ručno vr&scaron;e izmenu softverske aplikacije, pristup predložen u ovoj disertaciji se zasniva na tehnikama modelom vođenog razvoja softvera, koji treba da omogući prilagođavanje softverske aplikacije programski, bez potrebe za razvojem ili naručivanjem nove aplikacije. Da bi se predloženo re&scaron;enje verifikovalo, sproveden je eksperiment koji evaluira njegove karakteristike.</p><p>Rezultati - U disertaciji je predložena softverska platforma za upravljanje obrazovnim resursima opisanim dinamički pro&scaron;irivim skupom metapodataka. Platforma omogućuje kreiranje modela podataka koji se programski transformi&scaron;u u veb aplikaciju za upravljanje obrazovnim resursima. Na ovaj način, korisnik može da kreira sopstveni model metapodataka koji je odgovarajući u određenom domenu.</p><p>Ograničenja istraživanja/implikacije &ndash; Re&scaron;enje verifikovano od strane korisnicima sa određenim tehničkim znanjem. Potrebno je istražiti prikladnost platforme za domenske eksperte sa ograničenim tehničkim znanjem, koji treba da defini&scaron;u nove skupove metapodataka u svom domenu.</p><p>Praktične implikacije &ndash; Re&scaron;enje se može koristiti u digitalnim repozitorijuma koji skladi&scaron;te raznolike obrazovne resurse. Svaki resurs može biti opisan koristeći metapodatke iz domena kojem resurs pripada.<br />Originalnost/vrednost - Digitalni repozitorijumi standardno opisuju obrazovne resurse koristeći neki generalni skup metapodataka, koji je vi&scaron;e fokusiran na fizičke karakteristike resursa, umesto na njihovo značenje. Predloženo re&scaron;enje uvodi proizvoljnu domenski-zavisnu semantiku u opis resursa, čime se unapređuje njihovo dobavljanje.</p>

Ciência cidadã por meio de estações modulares: construindo as condições para um monitoramento meteorológico colaborativo / Citizen science through modular stations : building the conditions for a collaborative meteorological monitoring

Foi desenvolvido um protótipo de hardware de sistema de monitoramento meteorológico como tecnologia aberta e livre e voltado para a ciência cidadã, chamado de Estações Meteorológicas Modulares (EMM). Foram considerados critérios de acessibilidade dos materiais e facilidade de modificação no desenvolvimento do projeto. Todos os programas utilizados no desenvolvimento são softwares livres. Um dos elementos desenvolvidos, a placa de controle das EMM, possibilita medir diferentes parâmetros meteorológicos, além de realizar o registro dados e envio para um servidor. Também possibilita a inclusão de novos sensores. Por todos esses fatores, é considerada satisfatória quanto a sua funcionalidade. A estrutura mecânica das EMM atingiu um patamar de preço acessível a indivíduos e organizações como escolas e associações de moradores de bairro, e apresenta fácil adaptabilidade a diferentes condições de instalação. O custo total do sistema ficou abaixo de alternativas proprietárias amadoras e significativamente abaixo de alternativas proprietárias profissionais. Soluções acessíveis para alguns elementos da EMM ainda requerem testes mais aprofundados. Parte das ferramentas utilizadas na fabricação da placa de controle ainda carece de maior disseminação junto à sociedade para acessibilizar o sistema das EMM. Os registros de desenvolvimento do trabalho foram feitos em forma de documentação aberta por meio de cadernos de laboratório abertos. As atividades de fabricação, montagem e instalação das EMM foram feitas seguindo métodos colaborativos chamados de Encontros de Fabricação Colaborativa e Mutirões das EMM. O resultado deste trabalho, unindo as documentações, os registros dos métodos colaborativos de fabricação, montagem e instalação e as consolidadas oficinas do projeto, é sintetizado no Guia da Comunidade EMM. Este é um roteiro para quem quiser fazer parte e ampliar uma rede de monitoramento ambiental colaborativo com as EMM, e é baseado em atividades educacionais para compreensão dos diferentes elementos da ferramenta e para a emancipação tecnológica. Uma das EMM foi comparada com uma estação automática oficial do Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET). Nessas comparações, as medidas de temperatura e pressão atmosférica apresentaram diferenças menores do que a acurácia dos sensores, enquanto a umidade relativa do ar apresentou uma diferença acima da acurácia do sensor. Este foi um primeiro passo de validação das EMM. / It was developed the hardware prototype of a meteorological monitoring system as free and open source hardware with focus on citizen science. The system is called Estações Meteorológicas Modulares (EMM, from Portuguese Modular Meteorological Stations). Affordability and reachability of materials and ease of remix were criteria considered in the development of this project. All the programs used in the development are free software. One of the elements developed, the control board of the EMM, is considered satisfactory in terms of: the parameters it enables to measure, the functionalities of communication and register of data, and the possibility of inclusion of new sensors.. The resulting solution to the mechanical structure of the EMM is low cost, affordable to schools and neighborhood associations, and is easy to adapt to different conditions of installation. The whole cost of the system is lower than proprietary amateur alternatives and significantly lower than proprietary professional solutions. Reachable and affordable solutions to some elements of the EMM still need some deeper testing. Some of the tools used to produce the control board still need a broader dissemination among the society in order to ensure the reachability and affordability of the EMM system. The work development registers were made as open documentation by means of open laboratory notebooks. The EMM fabrication, mounting and installations activities were made as collaborative methods called Encontros de Fabricação Colaborativa (from Portuguese, Collaborative Fabrication Gatherings) and Mutirões of the EMM. The result of this work, merging the documentation, the register of collaborative methods of fabrication, mounting and installations, and the consolidated workshops of the EMM project, are synthesized in the EMM Community Guide. This is a script to the ones who want to make part and expand the collaborative environmental monitoring network with the EMM, and it is based in educational activities to comprehend the different elements of the tool and to promote the technological emancipations. One of the EMM was compared to an official automatic meteorological station from Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET, from Portuguese Meteorology National Institute). In this comparison, the temperature and atmospheric pressure measurements showed differences lower than the accuracy of the sensors used, and the relative air humidity presented a difference higher than the accuracy of the sensor. This was the first step to validate the EMM.

