Modulation formats with adjustment capability to the variable propagation conditions are of interest in reconfigurable optical networks. Coupling of the electrical, mechanical and optical response in polymer/liquid-crystal composites

Ganesan, Lakshmi Meena January 2010 (has links)
Micrometer-sized liquid-crystal (LC) droplets embedded in a polymer matrix may enable optical switching in the composite film through the alignment of the LC director along an external electric field. When a ferroelectric material is used as host polymer, the electric field generated by the piezoelectric effect can orient the director of the LC under an applied mechanical stress, making these materials interesting candidates for piezo-optical devices. In this work, polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) are prepared from poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) and a nematic liquid crystal (LC). The anchoring effect is studied by means of dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. Two dispersion regions are observed in the dielectric spectra of the pure P(VDF-TrFE) film. They are related to the glass transition and to a charge-carrier relaxation, respectively. In PDLC films containing 10 and 60 wt% LC, an additional, bias-field-dependent relaxation peak is found that can be attributed to the motion of LC molecules. Due to the anchoring effect of the LC molecules, this relaxation process is slowed down considerably, when compared with the related process in the pure LC. The electro-optical and piezo-optical behavior of PDLC films containing 10 and 60 wt% LCs is investigated. In addition to the refractive-index mismatch between the polymer matrix and the LC molecules, the interaction between the polymer dipoles and the LC molecules at the droplet interface influences the light-scattering behavior of the PDLC films. For the first time, it was shown that the electric field generated by the application of a mechanical stress may lead to changes in the transmittance of a PDLC film. Such a piezo-optical PDLC material may be useful e.g. in sensing and visualization applications. Compared to a non-polar matrix polymer, the polar matrix polymer exhibits a strong interaction with the LC molecules at the polymer/LC interface which affects the electro-optical effect of the PDLC films and prevents a larger increase in optical transmission.

Effects Of Spin Polarization And Spatial Confinement On Optical Properties Of Bulk Semiconductors And Doped Quantum Wells

Joshua, Arjun 02 1900 (has links)
We correlated experimental results with theoretical estimations of the dielectric function ε(ω) in two contexts: the effect of an electric field in quantum wells and that of the spin polarization of an interacting electron-hole plasma in bulk semiconductors. In the first part, we recorded photoreflectance spectra from Ge/GeSi quantum wells of different widths but having comparable builtin electric fields caused by doping. The reason why the spectra differed in overall shape was difficult to understand by conventional methods, for example, by calculating the allowed transition energies or by fitting the data with lineshape functions at each transition energy. Instead, we computed the photoreflectance spectra from first-principles by using the confined electron and hole wavefunctions. This method showed that the spectra differ in overall shape because of the experimentally hitherto unobserved trend in quantum well electro-optical properties, from the quantum confined Franz-Keldysh effect to the bulk Franz-Keldysh effect, as the well width is increased. The second part develops a threeband microscopic theory for the optical properties due to spin-polarized carriers in quasiequilibrium. We show that calculations based on this theory reproduce all the trends observed in a recent circularly polarized pump-probe experiment reported in the literature. To make the computation less intensive, we proposed a simplified, two-band version of this theory which captured the main experimental features. Besides, we constructed a cw diode laser-based pump-probe setup for our own optical studies of spin-polarized carriers by Kerr rotation. We achieved a sensitivity of detection of Kerr rotation of 3 x 10¯ 8 rad, corresponding to an order of magnitude improvement over the best reports in the literature. The efficacy of our setup allowed for the demonstration of a pumpinduced spin polarization in bulk GaAs, under the unfavorable conditions of steady-state and room temperature.

Hannu, Linus January 2013 (has links)
Currently, Sweden has operative Black Hawk helicopters in Afghanistan. The tasks they are solving in Afghanistan are forward and tactical Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC). This work is about how existing Electronic Warfare Systems in helicopters can be supplemented in order to face a present sniper-threat during forward MEDEVAC in a conflict area which environmentally reminds of Afghanistan. In this work, a few possible techniques will be analyzed. This analyze will be based on aspects from a constructed scenario where the task to be solved, the conflict area, and the known threat is described. The result shows that MEDEVAC-helicopters can be equipped with operator-controlled sensor-gimbals where different electro-optical sensors can be combined. Gimbals allow reconnaissance in 360°. This contributes to the military utility since the main task can be solved by the helicopter personnel more effectively. Also, the probability of survival will probably increase and the personnel and wounded soldiers might feel more secure than before.

Dinâmica de reorientação de cristais líquidos nemáticos dopados com nanopartículas de ouro / Dynamic of reorientation of nematic liquid crystals doped with gold nanoparticles

Santos, Rafael Vieira dos 08 March 2016 (has links)
In recent years, the interest in improving the properties of liquid-crystalline systems by using metallic nanoparticles has grown. This is because these materials have particular optical and electrical characteristics, associated with the plasmon resonance phenomenon. Recently, several studies have shown that the addition of gold nanoparticles affects the electrical response of liquid crystals depending on the nanoparticles geometry and the liquid-crystalline alignment. In this study, we investigated the effects of the addition of gold nanoparticles with different geometries on the relaxation time of the 4-octyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (8CB) liquid crystal, under the helical confinement conditions. We used an experimental setup that explores the Brewster angle to investigate how the application of a external electrical field and temperature of the system affect the reorientation dynamics of the director vector nearby the transition of nematic-smectic-A phase. The results obtained were analyzed within the elastic theory of Franck-Oseen e allowed us to evaluate the effects of nanoparticles on the viscoelastic parameters of the system. Our results show that the addition of nanoparticles significantly affects the electro-optical response of the investigated liquid crystals, especially in conditions of high temperature and low amplitude of the applied electrical field. In addition, we have observed that the geometry of the nanoparticles plays a key role in the modification of the electro-optical properties of the system.

