The management of inclusive education in the four selected junior primary schools in the Empangeni district, KwaZulu-NatalMajola, Happy Maureen 05 December 2013 (has links)
Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the
Degree of Master of Technology: Education, Durban University of Technology, 2013. / This study investigated the management of inclusive education in the four selected
junior primary schools in the Empangeni District, KwaZulu-Natal.
Despite the fact that the White Paper 6 on Special Needs Education and Training:
Building Inclusive Education and Training System was released in 2001, aiming at
providing quality education for all learners, the implementation and management of
inclusive education in schools still remain a challenge. This research, therefore,
investigated possible challenges and suggested solutions that could be used for the
effective implementation and management of inclusive education in schools.
This study was conducted to answer the following questions:
i.
What are the challenges at school level that delay the implementation of
inclusive education?
ii.
What skills do teachers and principals have or acquired in order to identify and
support learners who experience barriers to learning and development?
iii.
What are the teachers’ perceptions regarding the inclusion of learners who
experience barriers to learning and development?
iv.
Does our education system provide teachers with relevant training to meet the
challenges that come with inclusive education?
An ethnographic research was conducted in four junior primary schools at the
Empangeni District, KwaZulu- Natal to find out what happens in their school setting.
Fifteen foundation phase teachers from four junior primary schools, four principals
and six final year university student teachers participated in the study. The findings of
data collected from teachers, principals and student teachers regarding their views on
inclusion of learners who experience barriers to learning were used to make
recommendations.
The findings from the study revealed the need for schools to effectively implement
the White Paper 6 on Special Needs Education and Training: Building Inclusive
Education and Training System (2001). Inclusion of learners who experience barriers
to learning and development is an international initiative, which aims to provide quality education for all learners. The success of inclusion is based on the adoption
and implementation of the international, national and provincial inclusive education
policies, declarations and guidelines.
In this study, it became evident that there is a shortage of teachers who have
specialization in Special Education: Barriers to Learning. In- service teacher training
and special education element should be included in all courses of initial teacher
training.
Ongoing professional development of teachers on inclusive education issues is also
crucial. Teachers need to be provided with necessary skills to identify developmental
delays and barriers to learning early. This study highlighted the importance of the
establishment of the functional support structures, Institutional Level Support Team
and District Based Support Team so that inclusive education is effectively managed in
the education system. Provision of skills that will assist teachers to provide relevant
support to learners who experience barriers to learning, lies on the existence of the
support structures.
The findings also revealed that schools or any other stakeholder cannot address
barriers to learning in isolation. Linkages with Tertiary Institutions, Department of
Health, Department of Social Development, Non-Governmental Organizations,
parents/ caregivers and teacher unions need to be prioritized, in order to ensure that
diverse needs of learners are met and barriers to learning and development are
addressed.
The positive response from the National Department of Education to the international
initiatives for promoting single inclusive education system that is responsive to the
diverse needs of all learners, resulted to the release of the White Paper 6 on Special
Needs Education and Training: Building Inclusive Education and Training System in
2001. The need to close the gap between theory outlined in all the policies and
guidelines that promote inclusive education and practice becomes evident in this
study.
The management of inclusive education in schools, therefore requires the School
Management Team to facilitate, amongst other things, human resource development
and establishment of the Institutional Level Support Team.

Peer Mediation: an Empirical Exploration Empowering Elementary School Children to Resolve Conflicts ConstructivelyLink, Kathleen Elizabeth Barbieri 08 1900 (has links)
Conflict is inevitable in school and in life. Many children lack skills necessary to resolve daily conflicts constructively. Without knowledge of positive ways to manage conflicts, violence may result. Limited research suggests that involvement in a peer mediation program may have a positive influence on children. This study assessed effects peer mediation training and mediation experience had on student mediators. The pretest-posttest, control-group, and quasi-experimental study investigated the effects of a year long peer mediation program implemented in a suburban elementary school.

Choice factors for parents selecting independent primary schools in Gauteng12 February 2015 (has links)
Ph.D. (Marketing Management) / The ability of independent schools to survive and grow would be enhanced by knowledge of what motivates parents when selecting independent schools in order to assist these schools in better targeting their marketing efforts (McGovern, 2011:16). The primary objective of the study is to recommend marketing guidelines for independent schools and was achieved to identify the choice factors influencing parents’ selection of independent primary schools, identifying the most important choice factors and demographic differences regarding the importance parents attach to choice factors. The external factors influencing the selection of independent schools, the relative importance of price, school facilities and the enrolment process were determined. The usefulness of the sources of information used in the decision-making process was investigated. Both exploratory (qualitative technique) and conclusive (quantitative technique) research designs were followed. For the qualitative technique, dept interviews with ten parents from different independent schools in Gauteng were conducted. For the quantitative technique, a non-probability judgement sample of 669 grade one parents from thirty (30) independent schools in Gauteng participated in the study. The findings of the study identified 29 different choice factors with small class size ranked the highest as choice factor. Previous interactions with the school are the highest ranked external factor influencing the decision-making process of parents and they prefer discount when two or more children from the same household are enrolled. With regard to school facilities, a computer centre is the most important for parents, and a science laboratory is less important. Parents prefer an interview with the principal when enrolling their child and the school open day and school website are the most valuable sources of information for prospective parents. Social media are not considered to be particularly a valuable source of information …

The new configurations of school education led to greater demands of efforts and time. This occupation, like several others present workplace risks that facilitate the development of work-related diseases. However, being a teacher has its specificities. They are inherent to the nature of the work activities. Presenteeism and absenteeism among teachers are manifested in a peculiar way and its occurrence has important consequences. Aims- To evaluate perceptions of teachers\' working conditions of elementary schools and their association with illnesses, sick leave and presenteeism. Methods Qualitative evaluations took place without interference between the variables. Data collection was conducted through individual interviews and documentary analysis. The study was carried out among teachers of municipal schools of Rio Branco, AC. Twenty elementary school teachers were invited to participate. Two groups were formed: ten teachers who never asked for a sick leave during 12 months prior to the data collection; and ten teachers who have been on sick leave (short or long term absence) due to illness, and returned to work either as a teacher or in another function (re-adapted to perform another job in a fundamental school. Data analysis was performed using content analysis. Results and Discussion - The themes raised during the interviews belonged to the following categories: 1- working conditions; 2 work, home and health implications; 3- presenteeism; 4- sickness absenteeism; 5- the recognition and the meaning of work for a teacher and; 6 - support in the prevention of diseases. Teachers mentioned the interference of work in their daily lives, a factor which complicates their own care, family and health. A number of times teachers mentioned several health risks they face at work. The main reported reason for the occurrence of presenteeism was a school requirement that obliged teachers to replace their classes even if they were absent due to a medical reason. Returning to work at the same job (as a teacher in the classroom) was perceived as lack of incentive to preserve ones health; those who were readapted reported it was beneficial leaving a teaching job, as it allowed them a greater time to devote to their families and personal care. Conclusions- Teachers working conditions were associated with work-related diseases. Being a teacher was reported as an additional difficulty to maintain their health. It is necessary to rethink strategies that would allow teachers to use the right to be in sick leave without being punished for missing classes. Programs of health promotion, as well as easier access to health services should be inserted in this context
