The empowerment of aggressive state ideology in two periods of Russian history

Urs, Ion, Social Sciences & International Studies, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, UNSW January 2007 (has links)
The concepts of power and state - particularly embedded in the idea of the Great Power, with a geopolitical perspective and a profoundly aggressive character - are tantamount in importance to the Russia's elite political ideology. However, the existence of different emphases within such a political ideology, ranging from the active-obstructive to the passive stances, brings into question the factors of variation that might be responsible for the elite's level of determination to pursue these concepts over an internal or foreign policy development. In addressing this query, two tasks are set: descriptive - involving a survey of the content of Russian aggressive political ideology over different periods in history; and explanatory - determining circumstances that might account for the empowerment of one or other option of Russian aggressive political ideology. Therefore, the thesis includes a comparison of historical periods with similar relevance to the Russian state. The concern here is in relation to shifting factors of variations of aggressive political ideology acting in the space-frame of one state, but in different time-frame. Resting on these frames the thesis explores the shaping of the Russian elite's defining principles of state internal and foreign policy development and traces the factors of variation responsible for the empowerment of one or other particular form of the aggressive political ideology. The factors of variation discussed in the thesis are different in nature and intensity. The primary impetus for variation in the form that aggressive political ideology would take is determined by the factor of national distress. Other factors (regime volatility, political and economic motivations, information dissemination, and challenges within the international system) are responsible for the depth and extent to which aggressive ideology is going to resonate. No factor could create the variation by itself. The argument is that a specific set of factors is required to create the conditions for variations in the form the aggressive political ideology would take and to determine whether aggressive ideology would generate or not an obstructive political decision.

Decadence and resilience : a study of the aristocratic novel in English in the twentieth century

Wessels, Johan Andries 11 1900 (has links)
The aristocratic novel in the twentieth century depicts the successes and failures of the aristocracy's efforts to come to terms with the social realities brought about by contemporary egalitarianism. Although several of the novels discussed are written by aristocrats, the aristocratic novel as such refers to novels about the aristocracy as a social grouping. Seven authors are selected to represent fictional treatment of a class in crisis, struggling between decadence and resilience: V. Sackville-West, Evelyn Waugh, Nancy Mitford, Elizabeth Bowen, Molly Keane, L.P. Hartley and Emma Tennant. Sackville-West faces and chronicles the inevitable decay of her class, yet cannot refrain from mourning its gracious past. To her, the manor house symbolizes an ancient idyllic symbiosis between aristocrat and worker. To Evelyn Waugh, the aristocracy embodies the finest achievements of inherited English culture. He regards its decline as the crumbling of Christian civilization itself. Resilience against the rising proletariate lies in faith and a chivalrous other-worldliness associated with the old Catholic aristocracy. Mitford uses comedy to defend the ideals of service and honour which she sees undermined by vulgarity and mercantilism. She resists her opponents with lethal swipes of raillery. Bowen and Keane deal with the decline of the Irish Protestant Ascendancy. The heirs of the ascendancy have to cope with the paralysing bequest of a more vital past. Ironically, resilience lies in breaking with their heritage. Hartley appears to criticize the class structure, but his work reveals a fascination for the captivating myth of patrician life. Tennant, representing an aristocracy which has profited from the resurgence of wealth in Thatcherite Britain, is unsparingly caustic on the condition of her class. Her satiric writing presents an ethical resurgence that goes beyond the mere financial recovery of her society. The genre examined suggests a primal need among urbanized citizens for the myth of an heroic order. In the finest aristocratic novels, admiration for an imitable superior order is used to rally a consciousness of a venerable ethical establishment. What is threatened or lost is not merely wealth and privilege, but aristokratos - government by the best. / English Studies / D. Litt. et Phil. (English)

This work is inserted in the Histedbr. It refers to the understanding and unveiling of the metaphor " Athens of the South of Minas" created for the city in the south of Minas called Campanha, understood here as representation through the interpretation of the work of the ¿memorialistas¿ of the place to the light of the History of the National/ Regional Education and of the theoretical-methodological references of the Cultural History and their categories of practices and representations, as well as of the notions of strategy, distinction and cultural capital of Bourdieu. For such, it was searched through the analysis of primary sources collected in the public files to verify if Campanha had been privileged by public politics of education in relation to the other cities of Minas that sustained the metaphor, which was not confirmed. The analysis of the cultural practices of the ¿campanhense¿ elite, already without the resources of the gold, revealed that in the genesis of the representation Athens of the South of Minas for Campanha were the strategies of maintenance of the status-quo of this social layer through the ¿nobilitization¿ search for the titles originating from the graduation in the universities of the country that made possible insert in the politics and in the bureaucratic pictures of the State, so much imperial as republican in the period of 1870/1930 / Mestrado / Historia, Filosofia e Educação / Mestre em Educação