Abel, Stefan 21 February 2014 (has links)
A novel concept of utilizing electro-optical active oxides in silicon photonic devices is developed and realized in the frame of this thesis. The integration of such oxides extends the silicon photonics platform by non-linear materials, which can be used for ultra-fast switching or low-power tuning applications. Barium titanate is used as active material as it shows one of the strongest Pockels coefficients among all oxides. Three major goals are achieved throughout this work: First, thin films of BaTiO3 are epitaxially grown on silicon substrates via molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) using thin SrTiO3 buffer layers. A shuttered co-deposition growth technique is developed in order to minimize the formation of defects in the BaTiO3 films by achieving a 1:1 stoichiometry between barium and titanium. The layers show a tetragonal symmetry and are therefore well-suited for electro-optical applications. The orientation of the long c -axis of the BaTiO3 crystal can be tuned to point perpendicular or parallel to the film surface, depending on the growth conditions. In addition, thin MBE-grown seed layers are combined with rf-sputter deposition. With this hybrid growth approach, rather thick ( > 100 nm), epitaxial BaTiO3 layers on silicon substrates are obtained with a commercially available, wide spread deposition technique. As a second goal, a strong Pockels coefficient of reff = 148 pm/V is determined in the epitaxial BaTiO3 films. This first experimental result on the electro-optical activity of BaTiO3 layers on silicon shows a clear enhancement compared to alternative non-linear materials such as lithium niobate with reff = 31 pm/V. By means of the electro-optical characterization method, also the presence of ferroelectricity in the films is demonstrated. Third, the electro-optical active BaTiO3 layers are embedded into silicon photonic devices. For this purpose, a horizontal slot-waveguide structure with a ~50 nm-thick BaTiO3 film sandwiched between two silicon layers is designed. With this design, the optical confinement in the active BaTiO3 layer is enhanced by a factor of 5 compared to Si-waveguide structures with a standard cross section and BaTiO3 as cladding. Straight BaTiO3 slot-waveguides with propagation losses of 50 − 100 dB/cm as well as functional passive devices such as Mach-Zehnder-interferometers, couplers, and ring resonators are experimentally realized. Additionally, first active ring resonators with Q-factors of Q~5000 are fabricated. The physical origin of the observed resonance shift as a function of the applied bias voltage, however, can not be conclusively clarified in the present work. The combination of high-quality, functional BaTiO3 layers with silicon photonic devices as demonstrated in this thesis offers new opportunities by extending the design palette for engineering photonic circuits with the class of electro-opticalactive materials. The integration of oxides such as BaTiO3 enables novel device concepts for tuning, switching, and modulating light in extremely dense photonic circuits. The integration also opens exciting challenges for material scientists to tailor the electro-optical properties of those oxides by strain engineering or fabrication of superlattice structures, which could ultimately lead to another boost of their electro-optical properties.

Etude et développement d'un système LIBS portable hautes performances de nouvelle génération et d'une source de marquage UV à faible durée d'impulsion / Study and developpement of a new generation portable LIBS system and of a short pulse UV laser for marking

Roux, Clément 04 November 2016 (has links)
This work describes three original laser sources developed specifically for Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and wire marking. The main goal of the work on the LIBS was to propose new solutions to make portable LIBS as efficient as laboratory LIBS and to evaluate their potential in geological applications. New spectrometers (based on SWIFTS technology) and compact lasers were evaluated and they led to the realization of a portable LIBS gun. The two types of analyze possible which are in situ analysis and chemical cartography of the sample surface led to design two specific lasers: a first compact source emitting at 532 nm with a high beam quality allowing a high spatial resolution and a second one with a lower beam quality but much more robust. The laser developed for marking is a Q-switched Nd:YVO4 emitting in the UV at 355 nm. The original architecture used, the “Cavity-Dumped”, make the pulse duration constant (2 ns) with any repetition rate so that the peak power is high even if the repetition rate is important. The very good beam quality observed makes the laser spot very small so that the marking is very precise and contrasted.

Análise óptica de sistemas eletro-ópticos por meio do cálculo da função de transferência de modulação / Optical analyze of electro-optical systems by modulation transfer function calculus

Elisa Signoreto Barbarini 13 April 2012 (has links)
A number of devices use optics or electro-optics in their structures, such as microscopes, telescopes, medical equipments, satellites cameras, among others. The need for methods and tools that assist in determining the performance and quality of optical systems is increasing. The MTF represents a direct and quantitative verification of the image quality, and moreover, it is an objective test that can be used in concatenated optical systems. This paper presents the implementation of software, called SMTF (Software Modulation Transfer Function), in order to calculate the MTF of electro-optical systems. The software was used for calculating the MTF of Digital Fundus Camera, Thermal Imager and Ophthalmologic Surgery Microscope. The information MTF aids the analysis of alignment and measurement of optical quality, and also defines the limit resolution of optical systems, from the graph of MTF. The results obtained with the Fundus Camera and de Thermal Imager were compared with the theorical values acquired by the Zemax, wich is a software used for analysis and development of optical assemblies or lenses. For the Microscope, the results were compared with MTF measured of Microscope Zeiss model, which is the quality standard of ophthalmological microscope. The results show that the software has a good performance by allowing a straightforward analysis of the behavior of optical systems. With the aid of the software was made to align the Fundus Camera and the Thermal Imager and the image quality of Surgical Microscope Ophthalmology was verified.
