Learning orientations of FET students: the case of the Applied Learning Programme in a Western Cape FET college

Hamman, Liza January 2011 (has links)
Magister Educationis - MEd / This study investigated the reasons why FET part-time students enrolled at a FET college by examining their learning orientations. Guided by the literature, the focus was on the vocational orientation to learning and orientations to learning were further investigated within the vocational orientation based on orientations developed for part-time students found in the literature. In addition, it was investigated whether students' expectations have been met and if they were satisfied with the college experience. Lastly, the study examined the relevance of college learning to the world of work and the contribution it made to the career development of learners in a globalising world. The research shows that part-time students enrol at FET colleges predominantly for vocational reasons and the majority of the students were enrolled in order to advance their careers and associated with a vocational orientation to learning. However, it emerged that reasons for learning within the vocational orientation to learning are often multi-faceted and complex. The most important findings are 3 new learning orientations for part-time students that were identified: 'education for a qualification', 'education for adults who previously made the wrong choice' and 'education for adults as a model for their children'. Furthermore, the findings indicate that learners were satisfied with the programme they were enrolled in because they believed that the qualification would enable them to achieve their vocational aims which were primarily to find a new job, to be promoted and to increase their income. The findings suggest that the programme that was examined was relevant to the world of work, promoted employability and that it made a significant and important contribution to students' career development in a globalising world. / South Africa

Datorteket : Teknik, arbete och den anställningsbara människan

Cox, Miranda January 2017 (has links)
This thesis examines how employability and the employable as a discursive subject was constructed through a Swedish labor market policy measure called “datortek”. The datortek was a form of combined computer lab and activity center that was set up in collaboration between local governance and the National market labour board. People who were registered as unemployed could be sent to the local datortek to learn how to use a computer. In this way, they would be made employable in the new, knowledge based society and Sweden would be well on its way to become a leading nation in the field of IT-technology and expertise. At least, that was the idea. In the 1990’s there was a shift in Swedish, as well as european, labour policy discourse. The politically defined problem of “unemployment” changed towards being an issue of the individual’s ability to make oneself “employable”. On a large extent, employability depends on certain individual properties, such as “flexibility”, “entrepreneurship” and being “active”. Earlier research have mainly focused on employability as a policy concept. In this view, employability is seen as something that is enforced through public policy onto the workers. This study is taking a somewhat different approach. Here, employability will be seen as a concept that takes form in a process of negotiation and articulation. A process that takes place in the interpersonal meeting, in the intercept between man and machine, in formal documents as well as through the design of the datortek itself. Thus, the datortek can serve as a study object that allow us to investigate how employability was articulated. It is this articulation, the process of becoming-employable through the datortek, which is at the heart of this study. The thesis shows that the datortek functioned as a simulated work place where the participants were made to stage and perform “teamwork” and learn “social competence”. The computer was given the role of an instrument for bringing out certain feelings amongst the participants. This emotive discipline can be understood as a way to achieve “emotional competence”. The thesis also shows a different way on how a concept such as employability can be studied. By looking into the very practical aspects of the datortek, the abstract idea of employability is made comprehensible. This gives us, not only deepened knowledge of the notion of modern labor, but also a better understanding of how ideology is (re)produced.

Constructing a psychological career profile for staff retention

Ferreira, Nadia 06 1900 (has links)
The research focused on constructing a psychological career profile for staff retention practices by investigating the relationship between employees’ psychological career meta-competencies (psychological career resources, career adaptability and hardiness) and their retention-related dispositions (job embeddedness and organisational commitment). A quantitative survey was conducted on a convenience sample of employed adults (N = 355) at managerial and staff levels in the human resource management field. A canonical correlation analysis indicated a significant overall relationship between the psychological career meta-competencies and the retention-related dispositions. Multiple regression analyses indicated the psychological career meta-competencies as significant predictors of the retention-related dispositions variables. Structural equation modelling indicated a good fit of the data with the canonical correlation-derived measurement model. Moderated hierarchical regression analyses showed that gender and marital status significantly moderated the relationship between the participants’ psychological career meta-competencies and the retention-related disposition job-embedded fit. Tests for mean differences revealed that males and females differed significantly regarding their self/other skills and hardy-commitment while the marital status groups differed signifcantly regarding their behavioural adaptability and hardiness. On a theoretical level, the study deepened understanding of the cognitive, affective, conative and interpersonal behavioural dimensions of the hypothesized psychological career profile. On an empirical level, the study produced an empirically tested psychological career profile in terms of the various behavioural dimensions. On a practical level, organisational staff retention practices in terms of the behavioural dimensions of the psychological career profile were recommended. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / D.Com.(Industrial and Organisational Psychology)

