A Case Study in Southern Justice: The Emmett Till Case

Unknown Date (has links)
On August 28, 1955, Emmett Louis Till was abducted from the home of his uncle, Mose Wright, near Money, Mississippi. A body was recovered three days later in the nearby Tallahatchie River, which divides Tallahatchie and Leflore Counties, and the body was closer to the Tallahatchie bank of the river. A week later the Grand Jury of Tallahatchie County indicted J. W. Milan and Roy Bryant on separate counts of murder and kidnapping. On September 198, 1955, in Sumner, Mississippi, there began a trial destined to be the most publicized kidnap-murder trial since the Bruno Hauptman case, seventy reporters covered the trial, representing newspapers and magazines from all over the United States and from some foreign countries. Nearly every newspaper in the country gave the case and trial front-page play, as did many of those published in other countries. / Typescript. / A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate School of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. / Summer Semester, 1963. / "August, 1963" / Includes bibliographical references. / Marion D. Guidance-Related Services Performed by Selected Classroom Teachers in Jefferson County, Kentucky

Riley, Joseph 01 August 1977 (has links)
A selected sample of classroom teachers from the Jefferson County, Kentucky, school system, some of whom were also certified counselors, were surveyed to determine the extent to which they participated in certain teacher-pupil relationship activities. From the survey, it was determined (1) that of the teachers surveyed those with counselor certification participated in seventy-seven percent of these selected activities; (2) that those surveyed classroom teachers that do not have counselor certification also participated in these activities although generally to a lesser extent than those with certification; (3) that both teachers without and those with counselor certification felt that a master's degree program in guidance was to be preferred over others, and (4) that more members of both groups felt that too much of the school counselor's time was occupied with non-guidance activities, such as paperwork, scheduling, and disciplinary duties. Both groups also felt that too little time was spent by the school counselor in actual guidance activities. Additional studies were recommended.

Black Press Coverage of the Emmett Till Lynching as a Catalyst to the Civil Rights Movement

Oby, Michael Randolph 02 May 2007 (has links)
BLACK PRESS COVERAGE OF THE EMMETT TILL LYNCHING AS A CATALYST TO THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT by MICHAEL OBY Under the Direction of Leonard Teel ABSTRACT The movement for civil rights in America gathered momentum throughout the 1950s. In the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Brown vs. The Board of Education ruling, declaring unconstitutional permissive or mandatory school segregation, the white South responded with both passive and active resistance. In the midst of this ferment, an African-American boy from Chicago was lynched in Mississippi. Subsequent stories in the black press reported not only Emmett Till’s murder and the trial, but also a widening mobilization within the race, notably the creation of associations in defense of civil rights. The coverage of news and views in the black press provide substantial evidence that this mobilization ignited the civil rights movement of the mid-1950s, just months before the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott led by Martin Luther King Jr. This research supports the view that the black community’s mobilization during the months after Till’s murder served as a catalyst for the civil rights movement.

Negotiating the Delta: Dr. T.R.M. Howard in Mound Bayou, Mississippi

Southerland, William Jackson 27 October 2016 (has links)
This paper examines the racially segregationist practices and the integrationist, inclusionist formation of African American leader Dr. T.R.M. Howard during his tenure as a surgeon and entrepreneur in the all-black Mississippi Delta community of Mound Bayou, 1942-1956. The paper analytically investigates the careful racial negotiations that were required of Howard as he advanced a separatist but egalitarian economic and social plan for Delta blacks. This separatist plan, it is argued, is grounded in the racial pragmatism of the Seventh-day Adventist church which provided a bibliocentric, Tuskegee-inspired education to Howard from youth through medical school and beyond. Howard’s adherence to Adventist racial codes provided him with unique tools to establish financial strength and social cachet whereby he could in time shift to a more inclusionist, desegregationist focus. Howard’s separatist racial pragmatism is demonstrated in his creation of an economic power base in the 1940s. The 1950s shift to an inclusive position appears principally in three developments in Howard’s Mound Bayou career: the founding of the Regional Council for Negro Leadership, his activism after the Brown v. Board of Education decision, and his involvement in the trial of Emmett Till’s killers. Evidence is given from a number of primary sources, including both regional and national newspapers and the collected papers of Mississippi House Speaker Walter Sillers. The thesis argues that Howard’s pragmatism was both informed by Adventist racial pragmatism and provided the base whereby he could challenge Jim Crow directly; the pattern is accepting and enhancing racial segregation for the purpose of developing the means to work toward a racially inclusive, integrationist ideal. This pattern appears in Adventist evangelist practice, and it appears, with striking resemblance, in Howard’s work in Mound Bayou.

