Thesis (MPA.) -- University of Limpopo, 2020 / The purpose of this study was to investigate challenges in the implementation of Employment Equity Act in the University of Limpopo. The design of the research in this study is both qualitative and quantitative. Data were collected from HODs and Human Resources Officers. Structured interviews and questionnaires were used to collect data form the participants. Data were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. Results revealed that there are more males in Senior Management levels than females in the University. Data further showed that the majority of Senior Management fall under age category 50-64 years old. The results show that most of the respondents hold highest qualifications which is masters and doctoral degree. It was found that most of the respondents are from Sepedi and Tshivenda speaking communities. The finding revealed that the University of Limpopo has been implementing the Employment Equity Act. However, the implementation of the EEA encountered certain challenges including among other resistant to change, poor networking, lack of employment equity awareness, undermining of the HR Officers by Selection Committee members and lack of qualified people with disabilities in certain positions. Another finding shows that the University has Employment Equity Plan with numerical target to be achieved. It found that the successful implementation of EEA will address the problem of unfair discrimination that people suffered as a result of race, gender, disability and sexual orientation. The findings further show that the University is strictly adhering to the stipulations of the EEA. It was found that employees in the University are not well informed of the Employment Equity Policies. Another finding shows that the University Employment Equity has been a very useful tool to promote equality in the University. The study recommends that the University should not deviate from the EEA especially when filling positions reserved for designated groups. It is recommended that HODs should familiarize themselves with the Act. It is recommended that the University use provincial demographics to set the EE targets. University must have EE Plan targets on the agenda at all meetings of the University’s Executive Committees. It is recommended that further discussion and monitoring need to be conducted at Executive Management level.

Solitary objects on quantum spin rings

Shchelokovskyy, Pavlo 16 December 2004 (has links)
We investigate whether quantum spin rings with nearest-neighbor Heisenberg or Ising exchange interactions can host solitary states. Using complete diagonalization techniques the system is described without classical or semiclassical approximation. In this case definitions used in connection with classical solitons are not applicable, one needs to redefine what solitary objects on a quantum spin system with translational symmetry ought to be. Thus, we start our contribution by defining which quantum states possess solitary character. In addition we discuss useful observables in order to visualize solitary quantum states. Then we demonstrate for various quantum spin rings that solitary quantum states indeed exist, and that they are moving around the spin ring without changing their shape in the course of time.

Formulation and characterization of lipid-based nanocarriers for the delivery of antimicrobial peptide

Saha, Srijani January 2022 (has links)
In the past few years, bacterial resistance to antibiotics has posed a major threat to humankind. Development of substitutes for traditional antibiotics is a highly time consuming and expensive venture. For this reason, researchers are focusing on using antimicrobial peptides (AMP) as an alternate. These peptides are found in all living organisms and exhibit a fast and non-targeted mechanism of action. Besides, they are less susceptible to microbial resistance. However, these therapeutic peptides are not stable and have toxic side effects. To overcome these limitations, drug delivery systems have been explored. In this study, the aim was to develop an optimized drug delivery system for AP114. The peptide has been encapsulated in nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) and liposomes, produced by melt emulsification method and solvent injection method, respectively. The physicochemical characterization of different blank and AP114 loaded nanoformulations were analyzed and compared. The results indicated the liposome samples to have the lowest particle size distribution and polydispersity, with a controlled in vitro release of the peptide over 48 hours. Overall, these preliminary findings suggest a promising potential for the formulation of a nanocarrier for AP114 peptide.

Självskadebeteende och Expressed Emotion. En uppföljning av IKB-Intensiv Kontextuell Behandling. / Self-harm behaviour and Expressed Emotion. A follow-up of ICT-Intensive Contextual Treatment.

Selberg, Malin January 2016 (has links)
To intentionally cut, burn or hurt oneself severely is associated with great suffering and often arouse strong reactions within the family context. The problem is extensive and self-harm appears to be a strong predictor of suicide attempts and completed suicides. Globally, suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people. Effective treatment models for this group is urgent. In Sweden, (Uppsala) the model IKB - Intensive Contextual Treatment was developed for adolescents with self-harm and / or suicidal behavior, and their families in order to provide support. IKB is an integrated individual and family therapeutic model. The aim of the study were to evaluate the effectiveness of IKB in relation to frequency of self-harm and levels of Expressed emotion. A total of 34 families participated in the study and they all received treatment in the context of the IKB-model. The families completed the self-assessment forms for data collection before treatment, after treatment and follow-up. Results showed efficiency to reduce self-harm among adolescents and to decrease levels of Expressed emotion. The outcome of the study are discussed based on previous research and methodological issues. /
27

A comparative study of burnout among teachers in a Youth Juvenile Rehabilitation center, an Ex model C school, and Public schools