Differentiating factors in ARA Groups(groups of high academic achievement) and its effects on the definition of university strategies

Sanahuja Velez, Gisela 01 September 2017 (has links)
This PhD thesis, which is presented in the mode of published articles, explores the differentiating factors of a High Academic Achievement Program at a public technological university in Spain and how they can affect the definition of the university strategies. The Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), launched in the 2010-11 academic year the High Academic Achievement Groups ("Grupos de Alto Rendimiento Académico", from now on ARA Groups), characterized by a good number of courses taught using English as a medium of instruction, a small number of students in the class, and highly qualified teachers. English taught courses are a global phenomenon, associated to improved English language and internationalization skills, but it raises concerns about learning outcomes and equity (Dearden, 2014). The purpose of this study was to assess the first promotion (2010-2014) of this program at the five university bachelor degrees of the UPV that offered it. We wanted to analyze if this action has had any impact on a set of variables related to academic outcomes, international exchange programs, and business internships of the participating students in comparison with the rest of students of these degrees and hence, on their employability upon graduation. The sample consisted in the total of 3,543 students of the five degrees offering this innovation, of which 560 belonged to the ARA Groups. The first article "Effects of business internships on students, employers, and higher education institutions: a systematic review" (Sanahuja Vélez, G., and Ribes Giner, G., 2015) was published by the Journal of Employment Counselling on September 2015. The second publication consists of a Book Chapter published by Springer International Publishing on January 2017: "Intrapreneuring within a higher education institution: Introducing virtual business internships" (Sanahuja Vélez, G., Ribes Giner, G., Moya Clemente, I., 2017) in Entrepreneurial Universities (Peris-Ortiz, M., Alonso Gómez, J., Merigó Lindahl, J. M., and Rueda-Armengot, C., Eds.). The third publication is a "Systematic review of English Medium of Instruction (EMI) in higher education institutions. The case of a Business School", presented as a conference at the 2nd Seminar on Learning Internationalization: English Medium of Instruction (EMI) of the Centro de Lenguas of the Universitat Politècnica de València (March 30 and 31st, 2017) and which is currently being reviewed for its publication in its international journal. The fourth research work is the article "Enhancing student internationalization and employability in a Business School", which is presently been given full consideration for publication at the Journal of Business Management and Business Economics. The fifth article presents the core results of the empirical part of this research work and it is entitled: "Introducing a High Academic Achievement Program in a Technological University as a Social Innovation Mechanism to Enhance Graduates' Employability". This paper is currently given full consideration for publication at the journal Technovation. The overall conclusions of our research allow us to conclude that, from the academic point of view, the objectives of the High Academic Achievement Groups of the UPV were met, as results show that academic performance was enhanced. Our results also show that participation into exchange programs, at the School of Business Administration and Management and in the UPV as a whole, was almost four times higher in the ARA groups. Having in mind that better grades and international experience are directly linked to future employability and mobility of graduates, it is expected that these graduates will have a superior reception in the labor market. A New Perspective into Languages for Specific Purposes (LSP) Syllabus Design : Target language learningpromoting thedevelopment of refugee employability competencies

Capocchi Ribeiro, Maria Alice de Fatima January 2021 (has links)
This thesis reports on a meta-analysis of the most relevant employabilitycompetencies to foster refugees’ labour integration which may be potentiallyleveraged through a target language for specific purposes (LSP)MOOCsyllabus. Italso suggests to group the thus identified employability competencies into threecategories tofurther supportLSPMOOC syllabus design and implementation.Themethodology of meta-analysis was based on Cooper’s (2017) five-stage model andguided by exploratory data analysis (EDA) of a dedicated research corpus that wasspecifically tailored for this study. Three data mining tools were used to performnatural language pre-processing and pattern extraction, directed by key terms(employability, competency, competencies, skill, ability, abilities, vocational, refugee, andlabour) used in various query combinations and limiters. IterativeEDApost-processing of metadata generated by these tools, based ontheoretical andsemantic sorting and integration, led to 21 re-aggregated clusters of employabilitycompetencies and the suggested categories for grouping them. The present studyshows that the broader capillarity of data and text mining tools, as well as ofEDA,can contribute toa more encompassing view of employability competencies and oftheLSP as a tool-competency, hence to a greater capillarity ofcompetency-basedVET(Vocational Education and Training) syllabus design, particularly the proposedinnovative type ofLSPMOOC syllabus. /
Examination Seminar held by Zoom given that it was a Distance Programme