"Being" a Stickist: A Phenomenological Consideration of "Dwelling" in a Virtual Music Scene

Hodges, Jeff 05 1900 (has links)
Musical instruments are not static, unchanging objects. They are, instead, things that materially evolve in symmetry with human practices. Alterations to an instrument's design often attend to its ergonomic or expressive capacity, but sometimes an innovator causes an entirely new instrument to arise. One such instrument is the Chapman Stick. This instrument's history is closely intertwined with global currents that have evolved into virtual, online scenes. Virtuality obfuscates embodiment, but the Stick's world, like any instrument's, is optimally related in intercorporeal exchanges. Stickists circumvent real and virtual obstacles to engage the Stick world. Using an organology informed by the work of Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty, this study examines how the Chapman Stick, as a material "thing," speaks in and through a virtual, representational environment.

Parameter extraction in lithium ion batteries using optimal experiments / Parameterbestämning av litium-jonbatterier med hjälp av optimala experiment

Prathimala, Venu Gopal January 2021 (has links)
Lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries are widely used in various applications and are viable for automotive applications. The effective management of Li-Ion batteries in battery electric vehicles (BEV) plays a crucial role in performance and range. One can achieve good performance and range by using efficient battery models in battery management systems (BMS). Hence, these battery models play an essential part in the development process of battery electric vehicles. Physics-based battery models are used for design purposes, control, or to predict battery behaviour, and these require much information about materials and reaction and mass transport properties. Model parameterization, i.e., obtaining model parameters from different experimental sets (by fitting the model to experimental data sets), can be challenging depending on model complexity and the type and quality of experimental data. Based on the idea of parameter sensitivity, certain current/voltage data sets could be chosen that theoretically has a more considerable sensitivity for a given model parameter that is of interest to extract. In this thesis work, different methods for extracting model parameters for a Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) battery composite electrode are experimentally tested and compared. Specifically, model parameterization using \emph{optimal experiments} based on performed parameter sensitivity analysis has been benchmarked against a 1C discharge test and low rate pulse tests. The different parameter sets obtained have then been validated on a drive cycle and 2C pulse tests. Comparing the methods show some promising results for the optimal experiment design (OED) method, but consideration regarding the state of charge (SOC) dependencies, the number of parameters has to be further evaluated.

The deposition of silica on titanium dioxide surfaces

Furlong, Donald Neil January 1975 (has links)
The deposition of amorphous silica from aqueous solution on to rutile particles has been studied with the aim of elucidating the nature of the silica-titania interactions occurring and of following the progressive build up of the silica coating. The coating process, which involves the addition of an aqueous sodium silicate solution to an aqueous dispersion of titanium dioxide, has been investigated by performing a series of controlled preparations and using the technique of microelectrophoresis. Prepared silica-coated rutile samples ranging from partial to full silica coatings have been characterized using transmission electron microscopy, microelectrophoresis and nitrogen, argon and water sorption. Nitrogen and argon adsorption isotherms have been analysed using the equation of Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET). Differential energies of adsorption of nitrogen and argon have been determined calorimetrically. Water sorption isotherms have been analysed using the BET equation and the Frenkel - Halsey - Hill (FHH) equation. It has been shown that uniform silica coatings can be produced if adsorption of monomeric silica is followed by polymerization of silica at the solid/liquid interface. Surface cations on rutile may be hydroxylated or co-ordinately bound to water molecules and it appears that monomeric silica adsorbs preferentially by replacing ligand water molecules. Rutile particles with silica coatings thicker than approximately 2.5nm exhibit characteristics typical of silica and not of the base rutile. Silica coatings deposited at pH 10 contain narrow channels which are accessible to water molecules but not to nitrogen or argon. Neutralization to pH 7 reduces the volume in the coating accessible to water molecules.