台灣地區高級中等學校之公私立別、地區、規模與教育資源對學業成就之影響

本研究係針對台灣高級中等學校之城/鄉、公/私立及學校規模之學業成就與教育資源進行研究。以大學入學考試中心提供之數據進行分析。經由三因子變異數分析結果指出城地區的學業成就高於鄉;公立學校成績高於私立;學校規模學業成就依序為大、中、小型。城鄉皆以公立高中學業成就優於私立高中;在城的公立高中學業成就又高於鄉地區。公立大型高中學業成就高於公立中、小型;私立大型、中型、小型學業成就排序亦同。再藉由典型相關分析可知公立學校學業成就與教育資源有典型相關最後使用t檢定比較教育資源的差異,得到生師比及平均班級人數並無城鄉差異;在公私立學校間的平均班級人數以公立優於私立。公立高中學校於教育資源及學業成就均優於私立學校,此與國外研究不同。 / The purpose of this research explores the relationship between the academic achievement and educational resources among urban/ rural schools, public /private schools and different size of senior secondary schools in Taiwan. The raw data offered by the College Entrance Examination Center is analyzed in this study. By three-way ANOVA, we found the academic achievement of urban schools is better than that of rural schools. The academic achievement of the public schools is better than private ones. Furthermore, the academic achievement of the large-sized schools is better than that of the medium and small-size ones. In addition, the academic achievement of the urban public schools is better than that of rural public ones. The academic achievement of the large-sized public schools is better than that of the medium and small-size public ones. The result shows the same order while it comes to the difference of academic achievement among private school of different size. There is significant canonical correlation between educational resources and academic achievement in the public school. Finally by t-test, the research’s result represents that pupil-teacher ratio and class size have no significant difference between urban schools and rural ones. And the class size of the private schools is larger than in public schools. In Taiwan, the performance of academic achievement and educational resources in public schools are better than private ones that differ from some previous foreign studies.

Der vorliegende Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der lernerorientierten Entwicklung von mobilen Bildungsmedien am Beispiel einer ePortfolio-Lösung und eines Kompetenzchecks für die duale Ausbildung. Nach dem Ansatz des Design Based Research (DBR) werden diese Bildungsmedien zur Verbesserung der Ausbildungsqualität in gewerblich-technischen Berufen in engem Dialog mit den zukünftigen Anwendern1, den Ausbildern, Auszubildenden, Lehrern und Meistern entwickelt und erprobt. Das Ziel der forschenden Entwicklung ist die Stärkung des lernenden Individuums im Prozess der Aneignung und Reflexion von Wissen und Können. Bei der Entwicklung der hier vorgestellten ePortfolio-Lösung wird aufgezeigt, wie qualitative Methoden aus dem Ansatz der agilen Softwareentwicklung (User Stories, Crowdtesting) den DBR-Ansatz im Hinblick auf eine gesteigerte Nutzerakzeptanz implementiert werden können.