León Chacaliaza, Alexandra Astrid 15 December 2020 (has links)
The objective of the study was to carry out a bibliometric analysis of the scientific publications of the Alicia Concytec database, to establish current information on the scientific articles on employability in young graduates. First, a search for variable employability was carried out in the Alicia Concytec database, in which a total of 5 articles were found, of which 3 articles make up the study sample because they are related to employability in young graduates. Likewise, data and utilization analyzes were carried out, and an analysis of the information obtained was developed. The results highlight the small number of quantitative studies in relation to variable employability and that one hundred percent of the works contain a summary, summary, keywords, introduction, objectives and hypotheses. However, only 50% of the studies have recommendations. In conclusion, bibliometrics is considered as a research method that allows measuring the progress of science and its contribution. In this way, important social phenomena are explained with real information. / Trabajo de investigación

Náhrada škody a nemajetkové újmy vzniklé pracovním úrazem / Compensation for damage and non-material damage caused by a work accident

Fojtíková, Monika January 2019 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the issue of damage and non-material damage caused by work accidents. The first chapter describes the basic concept of legal liability and main functions of the employer's liability for damage caused to employees. The second chapter focuses on the basic assumptions, fulfilment of which creates an obligation for the employer to compensate employees for damage and non-material damage. It also describes the work accident as a legal term and discusses specific situations such as a heart-attack, a work injury during team-building or a work injury during a business trip using interpretation based, in particular, on a review of Czech case law. The employer is not always obliged to compensate employees for damage and non-material damage. Situations in which the employer is released from the obligation to pay damages and non-material damage are described at the end of the second chapter. These situations include violation of legal regulations or instructions, drunkenness or misuse of addictive substances and, last but not least, reckless behaviour of an employee. The third part which is the core of the thesis, deals with individual types and scopes of compensations, namely compensation for loss of earnings, material damage and purposefully spent treatment costs. Yrkesväxling : En beskrivning av drivkrafterna bakom vändpunktsprocessen hos individer i medelåldern. / Job Change : A description of the motivating behind the turning point process of middle-aged individuals.

Larsen, Anne-Marie, Dahlberg, Caroline January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to clarify the underlying human motives, both external and internal, in career choices of professional change, of which contributes to career changes. This thesis enlightens some of the societal conditions or obstacles that exist to a future study start, as part of the participants personal development, and clarify what led them to take the decisive step towards a new career path. Theoretical framework used is Abraham Maslow's (1989/1943) needs pyramid, George Herbert Meads (2001/1934) concept of significant others, Fuchs Ebaugh's (1988) theory of turning point processes and the theory of planned Happenstance which Kathleen Mitchell, Al Levin and John Krumboltz (1999) are the founders of. Method used is focus group interviews. Results show that the underlying human motivation processes in participants' professional exchange can be linked to the needs of Maslow's (1989/1943) needs pyramid. The most basic needs must be met in order for the individual to feel motivated to begin self-development. One obstacle whether to decide to invest in education or not, is failing self-confidence. To overcome this, the attitude of the significant other (Mead 2001/1934) takes on a decisive importance. A turning point process involves an identity crisis in which a new professional role is to take place, a strain for both the participant and the whole family (Fuchs Ebaugh 1988). Other human motivation processes, besides self-realization, are a long-awaited change in their working life situation and the participants' desire to enter the community in a working group they look forward to. To get there, participants see education as a fulfilling way and a way to increase their employability. The participants in this study believe that it was random that decided which education they ended up with in many cases, but with Planned Happenstance as an explanatory model it appears that the choice were really based on conscious attitudes (Mitchell, Levin and Krumboltz 1999). This thesis can increase the knowledge for study and career counselors, about how individuals should be approached and what areas the profession should focus on to help individuals reach future career aspirations through an informed choice.