This work intends to discuss the role of a specific group of elites in the Empire, a segment which belonged to the hegemonic group in the country, but it stood out for their education, cultural level, and especially for his frequent contact with the developed world after the industrial revolution. As part of the economic elite, acted pragmatically to create a State to become a privileged actor and would meet the interests of producers involved with model slave agrarian export, and, secondly, adopted a humanistic vision that was linked to transformations in societies that enjoyed gains from the industrial revolution, but they saw emerging new social relations. The segment of elite studied, regardless of the sphere of the State, sought to discuss issues relevant to their interests and made the approach to private institutions (non-confessional) through which could generalize their ideas, whether it were among their own members (as understood that they needed to be organized as collective actors) or among free men, that were not derived from the hegemonic group. One of the associations chosen by this segment was the Sociedade Amante da Instrução which is used to guide the work / Doutorado / Historia Economica / Doutor em Desenvolvimento Economico

Os senhores da terra e da guerra no Rio Grande do Sul : um estudo sobre as práticas de reprodução social do patronato rural estancieiro / The lords of the land and war in Rio Grande do Sul : a study of the practices of social reproduction by rural ranch employers

The present thesis analyzes the strategies of social reproduction of the large landowners breeders in Rio Grande do Sul from the establishment of the Republic, whose domain is conventionally called ranches and ranchers their masters. The strategies are meant the set of practices by which individuals or groups of individuals seek to maintain or improve their position in the social structure. It means to unveil the practices through which this social sector or expanding your search conserve power differentials in relation to other agents of social space, as well as the bundle of social conditions in which they occur. The contemporary history of occupation of the territory in this state is marked by great estates created in their areas of fields and installation of colonies of European immigrants in forest areas, especially Germans and Italians, established mutual influences on the dynamics of these powers exercised in social spaces. Within rancher's domain there was a double lock on the subordinate sectors as an impediment to migrate to areas of forests, due to the installation of the colonies, and the impossibility of collective labor migration due to the branch of the industrial immigrant preference, at least until mid-1950, and the dynamics of development of the regions that made colonial increase competition by offering labor in industrial areas. These effects, together with the Land Law of 1850, the enclosure of the fields, to force and violence in the private appropriation of land, determined the structure of power in which ranchers had asymmetrical customized relations of domination developed in relation to the workforce in their fields until the early 1990s. Externally the structure of domination of rancher's space, the complexity of the relationships between dominant groups within state and national organized a major transformation of rancher's elite from mid-1940: stop being subsidiary to export crops of sugar from Northeast and coffee from Southeast, to become producing a luxury, meat cold storage, from a network of refrigeration coordinated by them. The trajectory of collective rancher's elite rise, mainly due to the appreciation in the price of cattle, occurs until the late 1980s, when lower prices for cattle causes the breakdown of their refrigerators, with greater pressure for conversion of trajectories since then. This story objectified also determined a corporate history as habitus, in terms of principles of vision and division of the world, social behaviors and dispositions that are outsourced in their practices, in addition to investments and specific calculations not only for the specifically economic, but also in terms of accumulation of social and cultural capital. The relative decadence that begins from mid 1990, which is its capital, beyond the economic processes are a mismatch and ineptitude of their habitus forward to what is required in terms of social provisions for changes that occur in social space and roughly by society in general / Doutorado / Ciencias Sociais / Doutor em Ciências Sociais

Residential segregation of elite groups in Vancouver, British Columbia

Cooper, Marion Gibb Struthers January 1971 (has links)
The concern of this study is with residential location. It is contended that while consideration of economic and broad social variables will explain general patterns of segregation, finer differentiation exists which can only be revealed when detailed household characteristics are taken into account. The hypothesis under examination is that the social character of an individual or household has a significant effect on the choice of residential location, people with similar social characteristics grouping together in the same residential area. The hypothesis was tested in two upper income areas of Vancouver, British Columbia - Shaughnessy and British Properties - the expectation being that two distinct groups might emerge, representing an old elite group and a new upper class. Such a distinction was sought in terms of three main variables - mobility, family ties and social background. After interviewing thirty households in each area it was found that two distinct groups did emerge, the Shaughnessy group displaying characteristics attributable to the old upper class - stability, strong family ties and a prestige social background common to all the members - while the British Properties residents were highly mobile, had weak family ties and varied social backgrounds lacking the prestige elements present in the other group, such characteristics being typical of a new elite. These distinct social groups are shown to be spatially segregated with households of similar characteristics occupying the same residential area. / Arts, Faculty of / Geography, Department of / Graduate