Clayford, Mario January 2010 (has links)

This study examined three schools / namely a Public, Ex model C, and a Youth juvenile rehabilitation school. A non-experimental survey design was used for this study. The sample consisted of 47 educators across the three types of schools. Data was collected by means of two instruments: a demographic questionnaire, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) consisting of three subscales namely / Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Diminished Personal Accomplishment. It was hypothesised that due to the stressful nature of work in disadvantaged and resource lacking schools, as well as the unstable and unsafe environment in certain schools, burnout among educators in Public and Youth juvenile rehabilitation schools will have a higher prevalence rate than educators in Ex model C schools. The study also aimed to identify which various educator demographic variables correlate with high burnout levels. Correlational results of the study found no significant relationships between the three subscales of the MBI and certain educator demographic variables across the three types of schools. The results of an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test revealed a borderline non-significant difference in the Emotional Exhaustion subscale between the Youth juvenile rehabilitation school and Public schools. Post Hoc comparison tests suggested Public school educators in the sample had the highest levels of burnout in terms of Emotional Exhaustion across the three types of schools, while educators in the Youth juvenile rehabilitation schools showed the lowest levels of burnout in terms of Emotional exhaustion. The results of the present study were discussed from the perspective of the Conservation of Resources theory, suggesting resource depletion as a central facet to burnout and how prolonged stress leads to burnout. Future qualitative studies exploring the etiology of burnout was thus recommended.

Solid waste management based on cost-benefit analysis using the WAMED model

Mutavchi, Viacheslav January 2012 (has links)
Efficient waste management enables the protection of human health, reducing environmental pollution, saving of natural resources, and achieving sustainable and profitable management of energy. In many countries, the general guidelines for waste management are set by national or local waste management plans. Various models provide local authorities with decision-making tools in planning long-term waste management scenarios. This study aims at providing a special model framework for the evaluation of ecological–economic efficiency (ECO-EE) of waste management. This will serve as an information support tool for decision making by actors of a solid waste management (SWM) scheme, primarily at the municipal and regional levels. The objective of this study is to apply the waste management’s efficient decision (WAMED) model along with the company statistical business tool for environmental recovery indicator (COSTBUSTER) model to SWM and municipal solid waste (MSW) schemes in general in order to evaluate and improve their ECO-EE. COSTBUSTER is a mathematical indicator for the size and extent of implementation costs of a certain SWM scheme, compared with the total size of the average financial budget of a SWM actor of a certain kind. In particular, WAMED is proposed for evaluating the suitability to invest in baling technology. Baling of solid waste is an emerging technology which is extensively used worldwide to temporarily store waste for either incineration or recovery of raw materials. The model for efficient use of resources for optimal production economy (the EUROPE model) is for the first time applied to emissions from baling facilities. It has been analysed how cost-benefit analysis (CBA) and full cost accounting (FCA) can facilitate environmental optimisation of SWM schemes. The effort in this work represents a continuation of such ambitions as an enlargement of the research area of CBA based modelling within SWM. In the thesis, certain theoretical and economic aspects of SWM were analysed as case studies. A shift of viewpoints within the field of waste management is presented. This shift is in accordance with the prevailing concept of sustainable development, as commonly understood. It is concluded that in the practical SWM context, the findings of the study point at the possibilities to modify the common CBA- and FCA-based methods by WAMED, COSTBUSTER, and EUROPE. Therefore, it can be said that estimations in a SWM scheme can be carried out by using certain economic model, if properly modified in a logical and plausible way. New principles for cost allocation to SWM residual products are presented in the current work. They imply strong industrial cost saving incentives through promoting the introduction of new and improved processing technologies for rest-waste. Such incentives then strongly promote investments that are likely to improve both the environment and the corporate profitability. Thereby, the occurrence of non-commercialised, and hence not utilized, wastes is reduced. This improves the short term corporate economy through saving raw materials such as solid waste fuel, spending less time for administrating waste flows, and less wear and tear of the plant machinery. Additional environmental advantages which affect the balance sheets in a favourable way are related to the long-term business economy and extended environmental goodwill. This is due to the recently introduced way of considering solid waste as regular goods in financial terms - the equality principle. If waste is seen as goods, and not wasted in landfills, the environment will improve. This, in turn, leads to an improved quality of life. Based on the current study, it is recommended to apply WAMED to SWM schemes in order to evaluate their ECO–EE to justify decision making and investments. Also, it is recommended to apply COSTBUSTER, based on the current WAMED outcome, to SWM schemes to determine their relative size and extent. It is recommended to apply EUROPE to the emissions in case of accidental burning, treatment of leachate, andabatement with odours at any SWM scheme, based on the induced economic incentives, in order to reduce unwanted substances and phenomena.
